Club Volleyball gives girls an opportunity to play organized volleyball from January through May. The extra time and training available from Club gives athletes more contact and a high level training.Other specific benefits: FITNESS. Gives extra training to help maintain volleyball fitness. Club Volleyball provides athletes with an elite training environment, and therefore they gain a greater understanding of physical and mental training. FRIENDSHIPS. Most athletes who play club develop close friendships with girls from other high schools. Some of these friendships last for years, and can make playing high school matches against club-mates more fun. Club volleyball players learn a lot about responsibility and independence. ACADEMICS. Their literature that demonstrates the strong connection between athletic commitment and academic success. Usually, volleyball forces girls to organize their time, and avoid long stretches of procrastination. Many club teammates are also top scholars, and an obvious “good” influence. COLLEGE. More than one thousand colleges and universities all over North America have women’s volleyball programs and generally athletes that have played club volleyball will have more success moving to the post-secondary level. Do I have to attend all of the tryouts? Yes, it is strongly recommended. Missing one tryout is OK, but you will be taking a chance that coaches don't see you as a committed player or that your skills won’t be fully assessed. What exactly are the tryouts for?Athletes come to the annual assessment/tryouts in an effort to make the team applicable for their age group for that particular Alberta Volleyball Association season. Athletes are encouraged to play in their appropriate age group. The Queens Club is committed to a certain number of teams, and therefore tryouts are necessary to select the players that best fit the team. Is it a onetime tryout fee, or do we pay again at each tryout? Yes, a onetime fee $10. What does the $10 registration fee cover?Your fee goes towards court rental for facilities, the cost of administering the online registration and promotional materials. What exactly am I being evaluated on?Athletes are evaluated in many different areas; natural physical ability, current skill level acquired, natural size and strength, attitude, work ethic, position, communication skills, potential, coachability, and ability to function within a team framework in a competitive setting are among the most important. Who does the evaluations at Tryouts? The evaluators are Queens Club Volleyball coaches who have various experiences in aspects of the game. Many coaches have been involved in the tryout process for several seasons and bring much needed experience for these important decisions. Will there be "cuts"? Unfortunately, due to the large demand of athletes, Queens Club Volleyball will not be able to keep all athletes in every age category. The number of athletes selected will be largely dependent on the number of athletes trying out. A typical team consists of 12 athletes. When will I know if I make a team?Following the final tryout teams will be finalized with a short team meeting. What happens if I am selected for a team? At the end of the last tryout athletes will be told whether they made a team or not. Teams will meet briefly to discuss some basic team functioning. Team gear fitting will occur, and players will be asked to chose their clothing package and pay for their clothing order. Package information will provided on the first day of tryouts. Check website for additional gear information. A cheque for the total amount of the clothing will be asked for at this time. This cheque not only pays for the athletes team gear, but it also shows the players commitment to the club. We've had problems in the past with players being selected and then leaving the club a couple of weeks later. This puts the club in the difficult spot of then trying to find players who weren't initially selected or increasing the fees of the remaining teammates. When do we practice? Practice times will be announced by the coaches during tryouts. All times are outside of school sports times, where possible. How often will we practice? Depends on your level and time of season. Generally on average the 13+14's go 1X/week, 15+16's 1-2x/week, 17+18's 2-3x/week Is there a league that we play in? No, just weekend tournaments which are on Saturday's and Sunday's. Tournament information can be found on the AVA web site www.albertavolleyball.com How long is club season? The club season begins after tryouts and runs into May depending on which age division the athlete is in. What is the Parents General Meeting? It's a night to provide information regarding the club, fees, payments, volunteering, coaches, and a few club policies will be discussed. Parents are free to ask questions throughout, but it should serve as a very informative evening for everyone. How long will the Parent General Meeting Be? About 1-2 hours total. What else goes on at the meeting? Each team will select a Team Manager, a Treasurer, and some coaches will have multiple parent jobs to be filled. Teams are NOT allowed to leave until these jobs are filled. Do players come to the Parents General Meeting? Yes if they like. |
