San Bernardino County Cross Country: Citrus Belt League

The Citrus Belt League features the Citrus Valley Blackhawks, the Cajon Cowboys, the Carter Lions, the Eisenhower Eagles, the A.B. Miller Rebels, the Redlands Terriers, the Redlands East Valley Wildcats and the Yucaipa Thunderbirds.

2015 Boys Preview

As happened last year in this eight team league, you have five good teams battling for four CIF spots.  Yucaipa appears to be on track to win the league again despite only returning four from a CIF Finals team.  Those four are real good!  Tanner Dutchover and Curtis Durham provide a very solid 1-2 punch for the Thunderbirds at 15:52 and 16:06.  In addition, Stephen Farlander and Jake Keller are both sub-16:45.  Cajon looks poised to move up a spot for 2nd but lack the firepower up front to challenge Yucaipa.  Homero Orozco and Joey Dalton will lead the Cowboys, who have 4 sub-17:00 runners returning.  There is a drop of :43 to number five, which may give the other teams hope.  Citrus Valley looks to be a minute clear of the next closest team with 6 of 7 coming back from a CIF qualifying team a year ago.  A tight pack with a 1:07 scoring gap should allow them to advance, but with their top runner, Aiden Morris, projected just behind Yucaipa's fifth runner, they will be hard pressed to move up in the standings.  The battle for the final CIF spot will come down to Redlands East Valley and Redlands.  REV returns 5 of their 7 from a 2nd place team, but the two they lost were up front.  Sophomore Elias Opsahl finished 3rd at league finals last year and followed it up with a monster track season, so he may challenge for the league title and that 1 point would go a long way to taking the Wildcats to CIF.  Cody Nelson is solid at #2 with a 16:43, but things drop off from there, creating a 3:10 scoring gap.  On paper, Redlands is only 34 seconds off the Wildcats in team time and they have a much tighter pack with Daniel Tang and Nico Rominu leading the way.  However, in a league of haves vs. have nots, the numbers that fill the gap between the #1 and #2 runners is much greater than the advantage the Terriers might gain at the back end.

2015 Girls Preview

Much like the boys, 2014 saw five good teams battle for four spots.  The first three spots appear secure in 2015 and should duplicate the order from a year ago.  After that, there are question marks.  Yucaipa graduated an incredible class last year, but despite that, they are on track to win again, although certainly not by the margin of a year ago (58 points).  They had three under 19 last year with Mackenna Mason finishing 2nd in the league.  Sarah Gee and Delaney Ellsworth also broke that barrier at Mt. SAC.  Look for big improvement from sophomore Madison Parr, who shined with an 11:27 3200 meters in track.  Redlands, like everyone else in this league, took a big hit with graduation, but return 4 underclassmen that all ran under 20 minutes last season.  Karen Jacobs (18:51) should lead the Terriers again to a 2nd place finish.  They also have a fifth runner at 20:03, so there is no real drop off past those four.  As good as this league is for individuals, there is no question about a favorite for the title.  Citrus Valley's Claire Graves had a spectacular season, first leading her 3rd place CBL team to CIF Finals and then racing to a 4th place individual finish at the State Meet.  Track season also went pretty well for her as she closed in on the County record at 3200 meters with an incredible 10:26 effort.  The Blackhawks are also very solid at #2 and #3 with Rebecca Loflin and Carissa Gomez, both sub-19:30.  The problem is going to be filling a 1:38 gap between #3 and #4 and a nearly 2 minute gap from #4 to #5.  Across town lies the big question mark.  Because they didn't attend the Mt. SAC Invitational, I have little info on Redlands East Valley.  What is known is the ability of leader Samantha Aguilar, with 18:25 credentials.  They also have Vanessa Gaitan, who was solid at 19:25.  That's a great start, but the middle of their lineup was gutted by graduation.  Depth has always been a strength for the Wildcats, so I am confident that they will have the troops to step in and get them to CIF.  However, sorting out the difference between Citrus Valley and REV is difficult.  Cajon may end up on the outside again, despite a capable five.  They could least afford any loss in this league and losing Yulissa Mendoza to graduation will sting.  Samantha Poliakon, as good as she is (18:34), had to scramble for a CIF spot last year because this league is so outstanding.  She is back, along with four runners from 20:52 to 21:39, but they may need to rely on the others not being able to fill their gaps.
