ROCKINGHAM VIPERS PRESS RELEASE

Rockingham Vipers

Press Release 30th of April 2014

The Rockingham Vipers get "their guy" in the form of Lane Honda!

The Rockingham Vipers are pleased to announce the appointment of Lane Honda as Head Coach for the upcoming season of 2014/2015.

Lane Honda is coming into the position after the team was left with no head coach after Phil Mullins resigned from the position early in the 2013/14 season, leaving star QB Ben Gastarov as the player coach for the remainder of the season.

Everyone at the club is buzzing after the announcement of Lane earlier today. Lane brings a massive wealth of experience not only from within Gridiron West but from his time playing in the states where he was the League All-Star QB for Baldwin High School.

Lane has just finished being a part of the WA Raiders team as QB Coach where he was able to develop a strong bond with the Raiders/Vipers QB B.Gastarov as well as other senior Vipers players.

Lanes experience is not just at a local level, he was also a coach on the Australian U’19’s as the Offense Coordinator.

Earlier today Coach Honda had the following to say;

"I am very excited to be part of an already successful organization. I look forward to working with all the players and members of the Club"

"I have high expectations of the club on and off the field and I will endeavour to do my best to help the club move forward and strengthen the Viper tradition"

With the Vipers only just missing out on the state championship last season, the club is confident with Lane Honda at helm they are putting themselves in the best position possible to take the next step and add another Championship to their trophy cabinet.

2013/14 Grand Final and End of Season Awards

The Rockingham Vipers finished another successful season with their 11th appearance in the Gridiron West Championship Game. Playing arch-enemy the South Perth Blitz, it was always going to be a tough day for the Vipers. The Blitz offence gave the Vipers defense a very tough day on the back of solid QB play – both running and passing. The Vipers did manage to keep the game close until late in the match when the Blitz where able to capitalize on the Vipers taking risks in an attempt to steal the victory. The final score was 44-28 in favor of the Blitz.

The Viper acquitted themselves well on the field, fighting hard until the final whistle, but it just wasn’t meant to be this season. The match also saw the final match being players by long time Vipers Chris Tracy and Matt James. Chris spent 14 seasons leading the Vipers defense, and Matt six.

The Vipers also held their annual awards night, seeing the season top performers awarded for a season that had a lot of ups and downs, but also displayed the heart the Vipers are famous for.

The winner on the night where -

Viper of the year - Nate Lansdell

Team MVP - Kieren Lansdell

Offensive MVP - Nate Lansdell

The Phil Mullan award - Chris Martin

Rookie of the year - Lanu Kennach

Frolic of the year - Bojan Vucic

Bagooki- Velibor Tasic/Roberto Rojas / Brian Harwood

The Vipers also inducted our 5th life member on the night. Added to Viper hall of fame was Chris Tracy, a 14 year veteran in the maroon & gold a defensive captain since 2004, he was also a WA Raider and Australian Outback rep and served as a club board member. Chris has been a crucial figure in rebuilding the club from 2004 until present day.

Vipers Season At The Half Way Mark

At just past the half way mark for the season, the Vipers find them self in a position to comfortably make the finals – and possibly even push for first seed. The top four positions on the ladder had broken away and opened up a two game lead on the rest of the league with five games remaining. This means that the Steelers, Jets and Wolverines will all require teams to start dropping games to have a hope of finals football.

With that being said, it really means that there is little left to decide except the pecking order come the finals. As it stands the Saints and Blitz hold down the top two seeds, with the Vipers third and the Broncos forth. The Vipers and Blitz play every other team in the top four before the end of the season, and the Saints beat the Broncos this past weekend. If either the Vipers of Blitz can go undefeated during this five game stretch, they will claim the minor premiership, and the Broncos still have a shot at it too if any of the teams above them falter down the stretch. So far this season the Saints, who are currently in the driver’s seat for top seed in the playoffs, have only dropped one game – and that was to the 3rd placed Vipers. The Saint shave also defeated the Broncos twice and the Blitz once, while the Broncos and Blitz have both had victories over the Vipers.

Currently the Saints are 6-1, the Blitz 5-1-1, the Vipers 5-2 and the Broncos are 4-2-1, meaning it will be a very tight race to the finals. It also means that every game is of great importance come the final seeding for the play offs at the end of the season. Make sure you get down and back the Vipers and they push for another finals berth and Grand Final appearance in February.

Vipers open the season in impressive fashion

The Rockingham Vipers ensured that the Claremont Jets still don’t have their names on the Ron Mullin Trophy on Saturday night. The Vipers opened their season with a 50-6 defeat of the Claremont Jets in the Mullin/Hardwood Memorial Match. The Vipers took the ball from the opening kick off and calmly marched the ball down the field for the opening score. The Jets replied straight away, returning the ensuing kick off a kick off. But that would be the last time the Jets would threaten the Vipers.

The Viper took a 36-6 lead into half time, on the back of power running from Nate Lansdell, three touch down passes from Ben Gastrov to Bojan Vucic and a smothering defense that refuse to allow the Jets to move the ball. After the half, the pace of the game slowed somewhat and the Viper ran out easy winners.

Next week the Vipers take on the Perth Blitz in a semi-final rematch from last season. The game kicks off at 4:45 at Arena, Joondalup.

Viper’s Open the Season With The Ron Mullin/Brad Hardwood Tribute Match

The Rockingham Vipers will open the 2013/14 season this weekend with the Ron Mullin/Brad Harwood Tribute Match, played annually between the Vipers and the Claremont Jets. The match will not only be a battle to get the season under way in the best possible manner, but the two teams will also compete for the Ron Mullin Trophy and the game MVP will be awarded the Brad Harwood Medal.

Ron Mullin was a huge part of the Vipers establishing their team identity and played a big role in the team until he passed away. Brad Harwood grew up around the Vipers from a very young age, with his father playing seniors and Brad himself being a stand out junior. Brad was tragically killed in a workplace accident in 2008. The match also sees the return of Viper’s mentor Phil Mullin, after a two year hiatus. The game will be played at Success Regional Sporting Complex, Hammond Road, Success at 7:00pm.
