Friday, May 2 PTR 12U Boys Capture Magnolia Tournament Championship The Push The Rock 12U Boys captured its second championship of the season at the Magnolia Basketball Tournament held Belton, Texas on April 26, 2008. PTR opened round robin play against BTK from Belton. PTR played an almost flawless first half of basketball, jumping out to a 16 – 4 halftime lead and rolled to a 43 – 13 open round victory. PTR was lead by L Martin who scored a game high 14 points. S. Moore added nine, with B. Dudley and Q. Wolfe chipping in six a piece. In round two, PTR faced the Copperas Cove Crusaders. As in game one, PTR got out of the gate earlier and never looked back. With balance scoring and tough defense, PTR scored its second win of the tournament with a 40 – 12 victory. In the third round, PTR opponent was the Copperas Cove Mavericks. In a game that would go back and forth for most of the game, PTR pulled away with three minutes left in the game and posted a 39 -23 win to advance to the championship game. In the championship game, PTR faced the Copperas Cove Crusaders. The Crusaders jumped out to a 12 point lead in the first half, but PTR cut the lead to seven at the half. PTR trailed will three minutes left in the game, but key baskets down the strength by L. Martin and a clutch steal by T. Artis help preserve a 39 – 35 win for PTR. L. Martin led PTR with 13 points. Wednesday, April 23 Fuller Headed to Angelo State Pflugerville senior Jasmine Fuller is heading to San Angelo to continue her basketball career as she has committed to attend Angelo State on a basketball scholarship. Jasmine helped lead Pflugerville to the quarterfinals of the UIL Girls State Basketball Tournament. Jasmine also received post season honors with her selection to the 14-5A First team All District Team. In addition to being selected to the All-District Team, she was also selected to the Academic All-District Team. Jasmine is the fifth PTR player to receive an athletic scholarship. Teammate Amina Sawyer and Schera Sampson will be attended Stephen F. Austin on basketball scholarships. Brittany Zamora will attend Howard Payne University on a basketball scholarship. Amanda Van Dyke will attend the University of Texas on a track scholarship. Congratulations Jasmine! Go Belles!
Sunday, April 13 PTR Players Showcase Their Talent at High School All Star Game Several PTR players showed their skills at the Greater Austin High School All Star Game played on April 11, 2008 at the Austin Convention Center. Seniors LaJoya Brown from Stony Point, Amina Sawyer from Pflugerville, Schera Sampson from McNeil, and Brittany Zamora from Vista Ridge were among 24 girls high players participating in the first Annual All Star game played prior to the Austin Toros season finale. The Toros are part of the National Basketball Association Developmental League (D-League). The four PTR players all played for the North team who beat the South Team 56 - 44. Amina Sawyer was voted the All Star Most Valuable Player. Sawyer and Sampson will be teammate at Stephen F. Austin in the fall. Zamora will be attending Howard Payne University, while Brown is considering attending Texas Lutheran to continue her basketball career. PTR wish our former players well as they take their games to the next level.
Saturday, March 15 PTR Players Enemkpali, Sampson Named to All Central Texas Basketball Team Pflugerville Freshman Nneka Enemkpali was selected as "Newcomer of the Year" as a member of the All Central Texas Basketball Team. Nneka, a 6-1 post average 10 points and five rebounds a game for the Panthers who finished 31-6 and advanced to the UIL Regional Girl State Basketball Finals. Senior Schera Sampson was named to the second team All Central Texas Basketball Team. Sampson, who played injured most of the season, average 15 points and nine rebounds, and five block shots a game. Sampson ends her high school career as McNeil High School all time shot blocker. Sampson will take her skills to the next level in the fall as a Lady Lumberjack at Stephen F. Austin University. Tuesday, March 11 Sawyer Named to All-State Academic Team Amina Sawyer was named to the 2007-08 Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) 5A Basketball Academic All-State Team. Sawyer, a senior at Pflugerville High School, help led the Pflugerville Lady Panthers to the UIL High School Girls Basketball Regional Finals. Amina will be attending Stephen F. Austin University, in Nagadoches, Texas in the fall.Former PTR player and Thrall High School standout Christian Daniels was also named to the 1A Academic All State Team. Christian will be attending Texas Tech University in Lubbock in the fall.Congratulations to Ms. Sawyer and Ms. Daniels for their academic accomplishment. The PTR family wishes both Amina and Christian the best. We are extremely proud of both of you! Tuesday, February 5 PTR Zamora Howard Payne Bound PTR and Vista Ridge guard Brittany Zamora has committed to Howard Payne College in Brownwood, Texas. The 5'6 guard will bring her skills to one of the top Division III Women's Basketball programs in the country. Zamora was a four-year starter at Vista Ridge High School in Cedar Park, Texas. Zamora was named "Newcomer of the Year" in District 25-4A in 2004-05. Zamora has also been selected to the All-District Team since 2004. Zamora is Vista Ridge all time scoring leader. PTR is extremely proud of Brittany’s accomplishments and look forward to having an outstanding career at Howard Payne.
