Baseball 5 & 6 - Rules of Play
First is to have fun.
Players at this age need to learn the game correctly. They also need to be better prepared to play at the next age group. This will increase the boys’ skill level as well as strengthening the league in the long run.
At bat
•Coach pitch, 5 pitches, after that, the tee. If you have a boy who you know needs the tee to start out with, you can set that up when he gets to bat.
• Outs will count. If an out is made, the player must sit down. 3 outs per side. After 3 outs, teams switch sides.
• Balls must be in fair territory for the batter to go to first
• Foul balls WILL count in the boys pitch count.
• Every player on a team bats per inning OR 3 outs, whichever comes first.
• Last batter of inning DOES NOT round the bases.
• Every boy on the team MUST get 2 at bats per game.
Running the bases
• No advancing on over throws
• All runners are to stop once the ball is back in the infield. It does not need to be under control, just make it to the infield. It’s up to the coaches to make sure the boys are throwing the ball to the correct base.
• Batters can advance as many bases as possible on hits. We are not doing “station to station” base running.
Fielding
• 4 outfielders, 1st base, 2nd base, shortstop, 3rd base, 1 pitcher. Up to the coach to rotate boys in and out of the field.
• It’s not necessary for each boy to play each position every game.
• The minimum numbers of boys on the bench at a time is 2. If a team has only 1 bench player, he is to be put into the field as well.
• Player substitutions are done when the teams switch sides.
