Summer Travel Baseball

River Edge Little League Parents,

We are fast approaching the end of our 2012 season which means that playoffs are beginning, rain-out make-ups are taking place, and it is time to prepare for Summer Travel Baseball. This season, the weather has not been a major issue; we have completed nearly all the regular season games, due in large part to our volunteer coaches’ work on the fields. Playoffs for the Major and Minor leagues will begin on Monday 6/4.

K, A, AA, & Northwest will continue with their normal schedules through 6/16.

The playoffs of past seasons have been very exciting and we ask that you support your children and coaches. Schedules and results will be posted on our league website
www.relittleleague.org, please check the site for daily updates.

Over the next week, your managers will begin to have conversations with you and the players regarding interest in Summer Travel baseball, this should be a 2 way dialog, make sure you contact your child’s manager to indicate your interest and commitment for nomination. Summer ball is a more competitive level of baseball that is played in organized tournaments against other town teams. We have approximately 9 travel teams from age 12 through age 8. These teams are selected using player ratings assembled by managers and coaches, and then voted on to reach consensus amongst all managers. The ratings are based on their play during this Spring Recreation season. These teams are competitive and it is considered an honor to be selected to play.  RELL has taken great strides to involve as many players as possible at many different levels of competition. There is an additional fee for these teams and we ask that players who wish to be involved make a commitment to be at practices and games. Teams that we will enter into tournaments are detailed below with a short description of the tournaments that will be played as well as the approximate season and the commitment level that the team requires.  RELL wanted to share this information so that all families would have a better understanding of what Summer Travel Baseball is all about.

Again, your managers will begin to ask players about their interest in the coming days.
Many of these tournaments begin in the 3rd week in June which is why we are starting the selection process. Many players with interest will be nominated for multiple teams. Please listen to your managers who will explain your options and realize that being nominated does not mean that your child will be selected for a certain team. Please prepare your child for the possibility that they will not be selected to a team of choice or a team altogether. However if a child does not fit in at a certain level there may be other options available.
This Year players will be nominated and selected based on their Little League Age, which is their age on April 30 2012. This is the same method other towns select their teams which we will compete with in the summer tournaments.

Teams will be selected and announced by June 12th.

Notice to all Volunteer Coaches As a volunteer coach who has an interest in sport safety, you are probably well aware of the recent news regarding concussions in sports. New laws have made it mandatory for schools as well as towns to provide their coaches and athletes with educational information as well as concussion plans that are to be put in place for the player’s safety. In response to the state laws and to requirements for the use of facilities, the Recreation Commission has established a Concussion and other Head Injury Policy which requires all volunteer coaches to be trained in the prevention and treatment of sports-related concussions and other head injuries among student athletes. The Recreation Commission will host a Concussion and other Head Injury Prevention Clinic on Monday, March 19th at 7:30pm in the River Dell Middle School Auditorium. Those registering and participating in the clinic on March 19th will receive certification of completion and will have fulfilled the requirements of the Recreation Commission for concussion and other head injury prevention training. Please contact your league to register for the clinic. Those unable to attend the March 19th Clinic will be required to complete the Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports – the online concussion training for coaches through the Center for Disease Control www.cdc.gov/concussion/headsup/online_training.html and to submit the Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports certificate of completion to the Recreation Commission.

Sponsors

Without the wonderful sponsor support from the community, the fees charged to players would substantially increase. We ask that you thank the sponsor assigned to your child's team and that you patronize those community organizations that have so generously supported our League.

If you, or an organization you know of would like to sponsor a team this season, please contact us via email at relittleleague@att.net. The details on sponsor packages can be found on the Forms page of this website.
