Awards Night at Roosevetl Honors Softball Performances!
trophies

The Roosevelt High School Spring Sports Awards were held at the school on June 2nd and the outstanding athletes for each sport were acknowledged and honored. Along with Fastpitch Softball, spring sports include Track & Field, Boys Soccer, Girls Golf, Girls Tennis and Baseball. The RoughRider Softball squads were well represented with almost all of our players in attendance.

Coach Anton acknowledged the teams accomplishments to the assembled crowd, noting that in 2009 we were undefeated against other Seattle teams, that we made the district playoffs for the second straight year and we finally got our long awaited wins against some eastside schools.

The following players were recognized for their performances for fastpitch softball in 2009.

* Junior Varsity Most Improved player; Marina Golubtsova, freshman

* Junior Varsity Offensive Player of the year; Hannah Bender, sophomore

* Junior Varsity Defensive Player of the year; Elizabeth Hiner, sophomore

* Junior Varsity MVP; Elizabeth Hiner, sophomore

* Varsity Most Improved Player; Julie Thompson, sophomore

* Varsity Batting Champion; Isabelle Batayola, junior

* Varsity Pitcher of the Year; Megan Campbell, freshman

* Varsity Gold Glove; Diana Hermansen, junior

* Coach's Award (Spirit, Integrity, Dedication, Effort, Inspiration); Casey Bouldin, sophomore

Kelsey Paul (senior) was awarded a special plaque for the achievement of 4 years of Varsity play.

The Roosevelt Roughriders softball team also had 3 players selected to the KingCo All-League team (Honorable Mention)

* Kelsey Paul, senior (Outfield)

* Casey Bouldin, sophomore (1st Base)

* Anne McGowan, freshman (Utility)

Junior Isabelle Batayola was named as the 2nd Team KingCo All-League Shortstop

Junior Diana Hermansen was named 1st Team KingCo All-League D.P.

The softball program continues to exhibit improvement each year and I'm looking for a repeat performance to the playoffs in 2010 and a run for state against a very strong KingCo 4A league. See you at summer league!

Regular Season Ends In Woodinville
translide

A final rainout on Wednesday forced our final game to 6:30 PM on Thursday at Woodinville High School.

Freshman Megan Murray got her first start for the RoughRiders on the rubber, throwing three innings for the green and gold, striking out 3. She was relieved by our other freshman pitcher, Megan Campbell, who allowed no earned runs on her 3 inning in the circle. This strength on the rubber bodes will for the future of the program.

Sophomore Anne McGowan led the team in offense going two for three with a double. Juniors Isabelle Batayola and Diana Hermansen also had hits along with Megan Campbell.

The powerful Falcons were kept to only six hits on the day, but combined with two Roosevelt errors they took the game in seven innings.

The KingCo District Playoffs begin next Tuesday and Roosevelt will face Issaquah at their home field at 4 PM for the first game of the tournament.

Riders Finally get Rainout MakeUp with Kangs!
outfield run catch

After two rainouts, the Lake Washington Kangs finally made it to Lower Woodland for our final meeting of the season. We wedged this game in between our last official home game (Senior Day) and our regular season finale at Woodinville.

The Kangs opened the scoring with a big 2nd inning getting 3 big hits and taking advantage of a Rider error to score four. That was to essentially be their offense for the game as the Roosevelt team settled and held them scoreless the rest of the way. Unfortunately, the Kang defense was stifling also and in spite of 6 Rider hits, Roosevelt manage only a single run in their comeback attempt.

Sophomore Anne McGowan led the way going two for four and an RBI. Additional hits came from Juniors Isabelle Batayola, Rachael Murray and Diana Hermansen. The Rider defensive play of the game was a 3rd inning rundown of a foul fly ball to deep right field by Sophomore Julie Thompson, who never quit on it and snagged it just before the out of bounds.

At the time of this writing our next game at Woodinville had rained out so we will travel there on Thursday for 6:30 start for our final regular season game of the year.

Senior Day Ends with Win over Bothell!
2009 Riders Senior Day
Riders line up for Senior Day

The weather held up for our 2009 Senior day as fans, friends and family gathered at Lower Woodland for our final official home game of the year.

Traditionally, this is the day we honor our departing seniors.

The Juniors organize the team for the festivities and the seniors are introduced prior to the game and are presented with mementos of their years on the squad.

Our graduating seniors this year are Kelsey Paul, Nicole Kaul and Sierra Albrizio. All of these players have been in the softball program for four years.

Seniors with Gifts

Like other years we also take the time to introduce the graduating seniors of our opponent and this year the Bothell contingent had eight graduating seniors on their roster.

Before the game both teams lined up on the baseline in front of their dugouts as Coach Anton introduced first the Bothell Seniors and then the presentations to the Roosevelt players.

The RoughRiders provided roses for each of the Bothell seniors and gifts for our own graduates.

It was great atmosphere at Lower Woodland this day as three of the four fields had games scheduled and Ballard was also conducting their senior day festivities while hosting Woodinville on field three.

Once the ceremonies had concluded, pictues taken and congratulations given, the teams met with the umpires for pregame instructions and then settled down for their contest.

Post Game Wrap

The Riders took to the field and Senior Kelsey Paul took just 10 pitches to dispatch the Cougars in the first inning, backed up by solid field play by her defense. Roosevelt went to bat and despite hits by Sophomore Julie Thompson and Junior Diana Hermansen, the Riders failed to cross home plate.

Solid pitching and reliable defense by both squads kept the game scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when leadoff batter, Sophomore Anne McGowan ripped a triple to deep center. Diana Hermansen came to bat and she laid down a long bunt forcing the fielder to make the play at first for the out and allowing Anne to score from third.

