Toronto Track & Field Centre
The competitive indoor track and field season kicked off last weekend as Quinte Legion Track & Field Club athletes wore District 'F' singlets at the Royal Canadian Legion Ontario Indoor Track and Field Championships.

This annual meet took place at the Toronto Track at Field Centre situated on the campus of York University in Toronto on February 11th.

Steve Holmes had the top QLTFC performance of the day with a fifth place finish in the 17 & Under 800m race. Holmes posted a 2:08.21 in his indoor track debut. He finished the day recording a time of 4:35.74 in the 1500m.

"Steve put forth a great performance considering this was his first ever indoor track race and he was feeling under the weather," said coach Penney.

Jordan Langridge and Jeremie Elit both had sixth place finishes at this provincial championship. Langridge's best jump of the day was 10.95m in the triple jump placing him sixth overall in the 17& Under age class. Elit, competing in the 15 & Under age class, cleared the bar at 1.40m to also place sixth.

"All of our athletes put in solid performances given the focus and scope of our training to date," said Penney. "After six to eight weeks off, we want our roster to focus more on conditioning rather than competition. There will be plenty of that as the season progresses. Right now, the meets are simply hard training sessions."

Quinte Legion athletes return to action on February 18-19 at the OTFA Juvenile-Senior Indoor Championships in Toronto.

QLTFC PRESENTS "TRACK STAR"
TS Logo
Are you a TRACK STAR?

The coaching staff and executive of the Quinte Legion Track & Field Club believes you are and have implemented a new program to recognize the performances of all club members.

TRACK STAR, adapted from the BC Athletics Junior Development Program and the OTFA Step up to Excellence Program, is a standards-based award program. For each age group and event, there are gold, silver and bronze performance standards.

Athletes must meet the standard in three events to be awarded a coveted QLTFC TRACK STAR pin. For example, if an athlete meets the bronze standard in two events and the gold in a third, he/she will be awarded a bronze QLTFC TRACK STAR pin. If he/she later attains the silver or gold standard in the two other events, the pin will be upgraded accordingly.

All meets recognized by the MTA, OTFA, and Athletics Canada are sanctioned for this program. Athletes should check with the coaching staff to verify the eligibility of other meets.

Athletes who attain a standard should provide the head coach with all relevant information.

To view the standards and an application form, go to Track Star.

“Adam is another exceptional athletes,” said QLTFC head coach Dave Penney. “Not only is he an excellent track athlete, but he has been making waves on the provincial triathlon circuit and he also plays ball hockey. He’s a very active young person who enjoys every minute of it.”

Rachel Maynard also picked up a bronze medal for the club in the atom girls 800m race. Maynard competed the two-lap race in 2:41 to claim third place in a very competitive pack.

QLTFC HOT IN WINDSOR
Quinte Legion Track & Field Club traveled seventeen athletes to Supermeet, the Ontario Track & Field Club Association's provincial championships at the University of Windsor on the weekend. QLTFC competitors medaled in eleven events and set numerous personal best performances at the three-day meet.

Provincial high school and Ontario Legion champion, Diana Boultbee, added yet two more provincial titles to her resume as she dominated the midget girls' 400m and 800m events. On the opening day of the meet, Boultbee easily cruised to victory in the 400m posting a 58.40 to give Quinte Legion its first gold medal of the meet. Her time of 2:14.95 in the running of the 800m on
day two resulted in her second provincial championship.

While Boultbee has demonstrated her dominance in the 400m and 800m on the provincial track scene, her goals for the season includes shots at two national titles at the National Legion meet in Burnaby, B.C. during the week of August 10-17. Over the past few weeks, she has working on race strategies and testing them at meets leading to Canadian championships.

Bantam athlete Steven Taylor also put on quite an impressive showing in Windsor returning with two silver medals and a bronze one. Taylor placed second in both the 800m and 1500m races with times of 2:29 and 5:09 respectively. In the high jump competition, the top three athletes all recorded best efforts of 1.46m, but Taylor had to settle for the bronze based upon the judge's decision.

"Steven had a textbook season," according to assistant coach Matt Brunsting. "His best performances came at the championship meet."

Dylan Semark added to Quinte Legion's tally with a silver and two bronze medals. This 13 year-old athlete had been hovering above the 1:00 mark in the 400m for the best part of the season, but just couldn't seem to break that barrier. Everything fell in place at the Windsor meet, however, as he chopped over two seconds off his personal best to record a time of 57.90 and claim a bronze medal.

"All season I've been telling Dylan to be patient and that it was there, but he really put forth an exceptional effort at Supermeet," noted QLTFC head coach Dave Penney. "This young athlete is going to be one to keep an eye on over the next few years." Semark added to his collection with a bronze in the 200m recording a time of 26.18 and a measurement of 9.77m was good enough for the silver medal in the triple jump.

Josiah Luttjeboer and Jennine Boyce both placed second in their respective steeplechase races. Luttjeboer, a second-year juvenile, completed the grueling 2000m SC in 6:13 medal while Boyce, a second-year midget, posted a 5:59 in the 1500m SC to claim their silver medals.

“Both Josiah and Jennine ran very well in the steeple despite less than ideal conditions,” according to Brunsting, an Ontario record holder in the steeple. “Conditions were not that great with a temperature over 30 degrees and poor air quality.”

Alison McWhirter, a second-year bantam, rounded out the medal count for the QLTFC with a bronze in the javelin. McWhirter showed great form as a novice in this discipline with a best effort of 18.18m.

“Ali is a newcomer to the throws, but I believe that she has great potential as she so well demonstrated this weekend,” commented QLTFC jumps and throws coach Tom Carr.
Other top-ten performances recorded by QLTFC athletes include: Lisa Kerry ( 7th in the 400m – 1;01.72; 7th in the 200m – 26.73); Stavros Alexis (7th in the discus – 19.74m); 10th in the shot put – 7.87m); Josiah Luttjeboer (6th in the 1500 - 4:13.50; 7th in the 3000m - 9:24.66); Jennylee Swallow (10th in the 200m – 28.74); Connor Mahoney-Ashberry - 6th in the 1500m steeplechase – 5:59); Lindsey Roth (8th in the 800m – 2:35).

Jessica Seguire, Kellie Boyle, Tamara Milligan, Carly King and Mattieu Morin all put forth strong performances in their respective events.

With the exception of Boultbee and masters athlete Lyn Barrett, the Quinte Legion athletes completed the outdoor season and will take some down time prior to the cross-country season that will gear up in late August. The local club will be offering two half-day track and field camps during the week of August 14-18 and a half-day cross country camp from August 25 to 28.
