San Bernardino County Cross Country: Sunkist League

The Sunkist League features the Bloomington Bruins, the Colton Yellowjackets, the Fontana Steelers, the Grand Terrace Titans, the Kaiser Cats and the Summit Skyhawks.

2014 Boys Outlook

The Sunkist League was untouched by the releaguing process.  The race for the boys title looks to be very close, but we will give Bloomington the edge.  The Bruins have the stronger front runner in junior Daniel Juarez, who ran 16:46, and they have a tighter 2-5 pack of only 31 seconds and all under 18:00.  Grand Terrace is improving and they are younger, but Jared Baca will need to improve to chase down Juarez.  In addition, they have 5th man problems that could result in a 1:30 difference between them and the Bruins.  They should have enough to secure 2nd in the league although Fontana is a wild card here.  The Steelers are very good through three, with Marcos Guillan at 16:22, but there is a dropoff to the 4th spot and no information on a 5th runner.  Colton has better numbers but need to improve at #4 and #5 to make a run here.

2014 Girls Outlook

We know that Summit won the title last year in a very close race with Grand Terrace, but there were many seniors throughout the league and information is pretty scarce.  One thing is certain...Summit's Jennifer Sandoval will run away with the individual league title.  She won by over 2 minutes last year, but she will need an improved supporting cast if the Skyhawks want to defend their title.  Grand Terrace looks like they are in position to take the title with a young squad that is pretty tightly packed.  Paige Housley leads the way with a 20:52.  Fontana has a pretty solid top 3, but no information on a supporting cast.  Michelle Pineda runs up front for the Steelers at 20:55 and their 2-3 were in within 15 seconds last year on the Mt. SAC course.

2013 Boys Outlook:
The boys race in the Sunkist League appears to be tight for the title.  Fontana and Bloomington only have a point separating them based on league finals results from a year ago, with the Steelers having the slight edge.  The Steelers used a 30 second gap from 1-5 last season, but with two graduating, they will have some work to do to accomplish that again.  The third spot for the post-season will be totally up for grabs!  Individually, there may be no catching Bloomington's Daniel Valderrama, who won the title easily last year and on paper has over a full minute advantage over the nearest challenger.  Colton's Gilbert Leon qualified as an individual last season and should be in position to do it again.

2013 Girls Outlook:
For the girls, another tight battle will ensue as Grand Terrace attempts to turn the tables on Bloomington.  On paper, they should do it, although only by a 2 point margin.  The advantage the Titans enjoy could be greater as the new school adds another grade and the program builds.  Fontana appears in position to sneak up and grab the 3rd place position and advance to CIF.  Summit's Jennifer Sandoval ran 2nd at last year's league finals and with Colton's Alysa Avila graduating, has the inside track to take the league title.
