2014 Boys Outlook

2013 Desert Sky League champion Burroughs Ridgecrest takes a step up and into the Mojave River League in 2014.  Only three return from a year ago and with the competition stronger, they will need to step it up to challenge for the postseason.  Serrano is the dominant force here.  Much heralded on the girls side, the boys program is now catching up.  The Diamondbacks rolled a 16 at League Finals last year, and despite losing the top three finishers, are poised to roll again in 2014.  Tommy Manning and Ben Gutierrez will lead the team, attempting a return to CIF Finals.  Manning broke 16 at Mt. SAC and Gutierrez ran 16:19 and their 5th runner is sitting at 17:00.  What could make a huge difference for the Diamondbacks is sophomore Jhavahn Holsten, who was absent in cross country as a freshman, but then ran the fastest 1600 by any freshman in the County in track, an impressive 4:32.35.  Besides Burroughs, Sultana and Apple Valley will battle for runner-up in all likelihood, and it could be an interesting battle.  Sultana is stronger up front, placing three in front of the top Apple Valley runner on paper, but Apple Valley packs all five in front of Sultana's number 4 man.  Sultana has a fine pair of sophomores in Uriel Mercado and Manuel Ramirez, who were both just above 16:40 on the Mt. SAC course.  The Sun Devils will be led by junior Daniel Solis and a tight pack.

2014 Girls Outlook

Serrano finished the year as the top ranked team in San Bernardino County and may begin in that spot again.  They completely dominated the league a year ago and performed well all the way to Fresno and the State Meet.  The Diamondbacks did it with a rock solid five and while losing their top runner, Melissa Fairchild, is a big blow, they have plenty more where that came from.  Kelly Fairchild broke 18 and Courtney Brenner ran 18:03, so they are fabulous up front and they have 3-4 runners that are sub-19.  If there is any weakness, it is in their 5th girl, but that is only if you are comparing this team to themselves last year.  Most teams would love to have a 19:24 for their top runner and that is where Serrano's current 5th ran a year ago.  This is a loaded team that is setting big goals again in 2014.  Burroughs is returning 6 of 7 from a CIF qualifying team, but they are in no position to challenge Serrano.  They will, however, be right in the mix with the rest of the league.  Sultana is solid through four with Kylee Upham (19:15) leading the way, but need to close a 2:30 gap from 4 to 5.  Apple Valley has some depth, but will need to progress to challenge for a CIF spot here.  Hesperia's Stefani Gaskell advanced to CIF as an individual and ran 18:56, so look for her to advance again.

2013 Boys Outlook:
It was complete domination last season as Serrano took the first 5 places.  They may not duplicate that feat this year, but they will have no problem defending their team title.  They project to be easy winners with 18 points, but after that, it will be a real dog fight.  Apple Valley loses 3 of their top 4 to graduation, which brings them back to the pack.  Potentially, 11 points separate 2nd from 5th, but much depends on Hesperia's ability to back up their solid top 2.  If they can, they could finish 2nd, with Apple Valley and Sultana too close to call for the 3rd spot.  Individually, Serrano's Hunter Cornell should come out on top again!

2013 Girls Outlook:
Traditionally, the Mojave River League has been very solid on the girls side, but Serrano has distanced themselves from the rest.  As solid a team as any in San Bernardino County, the Diamondbacks bring back 6 of their 7 that ran out of their minds at the State Meet in Fresno a year ago.  They will have no problem repeating, as the league meet represents something closer to a mid-season meet.  Sultana, behind the strength of Moriah Munyan and Kaylee Upham, should take second by a comfortable margin, while Apple Valley and Oak Hills battle for the final spot.  The league features outstanding individual talent with the Sultans mentioned, as well as CIF Finalist Stefani Gaskell (Hesperia).  However, to win the title, they would need to defeat one of the state's finest in Serrano's Melissa Fairchild
