Sanderson Baseball JV Game Notes
April 21st   2009
Wakefield 12  Sanderson 10

This was a very back and forth, up and down baseball game.  As far as the game play is concerned, it was a game that had lots of poor execution by both teams.  I thought that we did an excellent job at continuing to battle and work hard.  That is the make up of this team that I have really come to enjoy this season.  This team has not once given up, not once quit and not once rolled over.  We have battled hard all game and all season when we are behind and that is one of the intangibles of baseball that I am very proud we have.  We did a great job with some double steals and getting base runners, and anytime you score 10 runs you should come out with a win.  Unfortunately, we were not able to execute routine plays and it ultimately caught up to us and beat us.  Remember, most ball games are lost, not won.  Let’s work hard tomorrow at practice, come back, and get a win on Thursday.

Positives:

Scored 10 runs
Continued to work hard and battle through adversity
We had 5 singles a double and triple
Very patient and worked 10 walks
Great base running with a double steal and a total of 5 stolen bases
Great sacrifice bunt and doing your job at the plate
Had at least 2 innings with the bases loaded and either no outs or 1 out.

Things to improve:

4 strike outs… 3 looking
Defense needs to clean it up and make routine plays. 6 errors is not acceptable
We gave them far too many runs (9 out of the 12 we gave to them by errors or walks)
Pitching staff needs to throw strikes.  10 walks cannot happen. Especially walks when you have a 3-run lead.

Game Awards:

Star: Patrick Quinn (1-2 RBI with 2 BB 2 stolen bases, 2 runs scored)
Bull Dog: N/A (couldn’t finish game)
Gold glove: Christian Densmore
Silver Slugger:  Joel Haran RBI triple

Sanderson 8  Broughton 5

Good job today coming out ready to play baseball.  We came out in the first inning and had a quick 8 pitch inning defensively and then scored 2 in the bottom of the 1st and never lost the lead.  With Joel throwing a great game on the mound, we did a pretty good job at scoring runs for him and giving him support.  Defensively we need to clean it up for next game.  We made 4 errors and all 5 runs were un-earned.  We need to stay away from imploding and giving the other team easy runs and base runners.  Just continue to make the routine plays from the first pitch to the last pitch and we will be fine.  Overall, it was a good win, but we have plenty of areas to improve on.

Positives:

Scored 8 runs on only 6 hits, so we made the most of our opportunities.
Joel pitched a very good game
Kept the composure through a tense part of the game
Were patient at the plate drawing 8 walks
Good 1st inning
Execution of a “hit and run”

Things to improve:

4 strike outs… 3 looking
Need to clean up the defense
Do not give away runs

Game Awards:

Star:  Joel Haran
Bull Dog: Joel Haran
Gold glove: Joel Haran, Will Altman
Silver Slugger:  Ben Woodward (3 RBI)

Enloe 3  Sanderson 2

The conference trend continues with another 1-run game.  We have played four conference games and they have been decided by a total of four runs.  This competition in conference makes for some great baseball games, and shows how important doing the little things each and every play.  I thought this was a very well pitched game and defensively I thought we played solidly, and when we did make a few mistakes, they didn’t harm us.  As a team, we had 5 hits, which was ok, but I think we are a much better team offensively than that. We need to get back that COLLECTIVE CONFIDENCE!

Positives:

Tom pitched a very strong game.
Played very solidly defensively
Kept the composure through out the game

Things to improve:

1) OFFENSE!

Game Awards:

Star:  Tom Priester
Bull Dog: N/A
Gold glove: Joel Haran
Silver Slugger:  Tom Priester

WFR 7 Sanderson 6

Just like every conference game that we have played so far, this was a one run ball game.  It is especially tough to lose by a walk of homerun, but sometimes you just have to tip your hat to the other team.  We did a very good job at coming out and building a lead.  We played solid defense except for one inning, and then we did an excellent job at battling back and tying the game up.  One good swing on a good pitch can change the outcome of a game.  That is why every single at bat, base running play, and defensive play is so important.  I was very proud of our effort and the way we played this game, we are going to come back today and work a little harder and focus on winning the JV Tournament.

