12's fall to Half Moon Bay
The RCN 12s went toe-to-toe with a powerhouse Half Moon Bay team and nearly pulled off a victory.
Jarrett Crowell put on one of his gutsiest performances ever after taking a bullet directly off his foot from HMB's cleanup hitter in the 1st inning.  After laying on the field for several minutes and icing his foot in the hopes of keeping the swelling down, he turned to his manager and said, "I want to keep pitching."  He proceeded to pitch into the 5th inning, giving up only 3 runs after 4 innings.  The 5th inning started in dramatic fashion when Kenney Belanger made an incredible catch in centerfield and immediately threw to first base to double off the runner who left early thinking the ball couldn't be caught.  With only 4 more outs to go and a 6-3 lead, RCN had high hopes of pulling off one of its biggest upsets.  But that's when things started to go wrong.  Ground balls seemed to find holes out of nowhere and HMB plated 5 runs, all after 2 outs were already made.  With the score at 8-6, the game was still within reach, but the offense couldn't find its groove as HMB's pitcher struck out the side in the bottom of the 5th.  The game was put further out of reach in the top of the 6th when HMB slugged a 2-run homer off of Daniel Molinari.  Although Matt Lopez started off the bottom of the 6th with a single to right after an incredible 8-pitch at-bat, the rest of the offense couldn't do much else as the game ended on a shallow fly ball to short with the score 10-6.
The offense started out strong though as Liam Clifford belted a 2-run homer in the first to peg RCN to a 2-0 lead.  Kenney Belanger slugged a 3-run homer in the 4th to put RCN up 5-3.  Jarrett Crowell finished RCN's scoring with a RBI double in the 4th to make the score 6-3 at the time.
Despite the loss, the 12 year-old team should be extremely proud of its accomplishments during this tournament.  We were one of the last 6 teams to be eliminated.  The kids worked very hard to get themselves ready and really dedicated themselves to the coaches and each other.  On behalf of Jim Clifford and myself, we would like to thank the kids for their effort, and the parents and entire league for their support.  What an amazing ride!
12's defeat Palo Alto
RCN 12s Pull Off A Stunning Come From Behind Win!
Taking a page out of the 10 yr old's game the other day, the RCN 12s fight back to
win 10-9 versus a tough Palo Alto National team.  After being down 8-2 after 3 innings,
the 12s crawl back with a run in the top of the 4th, 2 runs in the 5th, and then exploded
for 5 runs in the 6th.
The day did not start well for RCN though.  We went down 1-2-3 in the top of the 1st.
Emma Wangsness started on the mound for RCN, and despite pitching very well, gave
up a 2-run homer to PA's Yanagishiwa in the first inning.  The 12s came right back in the
top of the 2nd though with a Chris Ortiz 2-run homer.  But PA stole the momentum right
back in the bottom of the 2nd by scoring a run on a couple of singles and a misplayed
popup by the defense.  And the hammer came down when Yanagishiwa struck again and
bombed a 3-run homer in the same inning.  After shutting down RCN in the 3rd and wanting
more, PA tacked on 2 more runs in the bottom of the 3rd with a single, RBI double and
 sacrifice fly.
Trying to get the RCN team back on track, Ben Sehl came through with a solo homer in the
4th.  But that was just the beginning of the momentum shift.  The RCN crowd came alive
and the players picked themselves up after Kenney Belanger induced an inning-ending
double play liner to first base to end the 4th.  With a little extra hop in his step, Liam Clifford
promptly stepped up to the plate in the 5th and crushed a 2-run homer.
Sensing trouble, the PA team tried to fight back and knocked a solo homer in the bottom of
the 5th that barely scrapped over the fence.  Undeterred and knowing that this was their final
chance to score some runs, the RCN team dug deep into their hearts and put together a miracle:
- Ortiz started the inning with a double
- Jackson Brown followed with a single
- With one out and an 0-2 count, Belanger flashes some magic and bombs a 3-run homer to right
that puts the team into a frenzy
But that was just the beginning:
- Wangsness induces a walk to put the tying run on base
- Jarrett Crowell singles up the middle
- With 2 outs, Sehl loads the bases with a single up the middle
- Game 3's hero, Daniel Molinari, comes up to the plate.  RCN is down to its last strike, a 2-2 count.
He crushes a double to center, scoring 2 runs and putting RCN ahead for the first time in the game.
With everyone in complete mayhem, the team needed to refocus and play some defense in the bottom
of the 6th.  PA starts things off with a single.  Belanger regroups and gets the next 2 outs on a popup
to himself and a strikeout.  Yanagishiwa comes up to the plate.  Taking no chances, he is intentionally
walked, which puts a runner in scoring position.  The next batter knocks a single to left field, and
desperate to tie the game, the runner on 2nd is sent home.  Ben Sehl comes up throwing a strike to
Chris Ortiz at home and the runner is tagged out.  Game Over!
The RCN 12s next game is Tuesday, 7/7 at 5pm in Belmont against Half Moon Bay

