Friday, February 29 Spartan season opener ends in walk off home run Feb 28th After having their only two preseason scrimmage games rained out last week, Sanderson took the field as the visitors on 2/28/08 to face the Jaquars of Athens Drive. It did not take the Spartans long to score their first run of the 2008 season by scoring in their top of the first inning. With two outs and nobody on base, Charles Wolfe, last year’s CAP 7 Rookie of the Year, hit a single to reach base. He was then moved over to third base when Mark Peterson hit a single to right field. Max Gagnon plated Wolfe for the Spartans first run of 2008 with his single to right field. Senior Mark Peterson stated on the mound in our season opener. The Jaquars first two batters reached on singles and would score a run to tie the score 1-1. In the second inning Brody Elliott hit a single and later stole second base but Brody was stranded on second base. In the Athens bottom of the second, Peterson struck out all three batters and we remain tied 1-1. In our top of the third Kyle Wigmore gets his first hit of the 2008 season as he led off the fourth inning with a single. That was all for that inning. In Athens bottom half, their top two batters in the order, Matt Paske and Wyatt Medlin, get their second hit each but are also stranded so we stay at 1-1 after three innings. With runners on first and third, the first base runner tried to steal second base, when catcher Gagnon threw to Wigmore at shortstop, who then threw to second baseman Robert Brunson who chased the runner back to first base while keeping the runner on third base from scoring. Brunson then threw to first baseman Wolfe who tagged out the first base runner. In the fourth inning, with one out Gagnon reaches base on a walk. Pinch runner Seth Elderkin came on for Gagnon and he was moved to third base when Brody got his second hit of the afternoon, a single to right field. When Brody got involved in a pickle between first and second Elderkin stole home to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead. In Athens half of the inning, Spartan pitcher Peterson gets his fourth and fifth strikeouts and Sanderson heads to the fifth inning still up, 2-1. Kyle Loose leads off the fifth inning with his first hit of the game followed by Wigmore getting on his base with his first walk. We have two runners on base with no outs but we can not push any runs across and maintain our 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the fifth inning the Jaquars lead off batter gets on base after being hit by a pitch. Paske got his third straight hit to score a run and he would later score on an error on a fly ball hit to right field. The Jaquars take the lead 3-2 headed to the top of the sixth inning. Sanderson sends seven batters to the plate in their top of the sixth inning, collecting two hits and scoring a run. Max Gagnon was our first base runner when he got his second hit of the game, a single. Elderkin again came on as Gagnon’s pinch runner and moved to second base when Travis Trumps got on base with a walk and no outs. Elderkin was moved to third on Brody’s fielder choice. Robert Brunson collected his first hit of the season and drove in Elderkin with his single. We are now tied up 3-3 headed to the bottom of the sixth inning. Sanderson brought on a new pitcher, Bryan Burke, to start Athens bottom of the sixth inning. Bryan only faced three batters and did not allow any hits. In Sanderson’s top of the seventh, Eric Brommer got his first hit of the game as a single. Wolfe also gets on base but we are unable to push across any runs. Athens Drive comes to the plate and gets their second batter on base with a hit in the infield gap. Next up is red hot Matt Paske who hits a pitch over the center field fence for a two run homer as Athens Drive wins 5-3. For the Jaquars, who were out hit 10-7, Matt Paske led the way with a 4-4 night, including his walk off home run. The other multi-hit player was Wyatt Medlin who collected 2 hits. Starting pitcher Kyle Hathcock pitched four innings, allowed six hits, struck out 5 batters, walked one, and allowed 2 runs. Winning pitcher Travis Lush pitched the final three innings, allowed three hits, struck out one, walked two and allowed one run. Sanderson was led by Max Gagnon with two hits, two runs scored, an RBI and a walk. Elliott Brody also got two hits. Charles Wolfe added a single and walk, as well as scoring a run. Kyle Wigmore chipped in with a single and a walk. Robert Brunson had a RBI to go along with his single. Eric Brommer, Kyle Loose and Mark Peterson each collected a single. Starting pitcher Mark Peterson pitched five strong innings, allowing five hits, struck out five and walked two, while only allowing three runs. Bryan Burke pitched the last two innings, allowed two hits, struck out one batter and allowed two runs in taking the loss. Sunday, March 2 Spartans win season home opener vs Middle Creek Sanderson was at home for the first time this season and delighted a surprising large student turn out on 2/29/08. Sanderson faced the Tri-Eight Middle Creek Mustangs and came away with a solid 3-0 win. In Middle Creek’s first at bat, Spartans starting pitcher Charles Wolfe struck out the first two batters while the third batter hit a fly ball to centerfielder Elliott Brody. Sanderson’s Eric Brommer was our first base runner with a single, followed by Charles Wolfe’s single. That was all for the first. Starting the second inning, Middle Creek’s lead off batter hit a ground ball to Spartan shortstop Kyle Wigmore who throws out the runner at first base with Mark Peterson covering the bag. The Mustangs get their first hit of the game when Robert Speight hits a single, which was followed by Jason Turpin’s slow roller down the third base line. Middle Creek has runners on first and second when Sanderson turns their first double play of the year. The Mustangs batter struck out looking and Spartans catcher Max Gagnon threw down to first baseman Mark Peterson who placed the tag on the runner. Threat and inning over. Sanderson’s batters go down 1-2-3 so after two innings so it remains 0-0. In their top of the third, lead off batter Josh Powell reached base on a single but is later thrown out when Spartans catcher Gagnon throws down to second basemen Robert Brunson, who places the tag on the base stealing Powell. Two singles by Johnny Crouse and Landon Adams places runners on 1st and 2nd and one out. The next batter pops up to catcher Gagnon and then pitcher Wolfe strikes out the last batter for his fourth strikeout of the game. In the bottom of the fourth Sanderson has their best scoring chance of the game. A single by Brommer, a walk to Wolfe and a single by Peterson loads the bases with no outs. Our bats then go quite as the next three batters are unable advance the runners. After four innings we remain in a 0-0 tie. Middle Creek batters are put down once again 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth inning. First baseman Peterson handles a ground ball for out #1. Wolfe strikes out his fifth batter and second basemen Brunson handles a grounder with his throw to first base for the final out. The Spartans bats come alive against Mustang starter Kevin Jones in the bottom of the fifth. Brunson gets us going with his single to left field, followed by Wigmore’s single to left field as well. The Mustangs now bring on pitcher Johnny Crouse. Brommer reaches first on a fielder’s choice, then Wolfe gets his second hit of the game to plate our first run when Wigmore scores. With runners on 1st and 2nd base, clean up batter Peterson hit to the opposite field for a triple to bring in Brommer and pinch runner Alex Baldy and clears the bases. Gagnon gets our fifth hit of the inning with a single. After five innings Sanderson takes a 3-0 lead into the sixth inning. The Mustangs put some pressure on Sanderson’s defense when lead off batter Landon Adams hits a triple to left field. Then our defense responded. Wolfe got his sixth strikeout for out #1, catcher Gagnon catches his second pop up of the evening for out #2, and first basemen Peterson gets involved with the third out when he handles a hit ball and tags the bag himself. In Sanderson bottom of the sixth we go down 1-2-3 and head to the top of the seventh leading 3-0. Wolfe returns to the mound and he is still throwing the heat in getting his seventh and eighth strikeouts of the game in the seventh inning. The other out of the inning was when center fielder Kyle Wood makes a throw to second baseman Brunson who tags out the Mustang batter trying to stretch a single to double. Final score, Sanderson 3, Middle Creek 0. Middle Creek was led by Landon Adams would got a double and triple. Starting pitcher Kevin Jones pitched 4 1/3 innings and reliever Johnny Crouse came on in the fifth inning and took the loss. Charles Wolfe started on the mound for the Spartans for his first appearance of the young season. Wolfe pitched a complete game for Sanderson’s first shut out this season striking out eight batters while only allowing one walk, actually a hit batter. Charles spread out Middle Creek’s seven hits. Sanderson had six batters combine for nine hits, led by Mark Peterson’s two hits; a single & triple, to go with 2 RBIs. Charles Wolfe also contributed two hits, both singles, to go along with a RBI. Eric Brommer did his part with two singles. Adding one single each to our offense were Robert Brunson, Max Gagnon and Kyle Wigmore. Sunday, March 2 Spartans offense catches up with our pitching and defense in an exciting weekend game at Cardinal Gibbons On a beautiful Saturday afternoon on 3/1/08 at Cardinal Gibbons baseball field, Sanderson’s pitching and defense carried the team until the offense could get itself going. In the end the Spartans bats pushed across five runs in the top of the seventh inning for a thrilling come from behind win over the Crusaders. In our top of the first inning we are unable to get any batters on base so we head to the bottom of the inning. The Crusaders lead off batter walks on a full count but then Spartans starting pitcher, junior Max Gagnon, strike outs the next three batters. Mark Peterson leads off the Spartans second inning by reaching base on a walk and is moved over to second when Gagnon gets to first on our second walk of the inning. Gagnon is replaced by pinch runner Travis Trumps. Our next three batters can not advance the runners so the score remains 0-0. Before we had three outs Peterson and Trumps executed a double steal that worked to perfection. The first two Crusader batters are out when Gagnon handles a ground ball and making the throw to first baseman Charles Wolfe. The second batter hits a fly ball to center fielder Wood for out #2. Gibbons batter Shannon hits a ball that curves out in left field that easily could have been a double had it not been for left fielder Elliott Brody making a tremendous throw to the infield, caught by Peterson who was backing up. A second batter walks before Gagnon strikes out his fourth batter to end the inning. In our top of the third inning we get our first hit of the game when Trumps hits for a single. That is all we did so we are still all knotted up at 0-0. The Crusaders strike first when they score on a RBI double by Woodworth, who brought in Pompliano who led off the inning with a triple. During the inning Gagnon struck out a batter, Wolfe caught a line drive for an out and then Gagnon tossed a caught ground ball to Wolfe at first base for the final out. The Crusaders take a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning. The Spartans can not respond as our batters go down in order in the top of the third. In the bottom of the fourth Sanderson brings in junior pitcher John McFarling and move’s Gagnon behind the plate. McFarling puts the home team down in order. The lead off batter grounds out to second baseman Sam Beavans who makes the throw to Wolfe at first base. The second is completed when center fielder Wood caught his second fly ball of the afternoon. For the third out Wolfe catches his second line drive of the game. Headed into the fifth inning Sanderson knows there is not much time left as they trail 1-0 in a defensive battle. After our first two batters strike out Beavans reaches on a walk and is moved to second when Wigmore is hit by a pitch. For the third time today we have a runner in scoring position and we can not get that much needed tying run as the last batter grounds out to the pitcher. In the Crusaders fifth, they are only able to get one runner on base after an infield error but there is no harm as pitcher McFarling keeps the Crusaders batters off balance. The lead off batter hits a roller to McFarling, who make the routine play to Wolfe at first. McFarling then gets his first strikeout on a full count and the final out occurs when Wolfe makes his third caught of a fly ball at first base. Time is running out as we head to the top of the sixth inning with the home team holding a slim 1-0 lead. In the sixth inning we get our fourth opportunity to score when Gagnon hits a stand up double but that is all we could muster in the inning. To start the inning Cardinal Gibbons brings in Woodworth to take over for starter Todd. The Spartans make another of their well known defensive play that keeps them in the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. The lead off batter flies out to Kyle Loose in right field for the first out. The second batter, Franklin, receives a walk to first base. Spartan pitcher McFarling follows up that walk with his second strikeout of the inning. Designated hitter Shannon hits a ball to left field that curls left and stays fair. Left fielder Brody makes the throw of the day. He makes a straight throw to third baseman Peterson, who in turns throws to catcher Gagnon as Franklin is coming home. Gagnon has the plate blocked and tags out the runner for out #3. Inning over and now we head to our last at bat needing at least one run to tie. You know it is a good sign when you are trailing by one, on the road, it’s the last inning and your lead off batter finds a way to get on base. For only the second time today, our lead off batter got on base. Brody, after his tremendous throw in the last inning, is our lead off batter and gets on base when he is hit by a pitch. Our next batter strikes out but not before Brody stole second base to get in scoring position. Loose gets a single, moving Brody to third when he then tried to get home but is thrown out at the plate. We now have two outs, one runner at second, and behind by one. Our lead off batter Wigmore comes through in the clutch with his first hit of the game, that also scores our first run when Loose scores. Eric Brommer gets his first of the game at a timely time, by getting a single that moves Wigmore to third base. Wigmore will then score the go ahead run on a pass ball. Wolfe gets on base with a walk so we now have two runners on base. Peterson delivers the big hit of the game with a single that plates both Wolfe and Brommer that pushes the Spartans lead to 4-1. All with two outs. Gagnon gets his second hit of the day, and he is followed by Wood who got his first hit of the day. The bases are loaded and two outs when Brody comes to bat for the second time in the inning. He gets a walk to bring in Peterson. We now head to the bottom of the seventh inning after scoring five runs to take a 5-1 lead. Spartans sophomore pitcher Bryan Burke now takes to the mound with hopes of shutting down the Crusaders. Burke responds by putting the Crusaders down in order. The first batter hits a grounder to Wigmore who throws to Wolfe at first for out #1. Out #2 came about when center fielder Wood caught his third fly ball of the game. Burke decided to take care of the last out himself by striking out the last batter. The final score was Sanderson 5, Cardinal Gibbons 1. Cardinal Gibbons had four hits; led by Shannon with a single and double. Pompliano added a triple and Woodworth had a double. Gibbons starting pitcher Todd pitched five innings, not allowing any runs, struck out seven and walked three. Reliever Woodworth came in to start the sixth inning, allowing six hits, struck out two, walked three and allowed five runs in taking the loss. The Spartans collected eight hits from seven different batters. Max Gagnon had two hitters; a double and single. Mark Peterson collected a single to go with his two RBIs, Kyle Wigmore had a single as well as a RBI, and Elliott Brody had a RBI when he walked with the bases loaded. Adding in singles were Eric Brommer, Kyle Loose, Travis Trumps and Kyle Wood. Max Gagnon started on the mound and pitched three innings before moving behind the plate. Max struck out five batters, walked two, and allowed three hits and one run. Winning pitcher John McFarling came in and pitched three innings and did not allow any runs. John struck out two batters, walked one and allowed only one hit. Bryan Burke pitched the last inning, facing the minimum of three batters. Bryan struck out one and did not allow any runs or hits to preserve the win. Saturday, March 8 Spartans score early for 5-1 victory over Panther Creek
