Reddish Siblings Rule Riverside County in 2011
After coming off of successful 2010 Cross Country seasons, a lot was to be expected from Erika and Porter Reddish here in 2011. Not only did they possess credentials to both qualify for the California state meet as individuals, but they shared their ambition, competiveness and leadership and drove their teams beyond initial expectations this past season. For their individual accomplishments and being both of their squads' leaders, we reward senior Erika Reddish and junior brother, Porter Reddish as our 2011 Riverside County Athletes of the Year. The expectations were huge for Erika Reddish after coming off one of the greatest seasons of any Riverside County distance runner and setting the new county record for the 1600 meters. This came along with a CIF title while also qualifying for the state meet finals in that same event. Meanwhile, she just missed setting the county history in the 3200 last March as well. All of this along while qualifying the past two seasons with her team to the Cross Country state meets - the expectations were higher than ever. When you look back to 2008 as Erika not finishing at the CIF Finals, with her team placing a distant 16th place, it makes all of the 2011 accomplishments even more special. Not only did she set a new county record for San Diego's Morley Park course, she cemented her name at the top of our record books with her 17:12 effort at this year's CIF Finals. With that effort, she set a new county record for the Mt. SAC course while easily capturing the CIF Title and leading her girls' squad to another state meet berth. In late October, we mentioned how the Vista Murrieta girls were underranked going into November and Erika was a huge reason for our confidence. More than her individual accomplishments, one of the most impressive attributes was her ability to lead her squad to one of the most surprising finishes in county history. Off of most radars, the VM girls raced to a 3rd place finish at the CIF Finals but turned even more heads with their 2nd place finish at the California State Meet and our #1 county team ranking! With some terrific seasons turned in by our 2010 recipient Adriana Olivas of Centennial and JW North's Mariel Mendoza, several other coaches commented on Erika's consistency throughout the entire season along with handling the expectations of having a team rely on her to perform at such a high level with each race. Porter Reddish now has the task of repeating in 2012, following in the footsteps of ML King's Lane Werley (now at UCLA) in 2010. But, more than Porter's individual accomplishments this past Fall was how he also helped lead his young squad back to statewide prominence and almost earning a state meet berth. In 2012, he will lead a squad that will be mentioned amongst one of the best in the state but has no problem taking on that role of a leader. Porter recorded the top time of any Riverside County boy for the Mt. SAC course and at the California State Meet. Despite winning the Inland Empire Challenge in October, Porter went into CIF Finals not ranked in the top 10. But, he proved the pronosticators wrong with his solid 15:01 effort and an outstanding 4th place finish! Perhaps a little disappointed with his 15th place finish at the state meet, he was the 4th fastest underclassman in the race. Needless to say, he will come back as one of the top boys in the state in 2012! Leading a fine group of juniors here in the county, Porter was 3rd team all-county as a freshman, 2nd-team last year as a sophomore and now claims the distinction of our best male athlete here in 2011 with his obvious 1st Team accolades. We dedicate much more time here to his sister for her being a senior, but we will feel that Porter's coach put it best in describing he and her sister....
From Coach Karen Candaele: We congratulate Erika and Porter Reddish as our 2011 Riverside County Athletes of the Year!

Vista Murrieta / Xavier Prep Hit The Podium - Mendoza Up to NXNs
Updated Thursday, Dec. 8 In the Division V race, Xavier College Prep was able to live up to the rankings and finish with a solid 2nd place effort! Catapulting themselves up to the podium in only four years, we suspect that they will be around for quite sometime! Sophomore Valeria Ruiz ended her season with her best race yet, finishing in 18th place with a 19:32 time. Six girls return for the Saints in 2012! Head Coach Aron Lyons has done a great developing a program, that competes in the large schools-laden Desert Valley League, to statewide prominence. Meanwhile, their boys took a solid 5th place in the boys Division V race. They were the only Div. V program with both teams in the top 5! Senior Tommy Paz ended an outstanding career with his 16:12, 13th place performance. Our top boys team, Great Oak, was right in the thick of the competition throughout that incredible Division I Boys race. But, in the end, they settled for 4th place and recorded one of the fastest team times at the state meet of any team in Riverside County History. They were led by senior Michael Hewitt, who came in with a 15:40 clocking. Coming off of the 2010 CIF and State Championships, Great Oak's girls were looking to defend those titles. But, here in 2011, it was not meant to be. Graduating a strong contingent in 2010, they definitely put together a great season here, but fell short of defending their Div. I state title. Led by senior Pauline Mandel, they still managed to finish 7th here and be amongst one of the best squads in the state. Meanwhile, JW North's Mariel Mendoza capped off one of the greatest prep careers here in Riverside County with a eye popping 17:39 runner-up finish in that incredible Division II girls race! In the fastest race ever in state meet