Sitting out Carrie Soholt to heal shin splints, ML King's girls were still able to outlast Corona, 29-37. On the boys' side, despite falling 1/4 a mile into the race, Lane Werley was able to outkick Corona's Michael Gauger for the individual victory in a battle of the two best sophomores in the county. Corona's boys were able to avenge an earlier lost, 37-50 over ML King - the most improved boys' squad in the county. King's JV boys' squad is also one of the best in the county...

Lane Werley and Kelsi Tippets sweep the individual wins
at the second Big 8 League cluster meet of the season!
The Big 8 league held its second cluster meet of their short history at Mountain Gate Park in Corona, hosted by Santiago HS. After a clean sweep by King in all four races three weeks ago, the Corona Panthers came with intent to make the meet closer, which they did, winning the JV girls race to start things off.
The varsity races were good battles. King, running a couple of varsity runners short of normal saw their comfort zone squeezed a bit, but still held on to win. Kelsi Tippets of King was challenged through two miles by 9th grader Adriana Olivas of Centennial-Corona, but pulled away in the final mile. Other than
Olivas in second and Doraliz Miranda of Roosevelt in the mix, King and Corona alternated places through each team's fifth runner.
The boys race was sure to shape up nicely, as Eleanor Roosevelt, King and Corona were all just 9 points apart after the first meet was scored. Resting no one this time around, Corona got down to business with a very conservative first mile before moving nicely up through the crowd. Pace setting duties were being handled by Jonathan Lopez of Roosevelt, Omar Gonzalez of Centennial, Michael Gauger of Corona and Lane Werley of King. In the final 400 meters, that pack was winnowed down to Lopez, Gauger and Werley, and the latter two made their moves simultaneously with 50 meters to go. Parting a screaming throng of spectators, the two talented sophomores sprinted in with Werley besting Gauger by a second. It was Corona's pack that ruled the team contest however, as they were able to place four in before King's second man.
