2010 Frequently Asked Questions
Rain City Volleyball Club 2010 Season FAQ
What is club volleyball?
Club volleyball is sponsored by USA Volleyball and is for the development of willing players to go beyond middle and high school training and become the best player they can be. Rain City is part of the Puget Sound region.

U16 - Players born on or after September 1st, 1993

How long does the season last for a typical Rain City club team?
Practices will start in December and will last until end of June for U-14 Tsunami, U-15 Mirage and U-16 Cyclones. Practices for U-12 Wavez will be December thru April. U-13 Rumble will begin in December and end in mid May. U-16 eXplosion and U-17 Reign teams will begin in December and end in May unless they vote as a team to attend a post season tournament such as Volleyball Festival.
How many teams will Rain City Volleyball Club offer in 2010?
We will have 7 teams this year:
U-12 Wavez
U-13 Rumble
U-14 Tsunami
U-15 Mirage
U-16 eXplosion
U-16 Cyclones
U-17 Reign
Please note that U-12, U-13 & U-14 will each be picking a new team; there are no incumbents. At the U-16 age level we have two teams this year, so we will have lots of positions available for new players to Rain City Volleyball Club at that age group. The difference between the two U-16’s teams is that Cyclones will attend Volleyball Festival in Phoenix (included in Dues) and eXplosion will decide after try-outs if there is enough interest to attend Festival. Each of the 16’s teams will have openings for 12 players each (total 24 players). There will also be 10 to 12 open spots at the U-15 and U-17 age levels. All returning players at any age level, must come and try-out again to earn a position on the team.
Where, when, and how often are practices held?
All teams will practice primarily at St. Edward State Park in Kenmore; however, Tuesday U-15 Mirage and U-16 eXplosion will practice at Cedar Valley Gym in Lynnwood. The U-12s will practice 1 night per week. Each team will practice 2 nights a week for 2 hours and will have Strength and Conditioning class one day a week for 1 hour at St. Edward Park Gym on Monday from 6:00 to 7:00 pm.

