High School umpire ejects fans watching the game:
Remember at the beginning of the season we had all players and coaches sign how players and coaches should behave during a game?  Guess in some states the fans need to sign something too. Check it out from YAHOO news.

You make the call!

ROSL Umpire
Think you have what it takes to be a big time ROSL umpire? Can you "walk the walk" and not trip over the chalk? Are you willing to put down that cold beverage and raise your arm to the sky to call "Strike three!!!! on the neighbor's kid?  Check back Friday to see if you made the correct call.

Wednesday July 1, 2009 - Question
In another "Kaline Klassic" King Cleaners is up in the top of the 2nd inning.  The always dangerous Zack Thomas leads off the inning with
a sharp single to left field putting him at 1st base.  The next batter, TJ Tekip, takes Justin Simon of Alpha Auto to a 2-2 count.  Manager Tekip trying to stay out of a double play flashes the steal sign to Zack on 1st base.  Justin Simon delivers inside to the plate where TJ Tekip swings and misses, however, the ball brushes TJ's arm, the catcher catches the ball and fires down to 2nd base where the tag was put on Zack trying to steal 2nd base before Zack reached the base.  You call....

(a) 2 outs.  1 out for the strike out and 1 out for the tag on Zack
(b) 1 out. 1 out for the strike out.  Even though Zack was tagged by the throw from the catcher he is safe at 2nd base since once the
ball hit TJ it was a "dead ball".  Since Zack was on his way to 2nd base prior to the "dead ball" he is entitled to the base
(c) 1 out. 1 out for the strike out.  Zack needs to return to 1st base since once the ball hit TJ it was a "dead ball"
(d) 0 out. TJ was hit by the pitch, therefore, TJ is awarded 1st base and Zack is awarded 2nd base.  Hit batter.

Not a tough call for a seasoned ROSL umpire as yourself as, of course, the correct call is?

Monday June 29, 2009 - Question and the correct call
As the lights come on over Worden #4 another Harwell classic between R.O. Lions Club and Oakland Utilities begins.  You call "play ball"
as James Greenway of R.O. Lions Club digs in waiting on the first pitch from Oakland Utilities' Randal Frank.  On a 1-1 count James "crushes" a line drive past 1st base into fair territory, however, the spin of the ball takes the ball into foul territory but not out of play.  Thinking the ball was foul spectator Jack Novak picks up the ball and fires it back to Randal who is standing on the mound.  In your opinion even if Jack had not picked up the ball James would have made it to 2nd base easily.  You...

(a) call "dead ball" and award James 1st base.  Once the ball was picked up by Jack the play ended and runners can only advance to the next available base.  It does not matter if you think James would have made 2nd base without Jack picking up the ball
(b) call "dead ball" and award James 2nd base due to fan interference
(c) call "dead ball" and award James 3rd base.  Ground rule double (2 bases) and fan interference (1 base)
(d) call "dead ball" and James bats again with a same 1-1 count

The correct call is (b).  In your judgement James would have made 2nd base so you place him there.  This is not a Ground Rule Double since the ball did not go out of play.  Of course you did have a long chat with Jack about staying back.

Wednesday June 24, 2009 - Question and the correct call
The top of the 4th inning comes around with JTJ Illustrating coming to bat.  According to the lineup card the scheduled batting order is Mark Ruhle, Ken Vincent, Dave Johnson, and John Milan.  Due to a mix-up Dave Johnson comes to the plate and on the first pitch lines a single into left field.  The manager of American Classic Kitchens calls time and brings this to your attention.  You..

(a) call the batter out for batting out of order.  1 out.  Next batter would be Mark Ruhle, then Ken Vincent, then John Milan
(b) runner stays at 1st base with Mark Ruhle's turn to bat.  Next would be Ken Vincent, then John Milan since Dave Johnson has already batted.  0 outs
(c) runner stays at 1st base with John Milan's turn to bat.  Mark Ruhle and Ken Vincent cannot bat this turn since Dave Johnson batted out of order.  0 outs
(d) Mark Ruhle takes Dave Johnson's place on 1st base with the next batters being Ken Vincent then John Milan.  Dave Johnson would not bat this turn since he has already batted.  0 outs

The correct call is (c).  Once the ball is in play that batter is "officially" at bat and the batting line up resumes from there.
