Little Raiders move to 3-0
ROCHESTER — The Rochester Little Raiders remain undefeated after beating previously unbeaten Exeter, 8-0, Saturday night.
Little Raider coach Russ Stickles knew before the game that this would be a defense first game. "We watched Exeter last week and knew coming in we had to step up defensively to beat these guys." That's exactly what the Raiders did.
In the first half neither team could score, although the Raiders twice were inside the Exeter 30 only to turn the ball over on downs.
Big tackles from Howard Patch and Nick Bennett forced Exeter to throw the ball and Josh Lapointe came up with two big interceptions. The half ended with no score from either team.
The second opened with a flurry as the Red Raiders began with an on-side kick that was recovered by Patch. The Little Raiders chewed up the clock before Blake Barbin punched in what would be the winning touchdown at 3:24 of the third quarter.
Defense was the name of the game from there. Exeter was shut down on a lengthy drive and opted to punt. With the Raiders on their own 9 they only got the ball out to the 43. Barbin boomed a punt to the Exeter 15.
Exeter seemed to be driving when in a fourth-and-7 situation. They struck with a 15-yard pass play to Hunter Long for a first down. On the ensuing play with 1:17 left Exeter QB Jackson Allen was picked off by Lapointe icing the game for the Little Raiders.
The Little Raiders are back in action Saturday night at 6 p.m. to take on Londonderry.

Little Raiders defeat Timberlane Tornadoes
Thursday, September 22, 2011
ROCHESTER — The Rochester Little Raiders improved to 2-0 this past Saturday night with a big win against Timberlane 28-26 in a rematch of last year's Seacoast Junior Football League championship.
The Raiders came out fast and jumped into the lead on their second possession when Josh Lapointe scampered 68 yards on a sweep just 2:41 into the first quarter. Blake Barbin ran in the conversion for an 8-0 lead.
In the second quarter, after a strong defensive stand, Lapointe struck again with another sweep of 48 yards to put the Raiders on the 2-yard line. Fullback Howard Patch finished the drive with a plunge and a 14-0 lead.
Timberlane righted the ship when big running back Tyler Fury took the ensuing kickoff 82 yards for the touchdown to cut it to 14-6.
Not to be outdone, Barbin returned the Tornadoes kickoff 66 yards and Patch again punched it in from 11 yards out to make it 20-6.
The Tornadoes weren't done, droving the ball 72 yards in the last 5:30 minutes of the half culminating in a Fury 3-yard dive to cut it to 20-12 at the half.
The second half saw the Tornadoes come back as quarterback Kyle Burns completed a 26-yard pass to Alex Licata in the third and Fury went 35 yards in the fourth for touchdowns to take a 26-20 lead.
The Raiders' Barbin got the Raiders going again with a 57-yard touchdown run to regain the lead, 28-26.
The Raiders seemingly were driving to clinch the win, but fumbled on the Tornadoes' 9 with 6:48 to play.
Fury and the Tornadoes drive the length of the field and with nine seconds to play Fury went off tackle for the apparent game-winning 2-yard plunge, only to be driven back by a swarming Red Raider defense as time ran out.
The Raiders are back in action next Saturday at 6 p.m. to take on undefeated Exeter at Roger Allen Park.

Little Raiders win opener
Coming off a championship season, the Rochester Little Raider football team knows every team is gunning for them. Saturday night saw the Little Raiders beat the Winnacunnet Little Warriors, 28-22, in Hampton.
The Raiders came out guns blazing in the form of Dylan Boston, who scored on a 52-yard sweep on his first touch of the football just: 33 seconds into the game. On a pitch to the right, Boston just out ran by all Warrior defenders to the end zone putting the Raiders up 6-0.
On the ensuing series, the Warriors punted and Boston took the return 77 yards into the Warrior end zone making it 12-0 less than three minutes into the game.
It looked as though the Raiders would just run over the Warriors when, after a fumble recovery, the Little Raiders completed a 41-yard pass and then Blake Barbin carried three Warriors into the end zone to put the Raiders up 20-0, 40 seconds into the second quarter.
The Little Warriors cut the lead to 20-6 at the half.
The second half opened with the Warriors seizing control and scoring twice to take a 22-20 lead.
The Little Raiders greained their form and took the lead when Barbin led them down the field, culminating the 12-play drive with a 15-yard touchdown run putting the Raiders ahead for good.
The Rochester back in action Saturday night a Roger Allen field when they take on Timberlane at 7 p.m.

