Eastrern Football League
History of the League
League names: New England Football Conference, North Shore Football Conference, North Atlantic Football Conference, Eastern Pro Football Conference, EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE (EFL)
Formed in 1961, the EFL is the oldest surviving amateur football league in the United States and has participated in the states of Maine, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts. The EFL has gone through 5 name changes, 74 towns, communities and cities, and gained six national titles Mitchell Memorial Club of Middleboro in 1988 and the Marlboro Shamrocks in 1993 and 1994, and two titles in 1997 the American Football Association and the United States Football Association titles both teams from Massachusetts. A number of players have made the pro ranks, going back to the playing days of Butch Songin of Boston and Tom Dempsey of Philadelphia.
Twenty-one individuals have been inducted into the American Football Association (AFA) Hall of Fame, and 20 have been inducted into the United States Football Association (USFA).
Records show that only four players have rushed for 1000 yards or more in a 10 game season, the latest being Bernard Wiley of the Hockomock Colts in 1991, who rushed for 1192 yards. There are a number of other records set in the league, including the longest field goal 52 yards, most kicking points 92, longest pass interception return 103 yards, longest fumble return 99 yards, longest kickoff return 102 yards, and consecutive game winning streak 54.
