Kearney JV Tigers Win NJ Hoop Starz Holiday Jamfest
The Bishop Kearney JV Tigers won the NJ Hoop Starz Holiday Jamfest in Englewood, NJ. This is the second year in a row that they have won the Tournament JV Girls Division Championship. In winning the championship again this year, the Tigers had to overcome a similar scenario as last year in their second round game. The Kearney Tigers were missing two of their starting players for their second round game against Newark High School. Caroline Thurlow and Cathy Wesolowski stepped into the starting line-up and helped Kearney beat Newark High 66-34. Thurlow scored 11 points and Wesolowski had a high of 8 rebounds. Kearney led throughout the game with tenacious defense. They also shot an amazing 61% from the field in the first half and 53% in the second half. Marianne Hanning led all scorers with 30 points on a combination of outside shots and drives to the basket. Freshman Point Guard Justine Vento added 12 points and 9 assists. Newark High made several runs to cut the lead during the game, but each time Caroline Thurlow hit a key basket to stop the run. Kearney beat Lyndhurst High School 52-29 to get to the second round. Justine Vento and Marianne Hanning each had 15 points. Jaclyn Grasso dished 5 assists. In the Championship game, Bishop Kearney beat the host school Dwight Morrow High School 68-36. The Tigers again used pressure defense and accurate perimeter shooting to repeat as Champions. Kearney was led by Erin Tacopina’s 22 points. She shot 11-16 from the field with 10 points on drives to the basket in the 3rd quarter. Tacopina was named the Tournament MVP. Kearney was able to keep the taller team off of the boards. Jaclyn Grasso and Cathy Wesolowski led all rebounders with 6 and 8 rebounds, respectively. Marianne Hanning had 13 points (3-6, 6-9FT). Caroline Thurlow had 9 points. Francesca Ingargiola scored 6 points off of the bench. The Kearney JV Tigers hope to keep building on their winning ways as they begin league play this month.

Redhook Basketball Coaches and Players Site
The coaches who have been involved with the Redhook Basketball teams are developing a new website. This site will be devoted to player development and Basketball IQ. It is important for basketball players to develop a strong foundation of basketball fundamentals and IQ , so that they can continue to improve their skills to get to the next level.
It is believed that the fundamentals of basketball have taken a backseat to "flash" and undisciplined skills. This is evident in many of the female players who get to the high school level. It is important that the young player is taught these basic fundamentals early in their basketball experience.
A player who has a strong foundation of the fundamental basketball skills will be able to continue to build on those skills. Without these skills, a player will have trouble competing at the higher levels.
Many in the women's game including the WBCA (Womens Basketball Coaches Association) have supported the need to develop fundamentally sound players at the grassroots level.
