The last time Raiders Head Coach Michael Littleton hosted an open tryout 93 players were put through the paces. That was 2000 with a different team in a different city. Today the Raiders added 12 out of 18 players from their first ever open tryout. After the times were recorded and the reps counted the 2004 Rookies were incorporated into a "7 on 7" drill with the returning Raider players.

".....the returning players did an outstanding job running the tryout. Some of the guys really put in a lot of effort and I thank everyone that participated.   If these new players do the work and take advantage of their opportunities when they come it could be the best group of first year players we've ever had....."

Raiders Get First Round Win

The Tennessee Raiders defeated the Birmingham Diamondbacks 14 - 12 last night and advance to the second round of the playoffs. The Raiders did not play well in the first half against a very well coached and discipline Alabama team. The Diamondbacks took the lead going into the half 6-0. The Raiders defense forced a punt on the first possession of the third quarter and the offense marched the ball 66 yards to score on a 30 yard pass from Todd Droz to John "JB" Bowen.
With the score 7-6 the Raiders though they had put the game away late in the 4th quarter when Adonis McGinnis took a screen pass 22 yards for a score and a 14-6 lead. However, the Diamondbacks came right back on a deep pass and made the score 14-12. A two point conversion would tie the game and leave the Raiders about two minutes but the Raider defense that has been the backbone of the 2003 season stepped up and shut the door.
".....the Diamondbacks are a very well coached team with alot of class. They had a good game plan and played as a team. We played the worst half I have ever seen. Worse than that I am ashamed of how we reacted. We did not play as a team and definitely did not play like the championship team we are...." - Coach Littleton

The Tennessee Raiders won the Appalachian Football League Championship last Saturday with a 45 to 14 win over the Kingsport Renegades. Five different Raiders scored and tailback Adonis McGinnis led the way again with 95 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback, Todd Droz, ran his season totals up to 15 touchdowns, 5 interceptions, and 1,421 yards in seven games.
The defense was led again by defensive back Vic Wharton, who scored on a fumble recovery and snagged an interception. Kicker Chris Carroll gave the Raiders the lead at the half, 24-14, by hitting a 45 yard field goal. Carroll also booted a 74 yard punt. Both kicks are Raider all time records.
This win earned the Raiders the AFL Championship but they are far from done. The Raiders now have home field advantage in the first round of the EFA National Championship playoff and could have home field advantage throughout the playoffs if they can get past the Carter County Thunder this Saturday in Elizabethton. The Raiders finish the season where they started. The Thunder hooked up with the Raiders "up on the hill" at Bruce Wilkerson Field in August and was defeated in a tight battle 17-14. With a win the Raiders could have three playoff games at home at Loudon High School before traveling to Atlanta for the National Championship game.

"...I have to take my hat off to the Renegades. They have a lot of class. From what I have seen, maybe the best in the league.    They were a .500 ball team last year. They could be 7-2 at the end of this season and make the EFA playoffs. Coach Salyers has my vote for AFL Coach of the Year.
Even though we have already won the AFL we are in a must win situation this week. We know how hard it is to win on the road in the playoffs. We want the National Championship to got through Loudon and finish right down the road in Hotlanta. It is on us to make it happen. It's just week to week now...the most important moment is the next one..." -Head Coach Michael Littleton

The Raiders will return home to Dukes Field on November 8 for the first round of the playoffs. Opponent and kick off time TBA.
The bus will meet at the Turkey Creek Wal-Mart at 1:30 and leave at 2:00 this Saturday for the Carter County game. Kickoff is at 7:00.

