Fall Ball is Back!

After three consecutive weeks of rainouts, the Fall Ball season resumes and moves right to the playoffs. Rounds 1 and 2 to be played this weekend as Mother Nature relents.

DRAMATIC END TO A CLASSIC SERIES! GUIDA'S 3-RUN WALK-OFF ENDS IT IN THE NINTH! BEARS ARE CHAMPS AGAIN!

Gus Guida ended the game and the season with a dramatic, bottom of the ninth, walk-off, three run homer to turn a 9-7 deficit into a 10-9 Bears victory!

IT'S ALL OVER IN THE A LEAGUE!                           Oct 4, 2009

After six years of hard work and determination, the South Amboy Pitbulls are the 2009 A-League champions!

Facing their former division rivals from last year,  the South Amboy Pitbulls took on the Middlesex Pirates in the championship series.

A LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

In game 1 at the Lakewood Blueclaws stadium, the Pitbulls were focused and ready to play.  ThePitbulls jumped out to an early lead, plating 2 in the first inning behind the bats of Erik Kutz and Chris Blashfield.  The Pirates battled back scoring 2 in the fifth to tie the game. The Pitbulls scored another in the sixth, making the score 3-2.  The Pirates then put up 2 runs to go up 4-3, but the dawgs battled right back and tied the game up in the seventh, 4-4.  After the Pirates went down 1,2,3 in the seventh, the dawgs put up 2 in the eighth to go up 6-4.  Then in the ninth, thePitbulls brought in another run for insurance and Erik Kutz closed the show.  Final score: Pitbulls 7, Pirates 4.

After a few technical difficulties, the series finally resumed with the two of the league’s best pitchers on the mound - Jesse Campinelli for the Pitbulls, and Mike Kolesar for the Pirates.  The Pirates scored 1 in the first inning to take an early lead, but in the bottom of the inning, the dawgs sent 9 to the plate, bringing in 3 runs, making the score 3-1, Pitbulls.  The Pirates put up 1 in the third, narrowing the gap to 3-2.  The Pitbulls battled right back scoring 1 in the fourth to go up 4-2.  Jesse Campinelli went on to strike out 5 Pirates in a row, but gave up one run in the sixth to bring the score to 4-3.  The score remained the same until the eighth inning when the Pitbulls scored an insurance run to go up 5-3 for the final score  andfor the Pitbulls to take the league championship title.

The Division Champs were finally decided on Friday and Saturday. While the Paterson Phillies secured the North last Sunday, the other three divisions were not yet decided. The Middlesex Pirates edged out the Edison Cubs in a ten inning classic 8-7 on Friday night to claim the East title. Saturday saw the South Amboy Pitbulls sweep two from the BBQ Outlaws 7-0, 2-0 and that's how the West was Won. Then the NJ Bears outlasted the Somerville Giants 8-4 Saturday evening to take the South crown.

All this commotion set up our Championship contenders: Pitbulls and Pirates for the A League and Phillies versus Bears for the AA Title.

Chris Bartz nothched a game one win for the Bears. After his defense spotted the Phils a 3-0 lead in the first, Bartz held the Phils until the seventh, while the Bear offense put up a five spot in the second and added four more in the fourth. Brian Kelly added a two run homer in the fifth and the score stood at 11-3. The Phillies came back with four of their own in the seventh, but the Bears answered back with two in the bottom of the frame for the 13-7 final.

In the A League contest, the Pitbulls jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first, aided by a couple of errors on the corners. It remained 2-0 into the third. More details on this game will follow, but the Pitbulls took the opener 7-4.

Fall Ball season under way.  While some clubs finish their Summer playoff runs, a few others got things started. The defending champion Kearny White Sox swept the Beavers at the Milt, and the Montville Dirtbags downed the Gravediggers in straight sets in Washington. Room for two more teams! Lloyd Makes RVNABA History!

John Lloyd threw nine innings of hitless ball yesterday, and in so doing became the first RVNABA player to hurl two no-hitters! Nolan Ryan is feeling the heat. Lloyd's first came on April 20,2008 - a 13-0 shutout over the Bears. Yesterday's 9-1 victory came at the expense of the Monmouth Thunder.

Some fun facts about Llloyd's 2nd no-no:

It was the 15th in league history (since 1992)

It is only the third (or fourth) nine-inning no-hitter (Jay Roman 8/8/04 6-0 SunDevils over Black Sox, and Chris Bott 9/11/05 1-0 S.A.Yankees over White Sox were the others. Most league no-hitters were either scheduled 7-inn games or shortened due to mercy rule. Lloyd's first was 7 inn by mercy rule)

It is the third non-shutout no-hitter (Ken Heard 8/20/00 3-1 A's over Marlins, and Chris DelPreore 5/5/02 12-1 Rockies over Tides were the others)

Lloyd's accomplishments come in consecutive years and for two different clubs. The first was as a member of the eventual 2008 Champion Paterson Phillies. Yesterday's effort was for Las Aguilas in their inaugural year in the league.