Monday, January 28 PTR's Sampson Nominated for McDonald's All-American Team McNeil High School and PTR's Schera Sampson is a 2008 McDonald's All-American nominee. Sampson, who is averaging 15 points, nine rebounds, five blocks and three steals per game for the Mavericks this season, holds several records for the team - including most steals in a game (12), blocks (12) and most blocks in a season with 144 and during the current District 14-5A race. The senior has notched 17 double-doubles thus far and notched a triple-double against Stony Point January 8th. Sampson will be included in a pool of about 800 nominees for both the boys and girls teams. The final 20 players - 10 on the West team and 10 on the East - will be announced in late January or early February. The McDonald's All-American games are March 26 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Former members of the All-American team include Michael Jordan, Candice Parker and LeBron James. Congratulations Schera on this great accomplishment! The PTR family is extremely proud of you! Monday, January 28 VanDyke Headed to the "40 Arces" In Fall 2008 PTR and Connally High School senior Amanda VanDyke has made a verbal commitment to compete with the University of Texas track and field team, beginning in the fall of 2008.VanDyke was a double-medal winner at the UIL state track and field meet last spring, earning gold in the Class 4A shot put and bronze in the discus. VanDyke also has been a key member of Connally's basketball team the past two seasons. Amanda is one of the core PTR players of the PTR 17U team who begin with PTR as a fifth grader. Amanda, job well done! It shows that PTR players are multi-talented in several sports, but more importantly are academically strong in the classroom. We are extremely proud of you and wish you the best at the "40 Acres." Wednesday, November 14 Sampson and Sawyer Sign Letter of Intent to Attend Stephen F. Austin in the Fall Schera Sampson and Amina Sawyer have played basketball with PTR since age 11. Now to two will continue as teammates as both have sign National Letter of Intents to play basketball for the next four years for the Lady Lumberjacks at Stephen F. Austin University in Nagadoches, Texas. Sampson, a senior at Round Rock McNeil High School and Sawyer, a senior at Pflugerville High School inked their letters on November 14th. Both players are very excited and relieved the recruiting process is over. Now the duo can concentrate on leading their respective high to the state basketball playoffs. PTR is proud of the accomplishments of Ms. Sampson and Ms. Sawyer. The PTR family wishes them the best as future Lady Lumberjacks Tuesday, July 31 PTR 17U Girls Capture Prime Time National Championship Title The Push The Rock 17U girls completed its 2007 summer season by capturing the 2007 Prime Time National Championship held in Carrollton, Texas, July 26-29, 2007. Over 580 girls and boys teams from around the country participated in the four-day tournament. The games were played in the greater Dallas Metroplex area. PTR began its championship run by cruising through pool play with wins over the East Texas Lady Tigers, BCSC Lady Hornets, and the Houston Diamonds by a combined score of 191 to 90. PTR advanced to the championship round as the number one seeded team in its pool. PTR opened up championship play with a convincing win over the One-On-One Lady Cardinals, 52-15. PTR got balanced scoring, with Brittany Zamora leading the way with 11 points. Schera Sampson added nine, and Teniqua Gray and Jasmine Fuller chipped in seven a piece. PTR continued its momentum in second round as they faced off against the Houston Heatwave. PTR continued its amazing defense by holding the Heatwave to just eight points in the second half as powered its way to a 51-35 victory. Brittany Zamora led all scorers with 13 points, while Schera Sampson added 12 points. PTR next opponent was a familiar one, D-Nice from Dallas. PTR had faced D-Nice in the Denton Shootout two weeks earlier as PTR defeated D-Nice to advance to the championship game. In a game that was close throughout, PTR took a late lead and never looked back, in route to a 55-48 victory. Teniqua Gray, who will be playing basketball for the University of Louisiana-Monroe in the fall, turned in a clutch performance by scoring 18 points, but it was her defensive pressure that help PTR gain control of the game in the closing minutes of the