Tryouts Feb 19 and 26th. See Schedule Below

Reston Little League Skill Evaluation Schedule

WHAT: Reston Little League will be holding its annual skills evaluations on Sunday February 19th and Sunday February 26th in the Herndon Elementary School gym.  Players should wear sneakers (no cleats), bring their glove and favorite bat (if they have their own).  Helmets and bats will also be available at the gym.

WHERE: Herndon Elementary School - 630 Dranesville Road, Herndon, VA 20170. Please park in the main parking lot at the front of the school, and follow the signs to the entrance on the right side of the building (facing the building from Dranesville Road).

WHO: All players who are league age 8 through 12 are required to tryout during one of the scheduled evaluation sessions. (League Age is based on the players age as of April 30th, 2012.)

Players league age 7 with at least one Spring season at the A- Ball level (Machine pitch), who wish to be considered for the AA draft are also required to attend the skills evaluation.

Players age 7 who wish to play T-ball or A-ball do not need to attend the skills evaluation.  Players who are 6 years old or younger will not be admitted to tryouts.

WHY: The purpose of the evaluation is to assist the Player Agent, League Commissioners, and Team Managers in properly placing players at the level most appropriate for their skills and experience. The skills evaluation also helps the team managers’ plan for the AA, AAA, and Major league drafts.  All players at AA, AAA, and Majors are selected through a draft process.

WHAT DO THE EVALUATIONS CONSIST OF? Players will be evaluated on their fielding, throwing and hitting skills. Players may be asked to demonstrate pitching skills if they indicate that they are a pitcher.  It is probably a good idea to spend some time working on these skills prior to the tryout.  It may not be a good idea for the evaluation to be the first time the player has picked up a baseball since last spring.

HOW CAN MY CHILD DO WELL AT THE EVALUATION?  Wear appropriate baseball attire, arrive with plenty of time to sign in and do some light stretching.  Most importantly, relax, have fun and do your best.

WHEN:  Tryout Dates - Sunday, February 19th and February 26th at Herndon Elementary.

SCHEDULE:  In order to decrease wait times and make the sessions move faster – we are splitting the player pool into two relatively equal parts – with the top half of the alphabet assigned to come on February 19th, and the bottom half of the alphabet assigned to come February 26th.

PLEASE DO YOUR BEST TO COME TO THE ASSIGNED TIME SLOT.

That said – if your schedule prevents you from coming on the day (or the time) assigned – please come when you can.  It is important that all players league age 8 and older come to tryouts.  If you can't come on your assigned day, bring your player on the other date, ideally during the age appropriate time slot.

Winter Skills 2012 Registration for 5-6 Year Olds

Reston Little League is excited to announce the opening of online registration for our 2012 Winter Skills Program. This program offers players, managers, coaches and parents an opportunity to participate in skills training prior to the start of the 2012 spring season.   These sessions will be run by some of the very best managers and coaches in RLL and are open to all interested individuals registered or planning to register to play in Reston Little League next spring. Sessions will be focused on developing sound fundamentals and knowledge of the game. Players league age 5-12 at all levels are invited to attend and will be grouped by level, age and experience. (League age is your child's age as of April 30, 2012.)

The cost of the program is $40 for T-ball.  RLL has reserved gym space at several local schools and will conduct four Sunday afternoon sessions for each age group.

  • T-ball sessions will begin February 26th and end Sunday March 18th (Sunday, March 25th will be used as a snow date).  T-Ball sessions will be approximately 60 minutes long.  REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 10th.

You will be contacted by your player’s session leader approximately one week prior to the first session with the specific time and location of your session.  Please be patient as we must allow all applications to be returned before we can determine how many players are participating at each age/skill level.  Fees will help cover the cost of facilities rentals, insurance, and equipment.

Anyone that has managed or coached or would like to manage or coach is invited to participate as a session leader or assistant. New coaches will have the opportunity to work with some of our most experienced coaches.  Participation in this program will be taken into consideration when making manager assignments for the upcoming spring season.  We will also need a Volunteer Building Director (VBD) in the gyms at all times. If you are already a VBD, your participation would be greatly appreciated.  If you are interested in leading or assisting with a session, or acting as a session VBD, please contact our Safety and Training Officer, David Grossman at grossman@iit.edu

Reston National Wins VA State Tournament Title

In front of a boisterous crowd of Reston supporters, the Reston National All-Star team topped District 10 Champion SYA East 14-9 to win the Virginia State Little League Championship.  The last time Reston placed a team in the VA State tournament was in 1998, when that team also won the State title.

The team now heads to Warner Robins GA on August 4th to compete in the Southeast Region tournament for a spot in the Little League World Series in Williamsport PA.

Wednesday night’s game featured an outstanding performance from the Reston offense with Brian Lawson leading the charge during a 9 run 2nd inning that brought Reston back from a 5-1 deficit to a 10-5 lead. During the inning Lawson hit a two-run home run and a grand-slam. Lawson was on the mound for Reston in the 2nd-5th innings and was the game’s winning pitcher.

Every time SYA tried to fight its way back into the game, Reston answered with some additional offense. Antonio Menendez held SYA to one run in the top of the 6th and Max Kidd squeezed the final out as the dugout and stands exploded with cheers.