The lead didn’t last long as Bothell answered in the fifth with a leadoff double. A miscue and a couple of walks allowed the tying run to score. The Riders nailed a second runner trying to go home with a tag to get the third out and squelch the Cougar attempt at the go-ahead.

The score remained deadlocked and in the top of the seventh Bothell loaded the bases with no outs. It looked kind of bleak for the Riders as the Cougar order turned to the top of their lineup. Batter one lined to Junior Isabelle Batayola at shortstop who flipped the ball to Anne McGowan at third for a fantastic double play that nailed the batter and the lead runner and put two outs on the board. The Next Bothell batter hit a hard grounder up the middle that Senior Sierra Albrizio snagged and force the runner out at second to end the top of the inning with the score still tied.

Diana Hermansen led off for the Riders in the bottom of seven and after going down two strikes ripped a double to center field. Coach Anton signed in a bunt to Sophomore Casey Bouldin who sacrificed herself to move Diana to third with one out. Kelsey Paul came to bat and with instruction from the coaching staff to hit to the right side nailed a high fly to right field. Diana Hermansen tagged up at third and went home on the catch for the score and the win!

It was a great finish to the 2990 Senior Day! The Riders will attempt to host the Lake Washington Kangs in a rainout make up on Tuesday at LW#5 if the weather holds up.

VIkings Down Riders at Lower Woodland
umpire

After three solid days of rainouts, the Riders finally got a chance to get a game off as they hosted the Ingelmoor Vikings at LW#5.

The layoff was not kind to the Rider and the rust showed in the first inning as 4 Viking Hits along with 2 Rider errors allowed 7 runs to cross the plate. Problems continued for the Riders throughout the game as they committed 3 more errors and allowed an additional 4 more hits as they went down to the Ingelmoor squad in a shortened 5 inning game.

Roosevelt used 3 different pitchers in the game trying to find a spark to ignite the team, but was unsuccessful. Highlights of the game were a 4th inning double and score by Junior Isabelle Batayola. Other hits were provided by Junior Diana Hermansen and Freshmen Megan Campbell and Megan Murray.

The Riders will try to regroup over the weekend as they look to host the Bothell Cougars for Senior Day on Monday.

Bad Weather Throws Monkey Wrench at Schedule!
rain

After being nice for about a week, the weather turned again and wiped out both our Tuesday, May 5th game at Bainbridge and our Wednesday home league contest against Lake Washington. At the time of this writing it is unknown if we will get the league game off on Thursday, May 7th or not.

Because it is so late in the season, we will not have another opportunity to make up the out-of-league contest with Bainbridge, so that game is lost. JV is having the same problem and all their rained out games have been cancelled and will not be made up due to time constraints and additional transportation costs.

If we cannot play on Thursday vs. Lake Washington our next available make-up date will be Tuesday, May 12th. After that our home field will not be available for KingCo play due to the scheduling of the Metro playoffs.

Please stay tuned to the website and email for updates and be prepared to play every day.

Riders Sweep Ballard in 2009!
screamball

Roosevelt met Ballard for the 3rd time this season at Lower Woodland as the Beavers hosted the Riders on field # 3 for their final contest of the year. Although the Riders had won both previous matchups by 10 runs, the Beavers were anxious to seek revenge.

Ballard went out on top quickly in the first inning on the strength of a Rider error that would have ended the inning allowing two Beaver hits to score two runs. Solid Beaver pitching kept Roosevelt off the board until the fourth inning. Fortunately the Rider defense settled down and also kept the Beavers from adding to their tally.

In the fourth, 2 Ballard errors combined with a big triple to the fence by Junior Diana Hermansen tied the game up at two. The Riders went ahead for good in the 6th on a score by Sophomore Anne McGowan driven in by Sophomore Casey Bouldin. Four Insurance runs in the top of seven iced the game as Anne McGowan nailed a triple, followed by a double by Diana Hermansen, her third multiple base hit of the day. The Riders win going away. Anne and Diana were both ¾ on the day combining for two triples, two doubles, and two singles to lead the Riders at bat.

Anne McGowan started the game for Roosevelt and was relieved by Junior Rachael Murray in the third. The two pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts and allowed only 4 hits and 0 earned runs.

The win guarantees a spot in the KingCo 4A district playoffs and Roosevelt will go to Bainbridge tomorrow for an evening out-of-league game.

Roosevelt beats Skyline in Bottom of Seven!
cheering

The Riders hosted the Spartans of Skyline on a beautiful spring afternoon. The team from Issaquah had a little difficulty finding the field on their first visit, so the game began about 15 minutes late.

Roosevelt took the early 1-0 lead on a score by Junior Isabella Batayola in the first inning after stealing a base and making it safely home on a right field base hit by Freshman Megan Campbell. Skyline answered in the 3rd and 4th with three runs, one caused by a Rider fielding error. The Green and Gold came back in the bottom of the 4th to tie it up with Junior Diana Hermansen stealing home on a bobble by the Spartan catcher. Isabelle picked up 2 rbi’s knocking in Junior Rachael Murray and Sophomore Julie Thompson.

The score stayed deadlocked from there until the 7th when Skyline threatened with a leadoff single. Roosevelt took out the next three batters and left the Spartan stranded at 3rd. Freshman Emma Kibort-Crocker led off for the Riders in the bottom of the last inning and after going down two strikes fought off the pitcher with three foul balls until she earned a walk. Isabelle then got her third hit of the day and moved Emma to second. Roosevelt then took their first out of the inning and Sophomore Anne McGowan came to bat. A slight bobble by the catcher on the third pitch sent Emma on a steal attempt to third base, but the throw from the catcher was mishandled by the Spartan fielder and Emma headed for home. The ball rolled toward the sideline and was picked up by the left fielder who threw home for the tag. The fielder however, was out of bounds when the ball was picked up so the play was ruled dead at that point and the run scored for the 5-4 Rider win!