All future raiders should be ready and in shape for the start of practice in August .One of the difficulties we face as coaches is picking the jv and varsity rosters, we only have a short time to place you and the kids that show up in shape have a big advantage over those who play video games all summer, with the UNH camp and the Spaulding camp, which is inviting middle schoolers for the first time, plus the running you should be doing on your own, there are no excuses. If we are going to repeat as champions it is up to you to put in the effort. Contact me asap so I can get your name and phone number and keep you informed this summer leading up to our first practice.

Little Raiders clinch SNHFL title
By PETE BARKER
Democrat Sports Correspondent
ROCHESTER Winning the Southern New Hampshire Football League championship has become a habit for the Rochester Little Raiders.
Saturday night on their home field at Roger Allen Park, the No. 1 Raiders picked up their third consecutive title with a 30-12 win over a formidable Exeter Seahawks club to finish off an 8-1 season. The Seahawks, seeded third in the playoffs, completed a fine 6-3 campaign. They lost to the Raiders and Londonderry during the season.
The Raiders' road to victory was an offense that produced 340 yards, 310 rushing, while holding the Seahawks to 151 yards, 106 on the ground. Exeter completed only one of 11 passes.
"Overall I was impressed with the defense," said Raiders coach Jim MacNevin. "They're a good passing team. I felt the pressure was good on the quarterback and we were in a man to man coverage all night. That created a lot of problems. As a whole the defense stepped up and was able to bring pressure. The key was controlling the ball and defensively being able to shut their offense down."
"They're a well-coached team, fundamentally sound and they play hard," Seahawks coach Bob Healy said. "We lost to a better team, but I'm proud of my guys. They hung in there and played tough."
Raider quarterback Jack MacNevin (6 carries, 60 yards, 2-for-3 passing, 30 yards) scored twice and threw to tight end Glenn Roderick for a second-quarter touchdown. Tailback Jake Potvin (137 yards rushing) ran for six points. Ben Callahan found the end zone twice for the Seahawks.
For the Raiders, who held a 14-6 halftime lead after scoreless first quarter and led 22-12 going into the last 10 minute of play, overcoming the loss of three injured starters was very significant. They were right guard and middle linebacker John McKenna, Greg Leonard, fullback and defensive end, and cornerback Dylan Blouin, who did get in for one play in the final minutes.
"We didn't execute as well offensively as we usually do with the starters out," MacNevin said. "But the team was able to overcome those obstacles and that really impressed us as coaches. The kids had to learn things in one week and they should be commended for that."
David Tovey went to right guard, and Richie Ellis went to middle linebacker. Dennis Elwell played defensive end and Zach Duffey went to fullback, where he gained 65 yards on 12 carries. A 7-yard run by Duffey to the Exeter 21-yard line set up the Raiders first touchdown on a fourth-and-five play.
Off play action, Jack MacNevin rolled to his left and threw to the left corner of the end zone where Roderick gathered the ball in for the touchdown 1:36 into the second quarter. Potvin rushed the conversion.
Jonathan Towle came up with seven-yard sack on the next Exeter possession and the Raiders, who ran 55 plays to the Seahawks 30, forced a punt to the Rochester 48. Six plays later, on second-and-one from the visitors 30, Potvin took the toss back from Jack MacNevin, ran through the right side, broke a tackle in the open field and went on to add six more points. A false start on the conversion try moved the ball back to the 8-yard line and led to an incomplete pass for the two extra points with 3:15 left in the half.
The Seahawks, aided by a pass interference penalty on the Raiders on a third-and-10 play, took advantage with a pass 45-yard pass to the speedy Bryan Dunn down the right side. He was prevented from scoring by Corey MacKoul at the 8. Callahan was able to get outside to the left on the next play and reach the corner of the end zone for the score with 1:46 to go. The conversion rush was stopped.
A Raider fumble was offset by a Jack MacNevin interception return of 22 yards that ended the half. Exeter came up with their first long run of the game after returning the second half kickoff to their own 34. Jason Monroe raced 38 yards off the right side before MacKoul brought him down at the Raiders 28.
Two plays later, at the 30, Lincoln Date caused a fumble that Tyler Emerson recovered, leading to a 10-play, 70-yard drive by the Raiders that ended in a 10-yard keeper to the right side for the touchdown by Jack MacNevin on third-and-goal after a five-yard touchdown run by Potvin was nullified due to a holding penalty.
"Any time you have a defensive play like that, it's huge," Coach MacNevin said. Potvin swept right for consecutive gains of 12, 13 and seven yards before Duffey's 13-yard pickup up the middle put the ball at the 5. Potvin twisted his way into the end zone for the conversion points.
"If we had broken two plays for touchdowns it could have helped," said Healy. "Their quarterback is very good. He has good ball skills and is able to fake well, making it hard to know who has the ball. He doesn't't run that much but he's very efficient when he does run it."
Callahan, praised for his play by Healy along with fellow safety Monroe and Dunn, raced 50 yards up the middle from his 35 following the kickoff after Jack MacNevin scored. He was tackled from behind by Roderick at the 15 and scored from the five three plays later. The pass for the conversion failed with 2:17 left in the third quarter. A lost fumble by the Raiders at the Exeter 44 gave the Seahawks a chance to move but they were held at the Rochester 43. Jack MacNevin scored five plays later, on third-and-five, on a 40-yard keeper to the right.
MacNevin got into open territory and made a nice cut inside of the safety around the 15 before reaching the end zone with 5:44 to play as a defender tried to bring him down. Potvin rushed for the conversion.
Jim MacNevin noted the offensive line performed well all year. Shawn Ham was the center, McKenna the right guard, Emerson the left guard, Jonathan Towle the right tackle, Alex Clement, a seventh grader, the left tackle.
"We look at it as one year at a time," said Jim MacNevin. "We strive to be the best we can each year. I want to thank the coaches. Ivan Ouellette and I have coached together many years. We work well together and get the most out of the kids. I want to thank everyone involved with the program."
Scott Baita, Norm Vetter, Mike Ham and Tim French coached the junior varsity and helped out a lot with the varsity squad. Team moms were Jacqui MacNevin, Lynda Baita and Peggy MacKoul.

