  Swim 2004

First Meets
The swim meet season starts on Wednesday, Sept. 1 with the Frosh/Soph team swimming against Hersey and BG at 4:30 pm. The meet will be at Wheeling HS.

The Varsity and JV teams initiate competition on Thursday Sept. 2 at Fremd. Don't forget the water polo victory at that pool that gave us the MSL Championship.

Season Starts with Optimism
The Knights splashed into the 2004 season with a 100-76 victory over Maine South (non-conference) in their first meet. It was great to see last years stars return with good swims from Katelyn, Liz, Allie and Amy A. There were rising stars seen in Sara and Amy W. And what an awesome looking medley relay. JV was also impressive in their first outing. We're looking forward to an amazing season.

After Two Weeks
With two weeks of the season down, the Knights are looking impressive. Though Varsity lost to the always fast Fremd Vikings, there were victories over Maine South and Hoffman Estates and a second place finish at the Viators Invite. The JV team has looked very strong. Though the frosh/soph have two second place finishes, they were very close to winning both of those meets. We're looking for big things from all of the swimmers.

The third week starts with a tough meet at the new Elk Grove pool against last years Division Champion Mustangs of Rolling Meadows. On Saturday the Knights travel to Stevenson for the all-relay meet.

Mustangs Drown Knights
The Rolling Meadows Mustangs were able to take a victory away from the Knights on Sept. 14. Though both teams won six events, the Mustangs depth gave them 8 second and 8 third place finishes. Leading the Knights were Amy, winning breast and IM; Sara in the fly; Alli taking the 100 and Liz winning the 50. These same four girls combined to win the 200 free relay.

We're all looking forward to fun at the Stevenson Relays on Saturday and a visit to the new pool at Elk Grove on Tuesday.

The Knights took first place in the Green division at the Stevenson Relay Invite on Saturday. Viators placed second and other teams in the division included Wheeling, Rolling Meadows, Cary-Grove, Jacobs, Dundee-Crown, and Plainfield. It is always a fun day with all races being relays. The Prospect depth from freshman, sophmore, JV and Varsity showed through.

First place finishes included Freshman 200 Medley and 400 free with Hillary, KC, Megan and Amy F.; 350 Fly with Marissa, Katelyn and Sarah; and the 350 Breast with Hillary, Liz K. and Amy A. A meet RECORD was set in the 500 Crescendo (50-100-150-200) with Katelyn, Amy W., Allie and Liz D.

Sectionals at Glenbrook North
The Prospect girls swim team will travel to Northbrook for their Sectional swim meet at Glenbrook North H.S. on Saturday November 13. The competion will be tough with Glenbrooks North and South, Maines East, West and South, BG, Hersey, Deerfield, St. Viators, Wheeling, and Highland Park. It is a great pool, made for fast times.

Knights Take Second at Viators
An awesome showing ended with the Prospect Knights in second place at the Viators Invite on Saturday Sept. 11. Relays were impressive with first in the 200 free, second in the medley and third in the 400 free. Amy set a pool record in the breaststroke. Liz won the 50 free and there were many other great finishes that added to the point total.

Viator's Invite from MP Times Sept 16, 2004
Knights place 2nd at St. Viator
BY KEN KEENAN
ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR

A solid core of returning Prospect girls swimmers, paced by sophomore Amy Andracki -- the team's only state qualifier last season -- is already making some noise in this season's early going.

Competing in Saturday's 10-team St. Viator Invite, the Knights placed second with 325 points, finishing only behind Mother McAuley, which won the meet with 350.

"It was our highest finish ever (in the annual event)," said Prospect head coach Dick Mortensen. "And it's the first time we've beaten Viator (3rd place with 298) in an invite since I've been coaching."

Andracki, who placed 23rd in State last year in the 100-yard breaststroke, led the Knights' charge Saturday, winning the 100 breast in a pool-record 1 minute, 8.58 seconds and placing second in the 200 individual medley (2:21.88). She also helped Prospect's 200 freestyle relay (with Alli Luft, Sarah Sohn and Liz Dix) win (1:45.02), while helping the 200 medley relay (with Katelyn Fairburn, Sohn and Dix) place second (1:57.38).

"With Amy, we're looking at last year as a fun experience at State," Mortensen said. "This year, the bar is raised a little higher, and she accepts that challenge. So in addition to making State in the 100 breast this year, her goal is also to make it in the 200 IM. She tweaked a bicep at the beginning of the season, but now she's back to normal. Mentally, she's very strong, too."

