WSJFL Varsity Super Bowl – November 15, 2010

Rochester Redskin vs Farmington Rockets

Division foes Rochester (9-0-1) and Farmington (9-1-0) met in the WSJFL Super Bowl three weeks after their divisional showdown which saw the Redskins come from behind in the second half for a 44-40 victory. Rochester’s running game, lead by great blocking from their offensive line, proved to be too much for the Rockets. They ran over the Rockets for 384 yards with C.J. Bias carrying a majority of load with 18 carries for 268 yards. Joe Cox provided for another 84 yards on the ground plus 2 catches for 96 all purpose yards. Defensively, Josh Bowling lead the way with 11 tackles, 8 assists and 2 sacks while Davis Strobridge provided his usual highlights with several crushing tackles. The Redskin defenders were in the Rocket backfield all afternoon and Rochester won 43-25.

The Redskins scored early with a 56 yard drive on their first possession. Noah Beck got the touchdown on a 7-yard run. Their second possession started on their own 22 after Farmington’s second punt and a couple of plays later Bias would dazzle the crowd with a 68-yard run giving Rochester a 12-0 lead. The Rochester defense would again hold the Rockets who failed to gain a first down in the first quarter.

Rochester had an opportunity to score again early in the second quarter when Clifford Baxter took a pitch from Bias and tossed it down field to a wide open receiver. The ball fell off his fingertips and then, Farmington would hold on fourth down giving the Rockets their first boost of the game. They responded quickly moving the ball inside the 10 for a first and goal at the 5. Farmington got on the scoreboard on 4th down with a 1-yard quarterback sneak. The Rockets maintained their momentum forcing Rochester to punt and would score again on a reverse pass to Moore from 25 yards out. Trailing now, 13-12, Rochester needed to regain the edge and they did when quarterback Justin Allor capped a 48-yard drive by connecting with Noah Beck for a 16 yard touchdown pass. Next it was the defense’s turn and they too came up big with a Derek Willis interception and the half would close with Rochester leading 20-13.

Rochester started the second half with the ball and quickly moved into the red zone. Farmington’s Peterson intercepted an Allor pass at the one yet the Redskin defense would hold the Rockets deep in their own territory and force a punt. Rochester again moved the ball from their 45 to deep into Rocket territory and this time Bias would score on an 11-yard run giving Rochester a 15 point lead. The Rockets were not going to quit however and hit back with 75 yard run. Cox made a touchdown saving tackle inside the 10 yet Westbrook would score a couple of plays later to pull the Rockets back within 9 points.

Farmington could not slow down the Redskin run game as Rochester began the fourth quarter by finishing off a 65 yard drive with Bias scoring his third touchdown from six yard out through a gapping whole. With a 35-19 lead the defense held strong. A Brett Jacobs sack on fourth down with 2:27 to play sealed the victory. Each team would score again, Rochester’s Cox on a 14- yard run and with 23 seconds left Farmington’s Craven caught a 48 yard touchdown pass. This Super Bowl victory would give several of the career Rochester players, in their final game wearing the Redskin uniform, their third WSJFL championship!

Playoff Round 2 (November 8, 2009) Varsity vs. Redford Rangers

Varsity - Rochester 40, Redford Rangers 23

The Rochester Redskin varsity squad advanced to the WSJFL Super Bowl where they will meet the Farmington Rockets who defeated the Lakes Area Hawks 14-13 on Saturday. Rochester was able to dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Justin Allor completed 10 passes for 215 yards and three touch downs with Josh Bowling catching 6 of those for 114 yards and two scores. C.J. Bias rushed for 138 yards on 15 carriers and Noah Beck racked up over 100 all purpose yards. The final score was 40-23 on this warm and sunny fall afternoon.

The Redskins got an early wake up call. After winning the toss they received the opening kick off and failed to get a first down. The Rangers would score with their first possession on a 52 yard run (kick good) and take an 8-0 lead. As they did the previous week, the Redskin offense responded with a 61 yard touch down drive. Bias had gains of 34 and 16 yards and Joe Cox capped the drive with a 15 yard scamper for the touchdown (Cox kick) to tie the score at eight. Now it was the defense’s turn and after a Cox tackle for loss Redford was forced to punt after only three plays. The Redskins began their next drive at their own 19 yard line. Allor completed a 40 yard pass to Bowling and, after gaining 3 yards on a fourth and one to keep the drive going, he hit Beck for a 33 yard score (PAT missed) and a 14-8 lead.

