Round One Wrap Up

Competition was stiff as the Round One best of three series was full of sterling performances and stunning upsets. Three of the divisions' first place squads were upended by the fourth seeds in three game sets. The Orioles (North) and Senators (East) won their series opener on the road, but then got swept at home by the Phillies and Astros. The Brewers (West) lost a tough opener in eleven innings to the Reds 11-10, then bounced back with a 15-4 walloping on Sunday, but did not have enough left in the tank, as the Reds outlasted them in the rubber game 5-2. Only the first place Clippers (South) advanced. And though they swept the Yankees, they certainly did not have an easy time of it. They won the first game 1-0 on a suicide squeeze. And squeaked out game two 8-7 in fifteen innings after losing a late three run lead when Chris Bott belted a three run bomb for the Yankees.

Three of the four third place teams downed their second place rivals as well. The Cardinals (North), Dodgers (East), and Mavericks (South) swept the Lumberjacks, Bombers and Giants in two game sets. Only the West matchup between the Pitbulls and Pirates went three games. The third place Pitbulls won their opener at home 6-2. But on Sunday they were swept up in Parsippany 10-3 and 6-2.
