REBEL DEFENSIVE FOCUS AND PHILOSOPHY
Defense wins championships. This statement, while uttered by coaches in every sport is most true in basketball. In no other sport can good defense turn into instant offense as quickly. It is for that reason that we consider our defense the starting point for our offense. Because we will play an aggressive, up-tempo brand of basketball, it is essential that our defense sets the tone by creating easy offensive opportunities. With constant ball pressure, people in every passing lane, and a commitment to contest every shot, we can insure that not only will teams struggle to score against us, they will in fact help us to score via turnovers.
This defense demands an incredible amount of energy, but as much as that it requires intense desire. Our defense cannot be played at less than 100% effort. There will never be a question about what component of basketball is most important in our program. If champions are what we aspire to be, then it is aggressive, attacking, team defense that will make us champions.
Other important defensive principles:
1. Talk, Talk, Talk
There is a tremendous difference between five good one on one defenders and a good defensive team. The thing that makes that difference is communication. By talking to each other on the floor, we evolve from five individuals to one team. Even the best individual defender will sometimes get beat one on one. By playing good TEAM defense, no opponent will beat us one on one. They will have to beat us one on five.
2. A Dead Dribble By Them = A Turnover for Us
When an opposing player picks up their dribble our players will instantly call "dead" to alert their teammates to deny away from the ball. As we call "dead" we will apply intense ball pressure to force a poor pass or get a deflection. The passing lanes must be clogged by Rebels whenever the word "dead" is called. Turnovers in these situations are the ones that most often turn into easy layups at the other end of the floor.
3. Turn The Ball And Keep It In The Corner
We want to push the ball towards the sideline and baseline, using the out of bounds line as an extra defender. Through use of stance, we will influence opponents into corners. Once there, we must keep the ball in the corner or on the same side of the floor. Offenses that can't reverse the ball aren't offenses at all.
4. Know Opponents Strengths and Weaknesses
This can be difficult to do when your playing an opponent for the first time, but by being perceptive before and during the game you can sometimes discover something that gives you a decisive edge. Does the player your guarding favor one hand when they dribble? Do they always turn over the same shoulder to shoot in the post? Identify the things your opponent is most comfortable doing, then take those things away!
5. Contest Every Shot
Teams will probably score on us every game, but we want to make our opponents work hard for every basket they get. If we are successful at this, we will frustrate teams into bad shots and wear them down mentally as much as physically. Nothing will ever come easy against our defense!
6. BOX OUT!!!
I list this last, but by no means is it the least important thing. We want to hold our opponents to none or one shot every time we're on defense. An important step to making this happen is boxing out every time our opponent shoots. Again, this goes back to communication. When an opponent shoots, the defender guarding them must yell "shot!". This alerts the other four players to box out. Offensive rebounds must be kept to a minimum. We will rebound better than every team we play, regardless of height.
