In a much anticipated match-up between ML King and Corona's boys, Corona put a tough October behind them and emerged as the league champs with a 35-56 victory. With both teams being ranked in the Top 10 for the Southern Section (Division I) it has been a season where the pendulum has swung both ways! Corona won the first league meet by 33 points (ML King did not have two of their top six) while ML King returned the favor with a 18 point victory in the 2nd league meet where Corona was missing two of their top six. In the end, Corona put the pieces back together in placing five in the top 11 and a nice 42 second scoring gap. Meanwhile, Santiago's boys have put together a very fine season as they scored 70 points and recorded an impressive 81:18 minutes on a course that run pretty similiar to Mt. SAC times. Also moving on to the CIF Prelims again is a tough Roosevelt squad that went 82:26, featuring two sophomores in their top four. But, as the sun set, Corona claimed its 7th straight league title, which is the longest running streak in Riverside County. Corona and ML King will both be seeded to qualify for Nov. 21 CIF Finals. Santiago could surprise a few and be right there as well. ML King junior Lane Werley ran just well enough to win as we forsee Mr. Werley's season going into December. A very impressive performance was put forth by Corona junior Michael Gauger as he took two weeks off to mend a knee injury. This was only Gauger's 2nd race since the 3rd week of September.
For the girls, the league is much thinner as ML King's girls have dominated the league since its inception in 2008. Today was no different as they scored a mere 29 points to Corona's 53. The telling sign of the league was that 120 points was 3rd. But, a nice race indeed took place as both Roosevelt and Centennial battled it out for 3rd place and while both scored 120 points - Roosevelt's #6 prevailed. Moving back to ML King, senior Kelsi Tippets won her second straight league MVP honor. Teammate Hannah Peterson was right with her throughout the race as they both moved away from the pack with a mile to go. A nice surprise was found in JW North sophomore Mariel Mendoza as she moved up from 7th place at the mile mark to a solid 3rd place effort, which qualified her to CIF as an individual.
ML King dominated both Junior Varsity levels with Corona taking 2nd places in both affairs.
