Jared Donaldson (green shirt) won a national championship in Florida.

Donaldson battled through the seven-day tournament, survived a scare in a semifinal and then topped Alabama’s Josiah Collins, 6-2, 6-4, in the championship match to become the first New England male since James Blake to win a USTA national championship.

Donaldson, who is coached by Mario Llano at the Rhode Island Tennis Academy, has held the No. 1 ranking in the boys’ 12 division since January. In his semifinal match against Tommy Paul, Donaldson dropped the first set, 3-6, but bounced back to win the next two (6-4, 6-1).