Sanderson scored three runs in the first inning on their way to 5-1 non-conference win over the Catamounts of Panther Creek. Spartans starting pitcher Charles Wolfe started the game off with three strike outs in the first inning. SHS lead off batter Kyle Wigmore was hit by a pitch and was moved to second base when Eric Brommer hit for a single. Wigmore later scored on Wolfe’s single. With runners on second and third, Mark Peterson hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Brommer. Max Gagnon’s (pinch runner Seth Elderkin) single would score Wolfe. Kyle Wood got our fourth hit of the inning and was stranded on first base. In the Catamounts top of the second inning, Sanderson’s Wolfe collected his fourth and fifth strike outs, allowed a single to Eberhart while Sanderson second baseman Sam Beavans cleanly handed a ground ball to throw out a runner with his throw to first baseman Peterson. Sanderson second inning produced Brommer’s double for our only hit of the inning. As we head to the top of the third inning it is still 3-0 in Sanderson’s favor. Spartan pitcher Charles Wolfe is in a groove as he gets three straight backward K’s. Our batters were able to get two more hits to push across one more run in the third inning. Peterson led off with a single and he moved to second on a fielder’s choice by Gagnon. Wood collected his second hit of the night to move Peterson to third. Elliot Brody brought in Peterson with a fielders choice. After four innings it is SHS 4, Panther Creek 0. Wolfe allows a single to Guy for Panther Creek and that runner is left stranded on the bases. Right fielder Kyle Loose caught a fly ball for an out while Wolfe was involved in the other two outs with his ninth strike out and fielding a ground ball to first base. In the bottom of the fourth, with two outs and nobody on, the Spartans load the bases. Brommer gets his second double of the game, followed by a walk issued to Wolfe (pinch runner Travis Trumps). Peterson followed with our second walk of the inning but we could not get any runs across. Sanderson starting pitcher Wolfe went into the fifth inning and pitched to four batters before giving way to Eric Brommer. Before doing so Wolfe got his tenth strike out of the game and allowed a single to Carter. Brommer faced one batter who hit a grounder to SS Wigmore, who made the throw to Peterson at first base. In our half of the fifth inning Wood leads off with his third hit of the game, sliding head first into third for a triple. Alex Baldy helps out the team with a well hit sacrifice fly to right field, to bring in Wood from third. As we head to the top of the sixth inning Sanderson increased its lead to 5-0. Brommer returns to the mound for Sanderson in the top of the sixth. Out #1 came about with a backward K, followed by a fly ball to SS Wigmore for out #2. Eberhart gets his second hit of the night which places runners on first and second when Brommer gets the last batter to fly out to Elderkin in right field for the final out. In Sanderson’s half of the inning we go down 1-2-3. The Spartans bring on Wigmore to close the deal in the top of the seventh inning. The first two batters both hit grounders that are fielded by second baseman Beavans who makes the throw to first baseman John McFarling Catamount batter Mazzone gets a double and scores on a hit ball by Litke. Wigmore gets the final out on a grounder that he fields and throws to first for the final out of the game. Final score Sanderson 5, Panther Creek 1. Panther Creek starting pitcher Nelson pitched three innings, had 3 K’s, 1 BB, and allowed four runs. Reliever Rogacki pitched three innings, had 1 K, 2 BB, allowed 2 hits and allowed 1 run. The Catamounts were led by Eberhart with 2 singles. Three other batters had one hit each. Spartan pitchers, led by starting pitcher Charles Wolfe, held their opponent to one run or less for the third straight game. Wolfe earned his second win of the young season. Tuesday, March 11 Spartans score early in 5-2 win over Cary on 3/10/08
With four hits in their first at bat Sanderson pushed across three runs, after there were two outs, for an early 3-0 lead after one inning of play. In the top of the first, the visiting Imps sent four batters to the plate. Spartan starting pitcher Max Gagnon struck out two batters while SS Kyle Wigmore gets a put out when he grabs a grounder and makes the throw to first baseman Charles Wolfe. Sanderson comes to bat for the first time and sends eight batters to the plate. Third baseman Eric Brommer gets on with a single and DH Mark Peterson walks on a full count. Gagnon hits a triple to deep right field that plates our first two runs of the game, scoring Brommer and Peterson. Kyle Wood would bring in pinch runner Travis Trumps (runner for Gagnon) with his well hit single to right center. After one inning, SHS takes an early 3-0 lead. Cary returns to the plate in top of the second inning but goes down 1-2-3. Gagnon strikes out the lead off batter for an out, center fielder Kyle Wood catches a fly ball for another out and SS Wigmore gets his second put out of the game with this throw to Wolfe at first. Sanderson also only sends three batters to the plate in the bottom of the second. Robert Brunson led off with a single but is out when he is caught in a pickle between first and second. In their top of the third inning Cary puts some pressure on Sanderson as they score two runs. The lead batter is out on a fly ball hit to Spartan right fielder Seth Elderkin. The next batter gets a single and in what was clearly the defensive play of the game, Sanderson left fielder Elliot Brody dove for a fly ball to his right that was well hit to the outfield near the foul line territory. Brody was able to catch the ball while diving and quickly got up and throws the ball back to the infield to keep the runner at first base from advancing to second. AWESOME! The next Imp batter hits a hard hit ball to right field for a triple that plates two runs. First baseman Wolfe caught a foul ball in front of the visitors dug out for the final out. Sanderson needs to respond and they do. DH Mark Peterson starts us off with a single up the middle and moves to third base on Gagnon’s single. Peterson would score his second run of the game on a pass ball with Brody at the plate. After three innings it is now 4-2, the Spartans lead. In the top of the fourth inning, the Imps have the heart of their order coming to the plate, batters 3-4-5. Spartan pitcher Gagnon strikes out the first batter, which is followed by a fly ball out by SS Wigmore. Cary squeezes in a single before SS Wigmore makes the easy play at short by grabbing the ground ball and tagging second base for the force out. In Sanderson’s bottom half of the inning, Brunson gets his second hit of the night, a single, but that is all we can muster so we head to the fifth inning with Sanderson up 4-2. In Cary’s half of the fifth lead off batter Rossi gets a double and Gagnon then gets his fifth strike out of the game, followed by a Brunson put out to Wolfe at first base on a ground ball, that advances Rossi to third. The final batter hits a fly ball to center fielder Wood for the final out. In our bottom of the fifth Brommer leads off with a walk. Wolfe hits a deep fly ball for an out to right field that moves Brommer over to third, after Brommer had gotten to second base on a wild pitch. Peterson then helps the Sanderson cause with a sacrifice to deep center field that scores Brommer from third base. After five innings it is now Sanderson 5, Cary 2. In the sixth inning Spartan pitcher Gagnon puts Cary’s batters down 1-2-3 for the second time today. SS Wigmore handles the first two outs with ground balls thrown to Wolfe at first base. Second baseman Brunson gets the final out with a grounder. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Sanderson’s batters also go down 1-2-3. Sanderson brings on pitcher Mark Peterson, replacing Gagnon, to close the game out. Starting pitcher Gagnon now moves behind the plate. The lead off batter is out one when SS Wigmore makes his sixth put out of the game with his play of a grounder and throws to first. The lone batter to reach base was on a walk. Peterson then gets a strike out and a fly ball hit to center fielder Wood for the final out of the game. Final score, Sanderson 5, Cary 2. Cary collected four hits by four different batters. Tuesday, March 18 Spartans visit Wakefield in CAP 7 opener on 3/14/2008
Unlike last year when both games went extra innings, Wakefield defeated Sanderson 8-1 in seven innings to open conference play.
Sanderson started strong when lead off batter Kyle Wigmore led off with a single off Wolverines starting pitcher Yeung. Wigmore was moved to second when Eric Brommer’s single was hit into right field. Charles Wolfe plated Wigmore with his sacrifice to left field.
Spartans starting pitcher Mark Peterson put down the Wolverines in order. Peterson caught a grounder and made the throw to first baseman Wolfe. The second out occurred when center fielder Kyle Wood caught a fly ball followed by second baseman Robert Brunson made a play on a grounder and his throw to Wolfe at first. After one inning Sanderson takes an early 1-0 lead.
In the second Wood led off with a walk but is out as the result of a double play. Right fielder Travis Trumps reached base on a walk for our only other base runner for the inning. The Wolverines do get a batter on base by a walk but Spartan pitcher Peterson gets all three outs with strike outs as the score remains 1-0 in favor of Sanderson as we head to the third inning.
In out top of the third Brommer got all the way to third base after he received a walk and got two passed balls. The next two batters could not get Brommer in so we head to Wakefield’s turn at the plate.
Wakefield would get their first hit of the game with a single but the Sanderson defense shuts them down the rest of the inning. Peterson gets out number one when he catches a grounder and makes the throw to Wolfe at first. Third baseman Eric Brommer gets the next two outs by fielding grounders and making his throws to first base. In the defensive play of the game Brommer, as he has done many times before, laid out to get a hit and got back up to make his throw to first base.
In our top of the fourth inning, we had two outs and nobody on base when Elliot Brody and Trumps hit back-to-back singles, with Brody reaching third on Trumps hit. We would end the inning that way.
Wakefield’s first three batters in the fourth inning would reach base with two single’s and a double. Another batter would hit a sacrifice to help account for Wakefield’s three runs. The outs came when Peterson caught a roller and made the throw to first base. Right fielder Trumps caught a fly ball for out number two and Peterson got his fourth strike out to end the inning and Wakefield now leads 3-1 as we head to the fifth inning.
In our top of the fifth Wigmore gets on base for the second time, this time with a walk. Brommer is on base for the third time in three at bats after he reaches on an error. The Spartans would load the bases after Wolfe reaches with a walk and one out. The inning would end with Wakefield turning a double play. Wakefield then comes to the plate and the first two batters are out; fly ball to left fielder Brody and a fly ball to Peterson, Wakefield got their first hit of the inning followed by a walk before Peterson got a backward strikeout, his fifth strikeout of the game, for the last out of the inning.
In our top of the sixth our batters go down 1-2-3 as Wakefield comes back to the plate and sends ten batters to the plate. With the first three batters getting a home run, single and a walk, Spartan starting pitcher Peterson is replaced by John McFarling. McFarling gets the first out of the inning with a ground ball hit to third baseman Brommer who throws to Wolfe at first base. The next three batters all reach base before Sanderson would bring in their third pitcher of the inning, Eric Brommer. Brommer is greeted with a single to place runners at first and second. Out number two came when Sanderson catcher Max Gagnon threw to SS Wigmore as the runner on second was leaning towards third. Wigmore then threw to Peterson, our third baseman, who threw back to Brunson covering second base and eventually placed the tag on the runner for a perfectly executed pickle. The third out was when Brommer struck out his first batter.
Wakefield has now increased their lead to 8-1 as we had to bat at the top of the seventh inning.
Sanderson’s batters go down 1-2-3 as the game is called and Wakefield wins the first of the two meeting between these two teams this year.
Wakefield’s Yeung pitched six innings allowing four hits, struck out four, walked six and allowed one run in getting the win. Reliever Woodell pitched the last inning for the Wolverines with a 1-2-3 inning.
Wakefield hitters were led by Taylor Nelson (2-4, HR, 2 runs scored, 1 RBI), J. Dowdy (2-4, 2B, RBI, run scored), B. Yeung (2-3, RBI, run scored), and J. Riggleman (1-3, 3B, 2 RBI’s, run scored).
Sanderson starting pitcher Mark Peterson pitched five innings allowing five hits, six runs, had five strikeouts and five walks in taking the loss. Reliever John McFarling came on in the sixth inning and faced four batters before being replaced by Eric Brommer. McFarling allowed two hits, walked a batter and allowed two runs. Brommer faced three batters allowing two hits and had a strike out, without allowing a run.
SHS had 4 hitters with one hit each; Kyle Wigmore (1-3, BB, run scored), Eric Brommer (1-3, BB), Elliot Brody (1-3) and Travis Trumps (1-2, BB). Friday, March 21 Capitals edge Spartans 2-1 at Broughton
Although Sanderson was about to place runners on base all game long, they leave 14 runners on base in losing to CAP 7 rival Broughton on 3.17.2008.
In the first inning the Spartans do not get a hit but leave one runner on base, Eric Brommer who reached on an error. Sanderson starting pitcher Charles Wolfe allows a lead off double to Broughton. On the next batter SS Kyle Wigmore makes a play on a grounder and makes the throw to third baseman Brommer. Out two came about when Brommer makes the throw to second baseman Robert Brunson for the force out. After a single is hit, SS Wigmore plays the ground ball with the easy out to first.
In our top of the second inning, we send six batters to the plate and leave all three runners on base. Peterson led off with a walk, followed by singles by Kyle Wood and Elliot Brody. The next three batters are out so the inning is over with no runs scored. Broughton goes down in order as Spartan pitcher Charles Wolfe gets his first two strikeouts of the game. After two innings it remains scoreless.
Lead off batter Brommer reaches base with his first hit of the game, a single and moves to third base on Peterson’s single to left center. We leave these two runners on base as we end the third. Broughton would score the first runs of the game as they bang out two hits and get a walk to score two runs. After three innings the Capitals lead 2-0.
Sanderson’s first two batters of the fourth inning reach base; Brody’s second single and Travis Trumps walk. Our next three batters can not advance these runners. Broughton goes down 1-2-3 as pitcher Wolfe gets his third & fourth strikeouts of the game. After four innings it remains 2-0 Broughton.
In the fifth inning the Spartans load the bases with one out before Broughton changes pitchers. Max Gagnon is our first base runner with his single and he is moved to second when Peterson gets his second single of the game. Wood would load the bases with one out when he battles at the plate for a walk. Our next batters are not able to advance the runners so we remain behind 2-0 headed to the bottom of the fifth inning. Broughton would not score in the fifth as SHS pitcher Wolfe gets his fifth strikeout of the day.
In our top of the sixth, Spartans Wigmore and Gagnon would get on base by walks and stay there as once again we can not advance them. Broughton’s lead off batter in the bottom of the sixth reaches base on a hit infield error and is later thrown out when Spartan catcher Gagnon threw to second baseman Sam Beavans who placed the tag on the runner. Spartan pitcher Wolfe gets his sixth strikeout in the inning as well. We head to the top of the seventh trailing Broughton 2-0.
Sanderson’s lead off batter for the inning, Peterson, sends the second pitch he sees over the center field wall for a solo home run. This was Sanderson’s first home run this season. Right fielder Trumps gets our second hit of the inning but he is left on base. The games ends with the final score Broughton 2, SHS 1.
Broughton starting pitcher T. J. Roebuck pitched 4 1/3 innings, struck out four, walked 2 and did not allow any runs, to gain the win. Reliever D. Brown pitched 2 2/3 innings, struck out six, walked two and allowed one run for the save.
