ROCHESTER — On Saturday, Rochester Slammers pitcher Corinne Baita threw a gem for a win over the New England Diamond Gems. On Sunday, it was more of the same, just a little less suspenseful.
Baita struck out six, walked none and scattered five hits to lead the Slammers to a 4-1 win over the Gems on Sunday, earning the Slammers the championship of the New Hampshire Amateur Softball Association girls 18U Class A fast pitch state tournament at Roger Allen Park.
A day earlier, Baita was the winning pitcher in a 1-0 decision over the same team, but that game wasn't decided until the bottom of the seventh inning.
"I didn't expect us to get up that quick, that early," Baita said about the championship final. "It took us so long last game. It was definitely a relief to have four runs after just two innings."
On Sunday, the Slammers struck for a pair of runs in the first inning and two more in the second and let Baita take it the rest of the way. The Gems got to Baita a little bit in the top of the fourth inning with three hits, but Baita got out of the inning with only one run scored.
The Slammers went 3-0 in the tournament and advanced to the regional tournament in two weeks in Leominster, Mass.
"These kids have been together for quite a few years," Slammers coach Dana Hamel said about his team. "We haven't had much time to practice this summer, but they still remember all the little things. We can make (a little) noise, and we're good to go."
It was the second game of the day for the Diamond Gems, who had to win the losers' bracket final in the morning before earning the right to face the fresh and rested Slammers in the final. Not only that, but had the Gems prevailed against the Slammers, it would have forced a winner-take-all game that would have been held immediately afterward.
"Our biggest goal is to not get down," Hamel said. "We seem to get a little nervous when someone scores a run first, there's a little bit of pressure. I think they're finally getting it. They're relaxed. We try to keep it nice and loose."
The Slammers made it easy on themselves Sunday. Unlike the day before, Rochester wasted no time getting on the board. Portsmouth High School standout Bri Keenan led off with a single, then Jenny MacArthur reached on a bunt. Mary Nelson bunted the pair into scoring position, then Spaulding star Paige Cormier doubled to shallow left field to score Keenan and MacArthur.
It was 2-0 after one. In the second inning, Ali Stanley led off with a walk, then moved to second on a single by Baita. Dover High School standout Megan Bolduc came up with a sacrifice bunt, the first of two for her on the day. Keenan, the reigning Division II player of the year, was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Then MacArthur turned a lengthy at-bat into a ground ball through the hole into left field to score Stanley and Baita. The Slammers had a relatively comfortable 4-0 lead.
"I kept fouling off balls, waiting for the one that I wanted," MacArthur said. "It finally came. It was right down the middle and I just hit it as hard as I could."
Baita continued to mow down the Gems. She retired the side in order in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings, and at one point retired 10 batters in a row and 11 out of 12. In the fourth, the Gems got three base hits up the middle to cut the lead to 4-1, but Baita retired the next three batters on a fielder's choice, a ground out and a strikeout to end the threat.
Baita also had strong defense behind her. Nelson made six putouts at third base and Keenan made five at shortstop. Neither team committed an error.
The Gems, based in Nashua, finished the tournament at 2-2 and will also advance to the regional tournament. Gems pitcher Michaela McGowan went the distance with one strikeout and a walk.
"We've faced the Slammers since they were 10 (years old)," Gems coach Jim Rines said. "It's a great rivalry."

PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth's Brianna Keenan will attend Tufts University and play softball and field hockey.
She was accepted early decision. She has been a four-year starter on the Portsmouth High School softball team as leadoff hitter, outfielder and shortstop. Keenan was a co-captain her junior and seniors year, winning back-to-back Class I state championships in 2008 and 2009.
She was a first-team all-state selection and two-time first team Foster's Dream Team choice. Keenan has also played summer travel softball for the Rochester Slammers since 2006 as their shortstop and leadoff hitter. The Slammers are defending ASA 16U state champions and have won the ASA New England regional championship three of the last five years.
Keenan has played field hockey for the Clippers for four years as both a goalie and a defender. She was a second team all-state pick and a high honorable mention Foster's Dream Team pick. She plays USFH for the Cape Ann Coalition Field Hockey Club out of Byfield, Mass., having played in the National Field Hockey Festival and the National Indoor Tournament.
Brianna will be playing softball for coach Cheryl Milligan at Tufts. The softball team is consistently ranked nationally in the top 10 of Division III. She also intends to play field hockey for coach Tina McDavitt, whose program has also been consistently ranked in the top 10 nationally.