Freshman Megan Campbell went the distance for Roosevelt in the circle tossing 100 pitches to 32 Spartan batters, striking out six.

Ballard will host the Riders on their field (#4) at Lower Woodland on Monday.

One Run is the Difference at Eastlake!
gloveball

Things didn’t start off well for the Riders on their trip to the Eastside to face the Wolves on the Plateau. The bus made it only as far as the 148th Ave exit on SR520 when it began smoking and spewing engine coolant. We pulled off on the side of the freeway and waited about 20 minutes for a replacement.

After an abbreviated warm-up the Riders saw themselves go down by 3 unearned runs on two errors after three innings. The Riders started back in the 4th with back to back hits by Sophomore Anne McGowan and Junior Diana Hermansen. Sophomore Casey Bouldin laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Anne and an attempted steal of second on a walk by Senior Kelsey Paul allowed Coach Anton to send in Diana for a second tally. That was the end of the scoring for both teams as their defenses kept further runs off the board and the Riders endure another 1 run loss, the second in less than a week.

Anne McGowan goes the distance, facing 25 Eastlake batters and giving up zero earned runs. Juniors Isabelle Batayola and Diana Hermansen were both 2/3 with Diana nailing a double in the 6th. Anne McGowan also posted a double.

The Riders return home Friday to host Skyline in their only meeting of the year.

Roosevelt beats Bulldogs at LW#5!
ballfire

Roosevelt hosted cross-town Garfield Bulldogs at Lower Woodland and found their bats to post a decisive victory on a beautiful afternoon.

Our freshman had a chance to shine like the sun did this afternoon. Freshman Megan Murray started the game on the rubber for the Riders, striking out 7 in 4 innings and giving up only 2 runs. Our other freshman pitcher, Megan Campbell closed the game pitching the last three innings and allowing only a single run.

Rider Bats were alive, combining for 12 hits on the day, producing 11 runs. Sophomore Anne McGowan led the offense with two hits including a 4th inning triple. Junior Diana Hermansen got a double and a single. Junior Isabelle Batayola and Freshman Emma Kibort-Crocker notched two hits each. Hits came all up and down the order with additional singles by Senior Kelsey Paul, Sophomores Casey Bouldin and Freshman Megan Murray and Megan Campbell.

Our outfield continued their solid performance from Friday, running down four fly balls including a catch by Sophomore Julie Thompson who alertly threw out a runner for a double play in the seventh.

The Riders will bring this intensity to Eastlake on Wednesday.

Defensive Battle in Redmond!
steal slide

The Varsity RoughRiders travelled to Redmond to face the second place Mustangs on a great afternoon for softball.

The Riders faced one of the top pitchers in the league and struggled early at the bat. Terrific defensive play however kept them in the game. A single unearned run by the Redmond squad in the bottom of 4 held up to hand the Riders a heartbreaking 1-0 loss.

Sophomore Anne McGowan went the distance on the rubber requiring only 64 throws in six innings to retire 23 Mustang batters. The Rider outfield played superb, led by Sophomore Julie Thompson with 4 catches. Junior Isabelle Batayola was on base 2 for 3 on the day and also had seven putouts and an assist. Junior catcher Diana Hermansen provided the only other offense for the Riders and also had a stolen base and threw out two Redmond attempts.

On Monday, Roosevelt will host cross town rival Garfield In an all Seattle game.

Newport Knights battle RoughRiders at Lower Woodland!
outfield run catch

The weather turned cold again but the rain stayed and the Riders hosted Newport for the first time at LW#5.

The Knights started out quickly and scored a run in the first, but the Riders fought back and tied it up in the third.  It was solid defense by both teams until the 5th when Newport nailed a couple of deep hits to bring in two.  The Riders were unable to answer and gave up a bunch in the top of the seventh to allow the Knights to win going away.

The offensive bright spot for Roosevelt was a 2/3 day and a run scored by Junior Isabelle Batayola. Senior Kelsey Paul, Junior Diana Hermansen and Sophomore Casey Bouldin also provided hits for the Riders.  Kelsey Paul started the game and threw 102 pitches to 27 batters over 6 innings and was relieved by Junior Rachael Murray.

The team will travel to Redmond on Friday to meet the Mustangs.

Riders Post a WIn at Home vs. Nathan Hale!
batter ready

We finally got to make up an early season non-league rainout as the Nathan Hale Raiders came to play at Lower Woodland.

The Raiders jumped on the Riders in the top of the first scoring two quick runs on two hits and a Rider error and then took the Riders out 1,2,3 in the bottom.

Freshman pitcher Megan Campbell kept her cool and held the Raiders scoreless for the rest of the game, striking out seven and giving up only a single walk and no earned runs in a full 7-inning game.

The Riders started their climb back with a run in the second and took the lead for good with three more in the third. They notched two more by the end of the sixth and won going away in seven. A solid offensive performance was lead by Sophomores, Casey Bouldin and Anne McGowan who both went 2/3 and had a double and a single each. Juniors Isabelle Batayola and Rachael Murray also notched two hits each for the Riders.

Senior Nicole Kaul played strong at first with 6 putouts and 3 assists spelling our usual 1st baseman Casey Bouldin, who was taking a turn behind the plate throwing out two runners in the contest.

