For the second consecutive year, Quinte Legion Track and Field member Arielle Fitzgerald was honoured by the Minor Track Association (MTA) of Ontario at the Annual Awards Dinner Saturday 24 January held at Brampton.  The MTA invites less than 30 Provincial Champions in the 13/14 age group to the Dinner along with Parents and Coaches.  Adding to the special night Mark Boswell and Kwaku Boateng, two famous Canadian World Class and 2000 Olympic Team High Jumpers gave inspirational talks and presented the trophies.

According to Coach Tom Carr, Fitzgerald achieved outstanding results in 2008.  She was the MTA Indoor Gold Medal Champion in the Girls (13/14) Long Jump and Race Walk, and she placed 3rd in the Triple Jump.  She also won the Gold medal in the Midget Girls (14/15) Triple Jump at the Ontario Track and Field (OTFA) Indoor Championships.

Arielle Wins Triple Jump Gold at International Youth Meet of Champions
Leaping 10.69m, Arielle Fitzgerald won a big Gold Medal at Toronto last weekend.  This annual International Youth Meet of Champions is the first indoor meet of the 2008/09 season.  In the Midget Girls Triple Jump, Arielle achieved an amazing result for the second year in a row.  Last year at the same meet she broke her PB by nealy 100cm in jumping 9.88m and later in the year increasing to 10.04m.  This year she broke her PB in all six jumps and increased her best by an incredible 65 cm winning in convincing fashion!  Coach Tom Carr put this feat into perspective by explaining that Arielle was in Grade 8 in the spring, but with the same jump of 10.69m, she would have placed first in the Senior Girls TJ at COSSA, and 3rd among the Midget Girls at the OFSAA Provincial Championships!.   Look up special article with more details in the Belleville Intelligence for Fri Dec 12th!!

Quinte Legion at Canadian Cross Country Championships

Quinte Legion enjoyed the last major Cross Country Meet of the year by running at Guelph in the highly competitive Canadian Cross Country Championships.  The weather conditions at the University of Guelph Arbretum were warmer compared to last year here, however,  snow covered and a very demanding course to run anytime.  15mm pins in spikes came in handy for this occasion.

Masters runs are increasing in popularity each year.  At Guelph 168 competitive Men and Women ran the same 8km route, then ranked according to gender and in 5 year age increments for individual and team awards.  Coach Ivann Dube (30) ran an excellent race to finish 29th overall and 5th/10 in the 30-34 age group.  Dave Penney finished 102 overall and 17/22 for the 50-54 herd, and a leaner Russell Doxtator enjoyed a great training day finishing 144th.  For the Junior Women, Marina Lowthian finished 154/179 and Domi Jamnicky place 163rd.  Adam Doxtator finished 176/184 in his second Canadian Championship, but still a great run for a 13 year old.

According to Coach and photo guy Tom Carr, just the experience of having run at the Canadian Cross Country Championships on a nice day was the most important point to remember for our Team.  See the News column for more photos and other X-C Meet results.

At least 780 athletes, as well as numerous coaches, officials, helpers and parents crowded into the Toronto Track and Field Centre at York University Saturday and Sunday for the Ontario Track and Field Association Indoor Championships.  Quinte Legion entered 6 athletes who performed extremely well to capture 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze Medals.

In order of starts, ever smiling Gabrielle Roy(12) is now the Ontario Indoor Bantam Girls 800m Race Walk Champ winning gold in this new event for her.  Gabrielle also ran well in the 400m.  Mounting the podium to receive Gold and Silver Medals as another Champion, Adam Doxtator(12) won the Bantam Boys 3000m with a convincing run in 10:38.60, and he also raced hard to placed 2nd in the 1500m with 4.49.31 both near personal bests.

Arielle Fitzgerald(14) extended her winning streak by capturing Gold (1st/7) in the very competitive Midget Girls Triple Jump with 10.01m, close to her PB.  Coach Tom Carr put perspective on Arielle's feat, explaining that a number of older Midget Girls and Boys or even some Junior Boys and Girls competing did not jump that far!  Fitzgerald has now won the Provincial Indoor Girls Triple Jump for her age two years in a row.  She also placed 4th/14 in the Long Jump with 4.61m, a near PB.