The second quarter belonged to the defenses with neither team able to move the ball consistently. Davis Strobridge led the defense with several great hits and Beck batted away a couple of long passes keeping the Rangers from making a serious threat. Late in the quarter Rochester would have one more chance to put points on the board. From their 39 Bias caught a screen pass and gained 48 yards. A few plays later Allor hit Bowling over the middle for an 8 yard score (Cox kick) with 29 seconds left in the half and Rochester took the 22-8 lead into the half.

Redford tried going to the pass again to start the third and Strobridge picked one off at the 50 and returned it to the Ranger 12. From there is was all Bias gaining 10 yards and then, breaking two tackles in the backfield and scoring from the two (PAT missed). With a 28-8 lead and the top eight on the sideline Redford’s size would prove too much for Rochester’s smaller defensive unit as they scored with a 57 yard run (PAT good -1) to narrow the gap to 28-15. Rochester would come right back and after a 38 yard Bias run put them in the red zone Allor found Bowling for his second touchdown catch (PAT missed). Trailing by 19 the Rangers went back to work on the smaller Redskin defense and scored again on a 46 yard pass (Kick good) to pull within 11 (34-23).

The fourth quarter began with Rochester grinding out yards on the ground and time off the clock. Cox, Noah and Bias consistently picked up good yards behind great blocking from the offensive line and sheer determination. They moved the ball to the one and on first and goal Allor followed his line into the end zone (PAT no good) to cap off a 9 minute, 63 yard drive. With little time left the Rangers tried to score quickly but Beck intercepted 5 yards deep in the end zone and returned it for what appeared to be a 105 yard touchdown. An illegal use of hands brought the ball back to the Redskin 26 yet all that was left was for Allor to take a knee twice and the Rochester Redskins would be super bowl bound with the 40-23 victory.

Playoff Round 1 (November 1, 2009) Varsity vs. Plymouth-Canton Steelers

Varsity - Rochester 34, Plymouth-Canton 19

The Rochester Redskin varsity squad turned in a stellar defensive performance which, when combined with their high power running attack, was too much for the Plymouth Canton Steelers. The Redskins advanced to the next round of the playoffs with their 34- 19 victory.

The Steelers hushed the enthusiastic crowd by returning the opening kick off for a score and after failing to make the PAT led 6-0. The Redskin offense responded and C.J. Bias’ 55 yard run set up a first and goal at the four yard line. Noah Beck carried the ball into the end zone from there and Joe Cox’s kick made the score 8-6. The Steelers showed life early when their speedy running backs were able to get outside on Redskin defense. Clifford Baxter and Derek Willis made touchdown saving tackles as the Steelers moved the ball inside the ten yard line for a first and goal. The defense stiffened and on fourth down Davis Strobridge sacked the quarterback and Rochester took over on their own 13 yard line. A Justin Allor to Joshua Bowling pass moved the ball out to the 41 and a couple of plays later Bias broke through the line and scampered 66 yards for a touchdown (PAT missed) and a 14-6 lead.

The Rochester defense adjusted and dominated the second quarter. After exchanging possessions the Steelers had the ball on the Redskin 36. Strobridge got his second sack forcing a passing situation and Noah Beck intercepted to give the Redskins the ball on their own 16 yard line. They moved the ball out to the 34 and Bias struck again with another 66-yard touchdown run (Cox kick). As the half was winding down the Redskin defense continued to contain the Steelers running game and Strobridge’s third sack would close the door and the first half with Rochester leading 22-6.

Rochester got the ball to start the third quarter and quickly moved the ball across mid field. C.J. Bias scored his third touchdown from 30 yards out with the help of Bowling’s downfield blocking (PAT missed) and the Redskins upped their lead to 28-6. With the 22 point lead the top eight would have to sit yet the fired up Redskin’s would continue to dominate and force the Steelers to turn it over on downs.

Plymouth Canton had the ball again to start the fourth quarter and a Brett Jacobs sack would force another turn over on downs at the Steeler 35. With strong running by Nick Rangos and some heads up play by Brendan McMahon the Redskins moved the ball to the six. McMahon hit Stephen Nichols over the middle for the score (PAT missed) and a 34-6 lead. The Steelers found some life by returning the ensuing kick off back for their second touchdown. With their next possession the Steelers moved the ball to the Redskin one yet were again denied by a McMahon interception. With the ball deep in their territory Derek Willis was able to break a tackle in the backfield and gain 19 yards before the Redskins would turn the ball over on downs. The Steelers scored their first offensive touchdown with under three minutes to play and closed the gap to 34-19. It was too late and after recovering the onside kick Rochester would run out the clock.