Roosevelt Varsity will host Newport tomorrow while our JV will travel to the eastside for their game.

Issaquah downs Roosevelt in Seven!
translide

The weather was a balmy 70 degrees at game time as the Riders travelled out for their first ever meeting with the Issaquah Eagles. After a little difficulty finding the field, the Riders faced off against a strong team moving up from KingCo 3A.

The Eagles started out strong with a run in the bottom of the first, but Roosevelt stormed back in the second to score two on three hits by Junior Diana Hermansen, Sophomore Casey Bouldin and Junior Rachael Murray.

The lead didn’t last long as the Eagles pounded the Riders with 17 hits during the contest to the Riders six. In spite of the large number of hits, Roosevelt held plenty of runners on the bags and forced the game to seven innings, never giving up and playing hard to the end. Additional offense was provided by two hits by Junior Isabelle Batayola and another single by Casey Bouldin.

Rachael Murray started the game in the circle and was relieved by Sophomore Anne McGowan after three.

The Riders return home to Woodland park tomorrow for a non-league contest against the Nathan Hale Raiders (a make up from the pre-season rainouts).

Roosevelt host Woodinville at Lower Woodland!
pitch silhouette

It hasn’t been the greatest season so far for weather and fields. Already we have had several rainouts and most of the games we have played have been in less than optimal conditions. Arriving at Lower Woodland, we found our home field #5 unplayable, a victim of the overnight rains. The parks crew managed to get field #4 in shape for a Ballard/Ingelmoor contest and moved our game to Blanchet’s home field #6. They laid down the lines on the field at about five minutes to game time.

Senior Kelsey Paul took to the circle for the Riders and pitched the entire game striking out eight in seven innings.

The Riders only managed three hits on the day with singles by Senior Sierra Albrizio, Junior Diana Hermansen and Sophomore Casey Bouldin. The powerful Falcons notched 11 hits, but scored only 6 times as the Riders forced the game to a full seven.

Best defensive play of the game started on an error with a bad thrown to first from short. Casey got the ball and alertly tossed it home to Diana who tagged an inbound runner to deny the Falcons a score. Still alert she ripped a bullet to Freshman 2nd baseman Megan Campbell who now tagged another Woodinville runner trying to advance to second. What had started as an error finished as a spectacular double play to end the inning.

The Rider play gets a little stronger each game. Next week we play 4 out of five days starting with a trip to Issaquah on Monday.

Cougs Take out the Riders in 7 at Bothell
diving catch

The Rider faced another strong eastside team that spent the afternoon vacuuming up batted Rider balls. While the Roosevelt team managed to get the bat on the ball and only struck out twice the whole game, impeccable play by the Cougar middle infielders turned most of the Riders efforts back.

Sophomore Anne McGowan found her bat and went two for three with a run scored. Both hits were long line drive doubles to the fence. Junior Diana Hermansen also got a hit driving in Anne for a late score in the seventh.

The Riders still committed a couple of errors, but on a whole the game was much improved over our last contest. Freshman Megan Murray starting in left field caught 3 for outs and the defensive play of the day was a full tilt run for a catch deep in centerfield by Senior Kelsey Paul.

Anne McGowan also pitched the whole game, throwing 106 to 32 Cougar batters, striking out eight on the day.

The Riders will face the perennial KingCo powerhouse Woodinville Falcons at home on Friday.

Lousy Weather Cramps Rider Play at Ingelmoor!
wbatter

The weather was in the mid 30’s and the rain had come down most of the day, but since Inglemoor Highs School has 100% turf infield the late game went on as scheduled.

The cold and the wet certainly did not help players and the Riders could not get and continuity in their play as they went down to the Vikings in five. The only offense for the Riders for the day was provided by Junior Isabelle Batayola with a hit and a walk. She also stole 2nd base, but the rest of the squad was unable to move her around.

Handling the ball was also quite a chore in the cold and wet and the RoughRiders made 3 errors, helping Ingelmoor to their victory.

Junior Rachael Murray started for Roosevelt and threw 4 innings before giving up the ball to Senior Kelsey Paul who finished the game.

Hopefully, the weather will cooperate better foe our next contest at Bothell on Wednesday!

Riders Fall to Kangs at Everest Fields!
cartoon batter

The Riders went to the eastside to face off against the Lake Washington Kangs. Everest Fields are the new home for the Kangs home games and they were in excellent condition.

The Kangs started out hot with 8 hits combining with 4 Rider errors to rack up 11 runs in the first two innings.

The Riders kept their chins up and started finding the ball in the later innings and managed to drive in three runs before the end of the five inning contest. When the bats finally came alive both junior Isabelle Batayola and Freshman Megan Campbell had notched doubles and Junior Diana Hermansen went 2 for 3 on the day.

Sophomore Anne McGowan started the game in the circle for Roosevelt and was relieved by senior Kelsey Paul.

Since there is no game scheduled fro Friday this week, our next outing will be on Monday at Ingelmoor.

Regular Season Begins With a Home Field Victory!
ani pitcher

Finally! What a beautiful afternoon for a ball game. With the temperature in the mid 60’s, the Riders opened the regular season with a six inning 10 run victory over cross town rival Ballard.

The Riders started well, but left three on the bags in the first inning and failed to score. They began to fix that problem in the second, when Junior Isabelle Batayola sent a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score senior Sierra Albrizio from third. The Riders followed up with two runs in the third and a four hit, four run inning in the fourth.

In the fifth, Ballard got a runner on base and stole 2nd. The very next play shortstop Isabelle Batayola put out the batter with a hard toss to first. 1st baseman senior Kelsey Paul ripped a bullet to sophomore 3rd baseman Anne McGowan to tag out the runner going to third for a spectacular double play.

