In just six seasons at San Jacinto College North, Tom Arrington has earned the reputation as one of the nation’s top junior college baseball coaches.
Arrington led the Gators to back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association World Series title games. The 2004 team went 41-22 overall, including a championship loss to Dixie College. Three seasons ago, Arrington’s unit produced 52 victories before finishing as the nation’s second best team.
One thing is for sure: The head coach has shown that come time for the World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado, the Gators will be there. “I think our formula encompasses many things,” Arrington said.
“Certainly our job as coaches is to identify and get players that are talented. It’s also about developing that talent once we get it. We want to develop these young men athletically, but we are also focused on helping them receive a quality education. Those are two things we can definitely offer.”
San Jacinto College North possessed the most storied and successful JUCO baseball program in the nation before Arrington’s arrival in 2000 as an assistant for one season. The former Montreal Expos draftee quickly added three NJCAA World Series appearances and has kept the book open for more chapters to be added.
“The absolute number one priority here is winning,” Arrington said. “And we want to promote these young men in a number of areas.”
That includes promoting each player toward a higher education at a four-year college or helping them achieve a professional baseball contract.
Arrington and his staff are driven to do their part and he admits the coaches are fortunate to have the support of the administration, faculty and the students.
“I believe one of the incentive factors that we have here is our tradition,” he says. “That tradition tends to push you as players and coaches. That’s a factor you cannot rank or identify in numbers, but those in this program understand the importance of winning.”
