Gladiator Games
The Sawyers attended the 7th Annual Gladiator Games at RPI this past Sunday. The format was changed this year to 10 v. 10 - full field - matching what most fall tournaments are doing. As some may know RPI has made some major renovations to their athletic fields - including the addition of another field turf playing surface and a new stadium and sports arena/administration building is under construction.
The fall stickman defeated South Glens Falls 4-2 in their first game, then they outscored a free agent team of players from Bethlehem, Glens Falls and Saratoga 6-2 and dropped their final game to a strong Queensbury team 10-7. In addition the boys got a bonus for arriving early and scrimmaged the Niskayuna Silver team for a half hour.
Next up - The Winter Indoor League at the Hudson Valley Sportsdome.

A beautiful, sunny Father's Day was the backdrop for the 5th annual Laxtravaganza Alumni Game. The alums were short a couple of their big guns, but still managed to pull out the victory 11-7 over the "Sawyer Lax '08" squad. Two new twists were added this year that made things interesting an more entertaining: the 3 Point Spot and the Fans as Refs feature - which was used often. Pics to follow.

John Jay ends Sawyers season again!
The oppressive heat and the competition was brutal on Saturday at Dietz Stadium as the John Jay-Cross River Indians defeated the Sawyers in the NYSPHSAA Regional game. Early on the Sawyer stickmen were keeping the pace 2-1. But the outstanding talent of the Indians eventually proved to much with the final score being a lopsided 21-3. The final score is not truly indicative of the overall better performance than last year at Cross River - especially in the first half. Matt Swart, Phil Missasi and Tony Spada scored the goals with Swart, Mike Sheehan and Nick Debonis the assists. EJ Duffy made 17 saves - a few of them spectacular one-on-one stuffs of JJ All-American attackman Chris Bocklet! Dan Villa put up 5 saves.

Sawyers shock Warwick!
The Wildcats from Warwick came into the game averaging 17 goals in their first two wins. The game started out close 1-1 at the end of the first quarter. Warwick opened up a two goal lead at halftime 6-4 and extended that lead to 7-4 after three periods. Halfway through the final quarter the Sawyers began chipping away at the lead. With 1:40 remaining the lead was down to two goals as what appeared to be a goal for Warwick was wiped out by an offsides - but the Sawyers were penalized for another infraction on the play. The Sawyers got possession of the ball and worked it upfield and after a timeout Spada fed the ball to Froude for the game tying goal. After winning the ensuing face-off Spada to the ball to cage and fired in the game winner with just over a minute remaining. Warwick got the ball and one more chance- but the Sawyer defense was having none of it and forced a turnover - got the ball upfield and killed the clock to win the opener at home 8-7.