The Riders added the 10th run to end the game in the bottom of the 6th as the Riders loaded the bases up but the game was called by mercy rule. Junior Rachael Murray led the team on the rubber, facing only 19 batters in six innings, giving up just two hits and striking out seven. The Riders played errorless ball the entire game and allowed just three Ballard runners, none of which made it past second base.

Anne McGowan went 3 for 4 to lead the offense. Isabelle Batayola went 2 for 4 with one walk and two RBI’s. Hits came from everywhere in the lineup. Sophomore Casey Bouldin hit a double, freshman Megan Campbell laid down a perfect bunt, and additional hits were provided by Kelsey Paul, junior Diana Hermansen, Rachael Murray, and Sophomore Jamie Paul.

The Riders look to be the dominant Seattle team in KingCO 4A this year and will travel to Lake Washington on Wednesday to test their abilities against the eastside.

Squeaker in Sammamish!
transdive

After another false start we finally got a chance to get a game off. We got notice at 10 AM we were going to play, but we had to share the bus with the JV boys headed for Lake Washington. After dropping them off we arrived at Sammamish with only about 20 minutes for warm up.

The Riders started off HOT with 6 hits and 8 runs in the first two innings, when Sammamish buckled down and started their comeback. Four errors in the middle innings allowed the Totems back in it. Two final runs in the bottom of the 6th put the Sammamish squad ahead and they shut the Riders down in the 7th for the win.

Sophomore pitcher Anne McGowan struck out six and gave up only 4 earned runs as the rest came on Rider errors.

Junior Isabelle Batayola went 2 for 4 and scored two top lead the offense. Junior Diana Hermansen also scored twice with a double in the first and 2 RBI’s. Sophomore Casey Bouldin also showed power at the bat with a double and a single and two RBI’s. Additional offense was provided with hits from Anne McGowan, freshmen Megan Murray and Megan Campbell and a great bunt by Sophomore Hannah Bender.

The Riders let this one get away, but will look forward to their regular season home opener against Ballard on April 6th.

This is our 4th Rainout or cancellation to start this young season. Mother Nature is definately not cooperating. This time both the Varisty & JV teams were unable to paly due to the overnight rain. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find make up dates for these out of league contests.

RoughRiders Blank Ballard in Opening Warm-Up!
Bat diamond

We finally got our first game in against a young retooling Ballard squad. After cancellation of the Jamboree and our first tune up game against Nathan Hale, it was great to get out on the diamond to play and in spite of the cold weather, windy conditions and the threat of rain we got the game in.

The RoughRiders took the bats first as visitors on Field #3 at Lower Woodland and notched two runs in the first inning. Senior pitcher Kelsey Paul took to the rubber to start for the Roosevelt squad and struck out five in the first two innings.

By this time, the Riders had amassed 3 more runs and Sophomore Anne McGowan took over the pitching duties in the bottom of the 3rd. Anne struck out four in her two innings giving up only a single hit and no runs. In the mean time, Roosevelt notched 5 more runs by the top of the fifth to go up 10-0.

In the bottom of the 5th, Roosevelt showed the future, putting freshman Megan Campbell in the circle to close the 10-run save. Megan mowed down the next three batters with consecutive strikeouts to end the contest after five innings.

Anne McGowan led the RoughRiders offensively with 3 hits, including 2 doubles. Sophomore Casey Bouldin notched 5 rbi’s in 4 at bats. The Riders also stole 8 bases led by Junior Isabelle Batayola with three.

It was a solid first outing for the Green & Gold and hopefully a harbinger of things to come for the 2009 season.

Two In a Row!
rain

Our first preseason game against Nathan Hale suffers the same fate as the jamboree as the nasty weather continues this spring season.

The team is itching to get out on the diamond and actually play some ball.  We spent the day again indoors at Wilson Pacific working on sliding and throwdowns while the JV's took to the cage.  It doesn't replace however a good workout on an real dry field and certainly doesn't give us the benefit of actual play.

Our AD will try and get this contest rescheduled with Nathan Hale and we cross our fingers as we are due to play Ballard on Thursday.

Not a good start for the season.  The games were called off at about 11:30 AM due to unseasonably bad weather for the start of this season.  It actually snowed pretty heavy on Sunday and rained the rest of the night, so I doubt if there was a playable field anywhere in the vicinity.

We moved practice inside to Wilson Pacific and got in a little batting practice for the Varsity team and some great sliding practice for the JV's.  They are really coming along.

We'll try again tomorrow with the game agaisnt Nathan Hale at Lower Woodland, though there is light rain outside as I write this.

2009 Roosevelt RoughRiders

The Roughrider Softball team ventured up to Whidbey Island for their annual season kick off retreat. The team spent two nights at Camp Casey, lodging in the barracks of the old army base. The weather was cold and windy, but the players still had a great time being with the team and exploring the area.

The team went through various team building and trust exercises designed to let the players get to know more about each other and to build camaraderie before the season begins.

These exercises included games like ‘tele-pictionary”, lifeboat, blind trust and comparison lineups. We also did a little sliding practice and learned how to score a game.

Saturday night was capped off with the teams’ annual dance off and movie night.

Many thanks to the parent volunteers who journeyed with us and acted as chaperones for the weekend.

Roosevelt traveled to the eastside for their first playoff game in recent memory as they faced off against the Vikings of Inglemoor. The game was for a 6:30 PM start and Roosevelt fans came out to watch.