game. Brittany Zamora and Schera Sampson each added 11 points. With the win, PTR advance to the semi-final round. In the semi-final game, PTR faced the undefeated Texas 300 team. PTR struggled in the first half, but was able to post a five point halftime lead. In the second half, PTR found its groove, shooting 66% from the field to gain a 47-29 victory over Texas 300 to advance to the championship game. PTR got a huge game from Courtney Martin, who led all scorers with 12 points. Teniqua Gray provided additional offense support with 11 points.In the championship game, PTR faced it rival the Fort Bend Stars. The championship game would be the third meeting between the two teams this summer. Fort Bend defeated PTR in their first meeting at the Cy-Fair Tournament earlier in the month, PTR would revenge its lost the following week with a win at the Denton Shootout the following week. In a game that played out like a great height weight fight. PTR throw the first punch by taking an early 12 point lead early in the game, but the Stars countered punched and battled back to cut the lead to four. PTR increased the lead back to 11 points in the second half, but again the Stars countered and cut the lead to two points. PTR went on an 8-0 run late in the game, which proved to be the difference as PTR held on to a 48-42 victory to claim the national championship title. The Prime Time National Championship was the crowning achievement of a wonderful season in which PTR captured four tournament titles and one second place finish in eight tournaments. PTR's combined record for the summer season was 39 victories and four loses. Coach Marty and Coach Wendy would like to thank all of the young ladies who played a role in this magical season. cupid-cupid shuffle.mp3 Thursday, July 19 PTR 14U Girls Capture Third Place at BCI National Championship PTR 14/8th Girls competed in the Basketball Congress International (BCI) National Tournament on July 6th - July 10th in Lewisville, TX. BCI attracts basketball teams from all over the country and international to participate in their national championship tournament. PTR open the tournament on Thursday against Hoop 10 Premier. The first half, PTR and Hoop 10 played to a 32-32 halftime score. In the second half, Hoop 10 opened with a 9-0 run as the Hoop 10 Premier made the three consecutive three pointers. PTR could only get as close as seven points before losing 57 67. Nneka led all scorers with 16 points. Kharyna added 13points in a losing cause. In game two, PTR faced the SCU Hoops. After playing a close first half, PTR trailed by one point. PTR began the second half slow which allowed the SCU Hoops to stretch the lead to eight points. Down the stretch, PTR was unable to convert clutch free throws, as SCU Hoops scored a 56-48 victory. Amber led the way with 12 points, while Nneka chipped in nine points. After losing both games on opening day, player held a players only meeting to assess their play during day one. The coaches asked the players, are you ready to play now? The response was Yes Sir! PTRs opponent on day two was the San Antonio Starz. PTR showed their metal by getting back to the things they do best lock down defense. PTR open with a 12-1 run to take a 27 6 halftime lead. PTR continued to play lock down on defense and cruised to a 4531 victory. With that win PTR was able to secure second place in their pool play. Nneka led PTR with 11 points. Adesuwa added eight points. During the tournaments opening ceremonies, PTR entered two players in the three-point contest. Both Amber and Brittany managed to advance to the second round. Amber made seven three pointers in 30 second, while Brittany dropped in six three pointers. To cap off opening ceremonies, the player cheered and critiqued Coaches Reginald and Felix as they competed in the coachs basketball game. PTR begin day three of the tournament against All Net. PTR jump out to an early 10 point lead as they rolled to an 11 point lead at half. PTR withstood a 7 0 run in the second half, but got to its locked down defense and posted a 49-37 victory. PTR next opponent was the one seeded Team USA. PTR trailed at the half by three. In the second half, Team USA outside game picked up. PTR fought back to cut the lead to four, but could get no closer. Team USA sealed the game by converting free throws down the stretch as Team USA posted a 59-49 victory. The lost meant that PTR could only advance to the championship game by working their way through the loser bracket. On day four, PTR know that they needed to win three games to a make it to the championship. The first team standing in the way was the San Antonio Storm. In a game that went down to the wire, PTR overcame a three point deficit with: 46 second left in the game. The Storms attempted to run the clock out, but Nneka stole a pass. PTR called time to design a play to tie the game. With :31 seconds left, Regina hit a game tying three pointer, the Storm had