San Bernardino County Cross Country: Baseline League

The Baseline League features the Chino Hills Huskies, the Etiwanda Eagles, the Los Osos Grizzlies, the Rancho Cucamonga Cougars and the Upland Highlanders.  In addition, non-San Bernardino County schools include Damien and St. Lucy's.

2014 Boys Outlook

The Baseline League has been around for a long time and has some changes this year.  The original plan brought Ayala and Chino Hills in, while taking Alta Loma and Glendora out.  The problem was that the plan made a parochial school league, making travel difficult since many of those parochial school were nowhere near each other.  Four of those parochial school sued and won, which took everyone back to the drawing board in March.  Not sure where they wanted to go, but my guess is that Damien and St. Lucy's would not have picked the Baseline League, which is where they landed.  A pair of Division 3 schools in a Division 1 league?  Other Division 2 schools that have done time here (Claremont and Glendora) have all got relief and been moved out, but for the next two years, this is home for Damien and St. Lucy's.  While Ayala was moved back out, Chino Hills is the new kid on the block and they are poised to battle for the league title.  Nathaniel Colletti leads a sub-:30 gap from 16:14 to 16:43 at Mt. SAC that on paper makes the Huskies the favorite.  They have about a 30 second team time lead on Rancho Cucamonga, who graduated their two big guns in Mat Holton and Anthony Ortega, but the Cougars have a history of reloading quickly.  Anthony Pierce returns with a 16:20 and they have 5 returners under 17:00 at Mt. SAC, so this battle will be close.  Those two have separation over the rest of the league, as Jacob Casillas and the Etiwanda Eagles have better 2-3 runners than Los Osos.  Casillas and the Grizzlies' Bradley Ewart both ran 15:55 at Mt. SAC a year ago and may be favorites for the individual title.

2014 Girls Outlook

On the girls side, there is a clear favorite.  With Glendora gone, Rancho Cucamonga should run away with the team race.  Defending league champion, Erin Holton, is back to lead the Cougars.  After an injury-marred track season, she returned to run well in May and is hopefully healthy now.  Much improved junior Megan Maretti (18:35) gives them a solid 1-2 along with decent depth.  On paper, the battle for second place looks to be between Los Osos and newcomer, Chino Hills.  While their projected team times are similar, they do not resemble each other.  The Grizzlies have better firepower up front, while the Huskies are stronger on the back end.  Los Osos needs 2012 league champion, Sarah Holloway, to return to form.  Injuries limited her to one race last season in cross country and a completely lost track season, but she has run under 18:30 at Mt. SAC.  The Huskies, led by junior Erin Carvalho, will try to prevail with their pack, scoring with times between 20:00 and 20:56.  Don't count out the rest of the league here as Upland improved throughout the 2013 season and if Etiwanda can convince sophomore track superstar Jacquelyn Hill (plays basketball...at Etiwanda!) to join them, the Eagles could knock about 6 minutes off their team time!  St. Lucy's has a rich history in the sport, but face depth issues in 2014.

2013 Boys Outlook:
Everytime it appears that Rancho Cucamonga will be gutted by graduation, they seem to reload with impact freshmen.  But they will need a bunch to fend off Glendora!  The Tartans project to be easy winners in the league with a 50 point cushion.  After that, everything is up for grabs as 8 points separate Etiwanda, Rancho Cucamonga, Los Osos and Alta Loma.  Summer work, newcomers and injuries will probably be big factors in sorting things out, but on paper, Rancho and Etiwanda come out with the CIF spots.  Individually, Mat Holton (Rancho Cucamonga) and Jeff Kirwin (Glendora) are poised to battle for the title.

2013 Girls Outlook:
Glendora graduated no one from their top 7.  They will romp to another league title in 2013, projecting a 38 point margin.  Things will get interesting after that.  Rancho Cucamonga has the depth to finish 2nd, while Los Osos and Etiwanda should battle for the 3rd spot.  The Grizzlies might have the league's top duo in Sarah Holloway and Alex Burkhart, but need a supporting cast.  However, that strength up front may give them an edge over the depth of the Eagles.  Individually, Glendora has Micaela Lamb and Emily Hoey leading the way as title contenders, but they couldn't contain Holloway last year and after a solid track season, she would be considered the favorite.  Burkhart may be the most improved, after lowering her 3200 time from 12:45 to under 11:30.
