Post House League Season Tournaments Reston Little League will be participating in four District 4 Little League tournaments. Reston will submit one team each to represent its American and National Leagues. The tournaments are: The Starliper Tournament - This single elimination tournament includes the first place regular season team in the AAA divisions of Reston. It begins on or about June 23rd and continues until a winner emerges. Majors Tournament - Made up of 11 and 12 year-old players ( see selection process below ), these two teams will play in the District 4 tournament beginning on or about June 30th. District 4 splits the member leagues into 2 divisions, which play a round robin schedule. The division's first and second place teams will play a single elimination series of games in which the 2nd place teams play the first place teams from the opposite division and those winners advance to a winner-take-all game. The winner becomes District 4 representative to the State Tournament. The winner of States advances to the Regional in Florida, and the winner of the Regional advance to the Little League World Series in Williamsport. 10-11 Year Old Tournament - Made up of 10 and 11 year-old players only ( see selection process below ), these two teams will play in the District 4 tournament beginning on or about June 27th. The survivor becomes the District 4 representative to the State Tournament. Play ends at the State level. 9-10s Tournament - Made up of 9 and 10 year-old players ( see selection process below ), these two teams will play in the District 4 tournament beginning on or about June 27th. Play ends at the State level. How Are The Players Selected? Each house team will nominate players to attend tryouts. After two or three tryouts beginning around June 15th, the respective managers, with the advice of their coaches, will select the final roster. The Commitment Needed Being selected to All Stars is an honor that reflects outstanding play during the regular season and during tryouts. All-Stars is a wonderful and fulfilling experience, but it is a lot of work and should only be pursued by players and families who are ready to put in a lot of time. Most of these teams will practice 5 or 6 days a week occasionally twice a day for one to two weeks before the tournament. Once the tournaments start, the 9-10s, 10-11s, and Majors teams play five or six games in a very compressed time frame. Players availability to make the time commitment is taken into consideration when making team selections. What’s The Deal With Playing Time? The minimum playing time is one at bat or three defensive outs per game. That is very different from the regular house league season! The tournament substitution rules are strict and do not allow the kind of “free substitution” that we in Reston take for granted. Compared to our house league, All-Star play brings a whole new level of intensity and a realignment of goals. Every team in this tournament is out to win and the quality of competition is excellent. It is important that you and your son recognize and accept the differences that will exist compared to the regular season. Every player on these teams will be used to being one of the best on their regular season teams. While 12-14 players may be selected for the team, it is likely that the starters will get a vast majority of the playing time. If the substitutes can accept that, then All-Stars will be a wonderful experience for them. The additional training from some of the best coaches in Reston, improves the abilities of each player involved. Every family should talk to their child about how they would feel if the playing time turned out to be the minimum. What If I Disagree With The Line-up? The league selects managers who are positive, kid-centered and competent to lead an All Star team. You should feel free to talk to him about anything, but please accept his decision with respect to your son’s playing time, defensive position or place in the batting order. All-Star play can be one of the most rewarding experiences a boy can have. The players will all improve exponentially over a short period of time, face more pressure than they have ever seen on a baseball field, and succeed in spite of it! We wish all of the players the best and urge every family to think about everything outlined before committing. If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email the RLL President, Vice President or Player Agent. More tournament information is available on the District 4 Website.
