Take Proper Care...Your Arm is Your Weapon!
PitchersSandCans
"If you can't throw, you can't play baseball." It's as simple as that. Remember to prepare your arm before every practice or game with proper warm-up, flexibility exercises, including sand cans and bungie tubes for pitchers. Throwing causes trama to the arm, opening the blood vessels. Following a heavy load of throwing on a given day, pitchers especially, be sure to ice the shoulder and/or elbow as soon as the activity is finished in order to reduce the swelling that will ensue as a result of the trama. Twenty-minutes on, twenty-minutes off, and twenty-minutes on again is a generally accepted first method of treatment. The ice should be in plastic or a baggie, then applied with a light towel wrap to avoid the possibility of direct ice contact on the skin. The sooner that icing takes place after throwing, the quicker the recovery for the arm and its return to peak performance status. If arm soreness or pain persists, see an athletic trainer or medical professional for appropriate therapy or further attention. Remember, as a ballplayer, Your ARM is Your Weapon!

Prepare to Throw and Prevent Arm Injuries...

Pitchers team up in preparation before a game. Chris Curka is shown here helping James Wischer work flexibility resistance in one of five routines conducted by pitchers before throwing. Arm care is critical to strength, stamina, and longevity as a ballplayer.
