RHINOS American Football: Welcome
RHINOS 2012!!!
|
Founded by four dedicated players who decided a gridiron team was needed on Brisbane's north side, the Rhinos American Football Club was established in 2001. We are now preparing for the club's 12th season in the Gridiron Queensland League; Grand Finalists for 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2011 in seniors and grand finalists in juniors in 2004, 2008 and 2011. A number of Rhinos American Football Club players have gained selection on the state and national gridiron teams.
Want to try American Football? Pre-season typically starts in May, with the opening game in last August. With 10-12 regular season games the final is held in November/December. We are always looking for more players and coaches. Want more information? Call David Begg (club president) on 0434 630 769. You can also follow us on facebook. See "Rhinos Gridiron".

Congratulations to the Juniors Rhinos on winning their first ever Sunbowl and completing their perfect season 14-0! The Rhinos defeated in a come-from-behind victory at the weekend when they faced the Sunshine Coast Spartans. The Juniors showed determination and resolve in their 17-16 victory as it was their first game where they were down at half time. To win in the biggest game of the season under the circumstances shows the great character these young players already have. Most of them will play in the Seniors division next year adding talent, atheleticism and youth to an already great team.
The Seniors showed their finals gitters and started slow against a seasoned Stringrays team who has won five of the last six Sunbowls. The Stingrays experience proved crucial when their Australian representive quarterback went down with a knee injury early in the game. The Stingrays led at the half 14-0 but the Rhinos came out strong in the second half driving the entire field and scoring staight away. The Stingrays did not take long to respond with a fake field goal attempt that led to an acrobatic touchdown. The Rhinos were able to continue to drive down the field to the 1 yard line before a fumble gave the Stingrays the ball. With a turnover deficit of four, the Rhinos were their own worst enemy. Final score Stingrays 20-7.

At the weekend both the Juniors and Seniors won their respective semi finals. The Juniors continued their dominance by beating the Wildcats without giving up any points in their 20-0 victory. RB Stuart Dingle scored all three touchdowns. The Juniors will play the Spartans in the the upcoming Sunbowl. They won both previous encounters during the season, most recently in the last game of the regular season 26-12.
The Seniors had an equally convincing win, who also defeated the Wildcats 34-6. RB Luke Jackson found the endzone three times with the help of excellent blocking by the line and the players downfield. Andrew Young received another TD from Matt Duncan as he wrestled for possession on a jump ball. A special mention goes to Junior Darrell Buckley for also playing the senior game and getting two fieldgoals. The Seniors play the Stingrays in the Sunbowl. The Stingrays are no strangers to the big game and defeated the Rhinos 21-0 four years ago in Sunbowl XXIV. A lot of the Rhinos from that game are still playing and won't give away another sSunbowl so easily.
