Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ball Hockey?
Ball Hockey, runs on the same format as Ice Hockey and Roller Hockey. It is an organized league played on the cement surface once the ice sheet has been taken out of the Arenas. The game is played with one goalie and 5 players. Ball Hockey rules are generally the same as Ice Hockey, with a few exceptions. It is a fun and exciting sport for all ages. For more information on the game see the West Coast Minor Ball Hockey Association web site.

How are the teams selected?
The selection process is a draft system. Once all players have registered , players will attend a draft, where they will run through a number of drills and coaches will rate the players (confidentially) and then a draft will be held. After the teams are drafted, coaches will draw at random to select the team they will be coaching (from the Division they wish to be working from).

Can both Boys and Girls play?
Yes! The league is co-ed.

Can youths from other areas, participate? Like Ladner?
Registration is open to players from Richmond as well as South Delta (Ladner/Tsawwassen). As per our discussions with the Delta Minor Ball Hockey Association, players living in Ladner and Tsawwassen are free to play for either the Richmond or Delta Associations.

I’ve not heard of you before. How long has RBHA been around?
The league has been around for 8 years, but only since the last couple of years has it really taken off and interest in the community is growing.

How long is the season? When does it begin and end?
Teams usually play anywhere from 1-3 games per week with some practice time in between. Our home arenas are Minoru and Richmond Ice. There maybe some traveling required to other Associations to facilitate game play. On weeknight games, the younger kids are scheduled for an earlier time so they are home sooner. The games are 2 / 15 minute stop time periods for the younger kids, and up to 25 minutes for the older. kids. The season kicks off in mid April, once the ice is removed from the arenas and goes until June. The actual length of the season depends on whether a team makes the playoffs or not.

Are hockey skills / experience a “must”?
This is a fun, non-contact league and everyone is welcome no matter what skill level.

Are there referee’s for the games?
Two referees will be provided by the league for each game. Similar rules to that of Ice and Roller Hockey apply.

What equipment is required?
Mandatory equipment is a C.S.A. approved helmet with a full cage, hockey gloves, protective cup, kneepads (soft), wooden or composite hockey stick (no plastic blades), and shin pads. Soft elbow pads are optional.

I own a business and would like to provide some sponsorship support. Can I / How do I?
Sponsorship is always appreciated. Whether it is a cash donation, donation of gifts in kind or support of another means, feel free to speak with our Association Executive to see how you can best support our kids!

How do I get more involved with the Association?
We welcome any participation that your time allows. If you are interested in becoming a member of the executive and assisting with planning and such, or perhaps you have the desire to coach a team of your own? Some may wish to become referees or assist in a variety of other ways. The opportunities are really endless. If you have any time to offer, please contact one of the Executive or our Association Administrator who will in turn help fit you in. Any and all participation is greatly appreciated by the kids...remember, it’s all about them!

Once I register, am I guaranteed to be placed on a team ?
All registrations forms will be numbered according to date and time they are received. Each team consists of a maximum of 16 players and minimum of 12 players. With this being said, we will have to see how many players register for each specific division. once we have obtained enough registrations forms for a team in that specific division, then all other registration forms are put on a waiting list until we have enough to fill another team and so on. The number of teams will also depend on how many volunteers we have to coach as well. Meaning we have to ensure we have a coach for every team.
