RWLL Jrs Softball battle to 4th place at States!

The RWLL Jrs Girls softball team traveled 7 hours out near Erie, PA to play in the PA State Championships the weekend of 7/30. RWLL opened on Friday by defeating Caln 6-3 in a late night game. After falling behind 1-0 in the 4th inning, RWLL exploded for 6 runs in the fifth inning and held on for the 6-3 victory. Kyla Crombie led the way with 3 hits and 3 RBIs. On Day 2, RWLL struggled in the afternoon against West Point, PA and an early 2-0 lead deteriorated into 15-2 defeat by the time the 7th inning ended. However, the RWLL girls showed their mettle by rebounding late that same night and defeated Worthington Armstrong in dramatic fashion, winning 5-4 in the 8th inning. The victory was one of RWLL's best games of the summer, and moved the girls into the final four of the State. Early in the game, back to back doubles by Crombie and Ali Birtwistle had given RWLL a 1-0 lead, and then back to back triples by Isabel Schaefer and Alexa Royle doubled the lead. However, Worthington came back to tie the game at 2, and then went ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the 5th on a big triple by their clean up hitter. RWLL had battled from behind all summer and again came right back in the top of the 6th when Birtwistle knocked in Crombie to tie the game and then ultimately scored on a wild pitch to take a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the 7th, Worthington tied the game right away and was poised to win with a runner on 3B until Morgan Campbell caught a sinking line drive in RF and then Kelsey McCue struck out the clean up hitter on a full count pitch to move the game to extra innings. In the 8th, Crombie led off with a double and ultimately scored on a bunt from Campbell and RWLL shut the door in the bottom of the inning near midnight to seal the thrilling 5-4 victory. On Day 3, RWLL played Carbino Club Little League from the Scranton area, who quickly built a 6-0 lead in the 3rd inning with the help of four RWLL errors coupled with a few key hits. RWLL battled back one last time, closing to 7-5 with the bases loaded in the sixth inning but that is where the game, and the season, ultimately ended for RWLL Jrs Softball. Carbino and West Point were set to battle for the State title 8/3. Playing for RWLL at States were Birtwistle, Campbell, Caitlin Connor, Crombie, Blake Massaro, Becky Maz, McCue, Siobhan Osborne, Royle and Schaefer.

The Morrisville team, which had won the Sections two years ago as 12s, opened this year's Sections with a strong 11-1 win over Upper Moreland and was a confident team coming into RWLL's opener last Friday night. RWLL persevered through three lightning delays before recording an 8-2 victory. In this game, leadoff hitter Osborne jump started the offense with three hits (2 runs, RBI) including a double while Crombie was 4 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. Price had a single and double along with 2 RBIs and Alexa Royle smashed a triple and scored a run. RWLL jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, also capped with a big two out RBI single by Erin Reid.

McCue and Schaefer were solid in handling the pitching duties through the two games, striking out 13 batters and allowing only 8 hits combined over 12 total innings. RWLL continued its outstanding defensive play, led by catcher Alexa Royle gunning out four baserunners over the two games.

RWLL is now 5-0 through Districts and Sections, outscoring it's opponents 39-5! The girls move on to the PA Jrs. State tournament which will be held near Wilkes Barre, PA from 7/31 through 8/4.
