Quinte Legion Captures 6 Medals at OTFA Bantam Midget and Junior Championships

At least 780 athletes, as well as numerous coaches, officials, helpers and parents crowded into the Toronto Track and Field Centre at York University Saturday and Sunday for the Ontario Track and Field Association Indoor Championships.  Quinte Legion entered 6 athletes who performed extremely well to capture 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze Medals.

In order of starts, ever smiling Gabrielle Roy(12) is now the Ontario Indoor Bantam Girls 800m Race Walk Champ winning gold in this new event for her.  Gabrielle also ran well in the 400m.  Mounting the podium to receive Gold and Silver Medals as another Champion, Adam Doxtator(12) won the Bantam Boys 3000m with a convincing run in 10:38.60, and he also raced hard to placed 2nd in the 1500m with 4.49.31 both near personal bests.

Arielle Fitzgerald(14) extended her winning streak by capturing Gold (1st/7) in the very competitive Midget Girls Triple Jump with 10.01m, close to her PB.  Coach Tom Carr put perspective on Arielle's feat, explaining that a number of older Midget Girls and Boys or even some Junior Boys and Girls competing did not jump that far!  Fitzgerald has now won the Provincial Indoor Girls Triple Jump for her age two years in a row.  She also placed 4th/14 in the Long Jump with 4.61m, a near PB.

Completing the medal winners Alex Johnson-Leroux (12) sprinted to win Silver in the Bantam Boys 400m dash in 1:10.52 and Bronze in the 200m near 31sec.  He also finished 5th in the 60m with 9.52.

Lisa Kerry(17) also sprinted very well in the 400m finishing 22/48 with 1:03.74 and 200m in 27.83 competing as a Juvenile in the older Junior age category.   Miya Hemmersbac competed in the Bantam Girls Long Jump, Triple Jump and 400m.

Quinte Legion Hauls in 8 Medals at MTA Indoor Champs
Adam

Seven Quinte Legion athletes hauled in eight medals and recorded numerous personal best (PB) performances at the Ontario Minor (Boys and Girls Ages 7-14) Track and Field Indoor Championships held 30 March at York University.

In this, the last of a series of large indoor meets with many Track Clubs from around the Province competing, Bayside Grade 8 student Arielle Fitzgerald (14) closed out an outstanding season by raking in yet three more medals.  She won Gold in the Girls Long Jump with a PB 4.73m, Gold in the 800m Race Walk with a PB 4:49 and Bronze in the Triple Jump with a near PB 10.02m.  Jumps and Throws Coach Tom Carr has been very impressed with Fitzgerald’s remarkable improvements in the last three months.

Another indoor standout, Adam Doxtator (12) continued this theme by earning Bronze in the highly competitive 1500m with 4:43.85, and he placed 5th in the equally strong 800m field with 2:21.15.  Assistant Running Coach Connor Mahoney-Ashberry caught up with unhappy Adam at the finish of each race, until Doxtator realized that he had reached his objective of attaining two big PBs in one day.  Steadily improving Gabrielle Roy (12) earned a Bronze in the 800m Race Walk with the best technique according to the Officials, and in a PB time.  Roy also ran a PB in the 400m.

Taylor Blair (9) captured two medals, both PBs, in winning Gold for her age group in the Girls 800m Race Walk and Bronze in the 800m run.  Laurence Roy (8) won Bronze in the 200m sprint for her age, and also placed 5th in the 60m with a PB. Complementing a strong team, Mija Hemmersbach (13) scored PBs in the TJ and the 400m.  Alex Johnson-Leroux (12) also ran very well in the 60m sprint and 400m dash.

Overall, an excellent indoor campaign.  New members are welcome to participate for fun and fitness during the outdoor season starting Thurs 3 April, 5 PM at the Bruce Faulds Track, Belleville.

Breaking News - Kirstin Mooney wins Scholarship!

Kirstin Mooney has accepted a full Scholarship from University of Detroit and she left today to take up residence.  Now an 18 year old Honour Student Graduate from St Theresa HS Belleville, Kirstin has been with Quinte Legion for many years.  She is a hard working sprinter, long jumper, hurdler and cross country runner.  Kirstin enjoyed another great year by competing in 2007 at the High School T&F & X-C School Meets including OFSAA. (42nd/230).

She made headlines at the BoQ X-C at Goodrich Lommis when she arrived late for her race due to an accident slowing traffic on the 401.  The run had already started, but nevertheless, Kirsted raced after them and still finished a gutsy 13th.  Thats part of why athletes get selected for scholarships.

She also competed at the OTFA Provincial T&F Championships at Ottawa and the Canadian Junior Championships at Abbotsford, BC in July.  Before the semi-final race, Coach Tom Carr offered her a free X-C season if she ran a PB in the 400mH.  Kir Moo
did just that registering a 1:05.94 a personal best to finish a very respectable 11th/24. She missed the final by less than .05 sec.

Kirstin has also contributed to our Club as an assistant Coach and she helped Tom run the City T&F Camp in 2006.

Congratulations Kirstin!   We now have three athletes on scholarship including Annabelle Pellerin at Univ de Syracuse and  Josiah Luttjeboer in Iowa

P.S.   I had to find a photo of you wearing NB Shoes to keep our sponsor happy.