The 12's played a great game, beating Menlo Atherton 10 -0 in a rematch of their

first tournament game.  They had redemption on their minds and definitely followed

through.  The bats were hot and the pitching and defense were amazing.

Jarrett Crowell started the game, and had a 4 inning, complete game shutout.  He
gave up 4 singles, 1 BB, and had 5 Ks.  The only threat that MA could muster was in
the 2nd inning.  Runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.  Jarrett struckout the next batter
and Carson Parodi made a spectacular running catch at 2nd base for the 3rd out.
Ben Sehl also made a couple of great catches in the outfield during the game to keep
 the momentum on RCN's side.
RCN jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning with an awesome 2 out rally.  After
the first 2 batters were put out, Crowell started the rally with a double off the left
center field wall.  Liam Clifford followed with a single and Ben Sehl loaded the bases
with a walk.  Daniel Molinari came up to bat and on a 1 and 1 count, he crushed the
next ball over the center field fence for a grand slam.
After a scoreless 2nd inning, RCN's bats came alive again.  Emma Wangsness and
Liam Clifford hit singles.  Ben Sehl came through with a 1 out double, scoring 1 run.
With 2 outs, Matt Odell hit a towering fly ball to right, which was misplayed by the
defense and allowed Odell to circle around the bases, scoring 3 more runs.  The hitting
was contagious as Jackson Brown followed with a solo HR to right center.  Matt Lopez
then tripled to deep right.  And Kenney Belanger hit the final run in with a single.  RCN
 led 10-0 after 3 innings.
MA was able to put 2 runners on base in the 4th after the first 2 outs were made, but
Crowell struck out the final batter to end the game.
RCN next plays Palo Alto National on Monday, 7/6 at 5pm in Belmont.

12's Fall to Hillsborough

The RCNLL 12's faced a tough Hillsborough team and were defeated 16-0.  The

Hillsborough squad showed strong hitting with 7 homeruns.  Kenney Belanger

collected the only RCNLL hit.  The Hillsborough pitching was stingy with only

three walks and striking out five.  Daniel Molinari, Liam Clifford, Jarrett

Crowell and Ben Sehl all made appearances on the mound.  The next game is

against Menlo-Atherton Friday July 3rd at 7:30 in Belmont.

12's Open with win against MA

RCN came out swinging against Menlo Atherton in the 12 year old game in Belmont.

RCN amassed a 5 to 0 lead after 3 innings due to solid hitting up and down the

order, capped by a 2 run homer by Ben Sehl.  MA rallied for 2 runs in the bottom

of the 3rd.   Both teams were scoreless in the 4th, then RCN added a run in the

top of the 5th.  MA responded with 3 runs on a leadoff solo homer and some

timely hitting.  Kenney Belanger provided some insurance with a two out solo

homer in the sixth, but MA wouldn't go quietly as they scored a run in the bottom

of the sixth and had runners on 1st and 2nd when Matt Odell caught the final out

on a deep fly to right center.

Kenny Belanger, Emma Wangsness and Jarrett Crowell threw well for RCN from

the mound, while Kenny 2 for 4 (hr, rbi), Jarrett 2 for 3 (BB, rbi), Liam Clifford

3 for 4 ( 3b, rbi) and Ben Sehl 1 for 2 (HR, 2 rbi) lead the offensive attack.

Saturday, June 27
9-10's Eliminated by Palo Alto

Jamie Kruger's clutch 2 rbi double with two outs in the fifth and

Renic Sloan's terrific outing on the mound were not quite enough for

the RCN 9-10's to hold off Palo Alto.  A four run top of the sixth

was too much for the Redwood City boys to overcome after all the

heroics of the day before.