Beside her shared victory in the 200 medley relay at St. Viator, Luft -- a Knights' co-captain in her fourth varsity season -- placed second in the 100 free (56.53 seconds) and third in the 50 free (26.18). She also helped the 400 free relay (with Amy Warner, Fairburn and Dix) finish third (4:03.24).

"Alli's the returning (MSL) conference champ in the 50 free, and she just missed qualifying for State in both the 50 and 100 free," Mortensen said. "She can swim in any freestyle event and come through with a quality swim. And she has the leadership skills we need. She's very team-oriented and very outgoing. And she's very goal-driven. My expectations for her are to qualify for State in both the 100 and 50 free, and to be part of the 200 medley when it breaks the school record."

Fairburn also returns as a fourth-year senior and is a co-captain as well. Aside from her relay work, she placed fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:07.63) at St. Viator.

"Katelyn's a quiet worker," Mortensen said. "You don't have to say a lot to her -- she just plugs along and does her work. She really wants to be the strong link on the 200 medley relay this year, and she's meeting it head-on, showing maturity. She definitely has the respect of the others, and you should get that respect if you swim four years on varsity."

Dix, a third-year varsity junior, won the 50 free (26.04) Saturday and placed fourth in the 100 free (57.35).

"She swam all summer," Mortensen said. "She worked hard, and her hard work is starting to pay off. She wants to be a state qualifier (in the 50 free and 100 free), and she's taking responsibility. With her and Alli, we have two freestylers who will give us 1-2, 1-3 or 2-3 finishes."

Sophomore Warner is back after a season on varsity as a freshman and is swimming in the 200 free and 500 free, in addition to relays.

"She was in sprint events last year, but I think she's better suited to be a distance swimmer," Mortensen said. "And she's accepted that role, learning how to manage the clock and how to pace herself."

Liz Carrs is another second-year varsity sophomore, with her focus the 100 breaststroke and 50 breaststroke.

"With 62 girls in the program, Liz can specialize on breaststroke," Mortensen said. "She knows her role, and she's working real hard."

Third-year seniors Gina Barasa (100 fly, 100 backstroke) and Marisa Burvikovs (100 fly, 200 IM, relays) round out the list of returnees.

"Gina's a definite team player who knows her role," Mortensen said. "And Marisa gives us another experienced veteran."

Among the newcomers, freshman Sohn is making the biggest splash so far. In addition to her aforementioned relay work at St. Viator, Sohn also placed second in the 200 free (2:05.01) and fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:06.15).

"She got right in the pool on the first day of practice and fit right in," Mortensen said. "She swam for D.U.S.T. (District Unified Swim Team) in the summer and really stood out. She has no freshman jitters. She amazes me with her maturity level."

Other newcomers include freshmen K.C. Dix (Liz's sister), Hillary Oplan and Megan Lyons.

"We have a very competitive atmosphere, but very healthy, very enjoyable," Mortensen said. "They all get along, and that makes it easier when you don't have a good day because your friends are there for support. If everyone swims to their potential, this could be a very exciting season."

Successful Week
The Knights Girls Swim team had a fun meet at the new Elk Grove pool on Thursday. Many girls experimented with different events. What a great facility.

On Staurday, the girls continued their success with a 4th place finish at the Buffalo Grove Invite. This was their highest finish at this meet. Hersey won by 4 points over Cary-Grove and Warrenville finished third, 25 points ahead of PHS. It was fun to see Dr. Rogers cheering the girls from the pool deck.

So far this season, the girls are 3-2 in dual meets and have a First (at Stevenson), Second (at St. Viators) and Fourth (at BG) in Invitationals.

Knights fall to Huskies
The Knights fell to the Hersey Huskies on Thursday 103 to 80. Maybe there was too much homecoming activities? The Huskies divers were impressive. JV was able to defeat those dogs 99-79.

Knights Pirouette to Third at Jamboree
The Knights went for the cycle at Invitationals this year. 1st at Stevenson, 2nd at Viators, 3rd at Hersey's Jamboree and 4th at Buffalo Grove.

Starting with a beautiful ballet during the pre-meet skits, the Knights continued with simply awesome swims. Medley and 200 free relays both took second place, and in the 400 relay they took 5th. Liz and Alli took 2nd and 3rd in the 50 and then 3rd and 4th in the 100 free. Sarah got 4th in the 200 free and then finished very strong in the 500, missing 2nd by only 0.05 seconds. Amy A., besides her almost usual first and meet record in breastroke, took 3rd in the IM. Katelyn got 5th in back. KC was our only flier, but she was able to stop the meet while she changed swim caps (she had a logo on the first one). But when she got into the water she really took off. Too bad it was a 100 yard race and not a 75.

The scores are listed in the "Schedules".