Broughton hitters were led by D. Brown (2-2, run scored) and J. Redd (1-3, 2 RBIs).
Sanderson pitcher Charles Wolfe (2-1) pitched a very good complete game. He struck out six batters over six innings, scattered five hits and allowed two runs.
Sanderson was led by Mark Peterson (3-3, HR, RBI), Elliot Brody (2-3). Adding singles each were Travis Trumps (1-2), Eric Brommer (1-4), Max Gagnon (1-3, BB), and Kyle Wood (1-3, BB). Friday, March 21 Spartans snap three game losing streak at Cary
On 3.19.2008 the Spartans took care of business by sweeping the season series (2-0) over the Imps of Cary.
Sanderson’s lead off batter Eric Brommer got the game started with his single to right field, which was followed by Kyle Wood’s single to right center. Wood is out a fielder’s choice hit by Mark Peterson, which also scores Brommer from third base for an early 1-0 lead. Spartan starting pitcher Max Gagnon puts the Cary batters down 1-2-3, ending the inning with a strike out. In between center fielder Wood catches a fly ball and SS Kyle Wigmore throws to second baseman Robert Brunson.
In out top of the second our batters go down 1-2-3. Cary’s batters get their first hit of the game, a single, in the inning. Wood catches his second pop fly for an out. Wigmore and Brunson team up for another out and Brunson throws to first baseman Charles Wolfe for the final out. Sanderson retains a slim 1-0 lead.
Brommer reaches base on an error as our only runner in the third inning. The Imps lead off batter reaches with a single, followed by an error and another single. Out number one is accomplished by third baseman Brommer on a pop fly with the bases loaded on an infield fly rule. In a spectacular defensive play to keep Cary off the board, SS Wigmore catches a line drive for out two and then steps on second to get out three as the runner had taken off too early for the double play. After three innings it remains SHS 1, Cary 0.
With two outs and no one on in the top of the fourth, Wolfe hits the ball deep to left field for a stand up double. Gagnon follows with his first home run of the year to left field as Sanderson expands its lead to 3-0. Cary answers when their lead off runner reaches base on an error and later scores on an infield error. Out number one occurred when pitcher Gagnon threw to first base and later Wigmore, Brunson and Wolfe teamed up for our second double play of the game. After four innings it is now Sanderson 3, Cary 1.
Seth Elderkin led off our fifth inning with his single to center field. He is knocked off the base paths when he is the victim of a double play. For the third inning Cary’s lead off batter reaches first base. All three outs this inning involved SS Wigmore and second baseman Brunson. Two outs involve Wigmore tossing to Brunson covering second base and then Brunson returns the favor when he tosses to Wigmore covering second.
In our top of the sixth we go down 1-2-3. Cary also goes down 1-2-3. Wood dives for a catch in center field for out one, first baseman Wolfe plays a grounder at first and pitcher Gagnon strikes out the final batter. After six innings it remains 3-1 in favor of the Spartans.
In our last at bat Wolfe reaches with an error while Brunson would get our only hit of the game, a single to right field.
Cary comes to bat only needing two runs to tie the game in their bottom half of the seventh. Sanderson switches pitcher and catcher by bringing Bryan Burke to the mound and Gagnon goes behind the dish. Brunson got out number one when he threw to first base after playing a grounder, Wigmore caught a fly ball deep in foul territory behind third base and later tosses to second baseman Brunson for the force out at second base for the final out of the game. Burke does not allow any runs as he closes the door on the Imps.
Cary starting pitcher Kondor pitched a complete game, striking out one, no walks, allowed six hits and three runs.
Cary is led at the plate by Kondor (2-3).
Spartan starting pitcher Max Gagnon (2-0) pitched six innings with two strike outs and did not allow any walks. He scattered five hits and allowed one run. Bryan Burke got the save when he pitched the final inning, with one strike out and one walk
Our leading hitter was Max Gagnon (1-3, HR, 2 RBI’s) followed by Charles Wolfe (1-3, dbl, scored). Contributing a single each were Eric Brommer (1-3, run), Robert Brunson (1-3), Seth Elderkin (1-3), and Kyle Wood (1-3).
Friday, March 21 Pitching and defense carry Spartans to CAP 7 win
On a windy day at Sanderson Field at Optimist Park on 3.20.2008, Spartan senior pitcher Mark Peterson pitched a two hitter in earning his first win of the season, 1-1 this season. The Spartans offense could only muster five singles off Millbrook Wildcats pitcher Jake Harris.
In the first the lone Wildcat runner reached base on an infield error while Peterson got his first two strike outs of the game. Second baseman Robert Brunson played a grounder and made the throw to first baseman Charles Wolfe. In our half of the inning our first two batters Eric Brommer and Kyle Wood, each collect a single but as has been the norm so far this season we strand both runners on base. After one inning we are knotted up at 0-0.
In Millbrook’s top of the second inning, Peterson picks up strike outs three and four before SS Kyle Wigmore plays a ground ball and makes the throw to first for the third out. Sanderson’s lead off batter in the second, Wolfe, reaches with a single to right field and advances to second on Max Gagnon’s fielder’s choice to first base. Wolfe then advances to third on a pass ball. Before our third out Seth Elderkin would reach base on a walk. We strand two more batters and the score remains 0-0 after two innings.
Millbrook gets their first hit of the game and once the Wildcat batter is on base, Spartan pitcher Peterson picks him off with a nice throw to first baseman Wolfe, who tags out the runner. Peterson was also involved with a grounder that he threw to first base for another out. The final out came about with Peterson’s fifth strike out.
For the third straight inning Sanderson’s lead off batter, this time Kyle Wood, reaches base. In fact our first three batters of Wood, Wigmore and Peterson, reach base on Wildcat errors. We have three on and no outs. Wolfe would hit a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Wood. This turned out to be the winning hit and run of the game. After three innings Sanderson takes the lead 1-0.
Millbrook would send four batters to the plate in the fourth inning with one batter reached base on an infield error. Brommer played a ground ball and threw to first for the first out. Second baseman Brunson made his throw to first on a ground ball for another out. Pitcher Peterson recorded his sixth strike out for an out as well. The Spartans go down 1-2-3- in their half of the fourth inning and it remained 1-0 Sanderson.
Spartan Peterson strikes out the lead off batter for his seventh strike out of the game in the top of the fifth inning. SS Wigmore easily makes his throw to Wolfe at first base after fielding a grounder. Third baseman Brommer catches a fly ball for the final out in the top of the fifth inning. Wigmore hit for a single to right center field to become our first base runner of the inning. He is followed by fellow Spartan Peterson who hits for a single to left field. We leave these two runners on base as we head to the top of the sixth inning with a slim 1-0 lead.
Sanderson pitcher Mark Peterson is still going strong and records his eighth strike out when he fans the Wildcats lead off batter in the sixth inning. Brommer made another routine play at third base on a ground ball that he throws to first base. The third batter of the inning gets Millbrook’s second hit of the game. While the fourth Millbrook batter is batting the Millbrook runner on first base is caught in a pickle when Peterson throws to Wolfe at first. Wolfe chases the runner to second base where SS Wigmore receives the throw from Wolfe and tags out the runner for the final out of the inning.
In our half of the sixth inning we go down 1-2-3 so here we are headed to the top of the seventh. The Wildcats lead off batter is out on another grounder played by Brommer at third base for out number one. In back-to-back controversial ball four calls by the man in blue, Millbrook’s next two batters walk to place runners on first and second and one out. This is the first time all game that Millbrook has had a runner on second. Millbrook’s next batter is struck out by Peterson for his ninth strike out of the game. On strike three to this latest strike out victim, Spartan catcher Gagnon throw a bullet to first baseman Wolfe who places the tag on the base runner for a double play and out #3. What a way to end a game.
Final score Sanderson 1, Millbrook 0.
Millbrook only had two hits for the game, both singles. Harris and Redmond got the singles.
Millbrook pitcher Jake Harris pitched well in taking a tough loss. Harris had four strike outs and one walk and allowed five Sanderson singles.
The Spartans banged out five singles for the night. Leading the way was Charles Wolfe with a single and sacrifice fly/RBI that scored the only run of the game. Getting a single each were Eric Brommer, Mark Peterson, Kyle Wigmore, and Kyle Wood.
Spartan pitcher Mark Peterson was in total control as he pitched a scoreless complete game. Mark struck out nine batters and had three walks. Thursday, March 27 Spartans pitcher Wolfe pitches his second shut out of the season in leading Sanderson to CAP 7 Conference win over Leesville
Sanderson starting pitcher Charles Wolfe set the tone of the game early when he struck out the first two Leesville Pride batters to start the game on March 25, 2008. With their third straight win Sanderson moved to 2-2 in the CAP 7 and 7-4 overall. They play next in the Leith Invitational Tournament held in Knightdale. Sanderson is the tournaments defending champions as they won the ignaural tournament last year.
In Leesville’s first they would not score as two batters struck out and third baseman Eric Brommer fielded a ground ball and threw to first baseman Mark Peterson for the third out. The Spartans come to bat to see what they can do against their CAP 7 rival. Brommer led off the inning with a single followed by Kyle Wood who reaches on an error. Kyle Wigmore brings in Brommer with his single to right field, as well as moving Wood to third base. Peterson hit a deep sacrifice fly to left center field to plate Wood. After one inning Sanderson take the early 2-0 lead.
Leesville’s lead off batter reached base with a single. Wolfe gets his third and fourth strikeouts of the game in this inning. In between a Pride batter was walked so we have runners on first and second with one out. Wolfe then catches a grounder and throws to third baseman Brommer to get the lead runner. In our half of the second inning Max Gagnon (pinch runner Kyle Loose) reaches on an infield error but we do not get any runs or hits so it remains 2-0.
Spartans pitcher Wolfe struck out three batters in the third inning to give him seven for the game. In the third inning Leesville gets their second single of the game without scoring on the Spartans defense.
In the bottom of our third inning with two outs and nobody on base, Sanderson gets their bats going again. Wigmore walks and stole second base. He is brought home on Peterson’s double to deep center field. After three innings it is now SHS 3, Leesville 0.
In Leesville’s fourth inning, Sanderson’s second baseman Robert Brunson caught a line drive for out one and SS Wigmore played a ground ball with his throw to Peterson at first. Leesville had a batter reach base on a single which was followed by the next batter trying to stretch his single into a double when he was thrown out at second. The throw and tag worked this way – CF Wood threw to SS Wigmore who threw to second baseman Brunson who placed the tag on the sliding runner. That is how you play defense.
Wolfe led off our fourth inning with a stand up triple and Gagnon (pinch runner Loose) followed with a walk. Brunson knocked in Wolfe with his sacrifice fly to center field. Travis Trumps gets on with a walk and that is it for the inning. Sanderson increases it lead to 4-0 after four innings.
In the fifth inning Leesville goes down 1-2-3. Two batters hit ground balls that are fielded by Peterson who makes the out at first base. SS Wigmore then gets the ground ball hit to him and throws to first base.
With one hit, a walk and an error Sanderson pushes across one more run in the fifth inning. Brommer leads off and reaches base on an error. Wigmore moves Brommer over with his fielder’s choice and Peterson (pinch runner Al Baldy) gets his third RBI of the game when his single to left scored Brommer. Elliot Brody reaches on a walk and Sanderson heads to the top of the sixth with a 5-0 lead.
Leesville does not get any hits in the sixth inning. Wolfe gets his eighth strike out of the game, SS Wigmore throws out a runner at first base and second baseman Brunson makes his throw to first base for the final out.
Sanderson comes to bat and sends six batters to the plate as the Spartans adds two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Loose is our first base runner as he reaches base with a walk. With two outs and Loose on second base Brommer gets his second hit of the night and scores Loose. With Brommer sitting on third base, Wood hits a roller down the third base line allowing Brommer to run past the fielders and scored to give Sanderson a 7-0 lead headed to the top of the seventh inning.
The first two Pride batters hit deep fly balls to CF Wood and we quickly have two up, two down. The third Leesville batter hits a ground ball to third baseman Brommer who makes the throw to Peterson at first base for the last out.
The Pride starting pitcher Steinbugler allowed four runs, struck out one and walked two in taking the loss. The second Leesville pitcher Gentry pitched one inning and allowed one run while walking two batters. Dorsett was their last pitcher pitching one inning, allowed two runs and two hits, to go along with one strike out and one walk.
Four Leesville batters had one single each; Brown, Dorsett, Kelly and Lyons.
The Spartans starting pitcher Charles Wolfe pitched his second straight complete game in improving to 3-1 on the year. Charles had great control in getting his eight strike outs and one walked batter. He scattered the Pride’s four hits over his seven innings.
Sanderson’s pitchers have now combined for 17 straight scoreless innings over our last three games. Of course they could not do this alone as it is well documented with the numerous outstanding defensive plays in the field.
Sanderson’s collected seven hits against the three Leesville pitchers. We were led by Mark Peterson (2-2, SAC, 3 RBI’s) and Eric Brommer (2-4, RBI). Kyle Wigmore (1-3, RBI), Charles Wolfe (1-2, 3B), and Kyle Wood (1-3, RBI) contributed one hit each. Robert Brunson rounded out the scoring with his sacrifice/RBI in the fourth inning. Monday, March 31 Spartan bats come alive in Spring Break tournament
Sanderson’s batters came out swinging on a cold and wet opening day at the Leith Auto Park East Round Table Invitational spring break tournament on March 29, 2008. Spartan parent Mrs. Tammie Wood began the opening ceremonies by singing the national anthem. The Spartans, defending champions, then started tournament play against the Golden Hawks of Holly Springs.
As the visitors the Spartans batted first but Kyle Wigmore’s single and stolen base was all the noise we could make.
In their half of the first the Golden Hawks of Holly Springs scored one unearned run to take a 1-0 lead. The Hawks got two of their game hits in this inning. Second baseman Robert Brunson started a double play with his throw to SS Wigmore who made the tag and threw to first baseman Charles Wolfe. The final out came when Spartan starting pitcher Max Gagnon struck out a batter. As we head to the second inning it is Holly Springs 1, SHS 0.
Spartan left fielder Elliot Brody led off with a single to right field and then stole second base. Wolfe moved Brody to third on a ground ball out to SS and Gagnon then plated Brody with his ground out to SS as well. With two outs and nobody on we put the pedal to the metal. Brunson was our next base runner with his single, followed by Kyle Loose who reached on a wild pitch. Eric Brommer then walked and we have the bases loaded. Kyle Wood also received a walk to bring in Brunson. Wigmore reaches base as well on a walk to score Loose. Our fourth straight walked batter was DH Mark Peterson allowing Wood to score. Brody came to bat for the second time in the inning and got our fifth straight walked batter bringing in Wigmore. The inning ended and we go into the bottom of the second with SHS taking a 5-1 lead.