Renic Sloan hurled three shutout innings to start the game as RCN

tallied two in the bottom of the first on a double by Tony Masetti,

single by Ben Simon, rbi ground out by Dylan Yapp and double by

Troy Siegler.  RCN added two more in the third on doubles by Jamie,

Ben S, a walk to Dylan, and an rbi single by Taylor Dawley to build a

4 to 0 lead.

Palo Alto used a walk and four hits to build a five run inning in the 5th.

The PA batters seemed to aim the ball just beyond the desperate reach

of the RCN fielders.  Being used to rallying from behind, RCN got singles

by Jamie and Tony and Ben's grounder was misplayed at first to score a run.

After Troy hustled to first to avoid a double play on his grounder, Ben S

snuck home for the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

Palo Alto worked a walk and single into the tieing run in the top of the fifth,

but a walk to Nico Rollandi, single by Kyle Pruhsmeier and Jamie's double

had the RCN team ready for victory.

Ben Knupfer got the first out on a comebacker, but Palo Alto used two walks,

two singles, a hit batter and a double to take the lead.  Not giving up, Dylan

Yapp hit a drive to left center that was snared on a fantastic diving catch.

Troy was able to reach base, but the next two hitters were retired by the

firstbaseman.

The boys should a lot of talent, determination and maturity during the

tournament and certainly represented our league and the city well.

9-10's win Thriller in Palo Alto

The RCNLL 9-10's withstood assault after assault from an outstanding Alpine

League team to win a thrilling 16 to 15 eight inning heart stopper in Palo Alto.

The cliche that it is never over until it is over ran true for the RCNLL squad

and has them advancing to a Monday night game at 7:30.  The wild game saw

ten pitchers appear on the mound and took over three hours to complete.  The

players from both teams should be congratulated on outstanding efforts.

Trailing 15 to 12 in the bottom of the eighth, the courageous boys from

Redwood City never quit and were rewarded with an amazing victory.  Tony

Masetti worked a one out walk, Ben Simon singled, and Dylan Yapp reached on

a fielder's choice to score a run. Taylor Dawley singled just past the diving

reach of the Alpine shortstop for another run.  Ben Knupfer singled to tie

the game and push Taylor to third as the noise from the cheering Redwood City

could be heard at Kiwanis.   On the first pitch to Kyle Pruhsmeier, the ball

escaped the catcher's grasp and Taylor scampered home with the winning run

as the RCN celebration began.

Jamie Kruger threw three strong innings, allowing only two runs, against a

lineup that had scored 27 times in its last game.  RCN got five hits in their

first three at bats, Tony Masetti, Ben Simon, Ken Knupfer, and Troy Siegler

but couldn't get an rbi hit to post a crooked number on the scoreboard.

Kyle Pruhsmeier stuggled with his control and Alpine posted a six spot in

the top of the fourth for an 8- 0 lead before Ken Knupfer  could close the

inning for RCN.  Ben then reached on an error and Heitel coaxed a walk

before Jamie Kruger belted a two run double.

Ben Simon allowed a double before striking out the next two hitters.  RCN

then showed great defense on a 2-5-1 pickup of the runner from third.

The RCN squad had Ben Simon start the frame with a double to left, Dylan

Yapp had an infield single,  and Taylor Dawley worked a walk to load the

bases.  Ben Knupfer's grounder was bobbled for a run and walks to Kyle

Pruhsmeier and Matt Heitel plated three runs.  The RCN crowd errupted

when Matt Baeza smashed a two run single to give them a 9 to 8 lead.  Jamie

Kruger and Dylan Yapp added rbi singles.

The hard hitting Alpine team battled back to take a 12 to 11 lead in the top

of the sixth on two doubles, three walks and a single.  RCN was down to its

last strike before Matt Baeza walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Two and a hour hours into the game and nothing had been decided.

Ben S retired Alpine without scoring in the seventh but had reached his pitch

count.  Walks to Ben K and Matt H were wasted when Matt B popped up.

Matt Heitel came in to throw the eighth and allowed two walks, a double and

a single for three runs, but stuck out a hitter to keep RCN's hopes alive.

Thanks should be given to all the Palo Alto Tournament staff for keeping the

game moving and providing water to the boys on each team.  The umpires also

did a great job.

