PHILS TAKE NORTH, BUT SOUTH, EAST & WEST STILL UP FOR GRABS

The playoffs resumed after a Labor Day Weekend which saw one of the Round One rainouts made up. The Colt 45's took a 1-0 lead over the Pitbulls last Sunday with an 11-4  victory. But after another rainout this Saturday, the Bulls swept the Colts in South Amboy on Sunday, finally bringing Round One to a close. The delay left the West's first-place Outlaws idle this weekend. In the East, the Cubs and Middlesex Pirates were also rained out Saturday. When they met on Sunday, they split. The Cubs went up 1-0 with a 5-4 win before the Pirates evened the series with a 5-3 decision in the nightcap. The clubs will meet Wednesday night in the rubber game.

The South's Division Championship Series also yielded a split after a Saturday night rainout. The Giants walloped the first-place Bears with a 15-3 TKO in the opener, but the Bears evened the series with a 3-2 decision in game two. Game three will be next Saturday night. And in the North, the Phillies secured their fourth consecutive trip to the Championship, sweeping their perennial rivals - the Cardinals - in two extra inning games. The Phils came from down 7-3 to edge the Cards 8-7 in ten innings in the only game played on Saturday. Then they took game two on Rich Aleman's third homer of the game - a walkoff in the bottom of the eleventh! The final was 11-10. The only other clubs to earn a championship berth four years running are the Irvington Cardinals (2002-'05), the Middlesex Bears (1998-2001) and the Carteret Mustangs who hold the record at five consecutive appearances (1994-'98).
