16U Quakes sweep Fairfield to Open Competitive Season
The 16U Quakes opened its competitive season with a bang, winning the Fairfield "Class Act" championship trophy June 1 after sweeping every game throughout the tournament.
Coach Angie Goularte later said every Quake player should be proud of the extraordinary team effort, noting the way the girls played with maturity and trusted each other, backing up plays, calling for balls, and making smart plays as well as spectacular ones at key moments. Among them: repeated highlight film effort at third base by Kelsey Fredriksen that included a stunning third-to-second double play to Megan Tokunaga; a diving catch by left fielder Robyn Levinson in the championship game; and a spectacular finish to a pool-play game, when shortstop Diana Fong raced into left field to catch a fly ball and fired home to catcher Camille Jackson -- a double play to win an international tiebreaker. Goularte also cited the timely hitting throughout the lineup, and the reliable Sunday pitching by all three Quakes pitchers.
About our Coaches
The newly-formed 14U Quakes are coached by Leah Belzer-Adams. Leah’s coaching philosophy is simple… defensive and offensive fundamentals intertwined with team play. The focus is the individual’s role in completing the team. Her youth and her passion for the game culminate in a great softball experience for her teams. She has high expectations of performance but also has the skill and experience to teach and communicate with each player as they strive to improve their game and “belong” to a successful team.
The 16U team is coached by Angie Goularte, the new softball coach at Diablo Valley College. Goularte previously served as softball coach at Contra Costa College, has been an assistant coach at St. Mary’s and has many years of coaching competitive softball teams at all age levels through the ABGSL Sting organization. Her goal is to field a highly competitive team comprised of committed, motivated players who desire to compete successfully at the high school and college levels.
About The East Bay Quakes
|
The East Bay Quakes are a new incarnation of an old powerhouse ASA softball organization. The Quakes originally were formed by long-time East Bay Coach Rick Chavez, who came out of retirement in 2006 to reestablish the team with a coaching staff of three former Quakes players. The Quakes in 2008 expanded to include both a 16U team -- now coached by Angie Goularte -- and a 14U team coached by Leah Belzer-Adams.
The Quakes' mission is to:
* develop advanced softball skills
* foster teamwork and good sportsmanship
* compete successfully at high levels of play.
