SQUALICUM SOCCER PLAYER WANTS TO GIVE BACK
Squalicum Goalkeeper Looking to Give
Something Back to the Soccer Community
Morgan Waidelich, returning varsity goalkeeper for Squalicum High school, wants to help local kids get out on the soccer field this spring.
“Soccer has been a huge part of my life. It’s given me skills that apply to much more than just a sport,” said Waidelich.
Waidelich has been playing soccer since he was six years of age. He has been on Rangers, Skagit Storm, and Northwest United. As a sophomore, and varsity goalie, he helped the Squalicum team of 2008-2009 secure a state title.
As a senior, Waidelich has chosen to help kids whose parents may be struggling to pay for soccer as his culminating project. Waidelich has barrels around Bellingham at the Sportsplex, YMCA, Squalicum High School, and Christ the Servant Church on Lakeway Drive, for people to donate used soccer goods (cleats, shin guards, shorts, socks, balls). The barrels will be out through the month of February. Waidelich will help get this gear to local players.
He also wants to encourage people to help sponsor some children through the Blue Skies for Children program Little Wishes Enrichment program. Blue Skies for Children is a local non-profit charity whose goal is to raise hope and self-esteem by sponsoring enrichment programs and other essentials for homeless, low-income and foster children in Whatcom and Skagit Counties. Waidelich has a link to Blue Skies on his website; donatesoccergear.blogspot.com. The phone number for Blue Skies is (360) 756-6710. Soccer registration for the spring recreation season is happening right now.
“The economy isn’t what it was and many families have lost important jobs and may be struggling to pay to keep their kids involved in soccer,” Waidelich said.

Rangers Make 2010 Bellingham Bay Marathon a Success!
Rangers were out in force on Sunday, September 26th, and made quite a splash in view of the entire community. But it wasn’t at any of the usual soccer venues! In mixed weather, at the crack of dawn, twenty-seven Rangers teams, boys and girls alike, turned out to support the runners and staff of the Bellingham Bay Marathon. Over 400 Ranger volunteers participated.
For all 26.2 miles of the full marathon course, Ranger players, from U12 to U18 stood out in their best blue and whites, in drizzly conditions, to offer hydration, clean up, traffic control, and course monitoring.
Runner comments poured in immediately after the race, praising the enthusiastic and respectful Rangers youth volunteers. Said Half-marathon runner Megan Mellema: “I just wanted to tell you that I had the best time yesterday doing the half (marathon). I’ve never done one before, but it was amazing! All of the volunteers were the best. I felt encouraged the whole 13.1 miles. Thank you to all those wonderful people handing out water! I will definitely be coming back next year!”
There were even a few runners from the Rangers ranks. Roxy Klum from GU15 White placed 1st in the girls 15 and under age group of the half marathon with a time of 2:32:42. Molly Soltero, our GU15 Blue Coach ran the half marathon with her sister and finished with a time of 2:18:22. Congratulations to both!
There were a total of 1,920 runners that crossed the finish-line from all 3 races.
256 - 5K run
1262 - Half-marathon
402 - Full-marathon

New Uniform Selection Committee
Every three years the Ranger Board works with a group of parents to select the next Ranger uniform strip. This year, 2010, will be the final season (including 2011 Winter season) for our current PUMA uniform.
The Uniform Advisory Panel will meet in June after the new teams are formed. The Panel will discuss club uniform desires, requirements, and priorities. In August, the Panel will entertain uniform options from at least three different garment manufacturers. The Panel will then send its recommendation for the new uniform to the Ranger board. Final decision for the new uniform will be made by November 2010.
If you are interested in serving on this Ranger Uniform Advisory Panel, please send an email with your name, the Ranger teams or teams you are attached to, and your mobile or home phone number. The optimum size of this committee is 8 - 10 people; we will be seeking volunteers until May 31.

Letter from the WFC Rangers President
Effective immediately, Travis Connell will be stepping down as the WFC Ranger Director of Coaching.
Travis has done a tremendous job in the various roles and duties he has performed for us over the past 9 years. During a time of great change and tremendous growth he has been an invaluable asset to our program. I would like to personally, and on behalf of our whole club, thank him for the integrity and professionalism he has brought to the position and his tireless efforts in support of the Ranger program. He has been an integral part in making us one of the Top 10 premier soccer clubs in the State of Washington. I am pleased to announce that he will return to coaching in our program with the GU17 Gold team in the coming year, bolstering a fine staff with one of the top coaches on the West Coast. While we may have lost a Director of Coaching, but we’ve gained a top notch coach. He will be involved in assisting us as we refine our development program in the coming months and will be easing us through the transition to the new Director over the next few weeks..

GU18 Rangers Go to State Challenge Cup Finals!
Recently the WFC Rangers GU18 Gold team competed in the the State Challenge Cup. This tournament is one of the two developmental state level tournaments that is open to all boys and girls teams, in age groups under 11 to under 19, that have not competed in the Championships Cup quarter finals.
In five games before the final the team only let in one goal, which shows a team determination to defend. The girls also scored eight goals in that time and what is nice is that those goals were spread out amongst the team. It truly is a great achievement for this team to go out on such a high, especially with their age and other commitments they have had to make as they prepare to move on to College and the next phase of their lives.
The girls played fantastic in their final season but even more so in the this tournament and showed what a team can do when they stay together and compete. The team had some trouble with the injuries but soldiered on and kept playing for each other. The team should be commended for their willingness to help each other and the desire to play until the last minute. They showed a true grit to keep on going.

Soccer Complex Effort
Now is the time for action! RANGERS CONTINUES TO SEEK CLUB FIELD FACILITY
Rangers soccer club continues to focus on acquiring its own home fields and club facilities. Funds from the the Bellingham Bay Marathon, which is co-hosted by WFC Rangers soccer, is ear-marked for the long-term acquisition of the Ranger Soccer Complex.
Obtaining home fields and facilities for all varieties of training, development, games, tournaments, and soccer camps has been a goal of the Ranger Board and Development staff since the origination of the club.
To the Ranger club membership it is no secret that the need for well-surfaced and lighted practice and playing fields is extremely high, particularly during the busy league and state tournament seasons. The acquisition of Ranger club fields will ultimately benefit both our club and the entire Whatcom County soccer community.
Current discussions of growth and development in Bellingham and
surrounding Whatcom County invariably lead to questions and concerns
about where we will find the available land remaining for placement of
parks and outdoor sporting facilities such as soccer fields. We
encourage the Ranger membership to stay apprised of the growth issues
currently facing our Bellingham city and Whatcom County elected
representatives.

A COMMON SENSE REMINDER TO PLAYERS AND PARENTS
The recent incident involving an adult male approaching Rangers players and personnel at trainings and games has prompted us to remind all to be alert and use common sense in public areas. Note: the person of interest is now in police custody.
Please remind your players that when waiting or arriving at team practice and training areas to stay with others and in well lit areas. Do NOT allow players to walk off from the general, supervised area to “meet” their rides. Coaches, please do NOT leave players alone waiting for rides even if they say they “are on the way.” Leave another adult to supervise if you cannot wait for a late parent or guardian.