Holly Springs goes down 1-2-3 as Brody caught a fly ball in left field and Gagnon stuck out two batters.
In their top of the third inning, Sanderson’s batters go down 1-2-3 as well. For the second consecutive inning the Golden Hawks go down in order as well as Spartan pitcher Gagnon got his third straight strike out to start the inning. Then a ground ball was caught by Gagnon, who made the throw to Wolfe at first for the second out. Wolfe caught a foul ball pop up for the final out.
Sanderson comes to bat in their top of the fourth inning swinging away again. For the second time we batted around. Wood was our first base runner with his single and he then advanced to second on a steal. Wigmore’s single to left field moved Wood to third base. Peterson got his second RBI of the game with his single to the left side of field, plating Wood who scored his second run. Wigmore was thrown out at home when Brody hit a ground ball to third. With two outs and two runners on base Wolfe hits his first home run way over the left field wall for a three run homer. Gagnon then made it back-to-back home runs with his solo home run, his second of the year, over the same left field fence. Sam Beavans followed with his first plate appearance of the game and delivered a single up the middle. Loose would get on base with his single and that hit would be our last for the inning. After 3.5 innings Sanderson increases its lead to 10-1.
In their bottom of the fourth Holly Springs would score their second unearned run to cut into our lead at 10-2. Travis Trumps caught a fly ball in center field for the first out and Gagnon got his fifth strike out for the second out. The next batter hits a single to the left side of the infield. Then a batter is hit and we have two runners on when an infield error allows the second Golden Hawks run to cross the plate. On the final out Gagnon caught a line drive to end the inning.
For the third time in five innings Sanderson would bat more than nine batters in scoring seven runs in the fifth. Trumps led off with a single followed by Wigmore with his third hit of the game. Bryan Burke came to bat for the first time and reached on a walk to load the bases and no outs. Another first time batter, Alex Baldy, hit into a fielder’s choice that scores Trumps. John McFarling got an RBI in his first at bat when he also hit into a fielder’s choice, plating Wigmore. Seth Elderkin would walk in his only plate appearance and he was followed by Beavans whose second hit of the game brought in Burke from third. Loose then got on base for the third time today and the bases are now loaded once again. Brommer found a great time to hit as he delivered his first hit of the game, a single, to clear the bases. Trumps is now batting for the second time this inning and gets his second hit of the inning, a double down the left field line. Wigmore also gets on base for the second time this inning with his second walk of the game. We leave the bases loaded but add seven runs to increase our lead to 17-2 after 4.5 innings.
Sanderson brings in relief pitcher Bryan Burke, who caught for pitcher Gagnon the first 4 innings, to pitch which sends Gagnon behind the plate as our catcher. Burke strikes out the first batter and then walks the second. Beavans plays a ground ball for the easy out to McFarling at first for the second out. The game ends when McFarling goes for a ground ball far to his right and out runs the hitter to first with his tag at the bag. Game over.

Sanderson now heads into the semi-final bracket on Monday vs an unknown team at this time.

Spartans edge WF-R Cougars in CAP 7 in the first night game of the season
Behind senior pitcher Mark Peterson’s stellar performance of nine strikeouts and one run allowed, Sanderson improved its conference record to 3-2 after its 4-1 road win over Wake Forest-Rolesville (WF-R) on 4.8.08. This placed Sanderson in a three way tie for first place in the conference.
In our top of the first we scored our first run when Kyle Wigmore’s double brought in Kyle Wood who had reached base on a single. Other base runners in the inning included Peterson who walked, Elliot Brody who reached on an infield error and Charles Wolfe who reached on a single. WFR had one single in their half of the inning before the inning ended with SHS ahead, 1-0. Spartan defenders had an errorless inning with the first out occurring when Peterson fielded a grounder to first baseman Wolfe, SS Wigmore caught a pop up and third baseman Eric Brommer made the catch and throw to Wolfe at first.
In the second Sanderson’s lone base runner was Travis Trumps who reached on a single and was left stranded at third base. Spartans pitcher Peterson allowed a lead off double before he struck out two batters and a third batter was out on a ground ball to Robert Brunson at second, who made the throw to Wolfe at first.
In the third inning we had two base runners, Peterson and Wolfe, reach base on errors and that was it for our portion of the inning. Sanderson pitcher Peterson gets a backward K on the lead off batter followed by a walk to the next batter. Spartan catcher Max Gagnon was once again successful in throwing out a stealing base runner with his throw and tag on the runner by second baseman Brunson for the second out. Peterson got his fourth strikeout in three innings to end the inning. After three innings it remains 1-0 Sanderson.
Our lead off batter in the fourth inning, Brunson, reached on an error and later scored when Wigmore hit a ground ball to third base. Trumps received a walk and Brommer hit for a single as our other base runners in the inning. WF-R batters went down 1-2-3 as Peterson got his fifth strikeout victim, and second baseman Brunson and SS Wigmore made throws to first baseman Wolfe for the other two outs. After four innings SHS now leads 2-0.
In Sanderson’s fifth, our two base runners would be Wolfe when he got his second hit of the time and Peterson reached after he was hit by a pitch. In their half of the fifth inning, the Cougars took advantage of two walked batters in scoring their only run of the game. WF-R did get a double that plated their runner. After five complete innings Sanderson’s lead is reduced to 2-1.
Sanderson’s Brommer got his second hit of the game but that was all we could produce for the inning. WF-R’s lead off batter in the bottom of the sixth was able to reach base on an error. With a well placed bunt toward first base by the next batter WF-R’s lead off batter tried to sneak into third base. In the defensive play of the game, Spartan catcher Gagnon ran down to cover third base. After pitcher Peterson covered first and got the out, Paterson made a perfect throw to Gagnon at third base, who then placed the tag on the sliding base runner to complete the double play. Peterson then stepped back on the mound after that exciting play and got his eighth strike out of the game for the final out. As we head to the last inning it remains SHS 2, WF-R 1.
Needing to find a way to back up our pitcher, Spartan batters were ready to step it up. Lead off batter Wigmore was hit by the first pitch of the inning. Peterson’s first hit of the game moved Wigmore to third base. With two outs and runners on third and second, Wolfe hit his third single of the game to score both Wigmore and Peterson (pinch runner Alex Baldy). As we head to the Cougars last at bat SHS has taken a 4-1 lead.
WF-R lead off batter hit a grounder that SS Wigmore made into a routine out to first. The next batter reached on a single followed by the second out of the inning when Brody in left field caught a fly ball. The final out was recorded with Peterson’s ninth strikeout of the game.
Final score SHS 4, WFR 1.
Sanderson improved to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in CAP 7, while WF-R dropped to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the CAP 7.
WF-R Cougars pitcher Tyler Buckley pitched six strong innings in taking the loss. Buckley struck out four, walked two and allowed three runs. Reliever Renn pitched the last inning while allowing two hits and one run.
The Cougars had five batters with one hit each; Davidson and J. Renn had one 2B, while Coleman, Williamson and Muse each had one single.
Spartan pitcher Mark Peterson improved his record to 2-1 with a complete game outing. Mark had nine strike outs and only two walks in seven innings. He allowed five hits and one run.
Sanderson collected nine hits led by Charles Wolfe (3-4, 2 RBI’s). Our other multi-hit player was Eric Brommer (2-4). Helping out with one hit each were Kyle Wigmore (1-3, 2 RBI’s), Mark Peterson (1-2), Travis Trumps (1-2, W) and Kyle Wood (1-4). Sunday, April 13 Spartans sweep season series with Middle Creek
On 4.10.08 Sanderson played outside the conference for the final time this regular season when they visited the Middle Creek Mustangs a member of the Tri-Eight. Aided by 15 hits (our scorers had 16 hits as a double was hit to center field that their fielder dove for and was unable to hold onto it) by ten batters as the Spartans defeated the Mustangs 17-6 in six innings. The Spartans concluded their out of conference play with a record of 6-2.
Sanderson struck early as we pushed across one run in the first inning. With two outs and nobody on base Kyle Wigmore reached on a single and scored on Elliot Brody’s single to center field. In between Charles Wolfe hit a single. Spartans sophomore pitcher Bryan Burke took the mound in his first start of the season as the Mustangs come to bat. Two of the three outs were by Burke strike outs and right fielder Seth Elderkin caught a fly ball for another out. The Mustangs were able to get one hit in the inning.
The Spartans sent eight batters to the plate in their top of the second inning as they increased their lead to 4-0. Elderkin was our first base runner as he reached with a single. Now with two outs and Elderkin on base we find a way to knock in three runs. Eric Brommer was walked and Kyle Wood hit a single into left field. Our three runs were scored off errors as Elderkin, Brommer and Wood would score. Spartan pitcher Burke returned to the mound and put down the Mustangs in order. A fly ball to left field was caught by Brody, a pop up to first baseman Wolfe was an out and a ground ball to Sam Beavans at second resulted in a third out to first. After two complete innings it is SHS 4, Middle Creek 0.
On two hits Sanderson adds three more runs in their half of the third inning. Max Gagnon (pinch runner Travis Trumps) led of the hitting with a double to center field and scored on Brommer’s RBI double. In between Elderkin reached base on an error and scored. Brommer also scored on a fielding error. The score is now SHS 7, Middle Creek 0. Middle Creek’s batters start to hit the ball in the third inning as they had three hits, all singles, and scored two runs to cut into Sanderson’s lead after three innings, 7-2. Burke got his third strike out victim in the inning. SS Wigmore and 2B Beavans made plays on ground balls for outs to first baseman John McFarling.
For the fourth straight inning in the game Sanderson was able to push across a run. Wigmore led off the inning by reaching base on an error and moved to second on a fielder’s choice. Gagnon followed with another double to center that plated Wigmore.
Middle Creek was finally able to get to Sanderson starting pitcher Burke when they sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs off three hits and two walks. Their lead off batter reached on a walk and that was followed by a single to right center. With two batters on and no outs we got two outs with a fly ball to Elderkin in right field and a ground ball to SS Wigmore and throw to McFarling at first. The Mustangs then pushed across four runs to cut into Sanderson’s lead, which is now 8-6 after four innings. The Spartans brought in Brommer for Burke during the inning and Eric got the third out when a fly ball is hit to Brody in center field.
We now have a brand new ballgame as Sanderson comes to bat in the top of the fifth inning. As a result of sending 11 batters to the plate Sanderson had six hits and scored six runs. Elderkin led off with his second hit of the game with his double to center. Brommer got his second RBI of the game when he brought in Elderkin with his single. With two outs and one runner on base our batters continued to hit the ball well. Wigmore got his second single with a hit up the middle which was followed by McFarling’s single that scored Brommer. Brody reached base on an error so we have bases loaded and two outs. Gagnon delivered his third double of the game that scored McFarling and Brody. Mark Peterson batted for the first time today and got an RBI on his double when he brought in Gagnon’s pinch runner Trumps. Elderkin came to bat for the second time in the hitting and reached base when he was hit by a pitch. Sanderson increased its lead to 14-6 after 5.5 innings.
Spartan reliever Brommer faced four batters in the bottom of the fifth inning. Second baseman Beavans played a ground ball and made the throw to first for out number one. The Mustangs second batter struck out but reached base on a dropped third strike. Brommer then struck out the next batter and Elderkin caught a fly ball for out three. After five complete innings it remains SHS 14, Middle Creek 6.
In our half of the sixth we got three hits and pushed across three more runs. Brommer led off and got his third hit of the game. Alex Baldy hit a single to the left side of the field. McFarling reached base for the second time today when he worked the count for a walk to load the bases. Brody hit into a fielder’s choice and that got Brommer out in a force out at home. We now have two outs and the bases loaded. Gagnon steps to the plate and delivers a hit to right center field that caused the Mustang fielder to dive and he was not able to catch the ball. This was ruled an error by the Mustangs score keeper but it brought in all three base runners. That is it for the inning as Sanderson increased its lead to 17-6 as Middle Creek comes to bat needing at least two runs to keep the game going.
Sanderson brought in Wigmore to pitch and close the deal. Brommer was moved to shortstop and Mark Peterson is now at third base. The first batter hit a fly ball to Elderkin in right for out number one. SS Brommer caught a ground ball and made the throw to McFarling at first for out number two. Wigmore gets a backward strike out for the final out.
Final score Sanderson 17 Middle Creek 6.
Records Sanderson 10-4 and Middle Creek 5-7.
The Mustangs collected 7 hits and were led by Adams (2-2) and McKernie(2-3). Starting pitcher Blalock took the loss.
Sanderson was credited with 16 hits by ten different players. Leading the way was Max Gagnon (3-5, 3 2B’s, 6 RBI’s, two runs) and Eric Brommer (3-4, 2B, 2 RBI’s three runs). Next with two hits was Seth Elderkin (2-3, 2B, three runs). We also had seven batters with one hit each; Mark Peterson (1-2, 2B, RBI), John McFarling (1-2, RBI, 2 runs), Kyle Wood (1-2. run), Charles Wolfe (1-2), Alex Baldy (1-3, run), Elliot Brody (1-5, RBI, 2 runs) and Kyle Wigmore (1-5, three runs).
Sanderson’s starting pitcher, sophomore Bryan Burke, picked up his first varsity win (1-2). Bryan pitched 3 2/3 innings, struck out two and walked two batters. He allowed six runs on eight hits. Eric Brommer came on in relief and pitched 1 1/3 innings, struck out two batters and did not allow any runs. Kyle Wigmore came in to close the game and pitched the sixth inning. He struck out one batter and did not allow any hits or runs. Sunday, April 13 Spartans finish fourth straight game on the road at Enloe 4.11.08 with a 7-3 CAP 7 Conference win
With their fourth straight road game over the past three weeks, the Spartans return to Sanderson Field at Optimist Park next week for two home CAP 7 conference games. Including today’s 7-3 win the Spartans finished 4-0 and outscored their opponents 45-12 during this four game stretch.