Do you offer Jump Training as well as Strength and Conditioning?
In 2009, Rain City offered Strength and Conditioning as well as jump training thru Maximum Sports and it was a huge success. We will continue with the program for 2010. Instruction once again will be by Maximum Sports Staff (http://www.maxsc.net/about.htm); Daniel Jahn. Training will be 1 day per week on Mondays from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm at St. Edward Park. Those that are interested can talk with DJ about training an additional day at his facility. The one day of instruction is included in your dues. If you choose a second day at Maximum Sports, there will be an additional cost to you.
How many players are on a team?
There are usually 10-12 players on each team. It is up to the head coach of each team to determine at tryouts how many players will be chosen.
How many tournaments do teams play and where are they?
Each team will play in approximately 2 tournaments a month, and some may be 1, 2, or 3 day events. Most tournaments are in the Puget Sound Region from Olympia to Bellingham. Coaches try to schedule tournaments every other week but sometimes teams will play back to back weekends. Tournaments are typically on Saturday or Sunday. Tournaments can start at 8 am and last until 9 pm at night. Teams can play from 8-18 games on single day tournament. U-12 team will play in the Puget Sound Region Power League once per month and the PSR Regional Tournament. There is a possibility that they might play in one other one day tournament during the season
Do Teams Travel out of the Region for Tournaments?
Yes, our U13s through U17s teams travel out of the Puget Sound Region to tournaments. The U12s team does not travel out of the Puget Sound Region.
Our U13s through U17s teams will travel to Spokane for a USA Volleyball National Qualifier (PNQ). PNQ is a 3 day tournament. Players will possibly have to miss a day of school to attend this tournament. The 2010 date for U13, U14 & U16 is March 19-21 (with teams arriving in Spokane on Thursday March 18). The 2010 date for U15 & U17 is March 26-28 (with teams arriving in Spokane on Thursday March 25). Please note that for the Spokane Qualifier players will need to provide their own transportation to Spokane. The hotel rooms for the players are included in the dues.
U15 Mirage and U16 Cyclones will travel to Volleyball Festival in Phoenix (www.volleyball-festival.com) June 26 thru July 4. Most all costs for Volleyball Festival except transportation is included in the players dues. We say most because players will need spending money for things like dinners or items they want to buy.
More information will be posted to the tournament page and team page once we have dates for tournaments from the region.
What is a tournament day like?
Many single day events will start early in the morning and last from 8 to 12 hours. In the morning there will usually be pools of 4 teams on one court for “pool play”. Starting about 2:00 to 2:30 in the afternoon, brackets are posted for “tournament play”. Tournament play is usually single elimination.
Two and three day events will be much the same, however, the first days are usually filled with pool play only and the last day is tournament play.
Coaches will give everyone the information regarding location and time to be at the tournament once they receive the information. Sometimes, coaches do not receive the final information until a couple of days before the tournament. Bringing food and water for the whole day is important as players may not leave the facility until the tournament for their team is over. Players usually bring blankets to stretch out on; while spectators bring fold up chairs to have a place to sit. Players are encouraged to bring homework to complete during down time.
Typically players will have one match off so that they can grab a bite to eat; however, there are times when a team might not have any time off because they have officiating duties. Players need to bring small amounts of food that they can just grab something and be able to run back to the court.
What is “Volleyball Festival”?
We at Rain City Volleyball Club love the philosophy and spirit of the Festival, and feel that players get more matches over the 5 day period than 3 days of Junior Nationals. For that reason, Rain City Volleyball Club is committed to support the Volleyball Festival.
The Volleyball Festival is a week long volleyball tournament held during the last week of June. The Festival also features many of the country's top teams that chose for various reasons not to attempt to qualify for JO's. It has been dubbed the largest women's sporting event in the United States. Nearly 800 teams in seven age groups attend the Festival. That equates to nearly 9,000 athletes, 1,000 coaches, 200 officials and countless numbers of volunteers who make the tournament run smoothly. Over a 5 day period teams will play an average of 14 to 17 matches.
About 1 out of every 6 teams goes home with a trophy for their playoff bracket. At the Festival there are booths, games, parenting clinics, coaching clinics, and contests. The best part about the festival is the friends you make with other teams.
For the 2010 Season, Volleyball Festival will be held in Phoenix, AZ. June 28 to July 3, 2009. Players will be asked to arrive for Festival on June 26, 2009 and may depart after 8:00 p.m. on July 3 or anytime on July 4, 2009.

Who are your coaches?
Our coaches are IMPACT certified, CPR certified and some are CAP certified with USA Volleyball. We also try to have an assistant coach for every team to give your player additional support and coaching.
Some of our coaches are with high schools and colleges in the area, and some work with the high performance camps for the region. Some coaches are Rain City Alumni that played with the club in the 90’s. We feel we have an outstanding coaching staff for this season to offer your player. Please see our staff/coaches section on the website.
What happens at Tryouts?
Rain City Coaches will run players through drills, skills testing, etc. during the try-out session. Coaches will talk with players and parents during try-outs in no particular order. Some players will be offered a spot on the team they are trying out for and some will be placed on a call back list; some could be asked to come to a try-out for another age level. Please know that not everyone offered a spot will accept that position. Also know that you might be called and offered a position if someone else turns their offer down. Below is a brief explanation of the signing process and when to commit to a club team for the 2010 season.
2010 Signing / Commitment Process:
All players who are offered a position with Rain City Volleyball Club that played for (incumbents) Rain City Volleyball Club last season (2009) may sign a contract and give their deposit on the following dates.
U-14 & Under Incumbents November 4, 2009
U-15 & Older Incumbents November 18, 2009
All players offered a position with Rain City VBC that did not play (non-incumbents) for Rain City Volleyball Club last year, will be able to give a verbal commitment the day of the tryout, but may not sign the contract and give their deposit to play with Rain City Volleyball Club until their signing date.
U-14 & Under Non-Incumbents November 9, 2009
U-15 & Older Non-Incumbents November 23, 2009
Please note that U-12, U-13 & U-14 will be picking a new team; there are no incumbents. At the U-16 age level we have two teams this year, so we will have lots of positions available for new players to Rain City Volleyball Club at that age group. There will also be 10 to 12 open spots at both the U-15 and U-17 age levels. All returning players at any age level, must come and try-out again to earn a position on the team.