a chance to seal a victory, but missed the shot with 14 second left. PTR rebound the shot. In its final procession, Brittany took the pass from Nneka and droved the length of the court but was fouled with six seconds on the clock. Brittany calmly converted both free throws to give PTR a two point lead. The Storm had one final attempt to tie the game but could not convert as PTR won an outlasted the Strom 48 44. Nneka leading the way with 13 points, while Amber clipped in nine points. In its next game, PTR faced one of its rivals the Cedar Park Wolves. Both teams were very familiar with each other and this created an interesting back drop. The game was physical and both teams play aggressively. PTR took a one point lead into the half. In the second half, built a seven point lead, but the Wolves would not go away. PTR kept a five point margin. The Wolves made a 3 pointer as time ran out to cut the margin of victory to two. PTR held on to a 44 42 victory. PTR got a monster game from Nneka who poured in 19 points. Brittany added 11 points in the victory. The victory assured PTR no worst than third place. On the final day of the tournament, PTR faced Hoop 10 who had defeated PTR earlier in the tournament. PTR managed to stay close in the first half as they played through foul trouble. The Hoop 10 built an eight point halftime lead. In the second half, PTR made a run but could get no closer than four points. Hoop 10 sealed the game by making their free throws as Hoop 10 defeated PTR 49 -42. PTR got 15 points from Nneka, 11 points from Mariah and 10 points from Kharyna. Nneka and Kharyna were named to the BCI All-American Team. PTR is extremely proud of all the players and coaches. The third place finish is a huge achievement for the girls, coaches, their parents and the organization. The girls are very motivated after their performance at BCI Nationals and are looking to closing the season out on a high note at Primetime Nationals. They are determined to reach their goal. Thursday, July 19 PTR 17U Take Second at Denton Shootout PTR 17U finished second place at the Mid American Youth Basketball (MAYB) Denton Shootout held on July 13th-15th in Denton Texas. The Denton Shootout was the second in three NCAA Sanctioned tournaments PTR will be participating in this summer. PTR opened the tournament with a resounding victory over the Lady Hawks from Beaumont, Texas. PTR jumped started the game on a 14-0 run and never looked back as PTR cruised to a 66-22 victory. PTR had four players in double figures. Schera Sampson led all the way with 13 points, Brittany Zamora added 12 points, while Teniqua Gray and Epiphany Smith both added 10 points each. In the second round, PTR faced the West Texas Shooting Stars. PTR got off to a slow start, but found its groove in the second half as PTR shot 60% from the floor to capture a 59-47 victory. Brittany Zamora paced PTR's balance attack with 14 points. PTR combined for 18 block shots in the victory. In the third round, PTR faced the Fort Bend Shooting Stars for the second time in a week. PTR lost to Fort Bend at the Adidas Cy Fair Tournament a week earlier. In the rematch, PTR played one of its strongest games of the season holding the potent Shooting Stars offense to 25 points. PTR revenged its lost by defeating the Shooting Stars 44-25. PTR got a huge defensive effort from Amina Sawyer and Schera Sampson as they combined for 14 block shot. Schera lead PTR with 12 points and Brittany Zamora pored in 11 points. With the victory, PTR went undefeated in Pool play. In the championship round, PTR met the West Texas Storm. In a close contest, it was PTR's ability to make clutch baskets down the stretch as PTR held on to a 36-30 victory over the Storm. Sampson continued her strong tournament play with 12 points. Amina Sawyer and Brittany Zamora each added seven points. In the semi-final game PTR matched up with D-Nice from Dallas. PTR had some trouble matching the speed of the smaller D-Nice team. To match the D-Nice's speed, PTR established in inside game to take control of the game. In the end PTR size outlasted D-Nice's speed as PTR's 51 points. Sampson lead all scorers with 20 points, Zamora added 14 points. With the victory, PTR advance to the title game. In the championship game, PTR faced the Dallas Lakers Elite. The Lakers Elites' front court consisted of three future Division I college players. In the first half, PTR trailed by as many as eight, but was able to cut the halftime lead to three. PTR got a huge game from LaJoya Brown who came off the bench to score 10 second half points. Brown's play help PTR that a five point lead late in the game, but PTR's inability to convert free throw opportunity down the stretch became its undoing, as PTR fail to the Lakers 43-39. LaJoya Brown led PTR with 10 points. Monday, July 16 PTR Shines at Adidas CY Fair Tournament PTR 17U had a strong showing at the Adidas Cy Fair Tournament held in Cy Fair, Texas July 6-8th, 