Sanderson opened up at Enloe on a beautiful spring day against the Eagles of Enloe with our first three batters going down in order. Enloe comes to the plate for the first time today and Spartan pitcher Charles Wolfe gave up a lead off single and then walked the second batter. Wolfe got his first strike out of the game for the first out and then gets the Enloe batter to hit into a 6-4-3 double play; SS Kyle Wigmore to 2B Robert Brunson to first baseman Mark Peterson. After one inning it is 0-0. In our top of the second our batters have two strikeouts and a ground ball hit back to the pitcher. Sanderson pitcher Wolfe also puts down the Eagle batters 1-2-3. The first batter hits a fly ball to Elliot Brody in left field, a ground ball is fielded by 3B Eric Brommer who makes the throw to Peterson at first and Wolfe threw his second strikeout of the game for the final out. In Sanderson’s third we would get our first hit of the day when Max Gagnon led off with a single to left field. Right fielder Travis Trumps would get our second hit of the game with his single up the middle. Our third base runner for the inning would be Brommer as he got a free walk to first base. We were not able to push across that first run so we remain tied 0-0 as Enloe comes to bat in their half of the third inning. Enloe’s lead off batter reaches first after he was struck by a pitch. Before the next Eagle batter could complete his at bat, Sanderson catcher Gagnon threw down to first base and Peterson placed a sweeping tag on the runner diving back for the out. Good thing as the batter at the plate eventually hit a solo home run that could have been a two run homer. In a dazzling defensive play 2B Robert Brunson dove to his right, laid stretched out and was able to make the throw to Peterson at first for out number two. Wolfe then got his third strike out of the game to end the inning. After three innings Enloe takes an early 1-0 lead. Sanderson’s batters know what they have to do as they realize that normally a one run lead at Enloe does not hold up. Wigmore, as our lead off batter hustles to first on an infield ground ball which resulted in an Enloe fielding error. Peterson gets his first hit of the game, a single, so we now have two runners on and no outs. Our next batter gets a called third strike looking. Wolfe then hits his second double of the year, scoring Wigmore to tie the game and moved Peterson to third base. Max Gagnon then gets the lead for the Spartans as he hits his third home run of the year with a three run blast over the left field fence. This brings in Peterson and Wolfe (pinch runner Sam Beavans). That was all were could muster for the inning but we head to the fifth inning with our first lead of the day, up 4-1. Spartan pitcher Wolfe now has a lead he can work with as he faces the Enloe batters in the bottom of the fourth. Enloe’s lead off batter hits a grounder to SS Wigmore who makes the throw to Peterson at first for the first out. The next Enloe batter reaches on an infield error. Wolfe picks up his fourth strike out of the game for the second out of the inning. First base man Peterson rushes deep into foul territory near the fence to make the catch of a foul pop up for the final out of the inning. Sanderson heads to the top of the fifth with a 4-1 lead. With one out the Spartans Kyle Wood hits a double for his first hit of the afternoon. Wigmore is able to bring in a sliding Wood for the score on his single up the middle. Peterson’s second single of the day moves Wigmore to third. We would load the bases with two outs after Wolfe (pinch runner Beavans) reaches on a walk. We are unable to push across any additional runs so it remains SHS 5 Enloe 1 after 5.5 innings. Enloe’s DH starts off the bottom of the fifth inning when he gets on base by a hit pitch for the second time today. Wolfe gets his fifth and sixth strike outs but not before Enloe would get walked batter and a single hitter on base. They would also score two more runs to cut into Sanderson’s lead, now 5-3, as we head to the top of the sixth inning. Brommer leads off Sanderson’s sixth with a full count walk and moves to second base on Trumps second hit of the day. Our next three batters go down in order as we head to the bottom of the sixth inning. Wolfe strikes out the first two Enloe batters to increase his strike out total to eight for the game. The next two batters get a single each, at which time Spartan Head Coach Laughlin brings in Brommer from third base as the new Sanderson pitcher. Brommer gets his first batter to strike out in three straight strikes so we head to the final inning with Sanderson clinging to a 5-3 lead. It is a good sign when your lead off batter reaches base but it is even better if he reaches on an error. Peterson is our batter who reached base on the Enloe error. Pinch hitter Seth Elderkin does his job by helping the team with his well timed two run home run on a 3-2 count. That was all we did in the inning but 7-3 lead is a whole lot better than a 5-3 lead when you are playing at Enloe and headed to the bottom of the seventh inning. The Eagles lead off batter places a scare in the Sanderson faithful with his double up the middle. Brommer then gets order restored with his second strikeout for the first out. Out two occurred when first baseman Wolfe caught a grounder and tossed to Brommer covering first. For the final out it was Brommer’s turn to catch a ground ball and he tossed to Wolfe at first for the final out of the game. Final score Sanderson 7 Enloe 3 Records – Sanderson overall is 11-4 and 4-2 in CAP 7 play Enloe is 5-7 overall and 2-4 in CAP 7 play For Enloe their leading hitter was Bula ( 2-3). He was followed by Robinson (1-3, HR), Gellatly (1-1), Vozzo (1-1), C. Christopoulas (1-3) and Maurer (1-4). Enloe starting pitcher Maurer pitched 4 2/3 inning and took the loss. Sanderson got contributions from seven batters in getting their ten hits. Max Gagnon (2-4, HR, 3 RBI, run), Travis Trumps (2-3,) and Mark Peterson (2-4, run) led the way with two hits each. Contributing one hit each were Seth Elderkin (1-1, HR, 2 RBI’s, run), Charles Wolfe (1-4, 2B, RBI, run), Kyle Wood (1-4, 2B, run) and Kyle Wigmore (1-4, RBI, 2 runs). Sanderson starting pitcher Charles Wolfe picked up his fourth win of the year (4-1). Charles pitched 5 2/3 innings, striking out eight batters and had two walks. He allowed six hits and three runs. Eric Brommer pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, striking out two batters and allowed one hit with no runs scored.
Sunday, April 20 Spartans start slow and fall to Broughton 4-1 on 4.15.08
Sanderson’s baseball team played a home game for the first in three weeks on 4.15.08 when they hosted CAP 7 rival, the Broughton Caps. Sanderson was able to shut the Caps down over the final five innings after giving up four runs in the first two innings. It was not enough as Sanderson fell to Broughton 4-1.
In their first at bat Broughton collected two hits and scored one run to take an early 1-0 lead. Sanderson starting pitcher Mark Peterson started the game by striking out the Caps lead off batter. Later on SS Kyle Wigmore played a ground ball safely with his throw to first baseman Charles Wolfe for the second out. The third out was made when Wolfe made an awesome stop of a ground ball that hugged the first base line and he then made the toss to Peterson covering. In our turn at bat our lead off batter Eric Brommer reached on an infield error and Peterson (pinch runner Seth Elderkin) was intentionally walked before the inning is over. After one inning it remains 1-0 in favor of the Caps.
Broughton’s batters were able to get four more hits off Spartans starting pitcher Peterson with some well placed hits in the field to add three more runs and increase their lead to 4-0. Peterson was able to get all three outs this inning with three strikeouts giving him four for the game. Sanderson can only answer with a single by left fielder Elliot Brody. After two innings it is now 4-0 Caps.
In the Caps third Peterson picked up his fifth strike out of the game and later picked off a runner at first base for a second out. 2B Robert Brunson made the throw to Wolfe at first for the final out. CF Kyle Wood gets a single up the middle and is moved to second when Peterson (pinch runner Elderkin) is intentionally walked for the second time today. The inning ends with runners on first and second.
The Caps come to bat in the top of the fourth inning and go down in order. Peterson strikes out the lead off batter, third baseman 3B Brommer makes a play with his throw to Wolfe at first and Wolfe catches a pop up for the final out. Sanderson’s batters did not get a hit in the third inning but catcher Max Gagnon (pinch runner Sam Beavans), our lead off batter, reached on an infield error and was stranded on third base.
In their top of the fifth inning Broughton’s batters go down in order once again. SS Wigmore and second baseman Brunson fielded ground balls and made their throws to first for two outs and Spartan pitcher Peterson gets another strike out to end the inning. The only base runner that Sanderson gets in the fifth is a two out walk to Wigmore. After five innings it remains 4-0 Broughton.
The Caps lead off batter in the sixth inning hits a fly ball for an out to RF Travis Trumps before Spartan pitcher Peterson gets two more strikeouts giving him nine for the game. In our at bat, lead off batter Wolfe is walked and is moved to second base on Gagnon’s single (pinch runner Beavans). Trumps gets on base with his bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Wolfe would later score on a pass ball to get us our first run of the game. The inning ends when our next three batters strike out. We head to the top of the seventh inning trailing 4-1.
Sanderson brings in Bryan Burke to take over for Peterson on the mound to start the seventh inning. Broughton’s lead off batter reached base with a single, their first hit since the second inning. Second baseman Brunson got the first out with his catch and throw to first base and Burke threw our tenth strikeout of the game for the second out. First baseman Wolfe fields a ground ball and places his foot on the bag for the final out.
We start off the bottom of the seventh inning with two straight strikeouts. Peterson then got his first true walk of the game and Wolfe placed a single to right field that moves Peterson to third base. That was all we could do as the Spartans fall short in this CAP 7 conference game.
Final score Broughton 4 Sanderson 1
Broughton starting pitcher Buckley pitched four innings in picking up the win. D. Brown came in and pitched the final three innings in getting the save.
The Caps hitters were led by D. Brown (2-4, dbl, run) and J. Redd (2-4, RBI). Adding one hit each were C. Devlin (1-2, DBL W, run), J. Kline (1-3 run, RBI), and J. Vick (1-3).
Spartans staring pitcher Mark Peterson (2-2) pitched six innings and allowed four runs, struck out nine batters (38 for the year) and walked two batters. After the second inning Peterson did not allow any runs, only one batter got past first base, he struck out six batters and walked two. Bryan Burke came in and pitched the seventh inning (1K, 1 hit, no runs).
The Spartans five hits were shared by five hitters. Charles Wolfe (1-3, W, run), Travis Trumps (1-3), Elliott Brody (1-3), Kyle Wood (1-4, DBL) and Max Gagnon (1-4).

Spartans Spirit Night game results in dramatic seventh inning CAP 7 win over Wakefield
At the Third Annual Spartan Spirit Night, the Sanderson Spartans students did not leave until the game was decided in the bottom of the seventh inning. The students were standing and cheering on their baseball team as it fought back from a 3-0 deficit. In the bottom of the seventh inning and the bases loaded, no outs and the scored all knotted up at 3-3, Kyle Wigmore delivered a 2-2 pitch over the Wolverines left fielders head to plate Alex Baldy for the 4-3 win. Wigmore was given a second chance when his foul pop fly was dropped by the Wolverines. Baldy had started off the inning when he was struck by the first pitch to start the inning. Baldy was followed by Eric Brommer, who advanced Baldy to second when the Wolverines infield committed an error. Kyle Wood was intentionally placed on first to load the bases and set up Wigmore’s game winning hit.
Charles Wolfe started on the mound for the home team Spartans as the stands started to fill with Sanderson students who turned out for the Annual Spartan Spirit Night game. The students saw Wolfe put down the Wolverines with no runs allowed in the first inning. The lead off batter reached on an error. Third baseman Brommer then fielded the next batters ground ball, made the throw to SS Wigmore for the force out at 2nd base. Wigmore then completed the double play with his throw to Mark Peterson at first. Brommer leads off our half of the first with a single but that was all we could muster. In between innings Sanderson’s students stayed in their seats waiting to hear their name called in the raffle for free prizes while also enjoying their complimentary hot dog, chip and drink during the game. All of this is made possible during our annual Spartan Spirit Night which is sponsored by the Spartan Diamond Club. In Wakefield’s top of the second inning, their lead off batter reached base on a single. We get the first out when pitcher Wolfe catches a fly ball. Second baseman Robert Brunson starts our second double play in two innings when he caught a line drive for the second out and quickly threw to Peterson at first to double up that runner. Sanderson has its own 1-2-3 inning so we head to the top of the third inning all tied up at 0-0. For the third straight inning Wakefield’s lead off batter reaches base, with a single to right field. Their next batter flies out to Sanderson pitcher Wolfe for the first out. The next batter reaches base on a Spartan error but we get the second out on the next batter that flies out to RF Travis Trumps. With two outs and the bases loaded, a double is hit to left center that clears the bases. After 3.5 innings Wakefield scores first to take a 3-0 lead. The ever growing number of Sanderson students in the stands cheer on their Spartans to answer. Left fielder Elliot Brody is our lead off batter and he reaches first on a full count walk. Brunson lays down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to first base, moving Brody to second. Brommer gets our first hit of the inning with his single to left field. With one out we have runners on the corners. Center fielder Wood comes to the plate and delivers a shot to right field that resulted in a triple and brings in Brody and Brommer. That is how we answer. After three innings the Spartans cut into the Wolverines lead, 3-2, and the SHS students sense that something exciting is happening. In their top of the fourth inning, the Wolverines first batter grounded out to SS Wigmore and he was followed by a strike out thrown by Wolfe for his first strikeout of the game. The next batter walks and he is followed by a grounder hit to the first base area that leaves runners on first and second. Wolfe then pulls the string and gets his second strike out of the inning to end the Wolverines threat. Sanderson first base runner in the bottom of the fourth was catcher Max Gagnon (pinch runner Seth Elderkin), who reached base on a Wakefield fielding error. Trumps hit a single to right field that moves Elderkin to third base. Brody becomes our third base runner of the inning when he was walked, but not before Elderkin was tagged out in a pickle between home and third base. At the same time Trumps moved to third base. Trumps later scored the tying run on a pass ball. The crowd is cranked up at this time as we have a new ball game, all tied up at 3-3 after four innings. Wakefield is batting at the top of their order and all they could muster was a runner who reached base on an error. Wolfe fielded a ground ball and made the throw to Peterson at first for the first out. Brommer caught a grounder at third and made a successful throw to first as well for the second out. The final out came via Wolfe’s third strikeout in the past two innings. Brommer leads off Sanderson’s bottom of the fifth with his third hit of the game, a double to center field. Wakefield turned its first double play of the evening when a ground ball was hit to the pitcher, who threw to third base to get Brommer out in a run down and then a throw was made to first base to get the batter out in another pickle, this time between first and second base. After all that Wigmore reached base with a walk and the inning will end with Wigmore on first. After five innings it remains 3-3. Spartan pitcher Wolfe seems to be in a groove as the game progresses as he gets the Wakefield batters out in order with none of the balls leaving the infield. The first out was a grounder played by Peterson at first. Wolfe was involved in out number two when he caught a roller and threw to Peterson. Brommer then made the final out with his throw of a ground ball to first. A great defensive inning but our offense can not help out as we are only able to get one runner on base, Trumps second hit of the night. We now head to the seventh inning knowing that last year we played games that lasted 16 and 11 innings against each other. Will this be another extra inning game? Wakefield’s first batter hit a line drive to Wood in center field for out number one. Brommer make another routine throw from third to first for the second out. The Wolverines batter would then get Wakefield’s first hit in four innings with a single to right field. The following batter hit a slow grounder to Wolfe who makes a good throw to Peterson at first for the final out. Now the table is set for the exciting finish. In the seventh inning we all heard the well known Sanderson students chant of “SAN DER SON” “Sanderson!” “SAN DER SON” “Sanderson!” After the winning run was scored I had a Sanderson student approach me and asked if the students could storm the field! I think our students got into the game. Final score Sanderson 4 Wakefield 3 Records Sanderson 12-5 CAP 7 5-3 Wakefield 10-5 CAP 7 3-4 Wolverines pitcher B. Yeung pitched a complete game in taking the loss. Wakefield’s five hits came from five different hitters; B. Yeung (1-3, DBL, 3 RBI’s), B. Hursey (1-2, W, run), J. Dowdy (1-2), J. Woodle (1-3), C. Brown (1-4). Spartan pitcher Charles Wolfe pitched his fourth complete game and improved his record to 5-1 in gaining the win. Wolfe had 3K’s (48 year to date), 2 BB’s, and allowed three runs on five hits. Sanderson’s batters only knocked out seven hits but made the most of them. Eric Brommer led the way (3-4, DBL, run) followed by Travis Trumps (2-3, run). Kyle Wigmore (1-3, W, RBI) and Kyle Wood (1-4, triple, 2 RBI’s) contributed with one hit each. Tuesday, April 29 Spartans defense and pitching is solid in 2-0 CAP 7 win over Millbrook
With a large turnout of Spartans students cheering on their baseball team at Millbrook on 4.25.2008, the Spartans moved into sole possession of second place in the CAP 7 with a 2-0 win over the Wildcats. Sanderson is a half game behind league leader Leesville, who has played one more CAP 7 game than Sanderson.