Alex Johnson-Leroux also competed at York. Among very high level competition he placed respectably in the pack for the 60m and the 400m sprints.

Bill Revell Cross Country Meet

Under great conditions, about 100 runners of all ages gathered at the Goodrich Loomis Conservation Area for the Annual Bill Revell Memorial Cross Country Meet.  Quinte Legion organized the events and entered 17 runners.  Three QLTFC athletes promise to be hard to beat at future meets around the Province.  Congratulations to Amanda Blair (Atom Girls),  Adam Doxtator (Atom Boys), and Lindsey Roth (MTA Senior Girls) for winning gold in their respective running events.

Amanda improved her time from last year by 3 seconds and finished 10 seconds ahead of the second place runner.  At the start of his race, I thought Adam Doxtator was the rabbit. He cruised around the Atom route finishing 27.8 seconds faster than last year and a wopping 43.8 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor! Not to be outdone, Lindsey Roth improved her time from last year by an amazing 59.4 seconds zooming around the MTA Senior loops and finishing 6.2 seconds ahead of the second runner.

Brian Weatherall placed 4th and Matthew Doxtator finished 6th in the Tyke Boys event. Stephen Sutherland-Taylor ran to 5th place in the Senior Boys event.  Sierra Peck, Taylor Blair, Karissa Hambley, Arielle Fitzgerald, Linda Holmes, Andrew Aulthouse, Jocelyn Brethour, Aaron Doxtator, Fred Johnson, Paul Weatherall, Rick Leighton, and Logan Cole, also ran well in their events.  We were also fortunate to have Jeremie Elit on results and several QLTFC runners mentioned above and others as course spotters, rabbits and turtles including Alex Johnson-Leroux, Lisa Kerry, Paige Smith and Katrina Smith.

Well done to all Quinte Legion Parents, volunteers, and runners who conducted the Meet and participated.  A good training run along the trails.  On to Barrie next Sunday 23 Sep for the South Simcoe Dufferin Classic at Sunnidale Park.

Quinte Legion Head Coach Dave Penney Passes the Baton

For some, a mention of Dave Penney brings memories of Public School French Class. For others, their first dramatic experiences.  But for many more, he is synonymous with Track and Field.  After seven highly successful years as Head Coach of the Quinte Legion Track and Field Club, Dave Penney is handing over the baton.

In early 2000, he received a call from the late Bill Revell looking for some coaching help for the local Track & Field Club.  Dave agreed to start the fall cross-country season, telling his wife he would give it a year.  Fortunately for many, that year stretched to seven due to his dedication and love for the athletic development and achievement.

When Dave arrived for the first practice, there were just 5 athletes.  One of them was lanky young Josiah Luttjeboer, today the last remaining Club member of the original group.  A Grade 6 boy then, but this year Josiah graduated from high school, won a scholarship to a college in the USA and turned out to be one of the best Steeplechase and Cross Country runners in the Province under Coach Penney’s program.

Today the Quinte Legion has over 85 members from ages 8 to 23 and also 5 Masters athletes.  Owing to dedicated leadership, the Club has ranked in the top 10 of over 60 Provincial Track and Field Clubs over five years.  Coach Penney’s challenging year round training plan and continuing mentorship has inspired numerous Quinte Legion athletes to win medals at local, Provincial, National and International Meets.  Everyone in the Quinte Area has followed Quinte Legion champions through his informative newspaper articles and the QLTFC Website.

Dave is an avid runner and leads by example.  Other Coaches only have good words to share.  Chris Berneche recalls he and Dave joined the Club about the same time.  ‘‘There will truly be a void to fill with his absence.  Few people realize for every hour of coaching there are another three or four at home.  The fact that we consistently ranked top 10 in the province is testament to Penney’s commitment.  What stands out for Chris is that we never disagreed on any aspect of training.  No matter whether is was events, training plans, changes in routines etc, Dave pretty much read my mind on it all.’’

Dave Korell, a Coach with the Club until last year, declared that ‘‘Dave Penney has made an incredibly positive impact on the lives of many young student-athletes.  Working with Dave Penney as Head Coach of the QLTFC for most of his tenure was an outstanding experience and fun to build the Quinte area "track machine". The QLTFC will miss him for sure, but he has laid a foundation in the sport in Quinte that will be well directed into the future by current coaches Chis Berneche and Tom Carr.

Dave plans to pursue other back burner interests, looking forward to Tuesday and Thursday dinners at home.  He will also continue with Master's road running and cross-country.  In a farewell announcement, he thoroughly enjoyed working with an exceptional group of young people over the past seven years and wishes all the best in  future.  Good Luck Dave and thanks for outstanding contributions to Quinte Athletics.

The TNT meets provide opportunities for local athletes to participate in a fun community oriented event. These meets are not about winning, but rather about participation and achieving personal bests.

Logan Cole, Lisa Kerry and Kirstin Mooney opened the meet competing in the 100m. Cole placed first overall in 4 heats of the 100 with a time of 12.6, with Kerry and Mooney clocked at 13.0 and 13.6 respectively. Rachel Barnett placed 6th in 14.1.

Eight QLTFC athletes competed in the 800m race and the results were quite impressive.