2007. The Cy Fair tournament was the first of three NCAA Sanction tournaments that PTR will participate in this month. Over 90 high school teams played in the three day tournament. Over 40 college scouts from all around the country were in attendance to seek some of the best lady basketball players in the State of Texas. PTR open pool play with a 46-43 victory over Southern Impact. Brittany Zamora led all scorers with 20 points and Teniqua Gray added 14 points. In the second round, PTR faced the Killeen All Stars. PTR rolled to a 55-24 victory. Schera Sampson poured in 16 points and Zamora chipped in with 10 points. In the final game in pool play, PTR squared off against Dallas Top Prospects. PTR got a strong game from Amina Sawyer and Schera Sampson, who both scored 15 points. PTR went undefeated in pool play, but failed to advance to the championship bracket, losing the tie breaker to Dallas/Fort Worth Elite. In this final game, PTR played the Fort Bend All Stars. In a game that went down to the wire, Fort Bend outlasted PTR 42-41. Schera Sampson led all scorers with 12 points and Brittany Zamora added 11 points. Sunday, June 24 PTR 17U Take 5th at Tyrone Johnson Tournament PTR 17U took 5th place in the Tyrone Johnson Tournament hosted by the Austin Elite on June 16-17th in Austin, Texas. PTR open bracket play against Team Ichiban. PTR started slow, but picked up the pace in the second half to roll to a 47-27 victory. PTR was led by Schera Sampson, who led all scorers with 13 points. Shaniqua Adams added 12 and Brittany Zamora poured in 10 points. In the second round, PTR faced TeamXpress. In a game that went back and forth in the first half, TeamXpress build a five point lead at the half. In the second half, TeamXpress build an 11 point led. PTR cut the lead to three with under a minute left in the game, but were unable to overcome the margin as TeamXpress handed PTR only its second lost of the season 50-41. PTR was paced by Epiphany Smith's 13 points. Amina Sawyer added 10. The lost put PTR out of championship contention. In game three, PTR faced the team that gave them their first lost of the season, the Texas Ambassadors. In a game that went to the wire, PTR outlasted the Ambassadors 48-47. Epiphany Smith and Amina Sawyer led all scoring with 12 points. Brittany Re and Courtney Martin each chipped in seven in the victory. In its final game, PTR faced Copperas Cove. In a game in which PTR trailed by as many as eight, PTR buckled down defensively to secure a 48-45 victory. Smith poured in 13 points, while Amina Sawyer added 10. Sunday, June 24 PTR Girls Participate in University of Texas Basketball Camp Several players from the Push The Rock 10U team participated in the University of Texas Camp held on June 20th and 21st in Austin. The campers included Courtney Bishop, Elena Gavia, Caylee Marshall and Samantha Self. Caylee Marshall was named "Texas Basketball Camp Best Defensive Player 2007." Congratulation to Caylee from the PTR family on her accomplishment! Thursday, June 7 PTR 17U Capture Title in Waco Prime Time Qualifier The PTR 17U ladies capture its fourth championship title in four tournaments this season at the Prime Time Qualifier held in Waco, TX on June 1-3, 2007. PTR opened tournament play against the Waco Hot Outlaws. PTR got strong play from Brittany Zamora, Epiphany Smith and Amina Sawyer, who scored 10 points each, as PTR posted a 57-40 victory over the Hot Outlaws. In its second game, PTR faced the Waco Lady J's. PTR got a strong game from Schera Sampson, who led all scorers with 11 points. Amina Sawyer added nine points and nine rebounds. Amanda Van Dyke and newcomer Shaniqua Adams each added eight points, as PTR rolled to a 60-29 victory. PTR continued its strong defensive play in its third game against the Marlin Ballers. PTR jump out to a 15-point lead and never looked back. PTR got balanced scoring from Sawyer to had nine points, Adams and Grace Slaughter added seven, as PTR cruised to a 46-18 win over the Ballers. In the semifinal game, PTR played the Central Texas Cyclones. In a game that was back and forth in the first half, PTR found its down by five points at half time. In the second half, the Cyclones build a 14 point lead with just over six minutes left in the game. PTR went on an 18 to 4 run, to trail by three with 15 second left in the game. A three-pointer by Brittany Zamora and a short jump shot by Schera Sampson help push the game to overtime. In the overtime, PTR scored the first four points and held on to a 61-58 overtime victory. Schera Sampson posted a double double, scoring 22 points and pulling down 12 rebound. Sawyer added 11 and Zamora clipped in with nine. The victory help PTR advance to the championship game. In the championship game, PTR faced the Waco Lady Sparks. PTR took advantage of it size advantage in post to take control of the game early. Amina Sawyer poured in 18 points and Schera Sampson added 12, as PTR capture the title 61-48. |