Positives:

Offensively we did a good job at starting out with three runs and keeping the pressure in the other dugout
Good job being aggressive on the base paths.
Great at bat by Christian in the top of the 7th to start the rally
Did a great job of coming back in the 7th inning and extending the ball game
Never once did we think we were out of the ball game
Very solid pitching from Tom and Joel

Things to improve:

We need to get better at playing with a lead, and holding a lead
Stay away from that one bad inning!

Game Awards:

Star:  Christian Densmore
Bull Dog: Joel Haran
Gold glove: Trey Lassiter, Will Altman
Silver Slugger:  Trey Lassiter

Sanderson 6 Millbrook 5

This game had everything in it that you could have in a baseball game.  The lead changed twice, there was a triple play, and an interference play, and a walk of single.  This wasn’t a very cleanly played game, but we did a good job at not having our best and still working out a win.  We were ahead, then we had one bad inning, and had to come back and win in the bottom of the 7th.  We need to stay away from giving the other team that one inning.  When we can consistently make all the routine plays every single inning and avoid that one big inning, we will be a very good ball club.  Good conference win.

Positives:

Won a tight ball game
Battled back and got the job done.
Patrick good heads up play throwing a guy out at second base from RF
Nice defensive play by Ben on a bunt down the 3rd base line
Once we started to come back in the 6th, we got the intensity back in our favor

Things to improve:

VERY BAD BASERUNNING
We need to have better concentration, we cant be dropping easy outs on tag plays

Game Awards:

Star:  Patrick Quinn
Bull Dog: Joel Haran/ Will Altman
Gold glove: Ben Woodward/ Patrick Quinn
Silver Slugger:  Christian Densmore

Middle Creek 14  Sanderson 4

This game might have been one of the most frustrating games of the season.  It was frustrating because we did not play Sanderson Baseball.  We were lacking intensity, focus, and desire.  We came out flat, played flat, and left flat.  I think the only real positives that we can take out of this game is that we scored 1 in the top of the first which is always nice to put pressure on early.  You also noticed that when we had guys on base and we can execute plays (double steal) we put pressure on people and we ended up scoring 3 runs that inning.  It wasn’t a well played game and the score doesn’t bother me because it what we deserved, but the lack of effort and concentration is what bothered the coaches and the team the most.  This game is behind us, now lets get ready for conference on Tuesday against Millbrook.

Positives:

Double steal lead to 3 runs
Put up 1 run in the top of the 1st
The run we scored in the first was manufactured perfectly. Walk, SB, sac, sac.

Things to improve:

Lazy Baseball (scored 2x from second on passed balls)
Focus and intensity

Game Awards:

No game awards this game

Very good job on our first conference win of the season.  Conference is a completely different style of game and a completely different level of intensity.  We did a great job at not giving up the big first inning and that helped our 1-0 lead and kept them playing from behind the whole game.  All of the runs they scored were un-earned, so lucky for us our mistakes did not cost us, but a mistake that does not seem like a big deal at the time, can lead to a 3-run inning and a tie ball game.  We did an excellent job at keeping the stress puppy in their dugout, and we came up with a huge hit when we needed it. We had outstanding pitching from both pitchers, and other than that one inning, we had solid defense.  Let’s keep the positive momentum going into next week!

Positives:

Scored 4 runs on 4 hits
Stayed away from giving up a big first inning
Threw out a base runner to end the first inning
Good play by Tom at first base on a hard ground ball
Did not panic when the game was tied.
Stayed positive, and mentally tough through out the whole game.

Things to improve:

We cannot afford to take a single play off
Two small errors get magnified to make one big inning in conference play
Still need to work on better communication on the infield pop-ups
Make better decisions on the bases.  We cannot get picked off at second base with no outs in the top of the 6th in a tie ball game!

Game Awards:

Star:  Will Altman
Bull Dog: Joel Haran
Gold glove: Luke Willard
Silver Slugger:  Luke Willard ( game winning RBI)

Sanderson Baseball JV Game Notes

Sanderson 12 Cary 7

Once again, we spotted the other team 3-4 runs in the first inning.  This is a trend we need to remove from our game.  Playing from behind always puts more pressure on the pitcher, defense, offense and coaches.  It also limits our aggressiveness on the bases.  Other than that, we played solid baseball.  We were aggressive on the bases, battled back and had some big innings.  When we run the bases well and swing the bats well, it puts a lot of pressure on the other team and increases our odds of scoring runs.  This was a good win, and lets be ready for conference play tomorrow.