In what has turned into an expected defensive game between the two teams this season, Sanderson swept the two game series by a combine score of 3-0. Sanderson won the first game 1-0 behind pitcher Mark Peterson on 4.10.2008.
In the Spartans first at bat SS Kyle Wigmore became our first base runner when he reached on an infield error. First baseman Mark Peterson followed Wigmore with a walk and then came our third out. The Wildcats lead off batter reached first base on a questionable safe call by the field umpire. That was followed by a ground ball out made by Peterson at first and a ground ball out thrown by SS Wigmore to Peterson. Junior starting pitcher Charles Wolfe got the last out with his first strike out of the game. After one inning it is 0-0.
In our part of the second inning Millbrook pitcher Smith got two strikeouts to increase his total to four for the game and he then made a fielding play of a ground ball with his throw to first for the final out. Millbrook’s lead off batter hit a grounder to SS Wigmore who then made the throw to Peterson at first for an out. The second batter reached on an infield single. Spartan second baseman Robert Brunson laid out to stop an extra base hit and was still able to make the throw to Wigmore who was covering second for the force out. Wolfe got his second strike out to end the inning. After two innings we remain in a scoreless game.
Brunson led off Sanderson’s third with a hard ball that struck and bounced off of Wildcat pitcher Travis Smith’s shoulder and head for our first hit of the game. A scary few minutes followed and fortunately Smith was able to stay in the game without any obvious injury. The next two batters were outs one and two so we have Brunson stranded on first. Wigmore then delivered our second hit when he landed a single to right field advancing Brunson as well. Knowing they go on any hit ball, Brunson and Wigmore took off after Peterson hit a single for our third hit of the inning, scoring both runners. After 2.5 innings, Sanderson takes a lead of 2-0. In their half of the third, the Wildcats lead off batter reached base on a single and was thrown out at first base on the very next pitch when Spartan catcher Max Gagnon threw down to Peterson at first base, who then placed the tag on the sliding runner. Gagnon then caught a pop fly for the second out. Brunson fielded his second ground ball and got out number three with his throw to first. After three full innings Sanderson leads 2-0.
Gagnon (pinch runner Seth Elderkin) leads off our fourth inning with his first hit of the game. We can not do anything else the rest of the inning as Millbrook comes to bat in the bottom of the fourth. With two ground ball plays for outs to Peterson at first and third baseman Eric Brommer, and Wolfe getting his third strikeout of the game, we head to the top of the fifth inning with a 2-0 lead.
The Spartans can not add to their 2-0 lead as they go down in order in the fifth inning. Millbrook threatened in their fifth when their lead off batter reached on an error. Their next batter hit a single into the outfield while at the same time their lead base runner tried to reach home. Our dependable CF Kyle Wood charges the rolling baseball and made a perfect throw to his cut off man, SS Wigmore, who alertly makes the throw to third baseman Brommer as the base runner had just passed third. Instead of getting caught in a pickle between third and home, the runner takes off for home. Brommer makes the throw to catcher Gagnon who in position to get the runner out at the plate. As the throw arrives in Gagnon’s glove the runner runs into Gagnon who holds onto the ball for the first out of the inning! The next batter hits a grounder to Brommer at third, who checks the runner at second, and he then made a successful throw across the field to Peterson at first. The last batter hits a fly ball, the first fly ball to the outfield by a Millbrook batter so far, to Wood in center field for the final out. After five complete innings Sanderson holds onto its slim 2-0 lead.
With the first two batters getting out, Wolfe delivers his single to left field for his first hit of the game in the sixth inning. Gagnon followed with a full count walk and the right fielder Travis Trumps reached base after he was hit by a pitch. We now have the bases loaded and two outs but we could not add to our lead. The Wildcats lead off batter reached after he was hit by a pitch but was out on the next play when the second Wildcats batter hit into a double play. SS Wigmore threw to Brunson at second who then threw to Peterson at first. Looked like a routine play. Pitcher Wolfe got the final out on a ground ball as we head to the top of the seventh with a 2-0 lead.
With one out Brommer reaches bases after being struck by a pitch. Our next two batters are the final two outs of the inning so we now head to the bottom of the seventh. The Wildcats lead off batter for the inning is their starting pitcher Travis Smith who places a scare into the Sanderson faithful with his towering hit to center field but center fielder Kyle Wood safety tucks the ball into his glove at the warning path. The second out was on a ground ball hit to SS Wigmore and the final out was an infield pop fly to 3B Brommer.
Final score Sanderson 2 Millbrook 0

Saturday, May 3 Spartans move into first place in CAP 7 with win over Leesville
With senior pitcher Mark Peterson leading the way with nine strike outs and catcher Max Gagnon’s three run home run and five RBI’s, Sanderson moved into sole possession of first place in the CAP 7 conference with a 6-3 win over the Leesville Pride on April 30, 2008.
As the visitors Sanderson batted first and center fielder Kyle Wood is our first base runner when he reached on a single which was our only hit of the inning. Leesville’s lead off batter reached base as a hit batter, followed by two singles to score their first run. The first two outs occurred when SS Kyle Wigmore started a double play with his throw to second baseman Robert Brunson, who threw to first baseman Charles Wolfe. Wood then caught a pop fly for the final out. Leesville takes an early 1-0 lead after one inning.
In Sanderson’s second at bat we again can only muster one hit as Wolfe gets a single up the middle. Peterson seems to be getting into his groove as he pitches in the second inning. Wigmore plays a ground ball at short for the first out. Peterson strikes out his first two batters for the other outs in the inning. Leesville did get a single as we head to the top of the third inning, 1-0 Leesville.
The Spartans once again can only get one hit for the third consecutive inning when third baseman Eric Brommer placed his single to right field. Peterson gets his third and fourth strike outs in the third inning after Wolfe caught a line drive hit to first for the first out. The score remains 1-0 Leesville as we had to the fourth inning.
With one out Sanderson’s hitters start to see the ball better while getting three hits in the fourth inning. Peterson got our first hit with a single to left, which was followed by Wolfe doing the same. On an 0-2 count Gagnon sent a fastball way over the left field trees to Leesville Road for his fourth home run of the year, giving Sanderson a 3-1 lead. Right fielder Travis Trumps followed and was hit by a pitch and got as far as third base. Left fielder Elliot Brody hit a single up the middle and eventually got to second base. After 3.5 innings Sanderson has taken a 3-1 lead. With a lead to work with Spartans pitcher Peterson is now settling in on the mound. In throwing only eight pitches Peterson gets a fly ball hit to right field where Trumps gets the ball for the first out. A strike out victim is Peterson’s fifth of the game. The final out was a ground ball hit to Brunson at second who makes the throw to Wolfe at first. After three innings Sanderson maintains its 3-1 lead.
Brommer led off our fourth inning with his second hit of the game, a single. He is followed by Wood who reached on a walk. Wigmore then laid down a picture perfect sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to the next base. Peterson (pinch runner Sam Beavans) helps his own cause with a single to the right side of the field that loads the bases with one out. Wolfe hits into a fielders choice and plates Brommer and moves Wood over to third and Peterson to second. Gagnon (pinch runner Bryan Burke) then gets his second hit of the game, a single up the middle, bringing in both Wood and Beavans. We end the inning with Sanderson increasing its lead to 6-1 and the Sanderson students in attendance are getting louder.
Leesville’s at bat in the bottom of the fifth produced one base runner, a walk to the lead off batter. Peterson then strikes two batters back to back for his sixth and seventh strike out victims of the game. SS Wigmore then fielded another ground ball for an out with his throw to Wolfe at first base. After five complete innings the Spartans maintain their 6-1 lead.
In Sanderson’s sixth Brommer gets our only hit, a well hit double to right field. Without scoring another run Leesville come to bat with the sounds of a beating drum in center field sounding like a rally call. It must have worked as Leesville scored two runs off two Sanderson fielding errors, all with two outs and nobody on base, to cut into the Spartans lead of 6-3. Their lead off batter hit a grounder that was fielded by Wolfe at first, who then tossed to Peterson covering. The next batter was struck out by Peterson, his eighth of the game, as the table is set for Leesville to score two unearned runs on two errors and two hits. Sanderson got the final out when Wolfe fielded a ground ball at first base. As we head to the top of the seventh inning Sanderson now leads 6-3.
Sanderson’s only base runner in the seventh inning was when Wolfe reached on a Leesville infield error. Here we go to the bottom of the seventh knowing that the winner is in first place in the CAP 7 heading into the final few days of the regular season.
Senior pitcher Peterson takes the mound with an atmosphere that was reminiscent of our playoff game last year at Pinecrest when Peterson pitched us to a 1-0 upset win in the second round of the state playoffs. So much is on the line. The Pride’s lead off batter hit a harmless grounder to Brommer at third and he made the throw to first. The next batter has the Sanderson faithful holding their breath as he hits a towering ball to deep center field but Wood ends up making another routine catch for the second out. On a 2-2 count Peterson brought the heat and gets his ninth strike out of the game to preserve the win.
Final score Sanderson 6 Leesville 3
Records Sanderson CAP 7 7-3 Overall 14-5 Leesville CAP 7 7-4 Overall 13-7
Sanderson took over first place in the CAP 7 for the first time since the 1990’s. There is still plenty of work to do if the team is to accomplish their team goals that were set before the season. There is plenty of baseball left to play.
Leesville had five batters with one hit each – T. Gentry (1-4), B. Dorsett (1-3, ), R. Stelton (1-3), A. Foreman (1-2), and K. Saxton (1-3).
Leesville pitching – starting pitcher G. Kirk pitched 3.33 innings in taking the loss. He had 2 K’s, 1 W, with seven hits and allowed three runs. B. Dorsett pitched 3.67 innings, struck out 4 batters, allowed four hits and three runs.
Sanderson – starting pitcher Mark Peterson (3-2) pitched his third CG of the year. Mark displayed control tonight as he had nine strike outs with only two walks. He scattered five hits over seven innings.
Sanderson batters – six hitters contributed to the eleven hit attack. Eric Brommer had a nice three hit night (3-4, 2B, run). Max Gagnon had a productive night (2-4, HR, five RBI’s, run) and he was followed by Mark Peterson (2-4, 2 runs) and Charles Wolfe (2-4, RBI, run). Kyle Wood (1-3, W, run) and Elliot Brody (1-3) also made timely contributions.
