Calling the strike zone The number one controversy in little league umpiring bar none is calling the strike zone. Do you make it big so you don't have a walk fest but then risk having good players learning to hit bad pitches or call it tight and have a lot of walks and end up discouraging children who should be learning how to hit from swinging more on the ones that can be hit. Click on the title of this artice for a link to a few helpful unwritten rules about calling balls and strikes. RECENT RULES UPDATES Never umpired before?? Just click on the underlined title above to get a quick refresher course on umpiring. This is a 2-3 page summary of the core basics of umpiring. Timing your calls - the thud principle Click on the title of this article to read a good short article about timing your calls. The problem is that if you call easy calls quickly and delay on harder calls it lets the coaches, players and fans know that you had a more difficult time making the call. Plus sometimes if you make the call to early you end up having to change it (or wishing you could) when the throw is dropped or you realize that that outside curve ball really did break over the plate. By using the pause -read(reviewing the pitch or play in your mind) - react method after you hear the thud your timing will be better and you will be a better umpire. Umpiring Resources Haven't umpired before or would like a quick refresher on umpire mechanics or rules. I have several videos that you are welcome to borrow a) rules for dummies b) basics of doing the plate c) how to handle conflict d) basics of 60 foot diamond two umpire mechanics (in 20 minutes you will know the basics of where to be and what to on the field) or click on underlined Umpiring Resources the website for a good mechanics review.