Completing the medal winners Alex Johnson-Leroux (12) sprinted to win Silver in the Bantam Boys 400m dash in 1:10.52 and Bronze in the 200m near 31sec.  He also finished 5th in the 60m with 9.52.

Quinte Legion Head Coach Dave Penney Passes the Baton

For some, a mention of Dave Penney brings memories of Public School French Class. For others, their first dramatic experiences.  But for many more, he is synonymous with Track and Field.  After seven highly successful years as Head Coach of the Quinte Legion Track and Field Club, Dave Penney is handing over the baton.

In early 2000, he received a call from the late Bill Revell looking for some coaching help for the local Track & Field Club.  Dave agreed to start the fall cross-country season, telling his wife he would give it a year.  Fortunately for many, that year stretched to seven due to his dedication and love for the athletic development and achievement.

When Dave arrived for the first practice, there were just 5 athletes.  One of them was lanky young Josiah Luttjeboer, today the last remaining Club member of the original group.  A Grade 6 boy then, but this year Josiah graduated from high school, won a scholarship to a college in the USA and turned out to be one of the best Steeplechase and Cross Country runners in the Province under Coach Penney’s program.

Today the Quinte Legion has over 85 members from ages 8 to 23 and also 5 Masters athletes.  Owing to dedicated leadership, the Club has ranked in the top 10 of over 60 Provincial Track and Field Clubs over five years.  Coach Penney’s challenging year round training plan and continuing mentorship has inspired numerous Quinte Legion athletes to win medals at local, Provincial, National and International Meets.  Everyone in the Quinte Area has followed Quinte Legion champions through his informative newspaper articles and the QLTFC Website.

Dave is an avid runner and leads by example.  Other Coaches only have good words to share.  Chris Berneche recalls he and Dave joined the Club about the same time.  ‘‘There will truly be a void to fill with his absence.  Few people realize for every hour of coaching there are another three or four at home.  The fact that we consistently ranked top 10 in the province is testament to Penney’s commitment.  What stands out for Chris is that we never disagreed on any aspect of training.  No matter whether is was events, training plans, changes in routines etc, Dave pretty much read my mind on it all.’’

Dave Korell, a Coach with the Club until last year, declared that ‘‘Dave Penney has made an incredibly positive impact on the lives of many young student-athletes.  Working with Dave Penney as Head Coach of the QLTFC for most of his tenure was an outstanding experience and fun to build the Quinte area "track machine". The QLTFC will miss him for sure, but he has laid a foundation in the sport in Quinte that will be well directed into the future by current coaches Chis Berneche and Tom Carr.

Dave plans to pursue other back burner interests, looking forward to Tuesday and Thursday dinners at home.  He will also continue with Master's road running and cross-country.  In a farewell announcement, he thoroughly enjoyed working with an exceptional group of young people over the past seven years and wishes all the best in  future.  Good Luck Dave and thanks for outstanding contributions to Quinte Athletics.

DOXTATOR CLAIMS HERSHEY 800M TITLE
Young runners, jumpers and throwers from all parts of the province competed in the Hershey Ontario Track & Field Championships at the Oshawa Civic Fields on Saturday. The Oshawa event was the qualifying meet for the Hershey North American Track and Field Championships.

Quinte Legion Track and Field Club’s Adam Doxtator headed into the Hershey Ontario Final on a mission. Last year, at the end of the meet, he found himself in fifth position posting a time of 2:36 in the 800m atom boys’ race. This year he set his sight on winning and lowering his time to put him in a good position to be named to the Region 1 team to compete in Hershey, Pennsylvania in August. Surging past a Centro Track Club rival in the final 80 metres, Doxtator met his goal stopping the clock in 2:22.