Spartans win CAP 7 for first time since 1992
After the Eagles of Enloe had loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth inning, Sanderson reliever Eric Brommer struck out three straight batters to end the threat. Then Sanderson scored three runs in their bottom of the sixth inning to secure a thrilling come from behind 3-1 win and were crowned the 2008 CAP 7 champions. On Senior Night senior Mark Peterson took the mound for the Spartans. In the first inning center fielder Kyle Wood caught a fly ball for the first out and first baseman Charles Wolfe got a grounder for the second out. After Enloe got their first hit of the game Peterson tossed a ground ball to Wolfe at first for the final out. Sanderson’s batters go down in order so we head to the second inning scoreless. Pitcher Peterson takes over the game in the second inning with his three strike outs. The Spartans got their first base runner of the evening when Peterson stroked a single up the middle and that is it for the inning. We head to the third inning in a pitchers dual. The Eagles lead off batter reached on an error but is quickly put out when Spartans catcher Max Gagnon throws down to Wolfe who places the tag on the runner. Enloe got their second base runner on a walk who later scored on a double. Enloe also had a second walked batter who was picked off by pitcher Peterson with his throw to first base for the second out. In the defensive play of the game, Spartan pitcher Peterson made a throw to first baseman Wolfe with an Enloe runner also on third. The runner at third was thrown out at home in a 1-3-6-3-2 play (pitcher Peterson threw to Wolfe who threw to SS Kyle Wigmore who threw back to Wolfe to keep the runner in a pickle between first and second. Then the runner on third took off for home and Wolfe threw to Gagnon who placed the tag on the runner while covering home for the third out)!! Enloe now has a 1-0 lead as Sanderson comes to bat in the bottom of the third inning. Brommer got our only hit of the third inning, a single, but that was all we could muster as we head to the top of the fourth inning. The fourth inning started well for your Spartans as SS Wigmore not only stopped an extra base hit with his dive to his left but he was laid out to stop the grounder. Wigmore then got up and made the throw to Wolfe at first for the first out. Peterson would then get his fourth strikeout and left fielder Elliot Brody was at the fence to catch a fly ball for the final out. Sanderson’s batters go down 1-2-3 once again as we head to the top of the fifth inning still trailing 1-0. In Enloe’s fifth they would get two walked batters but would not score. Peterson registered his fifth strikeout of the game for the first out. Second baseman Robert Brunson made the throw to first on a ground ball for the second out. Wolfe at first then had a ground ball hit to him for the unassisted out at first. Sanderson’s lead off batter Gagnon hit a single up the middle for our only hit of the inning. Brody also reached base on an error and Gagnon was stranded on third base. After five full innings we still find ourselves on the short end of a 1-0 game. Peterson struggled in the sixth inning by hitting two batters and walking another. With the bases loaded and no outs Brommer is brought in and Peterson is moved to third base. Brommer then proceeded to strike out three straight batters and the Spartans dodged a huge bullet as they come to bat in the bottom of the sixth inning still down a run but with more emotion. We were given a good sign when our lead off batter, Wood hustled to first and reached base on an infield error. Wigmore then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Wood over to second. Peterson stepped to the plate and delivered a double to right field to plate Wood with the tying run. With two outs and Peterson still on second Gagnon delivered a blast to right center field that a lot of us thought was out of the park to bring in Peterson for what turned out to be the game winning hit and run. Gagnon (pinch runner Sam Beavans) would also score when Travis Trumps reached base on an error. After six complete innings Sanderson has now taken a 3-1 lead into the top of the seventh and are only three outs away from a CAP 7 baseball conference championship, which would be their first since 1992. Spartan pitcher Brommer, with the Sanderson students now making themselves heard, struck out the lead off batter. Out number two occurred when second baseman Brunson fielded a ground ball and made the throw to Wolfe at first. On a 3-2 count and the Sanderson faithful clapping and on their feet, the Enloe batter hit a ground ball to Brunson at second, who then made the throw to Wolfe at first. Game over. Sanderson is the CAP 7 Conference champions for the first time since 1992. Final score Sanderson 3 Enloe 1 Records Sanderson CAP 7 8-4 15-6 Enloe CAP 7 2-10 5-17 Enloe pitcher M. Jurek – pitched a very good CG (4 K’s, -0- W, 5 hits and 3 runs). Enloe batters – C. Christopoulos (1-1, 2 W), R, Mauer (1-3, RBI, W), and D. Bula (1-4). Sanderson pitching – combined our two pitchers only allowed three hits. Starter Mark Peterson had 5 IP (4 W, 5 K’s, 1 run) for a no decision. Reliever Eric Brommer (1-0) pitched 2 innings (4K’s, -0- W’s) for the win. Spartans batters – only had five hit but they made the most of it. With two hits each was Max Gagnon (2-3, triple, run, RBI) and Mark Peterson (2-3, double, run, RBI). Our other hit came from Eric Brommer (1-3). Congratulations to the CAP 7 Conference Champions and good luck as you play in the NCHSAA State 4A baseball playoffs as a #1 seed. Wednesday, February 27
SANDERSON SENIORS
Spartans advance to second round of state playoffs
Playing on their home field in a NC State 4A playoff game for the first time since 1992, the Spartans started their 2008 playoff appearance with a 2-1 win over the Garner Trojans on May 9, 2008. Sanderson starting pitcher Charles Wolfe gained his fifth straight win (7-1) as he kept the Trojans off balance all night as he scattered three hits over seven innings and did not allow any earned runs. In the Trojans first inning Spartans second baseman Robert Brunson made a successful play of a ground ball with his throw to Mark Peterson at first base. SS Kyle Wigmore turned a ground ball into a double play with his toss to Brunson at second and then the throw to Peterson at first. A nice way to end the first inning. The Spartans are not able to get any runners on base as they go down 1-2-3. After one inning the score remains scoreless. With the home crowd growing in numbers by the minute, the Trojans come to bat in the second inning. Spartan pitcher Wolfe records his first strikeout of the game when he gets the lead off batter. After a batter is walked right fielder Travis Trumps caught a fly ball for the second out. Then Peterson made an easy play of a ground ball at first for the final out. The bats are not quite going yet for the home team but Wolfe is able to get a walk for our first base runner of the game. After two innings we are caught up in a pitchers dual in a scoreless game. Garner’s lead off batter got their first hit of the game with a single to right field and he is then moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt. The second out of the inning came about when SS Wigmore made a throw to first on a ground ball. Aided by back-to-back infield errors, Garner would get on the scoreboard first. The final out occurred when Wolfe recorded his second strikeout of the game. As Sanderson heads to the bottom of the third they find themselves trailing 1-0. Sanderson’s lead off batter Trumps reached based on four straight balls. Left fielder Elliot Brody’s single to right field moved Trumps to third base with one out. Trumps would score on a pass ball as Brunson is at the plate. With two outs third baseman Eric Brommer delivered his game winning RBI when Brody scored on his ground ball to short. After three full innings the Spartans have taken a 2-1 lead and the home crowd is pleased with the way the Spartans answered the Trojans score. In the defensive play of the game center fielder Kyle Wood dove for a fly ball and made a spectacular catch. If that balls gets through it is easily a double and possibly a triple with no outs. Wolfe then records his third strike out and third baseman Brommer catches a fly ball for the final out. Sanderson’s only base runner is Wolfe’s single to center field. After four innings the score remains 2-1 Sanderson. Wolfe starts off our defensive portion of the fifth inning with his fourth and fifth strike outs. Second baseman Brunson gets the final out when a ground ball is hit to him and he made the throw to Peterson at first. In our half of the inning Brody got his second hit of the game with his single to the infield. That was the highlight of the inning as we head to the sixth with a slim 2-1 lead. Garner’s lead off batter in the sixth inning jumped on the first pitch to get his single into right field. With the second batter still in the batters box Spartan catcher Max Gagnon picked off the runner at first base with his throw Peterson for the first out. The Trojans next batter gets a walk and is stranded on base. The second out was the result of Wolfe’s sixth strike out and Wolfe was also involved in the final out when a ground ball was hit back to him. Spartan center fielder Wood was our first base runner when he received a walk. Wigmore reached base on an infield error and Peterson reached when he was intentionally walked. We are not able to plate any of our base runners so we head to the top of the seventh inning with the lead 2-1. In the top of the seventh inning the Trojans lead off batter reached base on our third error of the game. As this point Spartan pitcher Wolfe bears down and recorded back-to-back strike outs for his seventh and eighth strike out victims. With the home crowd on their feet for the final out, a ground ball was hit to second baseman Brunson who then made the game ending throw to Peterson at first. Final score Sanderson (16-6) 2 Garner 1 For the second consecutive year the Spartans are headed to the second round of the state 4A playoffs. The Spartans will host the Richmond County Raiders on 5.13.2008 at Sanderson Field. Garner pitching -- Z. Howell - CG, 2 runs, 3 hits, 5 K’s, 3W’s. Garner batters - -D. Monahan (1-3), Z. Howell (1-3), A. gulley (1-3 run). Sanderson pitching – Charles Wolfe CG (7-1). Charles had 8 K’s, 2 W’s, and scattered three hits. The only run scored was an unearned run. Sanderson batters – The Spartans leading hitter was Elliot Brody (2-2, run). Charles Wolfe got only other hit (1-3). Travis Trumps (0-1, walk, run) was our other run scorer after he was walked. Saturday, May 24 Spartans rally to advance to the 3rd round of the state playoffs On May 13, 2008, in front of one of the largest home crowds this season, Sanderson trailed 3-0 before the first out was registered. After battling back over the next seven innings Sanderson won 4-3 to advance to the third round (Sweet Sixteen) of the NCHSSA 4A East State Playoffs and will face the PAC 6 C. E. Jordan Falcons (19-7) from Durham this Friday night at Sanderson Field. The Richmond County Raiders struck early and hard by scoring three runs before Sanderson was able to get the first out in the game. With a single and back-to-back home runs, Richmond County led 3-0. Sanderson senior pitcher Mark Peterson then struck out the next three batters. Sanderson was only able to get one hit, a double by SS Kyle Wigmore, as we head to the second inning with the Raiders up 3-0. Richmond County’s lead off batter got their fourth hit of the game but was stranded on base. The next batter laid down a bunt that Peterson fielded and tagged out the batter. Then SS Wigmore fielded two ground balls and got the outs with his throws to Charles Wolfe at first base. The Spartan batters do down 1-2-3 so we head to the third inning still trailing 3-0. For the third consecutive inning the Raiders lead off batter reached base when their batter was struck by a pitch. The first out occurred when center fielder Kyle Wood caught a fly ball. Then catcher Max Gagnon threw down to second baseman Robert Brunson to throw out the base runner trying to steal. Peterson would get his fourth strike out to end the inning. Sanderson can not provide any base runners against the Raiders starting pitcher, J. Watts, and still find themselves trailing 3-0. The Raiders find themselves going down in order as well in the top of the fourth inning. Right fielder Travis Trumps got the first out with his catch of a fly ball and then SS Wigmore made a good throw to first on the ground ball hit his way. Peterson got the last out of the inning with his fifth strikeout of the game. Sanderson’s hitters are now facing the Raiders pitcher for the second time and need to get their bats going as they only have one hit going into the inning. Leadoff batter Wood reached first on a Richmond error and moved to second on Wigmore’s second hit of the game to center field. Peterson (pinch runner Seth Elderkin) then loaded the bases with no outs when he reached on a walk. Then Wood would score on a pass ball to give us our first run of the game. Gagnon then hit a game tying two run single into left field to plate Wigmore and Elderkin. As we head to the top of fifth inning Sanderson has fought back from their early 3-0 deficit and appear to have all the momentum. The home field crowd is getting louder by the inning. The Raiders first batter is out with a fly ball hit to right fielder Trumps. After a batter gets a left field single, Peterson records back-to-back strike outs to increase his game total to seven. Sanderson’s bats go hitless in their half of the fifth so we remain tied at 3-3 heading into the sixth inning. Spartan pitcher Peterson has settled in nicely as he records his eighth and ninth strikeouts of the game to start the inning. Peterson would later get a third strikeout in the inning and the score remains 3-3. For the second inning in the game our lead off batter, Wigmore reached base on an infield error. This was a rather costly error as Wigmore actually reached second base. Peterson then helped his own cause with an RBI single to center field that plated Wigmore and gave the Spartans their first lead of the game, 4-3. Wolfe would get a double to left field and left fielder Elliot Brody singled to the left side of the field but we are not able to score any more runs so we head to the seventh inning. After walking the lead off Raider batter, Peterson is replaced on the hill by third baseman Eric Brommer. Actually Peterson and Brommer simply trade positions at this time. Brommer is greeted with a single before his gets the first out of the inning with a strike out. Richmond County now has runners on second and third and one out, only down by a run. Facing the Raiders clean up batter, Brommer gets him to hit a line drive to Brunson at second base and Brunson then threw to Wolfe at first to double up the runner at first to end the game. What an exciting way to end a playoff game in front of your fans with a double play and the tying run only 90’ away. With the win Sanderson advances to the third round of the state playoffs for the second year in a row. Richmond County ended its season at 20-6 and Sanderson improved to 17-6. Richmond batters – B. Franklin (3-4 run), W. Shuler (1-1, HR, RBI, run), and C. Ayers (1-4, HR, RBI, run). Richmond pitchers – J. Watts 5 IP, 3 K’s, 1 W, 4 hits and 4 runs. Reliever J. LoCascio 1 IP, 1 K. Sanderson pitching – starter Mark Peterson (4-2) settled in after the first three Raider batters scored three runs and had 3 hits. After this point Mark did not allow any runs and there were only 2 more hits over the next 24 batters, while Mark was striking out 10 of these 24 batters. That gets Mark up to 62 strikeouts for the year. Reliever Eric Brommer pitched one inning, struck out one batter and did not allow any runs in earning the save. Sanderson batters – Kyle Wigmore (2-3, dbl, 2 runs) led the way. Contributing one hit each were Charles Wolfe (1-2, W), Max Gagnon (1-3, 2 RBI), Mark Peterson (1-2, RBI, run), and Elliot Brody (1-3). We’ll see you at the field Friday night. GO SPARTANS! Saturday, May 24 Spartans win District and advance to Sectionals in NCHSSA 4A East playoffs In a game postponed one day due to rain Sanderson faced off against Durham Jordan at Sanderson Field for the District Championship. In front of an overflow crowd on a beautiful Saturday night on May 17, 2008, Sanderson played its trademark defensive game in a 3-0 win and now advances to the Sectional round facing the Wilmington Hoggard Vikings (21-4) in the Final Four of the NCHSSA 4A East. After listening to Sanderson junior Laura Brown sing the national anthem, Spartan junior pitcher Charles Wolfe started the game with a backward strike out of the Jordan leadoff batter. The second out was on a routine ground ball to SS Kyle Wigmore who then made the throw to Mark Peterson at first base. Charles got another strikeout for the final out of the inning. Sanderson comes to bat but we go down 1-2-3. After one inning we are scoreless. Jordan’s lead off batter reached base on an error but is out on a fielder’s choice when third baseman Eric Brommer played a ground ball and threw to second baseman Robert Brunson covering second. After Wolfe properly played a sacrifice bunt with his throw to Peterson at first, Brommer got his second put out of the inning with his throw to first base. In Sanderson’s half of the inning, catcher Max Gagnon’s single (Pinch runner Seth Elderkin) to right center field was our first hit of the game. That is it for the second inning so we head to the third still scoreless. Spartan pitcher Wolfe recorded his third strikeout of the game to start the third inning. SS Wigmore made another routine play with his play on a ground ball and throw to Peterson at first for the second out. On a fielders choice SS Wigmore threw to Brunson covering second for the force and final out. Left fielder Elliot Brody started off our third inning with his single to right field. Brunson got his first hit of the game when he also hit to right field, which was followed by Brommer reaching base after getting hit by a pitch. Center