4-PEAT! SINCLAIR WINS 4TH STRAIGHT OCCAC TITLE!

Heading into the weekend, the Pride knew that all they needed was one win over Lakeland, to claim their 4th straight conference championship.  With four games to play at home, nobody wanted to wait for game two.  Sinclair got on the board first with a two out, three run homerun off the bat of Drew Williams. The Lakers battled back and put up four runs of their own in the 3rd inning off starter Jon Thacker.  Trailing by one run in the 4th, Matt Sullivan lead things off with a single to left.  After a Paul Wilson sacrifice bunt, Jon Lowe walked to move the tying run to second.  Blake Hall laced a hit and run to left center tying the game at four.  Joe Ford walked and Austin Downing singled up the middle scoring two runs.  Those runs would be enough for Jon Thacker who battled through five plus innings of work.  Matt Kruzel entered the game in the 6th with two out and ended a Laker threat.  In the 7th, and trailing by four runs, the Lakers led the inning off with a single off Kruzel.  A flyball out to right set up the next play, a 4-6-3 double to end the game.  The celebration was on as the Sinclair players dogpiled near the mound.

Final Score: #11 Sinclair 8 Lakeland 4

WP: Jon Thacker (6-0) 5.2IP 9H 4ER 4K’s

SV: Matt Kruzel (3) 1.1IP H

Offensive Leaders: Joe Ford 2-3 RS 2B, Austin Downing 1-2 SAC 3 RBI’s, Drew Williams 1-3 RS HR 3RBI’s, Matt Sullivan 2-3 RS, Jon Lowe 1-2 2RS BB, Blake Hall 1-2 SAC RBI.

After the dogpile, Sinclair didn’t have much to celebrate in game two.  Laker starter John Gora held the Tartan batters down and only allowed two hits in a complete game shutout performance.  Lakeland put up a run in the 2nd and four in the 3rd and that was all the scoring needed.

Final Score: Lakeland 5 #11 Sinclair 0

LP: Ian Creager (5-2) 4IP 9H 5ER

Offensive Leaders: Dan Lawrence 1-3, Darwin Argumedo 1-3 2B.

First game today has been pushed back to 1pm due to rain in the morning forecast.  Corey Johnson will be starting game one and Brock Trimbur will be starting game two.

SINCLAIR SWEEPS WEEK 1 OCCAC POW HONORS!

The OCCAC Baseball Committee has selected Sinclair's Austin Downing as the "OCCAC Baseball Player of the Week" for Week 1 of league play.  The committee has also tagged Sinclair pitcher Corey Johnson as Week 1 "OCCAC Pitcher of the Week".

The Pride took on Owens in the first league series during the week and second baseman Austin Downing (Middletown, Ohio) lit up the hitting category by going .500 for the first four games.  He also had a home run, 4 RBI's and two stolen bases.  Coach Stephen Dintaman is quoted as saying "Austin had a great weekend for us. He came through with a walk-off single in game one and hit a big homerun for us in game two. He was on base all weekend and played good defensively.

Corey Johnson of Sinclair was also named as Week 1 "OCCAC Pitcher of the Week".  Corey is a right handed pitcher out of Tippecanoe High School. During his outing against Owens, Sinclair won 3-1 while he pitched 6 innings.  Corey allowed only 3 hits and one run and struck out 7 batters.Coach Dintaman states "Corey took advantage of his first conference start and gave us six strong innings. He’s shown great composure on the mound this year and really competes every time out."

Congratulations to both Austin and Corey for their outstanding play during week 1 of league play and continued success throughout the remainder of the season!

BASEBALL STUDENT-ATHLETES SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST WITH 3.12 WINTER QUARTER GPA!

As Sinclair says goodbye to quarters this year, Coach Dintaman made his message clear.  "With this being the last winter quarter ever, I told my guys that they have to own it," said Dintaman.  "I think it's always been tougher on our players with quarters and the fact that most teams don't have classes during their postseason runs and we always have.  We've also lost players after the winter quarter and now we'll never have to worry about that again."  Unofficially, the Pride finished the quarter with a 3.12 GPA (Still awaiting a few changes before it's official, but it's very close.)  Fifteen players finished with over a 3.0, seven players made the dean's list, and two finished with a perfect 4.0.  Congratulations to the players on their academic achievements.  ROLL PRIDE!

USA Stadium
PRIDE RETURN FROM TENNESSEE WITH THREE WINS!