The Riders and the Vikings traded hits in the first inning but no runs. In the bottom of the second, Inglemoor took the lead, loading the bases with one out and managing to bring in two runs before Roosevelt shut them down. The Eastside squad added another in the third to go up by three.

Both teams tightened up and innings four and five remained scoreless. Roosevelt’s best chance cam in the sixth when Sophomore Isabelle Batayola and Senior Pai Pai Lam both got hits and the Riders had two runners with no outs. A short fly ball and a hit into a double play ended the threat by the Green and gold and there was no further scoring on the day.

The Vikings advanced with the win and Roosevelt saw their season end for 2008. Roosevelt continued their season by season improvement and looks forward to the revamped KingCo 4A conference in 2009, where another playoff appearance will be expected.

Riders and Falcons Battle to the end in the Final Regular Season Game!
batter pow

Our final regular season game was played in a night contest at Woodinville. First we had to complete the remainder of our game 2 of the season that was called in the 4th inning for rain. We resumed that contest in the top of the 4th and Coach Anton put in wholesale substitutions allowing our rookies to get their final innings in. As a result, every one of our players this year has earned their varsity letter.

Before the start of our next contest, Woodinville conducted their senior day ceremony and were kind enough to honor our seniors also. The Falcons made their presentation to their 5 departing players.

At 6:30, the final game was underway and Roosevelt stunned the Falcons by scoring two right off the top of the inning with Sophomore Isabelle Batayola ripping a triple as the lead off. Senior Pai Pai Lam forced the Falcon pitcher to throw 9 pitches in her at bat and finally forced the walk. Two outs later, Sophomore Rachael Murray ripped a single for the 2 rbi’s.

This apparently got Woodinville’s dander up as they responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning and two more in the 2nd to take a 4-2 lead. The middle innings were scoreless as the two teams traded a couple of hits but neither could find their way home.

In the bottom of the 5th inning, The Falcon lead off batter ripped a solo homer on the second pitch to add to Woodinville’s lead. The Riders settled down and kept the Falcons off the board for the rest of the inning which showed Sophomore catcher Diana Hermansen’s prowess as she threw out two Falcons trying to steal second.

The Riders turned the tables on Woodinville in the top of the 6th, loading up the bases with two out with singles by Junior Kelsey Paul and forcing two walks by Senior Amanda Pettas and Junior Sierra Albrizio. Pai Pai Lam hit a single to bring in a run, followed by Freshman Anne McGowan who beat the throw to first for another rbi. Diana Hermansen came to bat and ripped a big triple to the fence that cleared the bases for 3 rbi's to tally 5 runs for the Roosevelt squad in the inning.

Woodinville came roaring back in the bottom of six, scoring 4 and taking back the lead by two. The Falcons held in the seventh for the 9-7 win, but the Riders showed the KingCo champions they are not to be taken lightly as we head for our 1st playoff game on Friday evening versus Inglemoor.

Riders Clinch Post Season Berth with Victory over Beavers on Senior Day!
softball face

In our last home game of the season, as tradition warrants, the team took time to honor our three graduating seniors. Each of these players are 4-year lettermen. Seniors Pai Pai Lam in right field and #2 in the batting order Co-captain Amada Pettas at 2nd base and Co-captain Mehi Kokich at 3rd led the Riders to victory over the Ballard Beavers.

After a short pre-game ceremony, the Riders took the field and shut down the first three Ballard batters. Pai Pai Lam made an incredible catch running full tilt from deep right to catch a fly at the foul line just at the cut of the outfield grass and the dirt.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of three, When Freshman DH Casey Bouldin led off with a walk. A fielder’s choice took her off the bags, but placed Sophomore Isabelle Batayola safe at first. Izzy promptly stole 2nd and was moved to third on a single by Freshman Anne McGowan. Anne also stole 2nd to put both players in scoring position. With two out, Sophomore Diana Hermansen ripped a triple to deep left scoring both and the inning ended with the Riders up by two.

Ballard came back in the fourth with a single run by the Beavers. It was to be the only time they would cross our home plate in this contest. Roosevelt answered in the bottom of the inning on a single by Casey Bouldin that drove in Senior Amanda Pettas for the score. The Riders regained their two run lead.

In the 5th, Junior Kelsey Paul robbed Ballard of a double. A short fly to left dropped in behind shortstop as Kelsey dived to catch it. Seeing that hit was good, Ballard sent their runner to 2nd. Down, but not out, Kelsey found the ball and threw from her knees to Amanda Pettas at second for the tag and the out.

The Beavers made it interesting in the 6th, loading the bases with one out, but the Riders remained firm defensively, eliminating the next two batters and the Beaver threat with an infield fly catch and a strikeout of the next batter. Roosevelt closed out the game by retiring the side 1,2,3 in the top of the seventh, securing the 3-1 win and a trip to the post-season for the first time in recent Rider history.

Freshman Pitcher Anne McGowan started the game for the Riders, striking out 4 in five innings. The game was closed by Sophomore Rachael Murray, pitching her way out of a jam in the 6th and closing the last two innings with three K’s.

The Riders finish their regular season on Wednesday in Woodinville and will play their first playoff game on Friday, May 9th. Stay tuned for time and place.

An errorless game was played by both the Roosevelt Roughriders and the visiting Redmond Mustangs at Lower Woodland. T

ight defense kept the game scoreless through four when the Mustangs added a single run in the top of the 5th. The Riders could not answer and the Redmond squad added some insurance in the seventh to take the win.

The difference was the 9 hits by the Mustangs to the only 3 that were produced by the Riders. Sophomore Rachael Murray got two of those in her three plate appearances.