fielder Kyle Wood loaded the bases when he was also hit by a pitch. With one out Wigmore delivered a two RBI single to left field, scoring both Brunson and Brommer. After three innings Sanderson got on the board first and leads 2-0 headed to the fourth inning. The Sanderson students in the stands are being heard loud and clear and they like what they see on the field. Spartan second baseman Brunson got the first out of the fourth inning when he made his throw to first on a ground ball. After the next Falcon batter reached on a single, pitcher Wolfe picked him off with Peterson placing the tag on the runner. Brommer again made a good play at third when he threw out the runner at first after fielding a ground ball. In our half of the fourth we go down 1-2-3 so we head to the fifth inning maintaining a 2-0 lead. After Jordan’s lead off batter reached base with a single, Wolfe would record his fourth strikeout of the game. Spartan catcher Gagnon then caught a pop fly along the first base line for the second out. Third baseman Brommer got in the act and caught his own fly ball for the final out. Offensively Brommer was our first base runner in the fifth hitting when he was hit by a pitch for the second time tonight. Wood reached base on a fielder’s choice and Wigmore got his second hit of the game. That is all for the fifth inning so we head to the top of the sixth inning facing the top of the order for Jordan with a slim 2-0 lead. Spartan pitcher Wolfe gets the lead off batter to hit a harmless ground ball to Peterson at first for the first out. Brunson at second made another routine play on a ground ball with his throw to first for the second out. After issuing his first walk of the game Wolfe struck out the next batter for the final out of the inning. In our bottom of the sixth inning Gagnon received a walk for our first base runner. Trump’s well placed bunt into the Falcon infield was good for a single and advanced Gagnon to second with one out. Brody got his second hit of the game with his RBI single up the middle, plating Gagnon coming in from second base. The inning ends with the Spartans increasing their lead to 3-0 as we are now ended to the top of the seventh inning. The Falcon’s lead off batter grounded out to SS Wigmore in the defensive play of the game for the first out. Wigmore dove to his side, was laid out on the ground and was still able to get up and make the throw to first for the out. After giving up a single, Wolfe then got the last Falcon batter to hit into a game ending double play. The ball was hit to SS Wigmore who tossed to Brunson covering second. Brunson finished off the double lay with his throw to Peterson at first. GAME OVER!!! Sanderson wins 3-0. Your Sanderson Spartans are DISTRICT CHAMPIONS for the first time since 1992. Records -- Sanderson (18-6) and Jordan (19-8). Jordan pitching -- starter Z. Bernard (4 K, 2W, 3 runs) pitched 5 2/3 inning in taking a tough loss. Reliever N. Jones pitched the final 2/3 inning. Jordan batters – DH M. Frances (2-2) led the way followed by RF DJ Elliker (1-3) and catcher S. Sundseth (1-3). Charles has now reached 64 strikeouts for the year as well as winning his sixth straight decision. Sanderson batters – leading the attack were SS Kyle Wigmore (2-3, 2RBI) and left fielder Elliot Brody (2-3, RBI). Catcher Max Gagnon (1-2, W, run), second baseman Robert Brunson (1-2 run) and right fielder Travis Trumps (1-3) closed out our hitting numbers. Wednesday, October 8 Sanderson defeats Wilmington Hoggard to advance to the NCHSAA 4A East Championship bracket In front of a standing room only crowd the Sanderson Spartans defeated the Wilmington Hoggard Vikings 2-0 on May 21, 2008 at Sanderson Field. In doing so Sanderson is the sole CAP 7 Conference baseball team still playing in the state playoffs. The Spartans now face Greenville Rose in a best of three series for the right to represent the East when they play the 4A West team for the State 4A Championship. Senior pitcher Mark Peterson started on the mound for the Spartans and he got the Vikings lead off batter to hit a grounder to Charles Wolfe at first base for the first out. After striking out the next batter Peterson then hit a batter for the Vikings first baserunner of the game. Third baseman Eric Brommer then cleanly fielded a grounder and threw to Wolfe at first for the last out. Center fielder Kyle Wood got our only hit in the bottom of the first so we head to the second inning scoreless. In the Vikings second Peterson struck out two batters for two outs in the inning. In between strike outs a batter did reach base with a single. After a lazy pick off throw to first, Peterson immediately threw back again to Wolfe at first who placed the tag on the base runner for a pick off. Sanderson would go down in order so we remain scoreless as we head to the third inning. The lead off Viking batter is a victim of Peterson’s fourth strike out of the game. Second baseman Robert Brunson then fielded a ground ball and made the throw to first for the second out. After a Viking batter hit for a double Peterson got his second strike out victim of the inning to end the inning. Brunson would get Sanderson’s only hit of the inning but was later picked off trying to steal second. That was all for the inning heading to the top of the fourth inning still 0-0. Wilmington’s batters would go down 1-2-3 in the fourth inning. A ground ball hit to Brunson at second and another ground ball hit to shortstop Kyle Wigmore resulted in easy throws to Wolfe at first base for outs. Peterson ended the inning with another strike out victim. Wigmore would get our only hit of the inning and he was stranded on base. In the top of the fifth the Vikings lead off batter reached on a double. After Peterson’s sixth strikeout of the game the next batter laid down a safety bunt in an attempt to bring in the runner from third base. In the defensive play of the game, the bunt came back to a hard charging Peterson who barehanded a toss to catcher Max Gagnon who was covering home. The play was so well executed by Peterson and Gagnon that the runner did not even attempt to slide as he was out by a mile for out number two. The third out was the result of Peterson’s seventh strike out of the game and you can feel the energy on the Sanderson side of the field as they head to the dug out. The Spartans first baserunner in the fifth inning was left fielder Elliot Brody who alertly ran to first on a dropped third strike. Brunson then laid down a nice sacrifice bunt to move Brody over to second base with two outs. Brommer then hit a shot up the middle that scored Brody from second base for the first run of the game. Wood’s single to left field now places two Spartans on base. Wigmore then delivered his second hit of the game and plated Brommer to increase Sanderson’s lead to 2-0 as we head to the sixth inning. After a pop fly to Wood for the first out the next Viking batter popped out to Brody in left field. Brommer got the last out when a grounder was hit his way and he threw to Wolfe at first base. In our half of the sixth inning Gagnon (pinch runner Seth Elderkin) hit for a single and he was followed by right fielder Travis Trumps who reached base with an infield single. We head to the top of the seventh with a slim 2-0 lead over a Wilmington team that has been averaging over 11 runs per game in the 2008 state playoffs. Wilmington’s lead off batter reached on a full count walk to start the seventh inning. Now it is Peterson’s time to turn the lights off in this game. With three consecutive strike outs to end the game Peterson gives Sanderson the opportunity to play for the 4A East Regional title for the first time since 1992. With the win Sanderson claims the Sectional Championship and now looks forward to their next opponent. Records – Sanderson 19-6 Wilmington Hoggard 21-5 Vikings pitching -- A. Honeycutt pitched a CG, 8 hits, 1 K, 1 W, 2 runs. Vikings batters – S. Johnson (2-3, 2B) and L. Caldwell (1-3. 2B) Sanderson pitching -- Mark Peterson (5-2), CG shutout for his second CG shutout of the year. Mark allowed 3 hits, HB, and had 10K’s giving Mark 72 for the year. This was Mark’s second straight playoff game with ten strikeouts. Sanderson batters – Kyle Wigmore (2-3, RBI, run), Kyle Wood (2-3), Eric Brommer (1-3, RBI, run), Max Gagnon (1-3), Travis Trumps (1-3), Robert Brunson (1-2). Wednesday, October 8 Spartans fall 5-0 in first game of 4A East Regional Finals In the opening game of the best of three game series Greenville Rose took an early 3-0 lead after one inning on its way to a 5-0 win on May 22, 2008, at Sanderson Field. Game 2 will be tomorrow in Greenville. With another large and loud home crowd cheering the Spartans, Sanderson took the field ready for their shot at the NCHSAA 4A East Regional Championship. Before we could record the first out the Rampant's had the bases loaded. A fielder’s choice hit to SS Kyle Wigmore, the throw made to Mark Peterson at first, brought in the first Greenville run. A hit batter then brought in a second run before Sanderson pitcher Charles Wolfe recorded his first strike out for the first out. One more run would cross the plate for the Rampants before 2nd baseman Robert Brunson recorded the final out with his throw to Peterson at first. In our half of the first inning, center fielder Kyle Wood would be our first baserunner with his single to left field. That was all we would get so after one inning it is Greenville with an early 3-0 lead. The Spartans settled down and looked better in the field as Greenville batted for the second time. With their lead off batter hitting a fly ball to CF Wood for the first out, their next batter grounded out to SS Wigmore for the second out. After a Rampant hit a double pitcher Wolfe got the last batter to pop out to 2B Brunson for the final out. In Sanderson’s bottom of the second we go down 1-2-3. Greenville Rose added two more runs in the third on three singles. CF Wood got his second fly ball for the first out and first baseman Peterson had a ground ball hit to him for the second out. Pitcher Wolfe then picked off a Rampant runner trying to steal third when he threw the ball to third baseman Eric Brommer who placed the tag on the runner for the final out. Sanderson’s batters would once again go down in order as we head to the fourth inning with Greenville increasing its lead to 5-0. Greenville’s lead off batter reached base with a single and was then picked off at first by catcher Max Gagnon, who threw down to first for first baseman Peterson who tagged the runner diving back. Left fielder Elliot Brody caught a fly ball for another out and third baseman Brommer also caught an infield fly ball for the final out. SS Wigmore would be our only baserunner when he reached on a walk. Wigmore stole second and was stranded on second. After three innings the score remains in Greenville’s favor, 5-0. For the first time this game Greenville would only send three batters to the plate. The lead off batter reached on an infield error and advanced to second on a fielder’s choice. The second out occurred when left fielder Elliot Brody dove to catch a fly ball. The third out occurred when a runner on second base tried to steal third but Spartan catcher Gagnon threw a bullet down to third baseman Brommer who placed the tag on the runner. Sanderson’s Brody got our only hit of the inning, a single up the middle. After five innings it remains 5-0 Rose. For the second consecutive inning Spartan pitcher Wolfe is able to put down the Rose batters in order. There were two ground balls hit to SS Wigmore and 3B Brommer caught his second pop fly of the game for another out. Our first base runner in the sixth was Brommer, who reached on an infield error. CF Wood got his second hit of the night for our only hit of the inning. We head to the final inning on the short end of a 5-0 score. Spartan reliever Brommer comes in to pitch the seventh, moving Wolfe to first base and Peterson to third base. The lead off batter hits a single to right field and is later thrown out by catcher Gagnon, his third of the game, as he attempted a steal to second. 2B Brunson covered and made the tag. Brommer strikes out a batter for the second out and that is followed by a fielder’s choice. Sanderson’s lead off batter, Wolfe, reached base on a walk as our only baserunner of the last inning. Wolfe is later thrown out on a throw from first to third as Wolfe was attempting to reach third. Final score Greenville Rose 5 Sanderson 0 We now head to Greenville for game two tomorrow night. Wednesday, October 8 Spartans end tremendous run in state playoffs in Greenville, NC On May 23, 2008, the Spartans (19-8) season came to an end in Greenville, NC, against perennial power house Greenville Rose (25-3), with a final score of 10-3, in the best of three NCSHAA 4A East Regional Finals. Greenville Rose now moves on to the State 4A Championship series against Audrey Kell. In a season full of firsts, there are many positives to be taken from this season. First CAP 7 Conference Champions since 1992, first 4A East District Champions since 1992, first 4A East Sectional Champions since 1992 and the first appearance in the NCSHAA 4A East Regionals since 1992!! More importantly we played before a packed house every game during the run through the state playoffs. The crowds are coming out. We are losing four talented seniors in Elliot Brody, Eric Brommer, Seth Elderkin and Mark Peterson, who have made tremendous contributions and have been instrumental in turning this baseball program around but there is a core of six junior starters returning and sophomores coming up that will be expected to step it up next season. Tonight’s game was played at beautiful Guy Smith Stadium in Greenville, NC, and it is Sanderson’s first away game in the playoffs. Sanderson batted first as the visitors and we could not get any runners on base as we head to the bottom of the inning. As with last night’s game, Sanderson’s defense struggled coming out of the gate. Rose’s first batters reached base and two runs crossed the plate before we could record the first out of the inning. Catcher Max Gagnon caught a towering foul ball on the third base side of the plate for the first out. In a nice ending to the inning, a ground ball hit to second baseman Robert Brunson turned into an inning ending double play; Brunson to SS Kyle Wigmore at second and then to Charles Wolfe at first. After one inning Rose leads 4-0 in a must win game for Sanderson to keep alive its hopes of forcing a game three back in Raleigh. Senior Mark Peterson led off the second with our first hit of the game, a single up the middle. That is all the good news for the second so Greenville comes to bat with their 4-0 lead. After the lead off batter reached on a single, third baseman Peterson played a sacrifice bunt with his bare hand and threw to Wolfe at first. Two more singles would bring in one more run before 2B Brunson had a ground ball hit to him for the first out, a throw to 1B Wolfe. The final out came when senior pitcher Eric Brommer recorded his first strikeout of the game to end the inning. After two innings it is now 5-0 Greenville. Right fielder Travis Trumps led off the third inning with a single to left but was out on a double play ball. Brommer got our second hit of the inning but was stranded on first. For the third consecutive inning Rose’s lead off batter reached base, a single to left. The second batter hit for a single that was followed by a ground ball double play; SS Wigmore to 2B Brunson to 1B Wolfe, that moved the runner to third. A third single in the inning plates another run. CF Kyle Wood gets the final out for us on a fly ball. After three innings it is now 6-0 Greenville. 3B Peterson would get Sanderson on the board with a solo home run over the left field fence. 1B Wolfe followed that with a single to close out the hits for us in the fourth. Sanderson cuts into the Greenville lead, now 5-1. Sophomore Bryan Burke took the mound to face the Rose batters in the bottom of the fourth. Burke would strikeout the first batter but the next batter reached base on an infield error. Burke would get another strikeout which represented the second out. A single to left field scores a run followed by a ground ball to 1B Wolfe for the final out. Rose responded to Sanderson’s home run and maintain a comfortable six run lead, 7-1, after four innings. In the top of the fifth Brommer would get his second hit of the game and that was all the noise for the inning. Aided by two Spartan errors, Greenville added three runs in the fifth and all the runs were scored with two outs. Burke pushed his strikeout total to four as he struck out two more batters in the inning. The final out was on a ground ball to SS Wigmore and his throw to 1B Wolfe. Now after five innings Rose increased their lead to 10-1. Senior pitcher Mark Peterson, who faced one batter in the bottom of the fifth, took the mound at the top of the sixth inning and kept the Rampants off the scoreboard. SS Wigmore got our first out on a ground ball thrown to 1B, followed by a ground ball hit to 2B Brunson. The last out came on a pick off throw by catcher Gagnon to first base with 1B Wolfe applying the tag. This was Gagnon’s fourth runner that he picked off base in the Regionals. So, Sanderson comes to bat in the top of the seventh in need of a lot of runs to bring the series back to Raleigh. Sanderson’s Gagnon, our lead off batter, started us off with a single to right field, followed by RF Trumps single up the middle. What a nice way to start the final inning. 2B Brunson stepped it up with his two RBI single to right field that plates Gagnon (pinch runner Sam Beavans) and Trumps. Brommer walked and pinch hitter John McFarling was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. We tried but this was it for the inning. Final score Greenville Rose (26-3) 10 Sanderson (19-8) 3 Sanderson pitching – Eric Brommer (1-1), 3 IP, 1K, 3W, 6 runs. Bryan Burke 1 2/3 IP, 4K, 4 runs. Mark Peterson 1 1/3 IP, 2W. Sanderson batters – Eric Brommer (2-3, W), Travis Trumps (2-3, run), Mark Peterson (2-4, HR, RBI, run), Robert Brunson (1-2, W, 2 RBI), Max Gagnon (1-3 run), and Charles Wolfe (1-3). Thanks for another great season and memories to treasure. |