With a 23 to 6 win over the #20 East Tennessee Warriors last Saturday the Raiders secured their place in the Appalachian Football League Championship game. Defensive Tackle, Max McCoy, opened the scoring in the first quarter when he scooped up a Warriors fumble and rumbled 32 yards for a touchdown. Receiver, James Moore, hooked up with quarterback Tod Droz for two touchdowns passes of 47 and 56 yards. Chris Carrol was two of three on extra points and added a Raider record 42 yard field goal.
Saturday, October 18th at 7:00, the undefeated #4 ranked Raiders will face the 6-1 #10 ranked Kingsport Renegades. The Raiders handed the Renegades their only loss for 2003 on August 30th, 40-18. The Renegades will bring in the #1 ranked offense in the AFL against the Raiders #1 ranked defense. Even thought the numbers are very close the Renegades will come in a 20 point underdog based on EFA Power Ratings.
With a win this Saturday the Raiders will own the AFL Championship and lock up home field advantage for the EFA playoffs. The Raiders have invited all area little league programs to be their guests at this week's game. Players can wear their jerseys to represent their team and receive Free Admission. Raiders Still Undefeated
The Tennessee Raiders stay perfect at 5-0 after defeating the Lee County 44-9. Adonis McGinnis rushes for over 225 yards and adds another 150 receiving, (official record to be posted later).
"...we have so many weapons on offense and defense. Players that can take over a game on both sides of the ball. Our offensive threats are taking turns. It's very easy to call the offense once that player establishes himself in the game. Adonis McGinnis was that player tonight and I have never, ever, coached a game where one player was so explosive. We still have plenty left that we have not exploited. Everyone just needs to be patient till it's their turn and then they need to make the most of it like McGinnis did tonight..."-Coach Littleton

Kingsport Renegades

The Tennessee Raiders defeated the Kingsport Renegades today 40-18 in what started as a shoot out. The Renegades struck first on a 20 yard reverse early in the first quarter. That would be the high point of the Renegades offense for the day. The rest of Kingsport's points came on back to back kickoff returns for touchdowns which has raised some concerns in Raiders special teams.
".....we did not fare well in the battle for field position today. Our coverage teams will need to step up starting right now. We started very slow overall but we made good adjustments and started to click on offense. We also managed to cut down turnovers and penalties from last week but we still need improvement in those areas. The Renegades played, for the most part, with alot of class. They have good team speed mixed with fare size and have the potential to develop into a threat....."

Raiders Win First Game
The Tennessee Raiders defeated the Carter County Thunder today 17-14.   The Raiders dominated the game but allowed the Thunder to keep it close with penalties and turnovers.

".....21 points. 3 touchdowns called back on penalties. All of their points were the result of our turnovers. We had as many penalties as first downs. It is ridiculous for a team to dominate another team the way we did and only win by 3 points. We had moments of greatness but we were about 1 tin can away from being straight garbage....we are going to demand perfection from ourselves and eliminate these mistakes....." - Head Coach Michael Littleton

Thanks for the Love
I want to say a special thank you to the players and family members of the Knoxville Summit that have sent me the very kind email messages over the last few days. I truly regret that we did not have the opportunity to get to know each other better and our time together was so brief. I wish all of you the best in everything, not just football. Remember what I said so many times, cherish every minute you have to play the game.
Thanks again and God Bless

Knoxville Summit Under New Management
The Knoxville Summit got a new owner 03-13-03. The former owner and Raiders head coach had a verbal agreement that was to be put into writing prior to practice beginning 03-15-03. The new owner did not want to hold to the terms and conditions of the established agreement and Coach Littleton walked away as the Summit head coach for 2003.
".....the Summit heavily recruited me as their head coach to go to a program that had never won a game to make them a winner and playoff contender. I guess their focus has changed. I am disappointed that I will not have the opportunity to do what I went there for especially since this new league the Raiders will compete in wiped out any possible conflict that would have certainly happened with the NAFL season. I wish them the best of luck. I still feel they have some solid athletes that deserve to win. I left negotiations open with the new owner but at this time I don't think an agreement will be reached for 2003...." Tennessee Raiders Head Coach Michael Littleton

Raiders Receive Warm Welcome to AFL
Michael Littleton & Commissioner Thomas
Marty Cox, Donta Goodwin, and Shawn Killebrew joined head coach Michael Littleton in representing the Tennessee Raiders at the AFL league meeting April 26. The Raiders concerns on AFL Rules and By-Laws #21, concerning pro players, were put at ease when pro players were defined as "a player that is being paid and at that time receiving installments over $20,000.00 a year." This will not effect the players that will transition from the Raiders roster to the RiverHawks and back. League commissioner, Jim Thomas, was presented with a Raiders "We Before Me" hat.
"....we are very excited about having the Raiders join the AFL. We are looking forward to working with an organization that has had so many years of operations experience to help us build up a strong league." -. AFL Commissioner Jim Thomas
