2014 Boys Outlook

The Citrus Belt League has expanded from a 6 team league to an 8 team league, adding Citrus Valley and Carter.  This puts all the Redlands schools in the same league which will intensify rivalries.  The power, especially on the boys side, resides in Redlands and Yucaipa.  Carter was the league champion in the San Andreas League a year ago, but the combination of being devastated by graduation and being moved into this league will cause the Lions to struggle.  Yucaipa will be the team to beat with over a 3 minute team time advantage over the rest of the league.  Thomas Durham ran 15:37 and will lead a strong Thunderbird squad that returns sophomore Tanner Dutchover and two others who ran below 16:30.  If they can shore up their #5 spot, look for this team to move deep into the post-season.  Citrus Valley is poised to move in and take 2nd place here as Aiden Morris and his 16:06 leads the Blackhawks.  Their challenge will be to take a solid 2-5 pack and get more production.  Redlands East Valley has David Hughes (15:43), who will challenge Durham for the league title, backed up by Christian Sharp and his 16:07, but have some work to do at 4 and 5.  Redlands should be able to secure a spot in the post-season.  The Terriers have a solid young squad that did some damage early last year, but struggled at Mt. SAC.  Getting Xolan Brown into the mix would be a big boost.  Cajon ran strong late last season, but were senior heavy.

2014 Girls Outlook

A pretty good team will likely stay home and not compete at CIF Prelims in November.  There are five solid teams and with four CIF spots, one will not advance.  Yucaipa is the favorite here despite losing top runner Tori Dutchover to graduation.  The Thunderbirds advanced to the State Meet a year ago but with the depth they possess, they could return to Fresno for Thanksgiving.  The top four are packed up very well in the 18's and if they can get a 5th in that same range, they should take the league title.  Sydney Vollhardt, Kenadi Davis, Justine Jackson and Arianna Garcia-Swantek make up that solid senior four and they will look to Shelby Eberwein as their fifth, although they had Carolina Samano run 5:23 in the 1600 during track season and have others ready to step up.  Redlands will not allow Yucaipa to take the title without a fight.  They return a team that is just 1:20 behind on paper and feature a powerhouse in sophomore Karen Jacobs, who has run 17:49 at Mt. SAC as well as all scorers under 20 minutes.  They will need to close a 31 second gap between their 4th and 5th.  Citrus Valley moves in to fight for a CIF spot led by sophomore Claire Graves, who boasts 17:10 Mt. SAC credentials, the top returning mark in the County.  If they can shore up a massive 1:14 gap between 4 and 5, they could be right in the mix.  Redlands East Valley has two sub-19:00 sophomores in Samantha Aguilar and Vanessa Gaitan, but also has problems at the back end with a 2:08 gap between 4 and 5.  Cajon is a wildcard here as they bring back their entire team including CIF Finalist Samantha Poliakon, who ran 18:16 last season.  They don't compete at Mt. SAC, so it's hard to get a read, but if they can develop, they will be in the mix.  This is an outstanding league that will have great team battles as well as a handful of strong individuals, with 7 of the 14 pre-season All-County members all hailing from the Citrus Belt League!

2013 Boys Outlook:
It doesn't appear to be a matter of who will win the league title this year, but how low their score will be.  Yucaipa scored 18 a year ago and on paper the Thunderbirds could amass a perfect score at League Finals this season.  League champion Kris Mazich is the only loss out of their top 7, and while losing your top runner can be a huge loss, it may have minimal effect for this deep squad, at least within the CBL.  They missed a CIF Finals berth by one position last year, but look to join their girls squad at the big dance in 2013.  Redlands will be led by super-frosh Xolan Brown, who is coming off a monster track season (1:57.30-800 meters), as he tries to duplicate success at the longer distance.  The Terriers are in good position to finish 2nd while Cajon and Redlands East Valley will battle for the 3rd qualifying spot.  For individuals, unless Brown makes in-roads, it will be a matter of which Yucaipa runner will win the title, with Andrew Humphries the favorite.

2013 Girls Outlook:
How good will Yucaipa be this season?  This is a squad that reached the State Meet a year ago and only their #7 graduated.  Much can happen over a year, but all indications are that this team will be better.  The Thunderbirds will battle Serrano for County supremacy;  if both squads come to the Inland Empire Challenge, they can settle it head-to-head.  They scored 17 points at League Finals last year, and they should be able to match that in what is really a very solid girls cross country league.  Despite being routed at League Finals, Redlands went on to finish 5th in their prelims heat, while Redlands East Valley finished 7th in their heat.  The Terriers have the depth to again to take second, led by the Crowley's (Claire and Allison).  Cajon, who missed CIF by just 3 points, had a young squad last year and should have the inside track to take 3rd and advance this year behind Samantha Poliakon, who had a very fine frosh season.  Individually, this title belongs to Yucaipa's superstar Tori Dutchover, one of the best in the state.  She romped to the title a year ago, then ran the 5th fastest 3200 meters in County history at 10:44.91 in the spring.  Teammates' Justine Jackson and Jess Aguilar should again back Dutchover up.
