Riverside County Cross Country: 2006 Highlights

2006 Final Boys' Team Rankings and All-County Squads
Choosing our finals rankings became very complicated after CIF Finals. Murrieta Valley leapfrogged La Sierra and Vista Murrieta there. In choosing our top three teams - we had to go back and look at head-to-head races...in the end - La Sierra had the overall better season in going 5-1 against the other two powerhouses!

Two Knights are Twice as Nice
In selecting our 2006 Boys' Athlete of the Year for Riverside County, we knew that it was going to be one of the Knight brothers from La Sierra. Along with King High being represented on the female side of this distinction - the Ivy League was very well represented in 2006. But, after a strong surge at the California State Meet, as usual, these two individuals made it tougher on us. In looking back on the overall picture, Spencer Knight had beat his brother by an overall margin of 22 seconds! Keep in mind, that was over the course of seven races! Meanwhile, at the state meet - Dylan Knight emerged out of the pack and raced to a 15:11, only one second away from the overall county record held by Rubidoux's Antonio Jiminez. In keeping things in perspective, Spencer did make it onto the podium and did run to the 3rd fastest county mark (15:20) in the history of the state meet. He also became one of the few athletes to break 15:45 in two consecutive state meet appearances. You historians will love this one - this was THE FIRST TIME in 20 years of the California State Meet that two brothers got to the podium for Division I in the same season. And another note - they are THE FIRST TEAMMATES to EVER run a 15:20 or below at the State Meet (Woodward Park) in the same season!

Are we wimping out by our selection here - HECK NO! Both Spencer AND Dylan Knight of La Sierra are our 2006 Riverside County Athlete(s) of the Year! Racing in Dylan's shadow for most of the first three seasons, Spencer stepped it up during the 2005 Cross Country season to qualify for the state meet. He continued his ascent by usually coming out in top when the two raced head-to-head in the 1600 meters this past spring. For many of us - it is VERY tough to tell them apart. But, usually - they did us a favor this season by rearranging the depth of their go-tees or by the glare of the pajamas they would wear walking into the stadiums or during their "warm-up" routines!

They have yet to choose what university they will attend. Most likely, they will stay together and attend the same school while both of them have very strong grades. UC Riverside and UCLA has shown strong interest. We are surprised that more colleges have not expressed interest - perhaps when they become the fastest duo in California history in the 1600 meters next May??

Highlights of their season include:
*Spencer setting a new course record at the Fastback Shootout (Mt. SAC's 2 mile course) with Dylan only six seconds behind him.
*Spencer and Dylan cruising to a 1-2 finish at the Rim Run in 17:31
*Spencer won the College Park Invite while Dylan....
*Both finished 2nd and 3rd at the Inland Empire Challenge in leading their team to a 2nd place finish and a Riverside County Championship
*Both became the first duo of teammates in Riverside County History to break 15:10 at Mt. SAC (Spencer at 14:59 and Dylan at 15:04) - led their team to a 79:12 team time
*Both go 1-2 at the Ivy League Finals (Spencer in 15:43 and Dylan in 15:47)
*Dylan finishes with a 15:16 and Spencer in 15:18 at Mt. SAC to advance their team to the CIF Finals (2nd place team in their heat)
*Both qualify for the state meet as Spencer runs a 14:58 and Dylan runs a 15:13...
*Dylan races to a 4th place finish at the state meet in 15:11 and Spencer races to a 7th place finish in 15:20.

2005 - Patrick Milloy (Murrieta Valley)
2004 - Brett Campfield (Temecula Valley)
2003 - Brett Campfield (Temecula Valley)
2002 - Antonio Jiminez (Rubidoux)

Oh, by the way - is that the worst headline we've come up with in the five years of doing this website?!?!?!?!

King's Carissa Bowman Climbs to the Top
Vision and patience - two crucial ingedients to making a great distance runner! At the beginning of October, King head coach Brad Peters sent out a newsletter reminding his athletes about how important vision was to the success of an athlete. He wrote of a story of an athlete that wanted to qualify for the Cross Country Nationals, a goal that many felt was beyond the scope of that particular athlete. Well, in the end - Ayala's Steve Smith did qualify and went on to a successful career in college. Incredible vision that became reality...