Junior Kelsey Paul went the distance on the rubber for the Riders, throwing 119 pitches to 33 Mustang batters, walking only 2 and striking out 4.

Next up, the Riders host the Ballard Beavers in a preview of the Playoff playing this Friday. It will also be the Riders last regular season home game and we will be honoring our seniors in their last official outing.

Juanita Wins Late at Woodland Park!

It was finally a nice afternoon to play ball as the RoughRiders hosted the Rebels from Juanita at Lower Woodland. Even the good weather would not bless Roosevelt with their long sought win over the eastside schools.

A 3-1 lead for the Riders entering the top of the sixth inning resulted in a five run onslaught by the Juanita squad that Roosevelt had no answer for. For the fourth time this year the Riders came away with a loss that should have been a win.

The team will continue to work to achieve that psychological victory they apparently need to perform to their obvious potential.

Riders and Vikings go to Extra Innings at Ingelmoor!
swinging batter

The Riders travelled across the lake to play Ingelmoor in a late start game. The two teams had mixed it up earlier in the season and the rematch was rated as a toss-up.

Inglemoor scored 1st in the bottom of the first inning and Roosevelt came back in the top of two, with a hit by Sophomore Rachael Murray moving courtesy runner Freshman Julie Thompson (for Sophomore Diana Hermansen) to second. Senior Mehi Kokich laid down the sacrifice bunt to move Julie to third and Junior Kelsey Paul drove in the run to tie it up.

The game remained scoreless for the next three innings as both teams played tight defense, punctuated by precise pitching and awesome defense. In the bottom of the sixth, the Vikings led off with a solo home run to take the lead 2-1, and the Riders then shut down the next three Ingelmoor batters.

In the top of the seventh it was do or die for the Roosevelt squad. With one out, Rachael Murray earned one of the few walks of the day. Mehi Kokich got a hit and an over throw by the Vikings allowed Rachael Murray to score to knot it up at two apiece. Roosevelt held the Vkings in the bottom of the inning pulling off a great double play by Freshman pitcher Anne McGowan and Sophomore first baseman Sis Odland to clear the bags and end the inning.

The game moved into extra innings. Roosevelt got a hit by Senior Amanda Pettas but were unable to convert. In the bottom of the eighth, the riders retired the first batter, but then a single and a double by the Vikings, scored the winner sealing the third one run loss to the eastside this year, two of which have been in extra innings.

It was good to have the Bulldogs back on the field after their Bus accident last week. Not all of their regular players were suited up, but the Bulldogs managed to field a team and started off by notching a run in the top of the first.

The Riders came back in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own and followed it up with a 8 run 2nd inning. In the 3rd, Senior Mehi Kokich scored the lone run on a towering centerfield sacrifice fly by Junior Nicole Kaul.

The teams traded a scoreless 4th inning and the Bulldogs notched only one in the top of 5, which ended the game on the 10 run rule as Roosevelt wins by a 12-2 margin.

The Riders were led by freshman Anne McGowan who went 3 for 3, notching a single, double and a triple with 5 rbi’s. Anne stared on the rubber for Roosevelt, handing over the ball to Nicole Kaul in the third. Nicole gave up only 1 hit and struck out five in the final three innings for the save.

In what will be the last regular season game for these two teams in the KingCo league, the Riders bested the Quakers 13-4 in seven innings. Franklin will move to the Metro 3A division next season and we will no longer see this home and away series each year.

The Riders started with a run in the second, two in the third, 3 in the fourth and 5th and 4 in the sixth for what looked like a sure 10 run rule early finish, when Franklin came back with four of their won to force the seventh inning. The Riders and Quakers traded scoreless innings in the seven and the final outcome showed a difference of nine runs.

Freshman Catcher Casey Bouldin led the Riders with a double and a single and 4 rbi’s along with a towering sacrifice fly to score Sophomore Megan Kearns. Freshman Anne McGowan went 3-4 and Freshman Hannah Bender robbed the Quaker big hitter by running down and grabbing a deep fly to right.

Sophomore Pitcher Rachael Murray started the game and pitched two innings, getting the win. Junior Pitcher Nicole Kaul pitched the rest, tallying 65 K’s in the final five innings for the save.

We now await the status of Garfield (recovering from their buss accident) to see if they will be available for our home game on Monday.

The weather improved a little to allow Roosevelt to host Eastlake on a well-groomed field at Lower Woodland.

The two teams remained locked in a scoreless tie through two and a half innings when a hit by Senior Amanda Pettas was followed up by an rbi single by Freshman Anne McGowan to put the Riders up by one.

An untimely error in the 5th allowed a torrent of 4 runs score by Eastlake, none of which were earned. Eastlake scored two more in the 6th, also on errors and finished with three more in the 7th to win going away.

Rider Freshman Anne McGowan led the team at the bat going three for three on the day for a great day at bat. Junior pitcher Kelsey Paul went the distance on the rubber, facing 36 Eastlake batters and tossing 120 pitches. Kelsey gave up only 2 earned runs in the contest, the rest being the result of defensive errors that kept the opponent’s innings alive.

In spite of the score, it was an energetic positive outing for the Riders who face Franklin on Friday in their final meeting as Franklin will move to the Metro 3A division in 2009.

Freshman Julie Thompson subbed in for Mehi on the base and was moved to 2nd by a single by another senior, Amanda Pettas. Junior Sierra Albrizio, coming of the bench laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Julie and Amanda to scoring positions. Lead off batter, sophomore Isabelle Batayola then got a hit to score Julie and tie the game up. Two batters later, freshman Anne McGowan lined a double to center field which scored both of base runners and Roosevelt went up by two.

