Congratulations Mountain View Softball Little League / Major All-Stars / District 7 Champs. July 8, 2009. The Red Mountain girls faced the Mountain View team for the championship tonight in a rematch from last week. After losing to Mountain View last week the girls were hoping to turn the tables this time around but that was not to be the case. The Red Mountain girls opened the game at bat and were quickly retired in order putting all three balls in play only to see Mountain View make the plays. In the bottom of the inning the Mountain View girls accounted for 6 runs in the bottom of first with a good display of hitting. In the top of the 2nd inning, Red Mountain was able to get a runner to second base only to leave her stranded and held scoreless again. The bottom of the second inning saw Red Mountain quickly retire the first two batters of the inning but then Mountain View strung a few hits together to add on 3 more runs to take a 9-0 lead after two innings. The top of the third inning the Red Mountain girls were retired in order again, unable to get some offense going. In the bottom of the third inning, Mountain View scored 2 more runs to bring the game to 11-0. The top of the fourth inning required Red Mountain to score at least two runs to keep the game going and avoid the mercy run rule enforcement but sadly the Mountain View pitching was very good tonight and Red Mountain was retired in order again. It was a tough loss in what was a terrific run of games for the Red Mountain girls. Congratulations to the girls for taking 2nd place in the District 7 tournament and a big thanks to all the coaches, parents and volunteers that made the All-Star season a great success.
Red Mountain girls took the field last night against Mesa Westwood with a berth in the championship game at stake. With Mesa American defeating Mountain View in the earlier game, the Red Mountain girls needed to win the game to create a three way tie for first and by order of tie breaking rules, grab one of the top two spots. Red Mountain came out strong in the first inning putting some hits and walks together and scored four runs in the top of the first inning. The Red Mountain pitching picked up where it left off the night before as it was solid and largely unhittable for most of the night. Mesa Westwood was retired in order in bottom of first to keep the score at 4-0. The top of the second inning saw Red Mountain continue the offensive action, adding nine more runs and increasing their lead to 13-0. Mesa Westwood again was held scoreless in their half of the inning. The top of the third inning, Red Mountain was able to scrap a few more hits and walks together to get another run and while their offense cooled off, their pitching and defense continued to shine as they held Mesa Westwood scoreless yet again, bringing the score to 14-0. Red Mountain girls were not able to score any runs in the top of the fourth inning, an inning that saw Mesa Westwood pull off a nifty double play and that took us to bottom of fourth inning. Mesa Westwood needed to score five runs to avoid the game being called for the mercy rule. Mesa Westwood got their first two runners on base and advanced to second and third with no outs when the next batter hit a ground ball to shortstop that was thrown to first for the out and then the runner advancing from 2nd to 3rd on the play was thrown out at third base for a very nice double play. The runner on 3rd scored, but two critical outs were recorded and the next batter was retired bringing the game to a close, Red Mountain 14, Mesa Westwood 1. Congratulations to the girls for an impressive win and good luck tonight in their championship game against Mountain View.
Red Mountain comes from behind to beat Mesa Southern. July 6, 2009
The Red Mountain girls squared off against Mesa Southern and pulled off a nice come from behind victory, winning 17-10. Red Mountain jumped out early with 5 runs in the top of the first inning only to see Mesa Southern answer with 5 runs of their own to tie the game after one inning. The next couple of innings saw Mesa Southern pick up a few runs while Red Mountain was able to hit the ball and put it in play only to see Mesa Southern’s defense continue to make the plays. With Mesa Southern up 10-5, the Red Mountain girls began to chip away at the lead, making the game 10-7 after three innings and 10-8 after four innings. Red Mountain’s pitching was stellar down the stretch, keeping the Mesa Southern team scoreless allowing for their offense to get started and get them back in the game. In the top of the 5th inning, good hitting and aggressive base running allowed Red Mountain to tie the game and eventually score the go ahead run with 2 outs on a close play at home. Red Mountain had regained the lead and there were cheers all around. Again, pitching was key as Mesa Southern was held scoreless in the bottom of the 5th inning preserving Red Mountain’s lead into the final inning. In the top of the 6th inning, the Red Mountain girls rode the momentum and sprung loose for 6 more runs, with three of them coming on a bases loaded triple. With a 17-10 lead going into the bottom of the last inning, Mesa Southern saw a couple of runners get on base only to be stranded as Red Mountain again kept runners from crossing home plate and ending the game with a final score of 17-10.
A great comeback win for the girls and a nice way to start the week for the Red Mountain girls – great job!
Red Mountain suffers first loss in game 6; even at 1 – 1. July 2, 2009
Red Mountain girls faced a tough Mountain View team tonight and suffered a 19-4 loss. Mountain View opened up the game with back to back two out hits in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Red Mountain managed one hit but was kept scoreless, keeping the score at 1-0. In the top of the second inning, Mountain View quickly loaded the bases and came through with back to back hits driving in two runs each for a 5-0 lead. They tagged on two more runs before the third out was retired giving them a 7-0 lead. Red Mountain batters went down quietly in the bottom of the second leaving the score at 7-0 after two innings. Mountain View continued to hit and run at an impressive rate and exploded for 7 runs in the top of the third inning. In the bottom of the inning, Red Mountain got a couple of runners on base and they were able to score their first run of the game, brining the score to 14-1 after three innings. The top of the fourth inning saw Mountain View pick up where they left off the previous inning, displaying solid hitting and base running. They tacked on 5 more runs to their lead bringing the score to 19-1. In the bottom of the inning, the Red Mountain girls continued to compete and give their best effort and managed to score three more runs in the bottom of the inning. Unfortunately, it was not enough runs to avoid the mercy run rule bringing the game to a close after 4 innings. It was a tough game but there's no shame as they played hard and lost to a very good Mountain View team.
Good luck to the girls in their next game against Mesa Southern.