This past weekend, Sinclair traveled to Millington, Tennessee to compete in the USA Stadium Kickoff Classic.  Playing against some of the premier programs in the country, the Pride won three out of their five games.  Here are the recaps:

Day 1

Ian Creager took the mound in Game 1 for the Pride looking to pick up his second win of the season against Carl Sandburg (IL).  After recording two outs in the second, Creager allowed three straight hits that plated the game’s first run.  That was all the Chargers would get off Creager though, as he tossed a total of six innings while striking out twelve.  The Sinclair bats came to life in the 3rd scoring five, highlighted by a two out double off the bat of Drew Williams that drove in two.  The offense would add on later in the game with two big innings but the Chargers made an effort to comeback off the Tartans bullpen by scoring five in the 7th and four in the 8th.  Ryan Carter came into the 8th with bases loaded to stop the bleeding and then he tossed a scoreless 9th to secure the win.

Final Score: Sinclair 15 Carl Sandburg 10

WP: Ian Creager (2-0) 6 IP 4 H 1 ER 12 K’s

SV: Ryan Carter (1)

Offensive Leaders: Joe Ford 3-6 2B 3 RBI’s, Nick McGill 2-6 3RS 2B HR 2 RBI’s, Drew Williams 3-5 BB 3RS 2B HR 2 RBI’s, Austin Downing 2-5 2B RBI, Matt Sullivan 2-4 BB RBI.

In the second game of the day, the Pride turned to Jon Thacker to take on #20 Iowa Central.  Thacker did not disappoint as he pitched a gem against the Tritons.  The game remained scoreless until the top of the 4th when Nick McGill led off with a double.  Austin Downing’s bunt attempt was a success as he moved McGill to 3rd and reached on an error himself.   Matt Sullivan then struck out swinging on a ball in the dirt that got past the catcher and McGill came home for the first run.  Sinclair added on in the 5th with another big hit from McGill.  Kyle Vander Ark led off with a walk but the next two hitters failed to move him.  McGill delivered a two out triple to right that scored Vander Ark giving the Tartans a 2-0 lead.  Central responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning.  An error allowed their leadoff hitter to get on base and then a single to right would set up Nick McGill for his first put out of many on the weekend.  McGill fired a strike to 3rd that nailed the lead runner for the first out of the inning.  The next batter doubled in a run but Thacker retired the next two.  The game would get interesting in the 6th as both teams were competing against the sun going down since the field had no lights.  Prior to the start of the game, it was determined that if seven innings were not complete, the game would be finished the following night under the lights on the main field.  The Sinclair bats went scoreless in the top half and it was apparent that this would be the last half inning of the day.  Thacker retired the first batter he faced and then the next batter reached on a crazy hop at 3rd.  After a lineout, Central’s next two batters singled scoring the tying run.  The Pride defense had an opportunity to throw out the runner at home but a low throw allowed the runner to be safe.  The next batter was retired ending the night at 2-2.

After playing two games in the morning of the Day 2, Carlos Merlano entered the suspended game against Iowa Central.  Merlano just didn’t have it and he allowed six runs in his inning of work.  The offense put up a fight and had some chances but the five run 7th from Central was too much to overcome.

Final Score: #20 Iowa Central 8 Sinclair 4

LP: Carlos Merlano (0-1)

Offensive Leaders: Nick McGill 2-5 RS 2B 3B RBI, Blake Hall 1-2 BB.

Day 2

Freshmen Stephen Holland made his first career start for the Pride against Muscatine (IA) and was nearly perfect.  Holland left the game in the 6th without allowing a single run and only allowing one hit.  Matt Kruzel finished off the shutout recording the final five outs of the ball game.  The Pride offense scored two in the first on a two out single from Drew Williams and the team collected eleven hits on route to the victory.

Final Score: Sinclair 6 Muscatine 0

WP: Stephen Holland (2-0) 5.1 IP 1 H 9 K’s

Offensive Leaders: Jon Lowe 2-4 RS 3B, Joe Ford 1-2 2RS BB, Drew Williams 2-4 3 RBI’s, Nick McGill 1-1 2BB’s 2B RBI.

Physical and mental mistakes doomed the Pride in game two and Southeastern (IA) took advantage of every one of them.  The Blackhawks scored three runs in each of the first two innings and took control.  Sinclair was never really in the game as the Pride hitter only managed four hits.

Final Score: Southeastern 12 Sinclair 1

LP: Corey Johnson 0-1

Offensive Leaders: Joe Ford 2-3, Darwin Argumedo 1-2 RBI.

Day 3

The final game in Millington matched up Sinclair with another ranked team in #13 Lackawanna College (PA.)  Sophomore transfer Brock Trimbur made his first start and did a great job keeping LC hitters off balance.  The lead would change seven times during the game and Lackawanna struck first in the 3rd.  The Pride answered in the fourth when Dan Lawrence hit a two out double and was knocked home by a triple off the bat of Mike Maddle.   Both teams traded runs in the 5th and TJ Teets entered the game in the 6th relieving Trimbur.  Teets retired six straight batters until the 8th when he walked the leadoff hitter.  That runner would score and the Pride trailed again heading into the bottom of the inning.  Kyle Vander Ark started things off with a single to center but a failed sacrifice attempt from Lawrence got him thrown out at second.  With Lawrence banged up, Corey Johnson made his running debut for Sinclair.  Even though he was almost picked off on the second throw over, a wise man once said, “Good base runners are almost always out- Joe Ford.”  Maddle drew a walk and an Austin Downing single loaded the bases.  Matt Sullivan clutched up and delivered a single to center that tied the game and the bases remained loaded for Jon Lowe.  Lowe hit a chopper to 3rd and with no play at the plate, the third basemen was forced to throw him out at 1st, allowing the Pride to take the lead.  Teets threw two straight groundball outs to Downing at 3rd and after allowing a two out single, struck out the final batter of the game on a breaking ball.