Oct 9: Status report
After taking 3rd at the Hersey Jamboree, the Prospect Girls Swimming Team is having their most successful year ever at invitationals. In dual meets they are 4-3 with BG coming in this week and a trip to Maine West next week. There are two weeks until JV Conference and three left until Varsity Conference. With some hard work over these next weeks, there could be several girls, and hopefully a relay or two, headed for the State meet. Keep your eyes set on your goals.

Knights Defeat Bisons
To honor the outgoing Seniors, the Prospect Knights defeated the Buffalo Grove girls swim team for the first time in over 5 years. It was a team effort with many girls winning their events.

The Stars of Tomorrow
Frosh/Soph Conference Invitational Swim meet was Saturday, October 16, at Wheeling pool. The Knights finished 5th of the 10 teams, behind Barrington, Fremd, Hersey, and Palatine. Though it was crowded on the deck and in the stands everyone was having fun. Some of the shining performances included Lamia, Casey, Andrianna, and Emilee finishing 8th in the 200 medley relay, Katie was 5th in the 200 free and 7th in the 500. In the 200 free relay, Casey, Emilee, Andrianna, and Katie finished 6th and Emily, Megan, Paige and Kelsey finished 10th. Ruth brought home a 10th in Backstroke and Emily and Casey combined from a 9th and 10th in Breastroke. In the last event, Katie, Megan, Lamia and Emilee pulled a 5th place finish in the 400 free relay. Way to go girls. We're expecting to see more in the coming years.

Warriors squeak by the Knights in last '04 dual meet
In the last, dual meet of the season, the Prospect Knights lost to the Maine West Warriors 94-88. This gives the Knights a season record of 5-4. Even with a 1-2-3 finish from Amy, Lauren and Hilary, in the Breastroke, the four points needed to win eluded the girls. Now it is on to conference; JV this week and Varsity next week.

JV Takes 5th at Conference
The Girls JV team did an outstanding job at the MSL Conference meet on Saturday, Oct 23 in Barrington. They were rewarded with a 5th place finish, highest of the MSL East teams. The top 4 teams were without surprises; Barrington (477 pts.), Fremd (346), Palatine (135) and Schaumburg.

Knights take 5th at Exciting Conference Meet
Wow...There were a bunch of great swims at Saturday's Conference meet at Barrington. The Medley relay (Katelyn, Amy, Liz, Alli) started with a second place finish and a time just one second off of State. Amy then took 5th in the IM. Alli made the podium with a 5th in the 50 free and 3rd in the 100. Sarah just missed with a 7th in the fly but worked for a 5th in the 500. The 200 free relay with Alli, Amy, Sarah and Liz brought home another second place. In the Breaststroke, the MSL record was broken by Amy, but she finished second. KC was possessed as she drop 9 seconds in her 200 free time and 3 seconds off her backstroke time. A nice days work by everyone.

A Lot of Excitement at Sectionals
The Prospect girls had an emotion filled Saturday at Glenbrook North's Sectional Meet. Of the 19 swims, 17 bettered their seed times. Amy, the breastroke Sectional Champion also set a pool record. Two relays, the 200 Medley and the 200 Free set new Prospect Team records, so there will be three new names on the reocrd board, Katelyn, Liz and Sarah. It was a little disappointing to see three swims, Medley, 50 free and 100 free, come to less than a second off the time required to make the trip to the State meet next week in Evanston.

The team finished 7th overall. Points were gained by Katelyn, Amy A., Liz and Alli as they finished 4th in the Medley. In the IM, Amy took 4th and Katelyn, 9th followed by Alli in 4th and liz in 11th for the 50 free. Sarah took 8th in the fly and swam an impressive 2nd place finish in the 500. Alli got 6th and Liz 12th in the 100 free. In the 200 relay, Alli, Sarah, Amy and Liz went to the blocks to get their 5th place awards. Katelyn and KC combined for 9th and 10th in backstroke. Amy won breastroke, followed by a 9th place finish by Amy W., KC, Katelyn and Sarah in the 400 relay. It was a great day. On to State for Amy.

The STATE meet - Sooo close
On Friday, Prospect's state swimmer, Amy A. just missed the opportunity to swim on Saturday by finishing 13th in the breastroke preliminaries. The first 12 return to swom on Saturday.

Other areas swimmers in the finals included Maine West's Tina Vande Vusse finishing 5th in the butterfly. Jenny Toler of Elk Grove took 9th in the 100 free. In diving, Hersey's Kate Prorok finished 7th. The first place team at State was Naperville Central. They had two state champions and two champion relays.

And now it is on to Water Polo.
