Original members for this season, Gina Santiago and Nancy Buckner represented Pv in the Public Speaking competition.
They also viewed the unique British Parliamentary Debate format used in the World Universities Public Speaking & Debate Tournament in Thailand this year.
I attended a two hour seminar on the British Parliamentary Style (bp), spoke to coaches and students on the event and viewed dynamic rounds, even voted on next years location, the university of Vermont.
All three of us were converts! This is the most progressive and dynamic format in the world. The students were very excited about it, and want to switch to this format. I will incorporate this format in my debate class: it promises to be a hit by other students on campus. Four two-member teams from different schools participate in each round of debate in this global format.
I will also be receiving free software that will allow me to host on and off campus debates. It will surely get the attention of schools in Texas.
What about Nancy and Gina? Besides having a wonderful time, they did very well in Public Speaking and both were credited for having a terrific sense of humor in their speeches.
Three other students made it to the final round; (Graduate students can also compete.), one each from the Universities of Alaska, British Columbia and Seattle.
Sixty teams participated in the tournament.

with interview and two Shell Oil debates to determine communication skills)
2005: 4th overall in Texas State Tournament (Parliamentary Debate, Persuasion & Imprmptu)
2004: 3rd overall in Texas State Tournament (Parliamentary Debate & Impromptu)
2002 2nd overall at St. Mary's (TX) in PUblic Debate
(Charles Brooks ranked in top ten in the Nation in Public Debate)
1997 Pv sweeps al Debate events and awards at UH
1995 Betty Iroku ranks 64 of 250 in Nation in Persuasive Speaking.
Gtonga M'bittuwe and Betty Iroku represented Pv and finished 5th overal at UH.