ROCHESTER — With her parents and coaches proudly looking on, Spaulding High School's Paige Cormier signed her letter of intent to attend Saint Anselm College Tuesday afternoon.
The Red Raiders' left-handed pitching ace will receive an 80 percent scholarship to play softball for the Hawks and coach Greg Joseph.
"It's just a really big relief to know the process is over," she said. "I feel like I can breathe now."
Before choosing St. A's, Cormier had narrowed her choices down to Southern Connecticut, St. Michael's and Saint Anselm. It was an overnight trip to the school that eventually helped seal the deal.
"I got to hang out with some girls on the team and get an idea of what living there would be like," she said. "It was a lot of fun. There's a relaxing feel about the campus I really like."
Cormier has been simply dominant for the Red Raiders over the past two seasons, recording 214 strikeouts in only 171.1 innings, and earning back-to-back first team all-state honors in Class L. Her earned run average was a paper thin 0.77 in 2009 and 0.95 last season.
"An inner drive to succeed and be the best she can be is something that sets Paige apart from others," Spaulding softball coach Sheila Colson said. "She always wants to win, and she always wants to do her best. If she doesn't, it motivates her. She's a dominant athlete in terms of physical skills, but she's also very determined."
Along with her parents, Cormier credited Colson and longtime pitching/summer coach Dana Hamel for helping her reach this point.
"Coach Hamel's taught me so much over the years," Cormier said. "He kind of took me under his wing when I was younger, and that really prepared me for high school."
Cormier began working with Hamel when she was just eight years old.
"I was with my daughter at Roger Allen Park, and Paige expressed an interest in learning how to pitch," Hamel said. "We started working together a couple nights a week, and now, 10 years later, we're still working together. It's been a lot of fun — she's a great kid."
Hamel coaches the Rochester Slammers U16 team. Cormier has played for the Slammers since she was eight, including a number of state and regional championship teams.
"Paige loves being on the mound in big situations," he said. "She loves challenges and she loves competition. I'm not surprised she's going to be playing at the Division II level. She works hard and she's very dedicated."
With improved strength and conditioning, Hamel believes Cormier will thrive at the next level. Cormier also feels she'll be successful at Saint A's, but knows plenty of challenges await.
"The competition in Division II is very good," Cormier said. "The players are talented all through the lineup, and I'm going to have to deal with certain things I've never dealt with before. It's going to be a challenge, but I'm looking forward to it. I'll have to step up my game up."
Cormier is also looking forward to the her senior season with the Red Raiders. She's currently working on two new pitches — a dropball and a screwball — and hopes to add them to her repertoire (fastball, change-up, curveball, rise) this spring.
"I really think we can make it to the final four this year," Cormier said. "We've had disappointing finishes the past two years, so hopefully we can learn from that and take another step this season."
"It's hard not to love (softball) once you start playing," she said. "Your teammates become like family and everyone works toward the same goal. It's nice to be part of something bigger than yourself."

For every bump
For every bruise
For the desire to win
For refusing to lose
For the feeling you feel
When the job is well done
For the tears that are cried
When the game is not won
For getting knocked down
And getting back on your feet
For the drive to be better
For rejecting defeat
For the "impossible" goals
For achieving a dream
For beating the odds
And being part of a team
For the blood, sweat, and tears
And the hardwork every day
For the love of the game
That's why you play.

10. Offering to let the other team call the toss.
09. Players or coaches that applaud nice plays by players on the other team.
08. Teams that leave their dugout cleaner for the next team than they found it.
07. Coaches that say good call to an umpire on a close call that went against them.
06. Catchers that go out of their way to pick a bat up for the girl that just fouled it off.
05. Coaches/players or parents that go up to a tournament director that say good things about umpires especially after a loss.
04. Players that offer their time to help coach or work with a younger team or player.
03. Players that sprint as fast as they can on a routine pop-up. (Instead of feeling sorry for themselves and pouting as they jog half speed to first)
02. Players and coaches that are willing to take the blame when something goes wrong instead of always having to point fingers.
01. Players that cheer for their teammates when they are role or bench players. (These kids will be successful in life!) It is hard to not feel sorry for yourself but from what I have seen the kids that handle this well will be WINNERS!

One day the devil called up St. Peter and challenged him to a softball game.
"Okay," St. Peter said, "But you know we have all the great players up here in Heaven."
"You'll lose anyway," the devil said.
"Don't be foolish," St. Peter replied. "We're sure to win. Why we have Lisa Fernandez, Cat Osterman, Jennie Finch, Michelle Smith, Stacy Nuveman and Dot Richardson.
"I know," the devil interrupted, "But we have all the umpires!"

I used to have a regular life. (Actually, many of my friends say that sentence should say, "I used to have a life", period.)
It doesn't really seem that long ago. Then I became a Travelball parent.
I used to think anything over $40 was an exorbitant price for a Softball bat. Now the contents of my Daughter's equipment bag are worth more than everything else in the house -- including clothes, jewelry, watches, and my laptop computer.
I used to be one of the leaders in my field of work. I still am. (You have to keep a good paycheck coming in if you want to support a travelball habit!)
I used to think a double-header was a long day at the ball field. Now after two games we're just getting warmed up.
I used to look for little restaurants that served seafood fresh off the boat. Now I'm a connoisseur of nachos and hot dogs and my kids rate a city by the quality of a tournaments snack bar!
Sunflower seeds used to be something I would see at a store and wonder who would eat those things? Now I don't feel comfortable leaving the house with out a bag in my pocket.
My lawn used to be like a carpet. It was green, mowed, trimmed, fertilized, and watered. Now I have two big bare spots fifty feet apart and dents in my garage door from fastballs that got away!
My car used to draw admiring looks and comments. It was clean and waxed and shined and Armor-All'd. Now it only draws attention when it wins the "dirtiest car in the parking lot" prize.
I used to have a garage, now I have an indoor batting area.
My friends and I used to spend Monday mornings talking about a round of golf or movie we had just seen. Now I bore them to death with detailed play-by-play descriptions of five or six low-scoring ball games.
We used to sit and talk for hours. We still do-- however, now it's to keep the driver awake when we're headed home late Sunday evening after a tournament.
My summer casual wardrobe used to be made up of color-coordinated polo shirts, cool cottons in bright colors, and the occasional "aloha" shirt. Now I have a closet full of T-shirts that have Tournament Names on the front and competing teams on the back.
We used to spend our summer vacation relaxing on the beach or visiting family. Now we hit the road with 20 of our closest friends in a caravan that could rival some small town parades.
I used to be concerned that I would fall into the trap of living my life through my kid. Now I know that I'm privileged to live my life WITH my kid!!!
Yes, I'm a Travel Ball Parent, what could be better!