Perfect finish for Little Raiders
Power past Timberlane in playoff final, 46-30
Rochester Times
By Mike Whaley
For the first time this season, the Rochester Little Raiders found themselves trailing at halftime.
The top team in the Southern New Hampshire Senior Football League, the Little Raiders were halfway through their match with Timberlane - a team they beat 47-0 early in the season - and they were behind 24-22.
It was a wide-open game under the frigid Saturday night-lights of Roger Allen Park. However, the Tornadoes finally buckled with two second-half turnovers and that was too much to give a talented Rochester team as they pulled away with a 46-30 championship win to end with a perfect 8-0 mark.
"They came through in the second half and they played tough," said Jim MacNevin. "We knew they beat Dover. The first game had no bearing on this one. We're down two points and I chewed them out. I told them we're not playing our game and we're making mistakes. I tried to rattle them and wake them up."
"We totally changed our defense (after that game)," Said Timberlane Jerry Lovett. "And we changed around our personnel."
Those changes were obvious, particularly on offense where Rochester had trouble containing the Tornadoes outstanding halfback Mike Leavitt (25-150, 2 TD's) perhaps the league's best player.
A Zeke Reynolds interception turned the tables at the outset of the second half. Three plays and a costly Timberlane penalty later, Raynor Smith went in from 13 yards out. Chris Williams added the two-points and a 30-24 lead.
But the Tornadoes answered behind Leavitt. During an eight-play, 56-yard drive, the bruising back carried the ball seven times for 50 yards, including the 17-yard scoring jaunt. The two point try failed and the game was tied at 30.
Less than 90 seconds later, the Little Raiders answered. Smith ran for 33 yards to the Timberlane 3 and shifty quarterback Mike Blouin slid in trom there for what proved to be the game-winning score. Blouin added the conversion on a run that almost saw him dragged down deep in the backfield. He stayed on his feet, changed direction and made a beeline for the left corner to boost Rochester's lead to 38-30.
The Little Raiders stopped Timberlane for the second time early in the fourth quarter. Blouin broke up a fourth down pass and the Little Raiders proceeded to put the game on ice.
Williams' 48-yard run moved the ball to the nine where Zeke Reynolds eventually muscled in for the insurance tally with 4:52 to play.
The Tornadoes fumbled on their next possession and Blouin recovered the ball to sew up the first Little Raiders title since 1992.
"We made some mistakes today," added MacNevin. "We bent but we did not break."
"We stalled a little in the third quarter and that turned the momentum a little," Said Lovett. "But Rochester's such a good team. They just keep coming at you. I'm glad we gave them a good game."
It was a wild, back-and-forth first half. Rochester scored on it's first three possessions, as did the Tornadoes.
Smith ran the opening kick off 37 yards to the Timberlane 41 and from there Williams scored on a 38 yard run, and added the two-point try.
Timberlane answered with a three-yard run by Chris Hinton and a two-pointer by Patrick Hamilton to knot the score at eight.
Smith led the Rochester running attack with 122 yards, while Williams added 114, Blouin 54, Reynolds 47, and Daniels 39.
Smith's 11-yard run and the two-point try by Reynolds made it 16-8, but Leavitt answered for Timberlane with a three-yard run and the two-point conversion to tie the score with 6:19 to go in the half.
The Little Raiders went up again on Justin Daniels' nine-yard run. The two-point try was good, but a holding penalty nullified it. A long pass play was broken up and Rochester lead 22-16.
Timberlane (6-3) tied the game up on Ryan Nugent's six-yard ramble with 1:23 to play. He had set up the play with a 51-yard pass reception from quarterback Shain Jowett.
It wasn't quite enough time for Rochester to strike back. They moved the ball from their own 40 to Timberlane's 12 before time expired.