The Vikings answered with one run in the top of the 6th and the score was 3-2 for the Riders heading into the seventh. Ingelmoor put their first two batters on base, but the Riders picked of the lead runner for one out and then pitcher Anne McGowan struck out another.

The victory was within reach when Inglemoor dropped two short back to back hits in the shallow outfield to score two runs to take the lead. In the bottom of the 7th the first two Riders were put out by good Viking defense. Then Roosevelt put the tying run on second but were unable to bring it home before the third out.

Summer League Ends - RoughRiders finish 2nd!
official field
Although we came up short yesterday in the summer league championship, I wanted to take the opportunity to congratulate all of our summer league participants for their efforts and performance.
During the summer league season and playoffs, we played 24 games and finished with a record of 16 wins, 7 losses and 1 tie for a .688 win percentage. We outscored our opponents 175-114 and dispatched some of the best teams to the loser’s bracket in the playoff tournament. Making it to the championship game was a triumph in itself.
24 players participated in at least one summer contest, including 5 incoming freshman. The summer league is a valuable opportunity to expand the horizons of the sport at Roosevelt High School, provide additional playing time and skill development. Student participation in the summer league helps to foster growth in the sport and strengthens the participating teams. Your individual participation helps not only yourself but all the players in the Seattle area and your own team members
My thanks to the parents and friends of the team, who were there to support us during the games. I look forward to seeing you all again in the spring when tryouts begin. If you are not participating in other athletic endeavors in the fall and winter season, please consider weight room, or other regular exercise routines to maintain your physical ability.
You will hear from me again after the New Year when we will schedule some informational meetings about the 2008 high school season and scheduling of the spring sports tryouts.
Have a great off season!
Thanks to Robin Lunsford, our JV coach for her help and support through summer league, Charlie Bendock and Mike Comiskey for running and administering the league, and of course George Hildreath, for maintaining the Woodland Park facility in excellent condition for our use.

Summer League is About to Start!
sun
The Seattle Summer Fastpitch League begins play on Monday, June 11th.
I have requested a full extra schedule to allow us up to 20 games in the regular season instead of the standard 10. The response has been good and we have lots of returners and several incoming freshman signing up to play this year. I wanted to make sure we had lots of games to ensure adequate available playing time for all players.
Several schools that have participated in the past are not fielding teams this year. I have invited the Garfield players to join us if they so wish. We will know shortly how many may avail themselves of the offer and play under our colors.
Teams that have signed up include Bainbrdige, Ballard, Sealth, Hazen, Newport, West Seattle, Shorewood, Mt. Si, Nathan Hale, Spice, Seattle Lutheran and Holy Names. With our two schedules, we will play everyone at least once. The schedule is already laid in on the schedule page and you will be able to follow the progress of our summer league players on the site.
The league was created to develop local high school talent in the sport of fastpitch and to enable additional playing time and skill development for athletes in the Seattle area.
Regular Season play will continue through the first week of July. A double elimination championship tournament will then be held with the final games being held at Husky Stadium later in the month.
Coach Anton is looking forward to an exciting summer season.

Get Ready for the 2007 Season!
New Uniforms 1
The 2007 Softball season will soon be here. If you have plans to sign up and tryout, please make sure that you have your Sports Packets turned in and signed off by Friday Feb. 23rdth.

The packet includes several documents, not the least of which is proof of insurance and proof of an up-to-date sports physical. For additional information contact Randi Olson, the RHS Athletic Secretary as soon as possible.

This is EXTREMELY important. One missing document, one missing signature could impact your eligibility to try out.

This looks to be a great year. I am expecting a good group of returning players along with an excellent freshman crew. Our summer league performance looks pretty good and I expect the competition for positions to be intense. We play in a tough league, but that should only help us become better.

Our new uniforms came in over the winter and several of our players tried them on for a few photos. Here is your first peek at our new Rider look for softball!

There will be an orientation meeting in room 242 on Thursday, February 15th at 3PM. I’ll be there to answer any questions you may have about the upcoming season.

Varsity & JV split with EastLake!
transdive
The Varsity RoughRiders faced the cream of the 4A conference in powerful Eastlake at Woodland Park. It was trial by fire for Freshman Pitcher Rachael Murray as she faced 30 batters in a little more than 4 innings in her first start. The riders managed 4 hits, including a double by Junior Amanda Pettas, but failed to score. Practice has paid off as the Riders nailed two Eastlake runners trying for extra bases. A great 8-6-5 combination by Tyler Hudacek, Isabel Batayola and Mehi Strain-Kokich killed a triple and Pai Pai Lam fired another across field from 1st to 3rd to Kelsey Paul to tag another at the hot corner. Eastlake attempted to test our catcher with a steal attempt by their first runner, but Freshman Diana Hermensen gunned her down at 2nd. The Team showed grit, but were overpowered in 5 innings by the team from the plateau.
Roosevelt got even in the JV contest defeating the Lady Wolves 12-11 in a great seesaw battle at Maple Leaf Playfield for their first win of the season. The Riders came out strong and went up early, and Eastlake fought back with a big third inning to take the lead. The Lady Wolves were up 11-10 in the 5th and time was running out. Big double play in the forth to kill the Lady Wolves comeback came on a line drive catch by Rebecca Anderson who caught the Eastlake runner off first with a throw to Tia Peschon. Two runs in the bottom of the 5th sealed the win for the JV Riders. Sophomores Marissa Anderson and Sierra Albrizio along with Freshman Megan Kearns all contributed triples to the Riders offense. Nicole Kaul threw 79 pitches in this 4 strikeout victory.