Adam set the bar high this year, and then proceeded to put the time into training to meet his goal. He put in some great base training during the indoor season and as the outdoor season began to unfold, it became readily apparent that he was going to be achieve his goal. He will now have to wait for about three weeks to see if he makes it to the North American Final.

Provincial meet winners are not automatically eligible to advance to the Hershey North American Track and Field Championships. Rather, they are entered into a regional pool to become eligible for selection to the Great Lakes Regional team that will travel to Hershey on August 2-5, 2007. The Great Lakes Region includes Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Ontario.

Senior boy middle distance standout, Dylan Semark set a personal best in the 800m with a time of 2:11.61 winning the bronze medal in his race. Dylan’s progress had been phenomenal over the course of the season, and he will now set his goal on the provincial championships to be held in July. In the softball throw, Semark picked up a bronze medal for a best throw of 160 feet 7 inches.

Amanda Pollock also placed in the softball throw. Competing in the 9-10 year old age class, Pollock’s best effort was measured at 68 feet 6 inches putting her in third spot overall. Teammate Sierra Peck was fourth with a throw of 66 feet 5 inches.

The Quinte Legion senior girls’ 4 x 100m team of Rachel Barnett, Arielle Fitzgerald, Kellie Boyle and Linda Holmes also had a third place finish while the atom boys’ team of Adam Doxtator, Anthony Chambers, Mitchel Chamberlain and Alex Johnson-Leroux were fourth.

SEMARK LEADS QUINTE LEGION AT MARKHAM INVITATIONAL
Great weather...excellent performances... and great camaraderie produced a memorable day at the 2007 Markham Invitation Track and Field Meet at the Nelson Secondary High School track in Stouffville on Saturday.

A mixture of Quinte Legion Track and Field Club veterans as well as many new faces produced some superb performances with Dylan Semark, Ben Jones , the senior boys’ and the senior girls’ 4 x 100m relay teams all coming up winners. In addition, six QLTFC athletes made it to the podium and nine athletes had top six finishes.

Second year senior, Dylan Semark led Quinte Legion’s MTA squad with two gold medals and a silver at the opening meet of the 2007 outdoor season. Semark, a standout for the club at last year’s Ontario Track and Field Association’s provincial championships, picked up where he left off handily winning the 400m in a time of 57.60. His top leap of the day, 4.81m was also good enough for a gold medal in the long jump. In his first attempt at the 800m in a MTA meet, Semark had an impressive posting of 2:16 to claim second place.

Ben Jones, competing in his first MTA meet, was equally impressive in the senior boys’ 200m hurdles. In his gold medal performance, Jones, a first year senior, was clocked at 31.50. He also had 5th place finishes in the long jump (4.16 m) and the high jump (1.25m).

Middle distance runner Lindsey Roth opened her final season as an MTA athlete in fine style wining silver and gold medals. She set personal bests in both the 800m and 1500m events in a very competitive senior girls’ division. Roth’s silver medal came in the 800m as she crossed the finish line in 2:32. In the 1500m race, she recorded a time of 5:17 which placed her in third position overall.

In atom boys’ action, Alex-Johnson Leroux was also a double medalist. Johnson-Leroux, the indoor 400m champion, will certainly be a contender for the outdoor title based upon his Markham performance. He claimed second place while setting a personal best of 1:08. In the 800m race, he placed third in a time of 2:42.

Rachel Barnett, competing in her first outdoor season with Quinte Legion, proved she can run with the best sprinters in her age group on the MTA circuit. Barnett’s posting of 28.30 placed her in third position in the 200m event. She also had a fifth place finish in the 100m final (13.80).

Second-year senior, Steven Sutherland-Taylor continued to be impressive as he claimed second place in the high jump with a best effort of 1.45m. Sutherland-Taylor, competing in the 800m, also had a fifth place finish in a time of 2:28.

Not to be outdone, the senior girls’ 4 x 100m team of Barnett, Roth, Kellie Boyle and Linda Holmes was clocked at 59.3 to also claim gold and the provincial title.
