HISTORY OF SYHA
The Scarsdale Youth Hockey Association (SYHA) was started in 1996. With the help of our high school coach, Jim Mancuso and volunteer Scarsdale parents, we built a program that would allow boys and girls from Scarsdale to continue their hockey experience once the Recreation Department clinics ended. A Board of Directors was formed in 1997 consisting of 9 volunteer Board members and 4 Officers. The goal of SYHA is to provide a hockey program for children, ages 6-14, so that our children will not have to leave the area to play for other teams. Along with the Scarsdale High School coaches, we help children build the skills and confidence necessary to compete at a varsity level. SYHA is registered with USA Hockey (the coordinating body for amateur hockey in the country). All children playing for our organization are registered and insured by USA Hockey. SYHA is registered with the Government as a non-profit organization with a tax exempt I.D. number. Our Fall hockey season runs from October through March, and our children are on the ice approximately 50 - 60 times for practices and games. We also have a Spring season that runs from April through June. In the 1997/1998 season, SYHA had 34 children in 2 house or developmental teams, a Mite team (ages 6-9) and a Squirt team (ages (10-11). The 1998/1999 season consisted of 1 travel team and 2 house teams, totaling 54 children. We had a Mite, Squirt and PeeWee team (ages 12-13). The 1999/2000 season consisted of 2 Mite, 2 Squirt and 1 PeeWee team, totaling 84 children. SYHA also had Scarsdale children playing with Bronxville this past season at the Bantam level (ages 13-14). The 2000/2001 season consisted of 2 Mite, 2 Squirt and 1 PeeWee team, totaling 80 children. All of our travel teams are members of the Hudson Valley Hockey Association. |
