Saddle Brook Kickball: Welcome
As many of you are aware, every year St. Phillips has its carnival. This event is looked forward to every year by the kids. Well, Wednesday is a Pay one price night for all of the rides. With a tight economy, this is a great night for the kids to go to the Carnival, go on the rides as much as they want, and the cost is minimized for the parent. For this reason we will be Cancelling all Rec Kickball games for this Wednesday July 22nd. Let the kids enjoy the night on the rides with their friends. Games are still scheduled for Thursday though.

WOW......What else can you say? Opening day was fantastic. We finally had a gorgeous day and the kids came out to play. It was about 6:00pm when the fields were ready for the onslaught of kids coming to invade franklin. After gathering them all together to explain the real basic rules they took to the fields to get going. The games were fun to watch. Here's some bits and pieces I saw that I thought would be considered highlights:
· "rock/paper/sissors" settles a dispute on a call
· “Here’s the pitch, he pulls the leg back and he Ki…MISSES the ball !!!! (that happened to more than I would have thought)
· The pitcher rolls the ball and hits to little guy on the nose. Hahahaha . you had to see it to believe it
· The runner ran to the base , ball is thrown at him, he leaps to avoid, and boom its hits him in the leg and down he goes. He was fine, I guess, since he was laughing
· Someone tell the Millionaire girls that you cannot catch the fly ball if you try and hit like you would in VOLLEYBALL
· A diving catch made on a fly ball to the outfield
· The best quote of the day….”its been 15 minutes and we played 7 innings, are we done yet??? “ you had to see the kids face when I told them they can play 50 innings if it fits in an hour
· Didn’t look like any child cared they were winning or losing to tell you the truth. That was evident by the 45-5 score at one point in a game and a 34-14 final in another game.
· How about the boy that ran backwards, fell on his butt, and still CAUGHT THE BALL
· BUNTING in kickball???? I guess the kids thought it was ok
· I never heard of a catcher in kickball, but it looks like they wanted one. So, now we have a catcher in kickball. COOL!!!!
· Best highlight----- Parents watched, Kids played!!!!! It doesn’t get any better than that
So, as we get ready for our next day of competition on Wednesday, July 1st, I hope all who played had some fun. It was a great time. The parents were out socializing and the kids were outside playing. The emails of Thanks have been pouring in today. As I walked around to watch the games, a thought came to me....These kids really are running the show and doing it very well. they did the lineup, positions, telling each other what to do while the game was going on, and even umpired the game. I realized that our children are not just having fun. They were actually learning skills of responsibility, conflict resolution, leadership, teamwork, and respect for others. It was great to see. You know what, I had a parent tell me that we should have some more rules for the kids. I asked why. The kids were doing an amazing job with what was in place. They were putting rules in place as the game went on and the other kids agreed. We have a sport now where the kids are running it. Let them do what they gotta do. Some may always win, some may always lose, and some may win a few as well as lose a few. Bottom line though is EVERYONE will have fun. That is why we go to watch. Enjoy the moment, let the kids be kids, and parents can watch/socialize. At the end of July, when the season is over, I am sure you will agree that the approach we are asking for will work out best for what we are trying to accomplish.
I will see everyone on Wednesday for some more KICKBALLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!

With our season now underway, I am looking for a few volunteers to handling some odds and ends throughout the season. Here is what we would like some help with:
1. Someone to take some pics at each game and post them to some web site (shutterfly, snapfish, etc...). Send me the link to those pictures and I will update the Kickball website with the link out to the pics so the kids and families can take a look at them. The kids love doing that actually
2. Need a few parents to help coordinate the games in K thr 2nd, but without being the focal point of the game. Give the kids as much space as possible, but just keep it moving along.
3. Parent to oversee the Older kids games to ensure that no arguments or issues occur. Also, to keep the games moving along.

Due to other town events, we have made the League to run on Monday, Wednesday , and Thursday. There will be 6 games per night. They will be played for 1 hour time limits at 6:30pm and then 7:30pm. Make sure all players bring gatorade or water to keep themselves hydrated. We will be asking parents to help us out at the games (umpiring the bases and to keep it moving along), especially for the CLINIC teams. Each team name has a corresponding team number. that is the number used for scheduling. The HOME TEAM IS LISTED SECOND.