Final Score: Sinclair 4 #13 Lackawanna College 3

WP: TJ Teets 1-0

Offensive Leaders: Dan Lawrence 2-4 RS 2B, Michael Maddle 1-3 RS 3B RBI, Austin Downing 2-4 2B, Matt Sullivan 1-3 BB RS RBI, Jon Lowe 1-3 Sac Bunt RBI.

Sinclair is now 6-2 on the season and will take on Tiffin JV in a midweek contest at home today at 4pm.

8TH INNING COMEBACK LIFTS PRIDE OVER BLUE KNIGHTS

Sinclair and Urbana traded the lead five times on Tuesday night, but the Pride found a way to win 5-4.

The Pride offense got on the board first, with a two out double off the bat of Danny Lawrence that scored Kyle Vander Ark.  Another two out double in the following inning from Paul Wilson extended the lead to 2-0.  On the other side, Corey Johnson was in total control over the Blue Knights hitters in his four innings of work.  Johnson did not allow a hit and only had one base runner while striking out seven.

Brock Trimbur relieved Johnson in the 5th and threw well, but ran into major problems in the 8th.  Down 3-1,  Urbana connected for four straight hits and took the lead 4-3.

In the bottom half, Mike Maddle reached base on an infield error and Darwin Argumedo came off the bench to lay down a successful sacrifice bunt.  With the tying run at second, Nick McGill drew a walk and that brought Austin Downing to the dish.  On a 1-2 count, the double steal was on and the Blue Knight catcher threw the ball into the outfield allowing the tying run to score.  Downing would strikeout but Drew Williams picked him up with a double to left field.  Williams hit proved to be the game winner as Freshmen TJ Teets shut down the Knights in the 9th for the save.

Final Score: Sinclair 5 Urbana JV 4

Offensive Leaders: Danny Lawrence 3-3 2B RBI, Drew Williams 1-2 RS 2B 2 RBI's.

SINCLAIR TAKES TWO AGAINST GLEN OAKS ON OPENING DAY!

image_name2
Kyle Vander Ark's first homerun of the season tied the game at 3 in Game 1.

Game 1

In a matchup between the 2011 OCCAC & MCCAA Champions, Sinclair struck first blood in the first inning on an RBI groundout from Kyle Vander Ark that plated Joe Ford.  Starter Jon Thacker did a great job tossing up zeros and took a 1-0 lead into the 4th.  Glen Oaks starter Curtis Wise matched Thacker and cruised through Pride hitters after the first inning.  After giving up a run in the 4th and the 5th, Thacker got into trouble in the 6th and left with the bases loaded and one out.  Freshmen Stephen Holland struck out the first batter he faced but a passed ball allowed the third run of the game to score.  Holland got out of the jam though and the Pride went into the bottom of the 6th trailing 3-1.  With one out, Ford got things started with his third hit of the game and took second on the misplayed ball in the outfield.  Kyle Vander Ark then delivered the big blast to right, into the wind, tying the game at 3-3.  Back-to-back hits from Dan Lawrence and Austin Downing chased starter Curtis Wise from the game and made Glen Oaks make the call to the bullpen.  Paul Wilson didn't wait long to break the tie and hit a laser into leftfield for a ground rule double that scored two.  Holland would allow a run in the top of the 7th but finished the game on a strikeout earning the victory.

Final Score: Sinclair 5 Glen Oaks 4

WP: Stephen Holland 1-0

Offensive Leaders: Joe Ford 3-3 2 RS 3B, Kyle Vander Ark 1-3 HR 3 RBI's, Paul Wilson 1-3 2B 2 RBI's.

Game 2

The bats exploded in the second game and the Pride hitters took advantage of Viking's defensive miscues.  Sinclair scored 19 runs on 15 hits to complete the sweep and improve to 2-0.

Final Score: Sinclair 19 Glen Oaks 7

WP: Ian Creager 1-0

Offensive Leaders: Paul Wilson 3-4 4 RS 2B RBI, Kyle Vander Ark 2-4 3RS 3 RBI's, Dan Lawrence 2-4 2RS 2 RBI's, Jon Lowe 2-3 2RS 2B 2 RBI's 2 BB's, Darwin Argumedo 3-5 2RS RBI.