Did junior Carissa Bowman grasp this story of incredible vision and determination? Perhaps, we'll never know but after a disappointing 19:07 at the Clovis Invite, we do know this! Bowman clicked into another gear and simply ran away from the rest of the competition here in Riverside County. While Corona's Ashley Evans was claiming the Riverside County patch at the Inland Empire Championships on that same day, perhaps Bowman drove back to Riverside more determined than ever. Exercising the patience of a poised veteran, Bowman began "holding back" at dual meets that she would, in the past, dominate by over a minute. She also began guiding her new teammate, freshman Kelsi Tippets. Meanwhile, she began her ascent towards the elite runners in California.

Against some of the best females in the state, Carissa raced to an awesome 18:05 in the Mt. SAC Individual Sweepstakes Race. She than raced to another Ivy League Individual title. A disappointing 18:24 at CIF Prelims led to a greater sense of enjoyment as she ended up leading her untouted squad to another berth in the Division I CIF Finals! And, after failing to qualify to the state meet in 2005, she left no doubt in 2006. After a patient first mile, she began moving up and finished 8th at the CIF Finals and claimed the 3rd individual spot to Fresno.

Back to Woodward Park! This was the 4th time she would run the prestigious course in Fresno but the first of this great magnitude. She was the first Cross County athlete from Martin Luther King to advance to the state meet! Lots of pressure perhaps for a young woman. But with the support of "Carissa's Crew" there were no worries. Not focusing on the "who's who" in the crowd, Bowman ran a superb race. Cruising the first mile with Corona's Evans around 16th place, she made a nice move up the hill just past the mile mark and cemented herself as our Riverside County Athlete of the Year. With an awesome last 1200 meters, she moved all the way up to 11th place and the 4th fastest time (18:14) turned by any Riverside County girl at the California State Meet! Her mark just missed the podium but created the vision and confidence for next season.

Vision and patience - did coach Peters create the vision for Bowman through his story of a former athlete? Did Carissa bring in the patience that has kept her "under the radar" on the statewide scene until this past November? Either way, watch out for Ms. Bowman this upcoming Track & Field season and next Cross Country season!

Congratulations to our 2006 Riverside County Female Athlete of the Year - Martin Luther King junior Carissa Bowman!

2005 - Liana Boucher (Murrieta Valley)
2004 - Alma Escobar (Corona)

Woodcrest Boys Defend State Title - Knights Blaze the Woodward Park Course!
In THE fastest day in the history of California State Meet on the boys' side, La Sierra's Dylan and Spencer Knight raced to two of the fastest three times for Riverside County Individuals! This time, it was Dylan racing ahead as he ran to an impressive 4th place finish and 15:11 - just one second off of the Riverside County record (Antono Jiminez-Rubidoux). This may be the first time Riverside County has put two teammates on the podium for the Division I State Meet Finals!

In qualifying for the California State Meet for a 7th year in a row - Woodcrest Christian walked away with another state title plaque! This is their 3rd state title and 2nd in a row! Senior Kody Peterson led the charge, but was followed closely by sophomore Jake Jeanson! Senior David Branch also graduates with two state titles! Junior J.R. Barreto and freshman

Woodcrest Christian's girls got themselves on the podium with an impressive 3rd place finish. Sitting out freshman Breanne Collier last week at CIF Finals gave her an extra week to heal and propelled them to the podium. Her twin sister Amber raced to an impressive 18:40! Do not be surprised if Woodcrest are the favorites for 2007 as their top three are 9th graders!

Our hats are off to the girls from Murrieta Valley. Their two best races of the season were put together these last two weeks! After being ranked around 8th or 9th in the Southern Section for most of the season, they raced to a 5th place finish last week. At the state meet, they packed up about as well as any team and finished an impressive 7th place. They actually beat last week's 4th place team (Esperanza) in doing so. Losing three seniors from their top five will be a challenge but after the challenges they faced this season, they are THE program that will overcome them.

The top female from Riverside County at the state meet was Martin Luther King junior Carissa Bowman (18:14. Carissa stay pretty consersative through the first mile and stayed back around 16th place. Halfway through the race, she continued to move up and eventually finished a very close 11th place. Corona's Ashley Evans was in the same race and finished in 13th place with a time of 18:23. With Collier's 18:40 mark, three of the fastest ten marks at the State Meet are from 2006.