history, Mendoza rose to the occasion and moved up to 2nd place to lead the chase group (chasing Simi Valley's Sarah Baxter who was 30 seconds ahead) at the two mile mark. With confidence growing with every stride, Mendoza held off the field to roll to an outstanding 17:39, which ties Liza Pascuito's 2002 mark for the 2nd fastest time in county history for the California State Meet. In moving forward and compete at the Nike Cross Nationals next weekend, Mendoza becomes a first girl to qualify for that meet (ML King's Lane Werley, competing in 2009 and 2010 is our only boy). Centennial senior Adriana Olivas capped one of the greatest careers in Riverside County history with her 5th place finish, in a time of 18:05. With her traditional aggressive first mile, she led the race at the mile mark but was unable to keep pace with the leaders over the last half of the race. Meanwhile, moving up from 18th place with a mile to go, Corona sophomore Alicia Williams kicked it into gear with 1200m to go and finished 8th place in a nice time of 18:11. Her teammate, Venus Shabgahi, fighting a cold, was unable to move up on the field that last mile and settled for 24th place in a time of 18:38. In the Division V girls race, Alexia Velerde of Marywood-Palm Valley, out in Palm Desert, took the early lead in that first mile, and made her way to the podium with her 4th place finish (18:39). Our top freshman this season ended up being Linfield Christian's Jackie Crowther who came on strong here in November with her 18:59, 11th place effort. For the boys individuals, Vista Murrieta junior Porter Reddish recorded the fastest time of any Riverside County boy with his 15:33 effort. He placed 15th in the Division I competition. Meanwhile, Norte Vista junior Omar Caro, just missed the podium with his 15:37, 11th place effort in the Division II race.

Reddish Sets New County Mt. SAC Record; Xavier Prep Takes Home CIF Title
Updated Sunday morning... Xavier College Prep, only in its 4th year of existence, captured the Girls Division V CIF Title by placing five in the top 25 to secure the crown. Led by Valeria Ruiz' 8th place finish, they ran to a very impressive 98:35 team time. In that same race, Marywood - Palm Valley senior, Alexia Velarde, got out to a huge lead and held on for the 18:04 CIF Title! Right behind her was the freshman from Linfield Christian, Jackie Crowther in a time of 18:29. Both easily qualified onto the state meet as individuals. Surprisingly and unranked for most of the season, Crowther led her Linfield Christian group to next week's state meet! Xavier College Prep's boys also qualified after taking 5th place in the Boys Division V race. This is their 2nd straight year as they will look to expand upon their 5th place state meet finish a year ago. They were led by a great 15:57 effort of senior Tommy Paz. This school is quickly built itself into one of elite small schools programs in California. In that same boys' race, Isaiah Thompson of Sherman Indian took 15th place and snagged that last state meet individual spot. We realize that most of these small schools get overshadowed by the great effort of the larger schools, so here's to some great efforts and great representation at next week's state meet! In highlighting Reddish above, Vista Murrieta's girls finished right behind Great Oak's girls who took home the 3rd place plaque. Being ranked #1 all year long and looking for a 3rd straight title, Great Oak was definitely disappointed. Led by Pauline Mandel's stellar 17:53 effort, Great Oak still ran one of the fastest times in county history for the Mt. SAC course. Meanwhile, Great Oak's boys saw a HUGE step-up performance by Michael Hewitt to also take home the 3rd place CIF plaque. Meanwhile, the boys put it together well and ran the 2nd fastest team time ever in Riverside County. With all boys clicking next week, they can realistically go after the Woodward Park county course record and claim a spot on the podium! Both easily qualified back to next weekend's California State Meet. We also suspect that a much more driven Great Oak girls squad to be present now for next weekend's state meet as they will look to defend their state title! Meanwhile, do not count out Vista Murrieta's girls for the podium at next weekend's state meet! An absolutely inspiring 17:58 performance was put forth by Sarah Benson while their regular #2 Nicaela Hernandez did not finish the race today. Remember that Benson did not rejoin the team until seven weeks ago and seems to be making leaps and bounds every week! With Hernandez running as well as she did last weekend at prelims, the Broncos will be vying for that state title! Speaking of Broncos, Porter Reddish qualified for the state meet as an individual as their boys just fell short by a mere 8 points! His 15:01 effort was the top effort in the county! He helped soften the blow of realizing that his boys just missed the state meet. Rest assured that the junior driven squad will be one of the higher ranked groups in the state in 2012. Also moving forward as an individual is Norte Vista junior Omar Caro out of Division II. His 15:08 effort yielded him an impressive 4th place in a very competitive race. Caro continues to carve out a nice legacy here in Riverside County. Also qualifying for the state meet in that Girls Division I race were Centennial's Adriana Olivas (17:25), and the Corona dynamic duo of Alicia Williams (17:43) and Venus Shabgahi (17:50). Along with JW North's Mariel Mendoza (17:33) qualifying for her 3rd straight meet in that incredible Division II race, the Big VIII league sent four individuals forward. Olivas and Williams move on for the 2nd straight year. We have updated all of the top Mt. SAC marks for the boys for the 2011 season! Working on the girls...