RCN 9-10's fall to San Carlos

The Redwood City 9-10's lost to a strong San Carlos team 13 to 6.  Falling behind

9-0 in the first inning, RCNLL continued to fight the entire game.  Tony Masetti,

Renic Sloan and Ben Knupfer pitched in relief and kept the RCNLL hopes alive.

A walk to Matt Heitel, double by Taylor Dawley and perfect bunt by Matt

Baeza produced two RCNLL runs in the 2nd.  Ben Simon doubled, Dylan Yapp

walked, Ben Knupfer singled to right and Nico Rollandi circled the bases when

the San Carlos rightfielder dropped his sacrifice fly.  RCNLL had lots of other

baserunners with hits by Ben S, Dylan Yapp and Nico and walks to Renic, Dylan

and Kyle Pruhsmeier but they couldn't push across any other runs.  Renic, Jamie Kruger

and Troy Siegler all also added hits.  The next game is Sunday July 5th at noon.

The Redwood City 9-10's defeated Menlo Atherton in a hard fought battle 8 to 6 in Palo Alto.  Jamie Kruger pitched four strong innings, allowing 4 runs on three hits and 5 walks.  Kyle Pruhsmeier pitched the 5th and Ben Simon closed out a heart attack but scoreless sixth to seal the game.

After MA tallied twice in the first, Jamie Kruger answered with a homerun over the leftfield fence.  Ben S reached, Kyle and Renic Sloan walked and Matt Heitel had an rbi infield single to tie the game.  Each team was scoreless in the second, with Matt Baeza making a J.T. Snowlike stop to end the MA 2nd.  MA was scoreless again in the 3rd, but RCN got hits from Taylor Dawley, Tony Masetti and Dylan Yapp to produce a run, Ben Knupfer had an rbi fielder's choice and Matt Baeza boomed an rbi triple and scored on an overthrow for a 6 to 2 lead.

MA answered in the fourth with a walk, an error, two catches by Taylor Dawley in right, and two throwing errors to cut the RCN lead to 6 to 4.   RCN added another run on a single by Ben S and double by Tony.  Kyle allowed a single and three walks to give MA a run in the 5th and another single plated a second run before Ben K threw a strike to Ben S at the plate for the final out.  RCN added another insurance run on singles by Ben K, Matt Baeza and an rbi single by Ben S to enter the sixth with an 8 to 6 lead.

Ben hit a batter and walked two before striking out the side to end the game for the RCN group.  RCN plays again Wednesday July 1st against San Carlos at 7:30.

11's Eliminated in San Carlos

The 10-11 All Star team faced three tough games in three days and was

eliminated Monday night.  A tough 6 to 2 loss on Sunday left the boys

tired for Monday's contest.  All the players should be congratulated for

a great effort.

The 10-11 All Star team started the first three innings very tight and

found themselves down 3 to 0.  A six run rally in the 5th got them in the

lead against a fine Foster City team.  Brandon Moose started things off

being hit by a pitch, AJ Hamer, Bryan Knapp, Alexii Sigona, Blake

Carbonneau and Scudder Stockwell all had hits to score runs.   Foster

City tied the game in the bottom of the 5th.  Alexii pitched well through

the 5th, relieved by Bryan to keep RCN in the game.  Bryan hit a two run

homer in the top of the sixth for an 8 to 6 lead.  Will Jordan closed out

the last two outs (with a FC steal of home) to maintain the 8 to 7 win.

Super Bowl Teams Fall

The Minors Super Bowl team took on the defending champion Hillsborough team.  Although their bats were stymied for most of the game, the underdog RC National squad staged a dramatic comeback and nearly pulled off a stunning upset.  After falling behind 11 to 3, the Nationals ralled to score five in the bottom of the sixth and brought the tying run to the plate with only one out.

Sean Clark's booming triple knocking in two runs to get the rally started.  A Jack Wangsness hit knocked in a key run and Campbell Soutter's second hit plated another.  With the Redwood City fans going crazy in the stands, Hillsborough finally squelched the rally to prevail 11 to 8.  Kevin Hansen had two hits, scored two runs and pitched two scoreless innings to keep the Nationals within striking distance.

Thank you to John Crowell and his coaching staff for getting the boys ready to play and ensuring they had a good time.

The Majors Super Bowl team lost their tournament game.  More details to follow.  Thank you to Robert DeRossi and Glen Matsuda for preparing the boys for the tournament.