Murrieta Valley Comes Up Huge (again) When It Counts Most - Woodcrest Girls' take 2nd Place!!!
You have to hand it to the girls from Murrieta Valley. Just when they were losing top athletes, they simply moved on. Just when Great Oak and Vista Murrieta came to challenge them in the Southwestern League - they proved that they still own the league! Just when Corona had a chance to upend them in back-to-back weeks - they proved stronger than ever and move on to their 5th consecutive state meet berth! This is a new Riverside County record as they took an impressive 5th place in the Division I Girls' Finals. Even with sophomore Kendell Dye having an off-race, the senior leadership of Katie Borum, Danielle Calhoun and Courtney Dixon provided the fortitude of champions. Very few teams from the Southern Section (Division I) have qualified for the state meet five years in a row...(we're not even sure if it's been done before?)----congrats!

Woodcrest Christian's girls lost a CIF Title, but will settle for the Runner-Up plaque. Fab freshman Breanne Collier fell victim to a stress fracture and had to watch from the sidelines. Her twin sister (whom she had raced with in every race this season) motored to a huge victory while fellow freshman Lauren Aycock raced to a 2nd place finish. This would have given Woodcrest the 1-2-3 finish and a CIF Title (even CIF Champion Chadwick's head coach George Ramos admitted to this). It looks as if Woodcrest will have a shot other CIF Titles over the next three seasons! There's a strong chance that Breanne Collier will run this weekend and bring home TWO state titles for the Royals of Woodcrest!

Perhaps, THE nicest surprise of November (perhaps, the biggest since we've done this website) was the ascent of Martin Luther King!!! Frustrated by an overall lack of devotion and consistency over the years - this 2006 squad can be the one that turns things around and puts King on a statewide spotlight. Junior Carissa Bowman becomes the 1st ML King athlete to move on to the state meet after an impressive 18:09 and 8th place overall finish in the Divison I Finals.   (2nd fastest freshman) for Division I. Freshman Kelsi Tippets ran a smart, controlled first mile and moved up through the pack to finish a very impressive 15th place and the #2 freshman overall in Division I. The Panthers of Corona qualified for the CIF Finals for a 5th season in a row but unfortunately - they go home for a 5th year in a row! Well - sort of, the team will travel up to Fresno to support sophomore Ashley Evans after she qualified as the last individual to go in that same Division I Final. Evans ran a disappointing race (31 seconds slower than the week before) but will look for a huge rebound this weekend in Fresno!

Linfield Christian also moves on to the California State Meet after a 6th place finish in the Division V CIF Finals! This is their 2nd year in a row to do this, a feat difficult to acheive. Murrieta Calvary Chapel's Brooklin Brumond also qualified as the 3rd individual in the Division IV CIF Finals race!

Woodcrest Christian Races to Another CIF Titles - Only Boys' Squad to Move on to Fresno!!!
For the first time since 1999, we only had ONE boys' team qualify for the California State Meet in Woodcrest Christian. Our three superpowers ended the season looking in from the outside unfortunately. But, what a nice surprise in that the Murrieta Valley group leapfrogged La Sierra and Vista Murrieta by finishing an impressive 9th place. Vista Murrieta's Fab Four ran strong but against some of the greatest group of teams ever in California history - they finished 11th place. Murrieta Valley was not in the Top 10 rankings for most of the season and strong races by seniors Connor Pastoor and Tom Connelly put them right there in the running for another state meet berth. La Sierra was very disappointed in their 10th place finish, despite having Spencer and Dylan Knight qualify for the state meet as individuals. Actually, this will be Dylan's first trip to the state meet after Spencer qualified in 2005. Spencer does become the first athlete in county history to break 15:00 twice on the Mt. SAC course!Meanwhile, the county record (14:52) held by Rubidoux's Antonio Jiminez remains in tact!

The true MVP of the day was junior J.R. Barreto of Woodcrest Christian!!! Barreto passed about ten runners in the 300 meters to secure their CIF Title by a mere six points!!! He had been laying low in the results this season but stepped up when his team needed him most. They are the favorites going into this weekend in defending thier Division V State Title. Congrats to Kody Peterson in earning the Division V Individual CIF Title! Junior Frank Curry of Desert Christian (Bermuda Dunes) also qualified as an individual in that same Division V Final.