Positives:

Put up the most runs we have had all season
Executed a double steal
Ben made two defensive plays with the infield in that saved 2 runs
Good aggressive base running
2 base hit bunts by Joel
Turned a double play to end the game

Things to improve:

Bottom of the lineup needs to do better at scoring runners.  Had the bases loaded with no outs and have back-to-back strikeouts! THAT CANT HAPPEN!
Communication within the infield and outfield needs to get better.  Know who has ball priority
Stay away from letting the other team have a big first inning
We cannot afford to give away outs.  Especially a first and 3rd  situation with 2 outs.  If we throw down to second to get the last out of the inning, the shortstop or 2nd baseman needs to hold onto the tag!

Game Awards:

Star:  Joel Haran
Bull Dog: Tom Priester
Gold glove: Ben Woodward
Silver Slugger:  Joel Haran

Sanderson 5  Athens Dr. 1

For the first game of the season, I think I can speak for everyone by saying that we played a very solid game.  We made a few mistakes that will be corrected for the next game, but overall I was very pleased with the way we played.  We had solid defense, good pitching, and timely hitting.  We did all of the little things well, and our hustle and intensity was outstanding.  If we can keep that mental attitude and continue to play solid baseball, we can and will have a very successful season.  Today will be a good test to see how we play on back-to-back days.

Positives:

Played overall solid defense
Had a good sacrifice bunt
Didn’t miss any signs
Good hustle
Decent pitching
Made a good 1st and 3rd double play
Good intensity/team work
No “stress puppy” in the dugout
Aggressive base running

Things to improve:

Too many strike outs on offense.  3 looking 3 swinging
Too many walks as pitchers  10BB is way too many
Had some bad base running plays.  Picked off at 2nd and not tagging at 3rd
We could have had more runs if we would have been more productive with runners in scoring position

Game Awards:

Star: Tom Priester
Bull Dog: Will Altman
Gold glove: Entire Infield
Silver Slugger: Joel Haran

Panther Creek 3  Sanderson 1

If there is one phrase that I think would sum this game up, it would be “missed opportunities” We were so close and had plenty of chances and just couldn’t make things happen.  Baseball is a funny sport like that, you can have all the opportunities in the world and not score and lose, or you can do everything wrong, make one good play and get a win.  If we continue to put runners on base we will turn them into runs, we just need to keep working hard, and continue to play our game.

Positives:

Had 12 hits
Only made 1 error
Our pitchers only had 1 BB
Executed a “hit and run”
We got frustrated but did a good job of keeping the “stress puppy” out of the dug-out
Joel’s catch in the bottom of the 4th saved a run

Things to improve:

Missed opportunities
We had 7 k’s  1 looking 6 swinging
Only walked once offensively
left 10 men on base
picked off at first
being overly aggressive and swinging at bad pitches with men in scoring position

Game Awards:

Star:  Ben Woodward
Bull Dog: Joel Haran
Gold glove: Joel Haran and Trey Lassiter (for the non-double play)
Silver Slugger: Ben Woodward ( 2-3 with the only RBI)

Sanderson Baseball JV Game Notes

March 6th 2009

Middle Creek 8  Sanderson 2

Not exactly how I pictured the home opener going, but sometimes that happens.  I think the game was a good reminder on why we need to come out prepared and ready to go from the first time we get into the dug out until the last pitch. Home games are a little more stressful as far as time management, but we need to be prepared and ready to play baseball.  If we stay away from that big first inning, this would have been a good ball game, instead of us playing catch up.    We have 3 games this week, and 2 of them are home games.  Lets make sure we do the little things to prepare ourselves for the games and come to the ball field ready to play well.

Positives:

Managed 9 hits
Only made 1 error
Great play with Tom and Luke
Decent pitching
After the first inning settled down and limited scoring chances

Things to improve:

Of the 9 hits 8 were singles. We need to be able to move more than one base at a time
Had a really bad first inning
Need to come out ready to play
We will not let outside factors (umpires, other team) dictate how we play, or take us mentally away from our approach.
Played from behind, and that caused us to let the “stress puppy” in the dug out

Game Awards:

Star: N/A
Bull Dog: Luke Willard, Trey Lassiter
Gold glove: Tom Priester for his outfield assist
Silver Slugger: Will Altman (3 hits)
