Rubidoux heads to Orange County
This Saturday the Rubidoux Cross Country teams travel to Irvine to participate in the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic at Woodbridge High School. This is a very fast course and should produce some great times. It is run by grade level on the boys side and the girls run Freshmen, Sophomore and Varsity groups. We are in the White Division on the schedule below. Bus Departure Time: 5:30am The bus will be leaving promptly at 5:30 am so please plan to be at the school by 5:20am to ensure that you are not late and get left behind. We need to leave on time to be sure that there is enough time for the team to walk the course and get a proper warm-up. AWARDS:

Falcons perform well at Fastback Shootout
The Rubidoux Falcons kicked off their 2009 season with the Fastback Shootout at Mt. SAC on Saturday. The course runs 2 of the 3 hills at the famed Mt. SAC course and is only 2.93 miles, but it provides a good early season challenge. The races are divided up by grade level and by school size. Freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors are all in different races and compete in two divisions: Division 1 and then everybody else. In our first race of the day, Junior girls, Sonia Lopez started off strong and was joined by teammates Mayte Gonzalez and Stephanie Gomez. The 3 girls steadily moved up through the packs and finished in 52nd (Mayte), 54th (Sonia) and 56th (Stephanie) places. Terrific races for first time runners! Teammate Analilia Ortiz was closing in on the trio ahead of her by the end of the race and finished in 78th place. In the Junior boys race Mueen Ghoury ran in a small group of 3 at the front of the field for the first half mile before settling into second place on the first hill. He easily finished in 2nd place with a personal record time, even though he has been fasting for Ramadan for the past 3 weeks. Marvin Nogueda had a major breakout performance in finishing 40th place to grab the last medal of the heat as he passed several runners in the last 400m. Imran Zaman ran his first cross country race and finished a respectable 62nd place while nursing an injured knee. The Sophomore boys race saw Rubidoux place two runners in the top 10. Angel Perez took more than 20 seconds off of his time from last year to place 5th while Antonio Sanchez took off a full minute to place 9th. David Garcia and Francisco Rojas mad big charges to the finish line but finished just out of the medals at 43rd and 46th. You never know what you are going to get out of freshmen, especially in their first race. Jenny Diaz started off very fast but then settled into her race pace quite well and came across the line in 27th place to capture a medal and run the 2nd fastest Rubidoux girl time of the day. On the boys side, Juan Salas ran with the leaders for the first half mile but dropped back a little on the first hill. He continued to keep his sights on the front runners and stayed in the top 10 the whole race finishing in 5th place as the #4 Rubidoux boy. Jair Castillo was a little unsure of what to expect in his first high school race but with steady training and hard work over the summer he made the most of his first competition. He finished in 33rd place to bring home some hardware! The schedule may have saved the best for last. With only 2 girls representing the entire Rubidoux senior class in cross country, Dulce Pliego and Ana Lopez had something to prove. Dulce got out quickly and settled into the front 20 girls trying to hold on to the very fast pace up front. Running with a purpose, trying to prove herself worthy of being the Rubidoux #1 runner she finished in 19th place with a time that was 27 seconds faster than last years top Rubidoux girl (who by the way went on to finish in the top 5 at every league meet of the 2008 season). Ana Lopez started more conservatively but steadily made her way through the field of runners and climbed all the way to 35th place by passing runners in bunches during the last 400m. Overall, 8 of the 16 runners came home with medals and we had 4 runners place in the top 10 of their races. It was a very solid start to the 2009 competitive season and showed that we are definitely on our way towards our goals. Rubidoux race results are shown below.