Bright future: Rochester Little Red Raiders roll !
Bright future: Rochester Little Red Raiders roll over Portsmouth
By JOHN NASH
Fosters Sports Correspondent
ROCHESTER Somewhere, Hugo Bolin should be smiling.
After all, the future of football in this city has gone back in time, to a place where smashmouth is more than just a hip rock band.
The paradoxly named Little Red Raiders of Rochester would have done Bolin the legendary Spaulding High School coach proud on Saturday night, running over and through Portsmouth to post a 40-14 New Hampshire Youth Football League victory at Roger Allen Park.
"Were a smashmouth football team," said Rochester coach Jim MacNevin. "We like to run the ball a lot."
Which is exactly what the Little Red did, behind the rushing of quarterback Michael Blouin and his 169 yards and three touchdowns.
Blouin had staked Rochester to an 8-0 lead by taking the opening kickoff 75 yards for his first score.
Running behind a line of not-so-little Raiders like Steve Wolfinger, Ryan Angelotti, Chris Vages, Ryan Torres, Evan Perreault, Lee Brock and Tyler Jameson, Blouin and his backfield mates had huge holes to run through.
How easy was it?
Consider Rochesters opening play of the second quarter.
Already up by a 24-8 count, Blouin called a straight-ahead sneak. A few seconds and 59 yards later he was back in the end zone and Rochester was ahead 32-8.
He had scored on a 4-yard run earlier in the game, too.
"Michael is an exceptional athlete," MacNevin said. "He commands a lot of respect out there. Hes definitely the quarterback of this team. Hes the leader."
Chris Williams and Raynor Smith also ran the ball well, MacNevin said. Smith had a 44-yard TD run for a score while Zeke Reynolds rounded out the scoring for Rochester, finding the end zone on a 22-yard jaunt early in the third quarter.
"Were on a bit of a roll," MacNevin said of his 3-0 team, which hosts Souhegan in a non-league "invitational" game next Saturday. "Getting that first touchdown was big. Weve been jumping on teams early a lot this season.
For and young and battered Portsmouth team, it was like rushing the ball uphill for much of the game.
"Not to make excuses, but we had 10 seventh-graders out there for much of the game and this is mostly an eighth-grade league," Portsmouth coach Mark Allison said. "Were young and weve had a lot of injuries this year. But they played hard and they showed a lot of heart."
Sam Cote and Travis Crosby played exceptionally well for the Junior Clippers. Crosby scored on a 10-yard sweep in the first half and Cote scored on a 56-yard excursion late in the game.
"I thought Sam Cote was one of the best football players on the field tonight for either us or Rochester," Allison said. "He was in on almost every tackle and he was picking up seven yards a carry it seemed."
Crosby was playing with a heavy heart, his coach added, still going to the game after he learned about the death of an uncle.
"That says a lot about that kid, right there," Allison said.

" To win as a TEAM, you must be a TEAM "
A Coaches motto!
An old man, a boy and a donkey were going to town. The boy rode on the donkey and the old man walked. As they went along they passed some people who remarked it was a shame the old man was walking and the boy was riding. The man and the boy thought maybe the critics were right , so they changed positions.
Later they passed some people that remarked "What a shame, he makes that little boy walk." They decided they both would walk!
Soon they passed some more people who thought they were stupid to walk when they had a decent donkey to ride. So, they both rode the donkey!
Now they passed some people that shamed them by saying how awful to put such a load on a poor donkey. The boy and man said they were probably right so they decided to carry the donkey.
As they crossed a bridge, they lost their grip on the animal and he fell into the river and drowned.
The moral of the story?.... If you try to please everyone, you will eventually lose your ass.
Words from two Legendary coaches.
COMPETITIVE GREATNESS
What is competitive greatness? It's being at your best when your best is needed.
It's enjoying the challenge when things become difficult, even very difficult.
True competitors know it's exhilarating to be involved in something that's very challenging.
They don't fear it. They seek it.
Is it fun to do that which is ordinary, easy, simple, something anyone can do? Not at all.
Yet most of the tasks we do in our everyday lives are very simple. Anybody could do them.
They will not produce the joy that comes from being involved with something that challenges your body, mind, and spirit.
Competitors love that challenge. They know it offers the chance to produce their very finest.
It brings forth their competitive greatness.
